- How to sharpen woodturning tools for beginners. In tonight's video I'll show you how I sharpen all of my woodturning tools using the jig i made in my previous videos. I'll be covering how to sharpen a roughing gouges, skew chisel, scrapers, spindle gouges, parting tools and bowl gouges. The hardest part in my opinion when learning from people who have mastered or are close to it on the lathe is they are using high end lathes. And I found starting with a sub 1000 dollar midi lathe that the power in real nice full size lathes makes everything go smoother
I could be wrong for sure but I figured out how to create the outside form I want pretty well. But hollowing is where I'm having issues and I think more power would solve at least some of it

Nice video, my mate brought some chisels down for me to sharpen and not knowing anything about wood turning I had no idea how they needed to be finished, so thanks, that was a great help.

Hi Tom, You have a great "teaching" method that allows the information to be easily understood. As I've said before I use the Tormek system for all my tools on a whetstone. I am trying to justify buying a CBN wheel. One day I might take the plunge. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw that's very kind of you 😁 a friend of mine uses the Tormek system with whetstones too, I think it's a very good system, he gets the same sharp results as using a CBN wheel. He's colour coded all of his tools to help him remember which angle to set on the jig 😀

Thank you for this! I dont have a jig, nor a way to easily fashion one, but using the tool rest I was able to duplicate your method with a fair amount of accuracy. (My grinder IS my lathe, I mount the wheel on the headstock. Eventually I can invest in a grinder and make the needed jigs, but for now I make due)

Thanks Steven, I picked the wing sharpening tip up from a spindle production turner in England, he said grinding it that way saves him seconds per piece but at the end of a production run all those seconds add up, so it saves him time and money. Luckily I have never had to worry about saving seconds with my work and focus more on having fun :-) thanks for watching.
@@thewelshwoodman649 Yeah I wasnt thinking about saving time more of if you have just roughed out a spindle it would be nice just to put a quick fine cut over it to get some idea what its going to look like finished

Video was good , not long at all and for once no crappy music which is what i want to see from a guy who is explaining something technical. Its something i appreciate a lot as I am partly deaf and find it difficult to concentrate when there is someone narrating over music. I'm based in spain and have just got myself a nice 1hp Lombarte lathe, same as a decent Axminster with all the bells and whistles, I upgraded from a smaller model which was a bit underpowered really for its size. This one is just over 1.2 HP. Youll do very well on you tube I think.. Thank you.

Thank you for this information. I recently purchased a new slow speed grinder and 2 cbn wheels for it but I have yet to put them on as the grinder came with aluminum oxide wheels. I also have a wolverine jig and seem to have trouble with consistency using it. Practice and practice again i suppose. After watching this video, I think I see what I've been doing wrong. Thank you for some excellent information and great presentation. I am also about to sharpen my expensive bowl gouge for the first time. I did bite the bullet and buy a CBN wheel for my 6 inch grinder, so I’m hoping it will make the task a little easier. Please consider making a sharpening jig that does not require welding. I’m sure there are a lot of us without that gear.... or the talent to use it.

You may have already covered this as I have lots more videos of yours to watch but how sharp are your chisels after going on the grinder I'm used to sharpening knives plane irons and wood chisels on my japenese water stones and then I strop them resulting in shaving sharp edges I literally test them shaving my arm hairs !!
Do lathe chisels need to be this sharp or are they fine straight off the grinding wheel?
Is this level or sharpening ever required for lathe chisels?

Thanks Chirs I'm glad the videos are helping. That's a brilliant question. I tend to use my gouges straight off the grinder, it helps if you have a really smooth grinding stone to remove the smallest amount of material focusing on the cutting edge and the angle. I use to strop my scew chisel the same as you would with a knife, since I got a CBN wheel I've found it gives me really similar results as stropping so tend to sharpen all my turning tools on the CBN wheel now and go straight back to turning. The steel your turning tools are made from, their heat treat and what material you are turning will determine how sharp your tools will stay, so most people find it quicker to use a grinding wheel to quickly sharpen then get back to turning. If your having to really push the tool to get it to cut its normally a sign its time to sharpen. I hope this helps :-) thanks for watching .

Thanks for your comment I really appreciate it 😁 commercial sharpening jigs/ brands I have used and I would recommend, would be the wolverine system by one-way, the woodcut sharpening system, Tormek and sorby pro edge. There are lots of off brand versions of these systems also available. If you are in the UK Simon Hope -Hope tools has some brilliant grinders and sharpening jigs available. I think this topic would be a great video to explore in the future, going through the pros and cons of each system 👍 thanks for the idea 💡
Great info, what is the best steal for wood turning tools
Thanks for your question Matthew. My choice would be High Speed Steel (HSS), its got a good carbon content and keeps its edge well, the Steel is designed for cutting materials at high speeds which is ideal for both metal and wood turning. This is an amazing video cant remember if you mentioned it at the start but was the table on the wheel on the left as u watch it (not the white one) am guessing that is just set to the height it needs to be your not changing the angle of the table. If that all makes sense? Am getting bench grinder on Monday (second hand) but its got a table rest. 🏴👍

Thanks Grant, the CBN wheel is a fine grit between 240-180 grit and the white wheel is around 80 grit - I tend to only use the white wheel for reshaping tools now days. I hope this helps 😁

Thanks William, I use a fine wheel for my CBN, I bought it from the Tool Post almost a year now and its been absolutely brilliant. I would never go back to aluminium oxide wheels again. Highly recommend them it makes a big difference in making your tools last longer and getting a razor edge. Thanks for watching

Thanks for your comment Santiago and for the great questions. The grinder is a regular speed 6inch grinder, slow grinders I've been told by friends can be more effective at sharpening. When the tools are manufactured they are normally go through a heat treatment process where they are hardened (quenched- which can leave them brittle) so they have to be normalised heated up to a specific temerature in an oven for a certain period of time (normally the cutting edge will turn a straw yellow colour) when you over heat the tool you when sharpening you will see blue/purple spots along the cutting edge of the tool. Hello! Thank you for your videos, you have been my tutor since I bought a lathe at the beginning of lockdown. I want to buy a CBN wheel but cannot find the right size. Any advice on where I might purchase the right one would be more than apreciated. My old grinder takes a 6" wheel with a 1/2" bore. Kind Regards. Wendy
Thanks for your comment Wendy I really appreciate it. I bought my CBN wheel from the Tool post which has sadly closed down. I think Axminster tools and machinery sell them. When I bought my wheel I also bought a machined adaptor insert to help fit my grinder spindle shaft, essentially it's a piece of turned steel that has a tight interference fit to the wheel and a hole drilled through it to fit the spindle size. This might be an option if your struggling to find a wheel that fits exactly 😁 I hope this helps all the best Tom

I got the CBN from a company called tool post in the UK who have sadly closed down. The CBN wheel I've got is a 150mm (6inch) in diameter and 50mm wide (2 inch) its a fine grit wheel. You can find lots of different sizes and grits online to suit your own grinder. One thing to look out for I'd the bore size of your grinders spindle, to make sure the hole in the CBN wheel matches the spindle of your grinder. I hope this helps 😁

Thanks for subscribing Vince, I think it depends on the design of the cutter some have been designed to be deposed of when worn out and others you can touch up with a diamond hone and lapping fluid, I've only had experience in using Simon hopes carbide tips in making hollow forms so haven't used mine a great deal, I tend to rotate the cutter when it gets dull or change them out. Hi Tom, I'm contemplating going for a "WET and DRY" system. Any thoughts?
One of my good turning friends uses a wet and dry Tormek system with all the jigs and he absolutely loves using it, he let me have a play with it and it was super easy to use and produced the same results as a grinder. If you are in a woodturning club, I would ask around and see if you can try a few sharpening systems to see which one works best for you 😁 I hope this helps 😊
What is the grit of the cbn wheel?
Great video Boss 👍 I don't suppose you are anywhere near Carmarthen or Swansea? I'm between both. I really struggle sharpening, always seem to get high wings on my bowl gouge. Tip looks good but the wings end up high and crescent shape making it very 'catchy'.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks for your comment Bob. Unfortunately I'm not near Carmarthen, but you will probably find a woodturning club in your area. By the sounds of what you are describing either the angle you have set your table or jig might be slightly off or you are not quite rolling/rotating the tool in a sweeping action enough to grind away areas of the wings of the gouge. What model grinder is that? Had a loot at machine mart but there seems to be a few different Clarke 6" grinders. Not sure what to look for.
Hi Andy I picked the grinder up from gumtree second hand for £15 it's a Clark CBG6RZ 6 inch bench grinder, it came with a course and fine wheel. I've replaced the course wheel with a CBN wheel from the tool post, I hope this helps 😁

I'm used to working with steel as a fabricator so welding,grinders and burning is my fortė. I've got the gear for this but not a real idea.

Hi Carol, I would suggest fitting a smooth white wheel that will fit the bore hole, as this will remove less material than the gray wheels, prevent overheating the tool when sharpening and give you smoother finish for your bevels. I hope this helps 😁

The knife parting tool is around a 45 degree angel with a releaf angel ground at the top the releaf angle can be anywhere between 45-80 degrees, I would experiment and see what angle works best for you 😀

Hi Carl, if you look up CBN wheels online you should be able to find a retailer wherever you are in the world 😁 sadly the toolpost in Didcot, where I bought the wheel from has now closed down. If you are in the UK I believe Axminster sell them. I hope this helps 👍

The grinder is an ancient 6 inch Clark that i picked up second hand in Cardiff off Gumtree, the sharpening jig i made myself there is a video on my channel of the making process which might help. @@hayleywood93 Thats a brilliant question Hayley 😁 which isn't the easiest to answer as there are a lot of different variables, depending on the type of wood you are turning, how seasoned the wood is, what tool steel your gouges are made from etc, which will all depend on how often you will have to sharpen your tools. You will gage with time and experience when the tools start to get dull as they won't cut as efficiently as when they are sharp, if your finding you are pushing harder to make the tool cut that is normally a good sign you need to sharpen. Shit, or bollocks for my English friends. I was hoping that I could use a diamond stone or a whetstone to sharpen these like I sharpen my razor sharp chisels and kitchen knives as a grinder costs two months worth of mortgage. The cheapest, good, grinder in America is a Baldor, which is $2,000+.
Update! I found that if I put my belt sander in a bench vise this works perfectly! All I needed was a magnetic angle finder that I mounted on my gouges to ensure I was at the proper angle. Awesome.

Thanks for your question it's a great one, I think carbide tools have their place for certain tasks and situations. I only tend to use them when I'm creating the inside of hollow forms. I love using traditional tools and the challenge of developing the skills to use them proficiently, it's certainly a big learning curve and it's far easier to learn to use traditional tools with a tutor or some professional lessons but once mastered they can be far quicker to use than carbide tools and give you a nicer finish. But ultimately use whatever you feel more confident with and you feel is safest to use. if the piece is sanded and finished well the end user would find it hard to tell what tool has been used to turn it. I think this would be a good video topic in the future 😁 I hope you have lots of fun turning 👍

What grit CBN wheel are you using?
It's a fine grit around 180 to 240. I hope this helps 👍
