  • I normally upload a new video on Fridays but in a recent RUclips video I mention using a digital angle finder for setting the platform on my 8 inch grinder.
    I used it to set the angle for my negative rake scraper. I A fellow wood turner and friend mentioned a video might be nice.
    Thank you Kyler for the idea. Kyler@ Woodturner Ky

    This is one of your videos that goes back in time that I missed until now. By looking at your grinding station, it almost looks exactly like mine. Even the cabinet I have my grinder mounted on looks like yours. I have the same set up with the same brand of grinder and the Wolverine sharpening system with the Raptor angle jigs. Since I have not been able to turn wood for a while, I did sharpen my tools the other day and planned on turning my round nose scraper into a negative rake one. But, I didn't know what angle to use until now. I was going to look for that angle, but you saved me the trouble. 78 degrees (39 degrees each side). Thanks!

      Thanks John. No real magic but it does need to be less than 90. I like the sharper 78 degrees. Works good.
      I built that cabinet just for the grinder. Made a place for sheets of sandpaper inside.

      George for sure I just hate trying to get metal shavings off a magnet. I have a magnetic base that I use and it is always getting shavings on it. But at least there is a button that takes the magnetic pull away, A zip bag works great to put those magnets in not only for getting the grinding shavings but for picking up small spilled things like tiny screws or nails.
      Not that I have spilled any. Well at least in the last hour.

    Now these are some great tips Gary! Honestly this is by far the best way to set the grinding platform that I have ever seen. Very quick, easy, and repeatable. I was honestly debating in my head if I should order a new tool rest for each of my main tools (40/40 and bottom feeder bowl gouge, skew, scrapers, spindle/roughing gouge) so that I could quickly change them out and not worry about angles. I know, it sounds half ridiculous lol Now all I have to do is get an angle finder and set different angles for each tool, and different score lines on the bar that locks into the tool rest base. This is going to save me some money, shop space (where would I put all the tool rests lol) and I will also have an angle finder that I'm sure will come in handy for other tools and machines in the future. What a time saver!
    Also I'm going to use your magnet tip, I hate to think how much of these filings I breathe in just having it fly off the wheel around the room. I'll probably set at least a couple up to catch all I can.
    And it looks like I'm going to reshape a scraper to a negative rake as well lol it will especially come in handy when trying to clean up the inside bottom of a bowl. It's always to most problematic for me.
    Thanks for the tips and shoutout Gary, much appreciated! I'm going to send people over to check out these very helpful tips and your channel (either in my next video or if I can figure out how to do one of those public posts things). Thanks again!

      Kyler thank you so much. I am happy you like the ideas.
      I bought the digital angler finder for my table saw. You can also use it on the bandsaw. Zero it out on the blade then use it to adjust the table. That works great for non common angles. I have aluminum plates with common angles I made at work.
      I saw how you shared that clip. Pretty cool. Kind of nice getting more Subs. Phil did a shout out and mine doubled overnite.
      Thanks buddy

      I wonder if what you shared went out to everyone. With all the viewers you have I figured I would be busy all day replying LOL No one mentioned you sending them over. Guess I am getting greedy but it is nice knowing someone is looking at your work.
      I was going to mention that if you have the tool rest pulled out far enough then just one line would work for all angles. But I like it as close to the wheel as I can get so I think the 2 lines I have will work for everything I have.
      By the way what grit is your CBN wheel I want to order one. I would get 2 but I doubt if my Rikon 1/2 horse will be able to spin them up.
      Thanks again,
      Gary

      @woodturnerky8556 5 лет назад +1

      ThePapa1947 Honestly Gary I checked back a couple times yesterday to see if that post did much and I was surprised it didn't really make a difference as well. I don't know if those posts catch people's attention the same, or if like you said that it doesn't go out to everybody. I would have thought that a very useful tip video would have caught fellow turners attention. It's really hard to figure out what drives subscriptions and views. My chip and dip platter and Viking bowl are responsible for nearly half of my subscriber count, and I don't know exactly why lol It would be interesting to see if you, Phil or Billy Burt (or anyone else for that matter) made those projects if they would drive similar results. Plus they were fun projects and i would like to see others turn them.
      My CBN wheel is 180 grit and is meant for sharpening. 80 grit would be for reshaping. That may seem like a fine grit but the CBN wheels cut much quicker. I've seen others use two wheels on the 1/2 hp slow speed Rikon grinders. I'm sure it's quite the load for the Grinder to get turning but I haven't heard of any problems arising from it. I always use to spin my Grinder wheels by hand to help it get going, but somewhere along the way I stopped worrying about it and let it do it on its own. I would think as long as it doesn't get hot it should be ok. But I am no expert on electric motors, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt Lol
      Thanks for all the information Gary. Hopefully more people see this tip video. I would like to understand how to properly promote content like this. Very puzzling!

      Having a grinding jig is great but even then having a way to have it repeat is even better. I tinkered with the idea of the digital angle finder then decided I need to come up with more than just the angle finder to make it work. Hopefully this will work out for all.

    Thank your for you video, great video, great detail, very good subject, and a really good repeatable proces. Thank you thank you. Subscribed, I am new to turning but not to woodworking. PLEASE QUICK QUESTION, in other sharpening of tools we use several grades of abrasives, right down to leather strop, why not a similar process for turning chisels and gouges? Please keep sharing your wisdom, to us less informed. Colin

      Thank you for your comments and thanks so much for subscribing.
      I have switched to CBN wheels and the fine one is 350 grit. That leaves a very fine edge. I do have a diamond file that I will use as it gets dull but the slight burr left from the grinder really helps the cutting. You can also use a piece of hard round steel to do the same.
      I worked as a wood pattern maker and when i sharpened my flat chisels on the grinder and then I would use a fine stone and then a leather strop. As a matter of fact I would use the flat stone many times before going to the grinder again. Others would go straight to the grinder and that is it. That is one reason my 50 year old chisels still have plenty of blade left. And they were very old when I bought them from a retired pattern maker.
      Hope this help and thanks again,
      Gary

    Brilliant idea for determining the angle of grinder platform to achieve the bevel desired. I'm 81 and returned to turning after many ,,,,36 years in fact and loving it but would appreciate help. 30 deg on platform gives 45 bevel but can you or anyone help this old boy with a formula to work out platform deg for other gouge angles? • @ThePapa1947

      All you need to do is set the tool on the rest assuming you already have the angle on it then check it with the digital gage.
      If not grid the tool till you have the angle you want then check it.
      Hope that helps and welcome back to turning.

    Hahaha... I'm laughing to myself, Gary. Not at you, but at the fact that we seem to be on the same wavelength, at least this week. My video for this week (I uploaded a couple days ago, no, I'm not copying you) has at least similar info with the exact same angle finder! Old minds think alike, I guess. LOL!
    Anyway, I just wanted to say, I appreciate all the great info you presented in this video. I have thought about scribing that line but figured I could not match it exactly each time. Seems like it would be off just a touch and I would have to grind more than I do now. Maybe not. I might try a piece of tape just to see how close I can come before I decide to scribe.
    Man, I have been busy (not with turning) and I'm so far behind on watching my favorite channels and with turning, it makes me uncomfortable. I've been trying for months to get a few videos ahead, but each time something else happens.
    Great video, Gary! I wish I had seen it sooner!
    Phil

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  5 лет назад +1

      That is funny Phil and I agree great OLD minds do think alike. I know I have been working on something and when your video shows up I say....Dang he beat me to it.
      One thing I am still thinking of doing is have a little piece of wood or aluminum that fits against the slide and then you can push it right up to that. I started with tape and sure enough it got hung up where the bars goes in because I pushed it to far. I did some experimenting and found that you need to miss that line by 1/16 of an inch to really see any difference. But I know I strive for perfect and I am sure you do also.
      Another thing I have been doing is setting the band saw angle with it. Zero the angle finder while stuck on the blade then the table can be adjusted using it. Those little pointers that come on the band saw are worthless.
      I feel kind of good I have 3 videos ready to load and 2 that are almost done with the edit work. I just run the camera and what I say that doesn't make sense (which is most) I edit out and put music in. Usually involves stumbling over my words. HAHA
      I hope you can get caught up on your watching. My last video was a segmented bowl with staves using really nice wood.I think I was able to explain the process pretty good.
      Looking forward to seeing your new video.

    Sorry to be coming in so late but I just found this searching for how to set my grinder table. Several very good tips; I especially like the magnets. I do have one question: how do you account for grinder wheel wear? Shouldn't the line on the shaft of the Oneway need to move as the wheel changes diameter?

      Thanks for watching and commenting John, Shortly after this video I ordered CBN wheels. I have a video on that I think.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 года назад +1

      Well it would mean the platform would need to be moved closer rather than changing the angle.
      . I suppose it would be possible to have something to fit between the wheel and the front of the platform to set the distance. Of course when the wheel is stopped.
      I have gone to CBN wheels and with those nothing changes

    Thanks for the video! I have long wrestled with trying to understand why when set up for a 40/40 grind the digital angle does not read 40? Can you explain that?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 года назад +1

      The angle is created from the relationship of the platform to a round stone. So the height and distance from the stone needs to remain the same to use a digital angle finder.
      Other wise the tip is hitting at a different spot.
      If you draw a circle you can see how the angle would change.
      Now if you were to grind you tips on a flat belt then you can use angle you are wanting to grind.
      Hope this helps if not let me know and I can sketch it out.

    • @ThePapa1947

      The platform is not setup on the center line of the wheel. So it takes a differenet tilt to grind the tool at the angle you want.

  • @hartleytaylor1144
    @hartleytaylor1144 4 месяца назад

    I am confused, if you want a 30° angle, why would you not set the table at 30° would that not be a 30° angle do I want 30° or 40°? I’m confused I want to work with one number what is the proper angle if you have a set of tools that are messed up?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 месяца назад

      Your platform is not angled off the center of the grinding wheel. So you tool is not pointing to the center.
      It is all about geometry. I would suggest making some templates of the angle you want to grind and adjust the platform to that. Then measure with your digital angle finder and record it so you can use those settings.

    The only problem you have with scribing a line on the bar is that as the wheel decreases in diameter it is no longer accurate.
    A CBN wheel of course does not have that problem and you can actually drill a hole through the bar and index it with a pin.
