- I get asked very often about my negative rake scrapers. You can buy them here and there, but it's easy to turn a single bevel scraper into negative rake. I also include a short segment on sharpening carbide cutters used in woodturning.

Thank You Phil... I am very late for the show today (working on taxes, ugh) ... I am close to purchasing my woodworking cutting tools and your tutorial will be valuable to me as I sloooowly try to figure out what the heck I am up to 🙃.... Until next time Phil..... TM
I've been putting off my taxes too, Tuffy. Ugh is right! Plus, property taxes are due. I now pay yearly in taxes what I paid to buy my first house! I'm looking forward to your first real woodturning adventure! 😊
That’s great, thanks Phil! I’ll try this over the weekend!
Cool, thanks, Danella! 😊
Thanks, Mr. Phil for the awesome information.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Good to see you on this no-bowl Philday.
😊
Thanks for this important info. Most turners have always wondered what is meant by a negative rake. You covered it from top to bottom. You gave all of us the ware , when, how, information that was needed. A little refresher course never hurt anyone. Thanks for this valuable info. KEEP ON TURNING 😃
Cool, thanks! 😊
Thanks Phil, I'm glad to see that you sharpen your tools as I do, and those little diamond cards are a godsend - Cheers!
Yup, agreed, Anthony! 😊

Morning Phil. Great 101 in how to sharpen and keep your scrapers in good working condition.
It's reminded me that mine should really get some TLC.
Tea stayed hot but now the cup is empty so time for another one.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Right on, Huw! Keep that cup filled throughout the day and you'll surely have a good one! 😊
Thanks Phil for going over the sharpening of the tools. I like the diamond card nice tool. I remember my Grandpa would always use honing oil on his sharping stone when he sharpened his pocket knives. He would get them razor sharp.
Thanks for the show.

Happy St Patricks Day from Terry in Ireland.. Thanks for the negative rake tips.
Very welcome, Terry, thanks for watching! 😊
Did the same thing with the Benjamin's Best scrapers. Absolutely love them. A nice fine shaving comes off the burr. Not self feeding like regular scrapers.
There ya go, Leo, thanks! 😊
Thank you as well Phil😊.
Great tips Phil, thanks again.
My pleasure! 😊
Thanks Phil! I need all the help I can get!

Awesome tips. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching! 😊
Of course, it's beautiful. My first reaction was that it is missing the pit. I'm a guac fan.

Thanks for the sharpening tip Phil. Very helpful.
Good to know, Doug, thanks! 😊
Im kinda new to turning lathe. I picked up some antique tools. 1 was a old craftsman. But these are very interesting an much better. I got about a dozen. Gotta work a fixture so l can properly sharpen them. Hey lm use to carving tools an a maple mallet to make my cups bowls and spoons. But l do have a big cherry tree cup up. Cause l figure there will be much damage while learning lol. Thanks for all your info. You have a gift thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Bobby! 😊
Thanks Phil I had a go at turning a n unusual piece of beech wood healover today video is on my channel. In the premier your name came up Thank you for producing these great videos
Sounds great! 😊
Thanks Phil. Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed it, Tim! 😊
Thanks Phil!😊
My pleasure, Todd! 😊
Great information Phil, I’m heading down to the shed to find those expensive carbide tips that I couldn’t bring myself to throw away and get them sharpened up, and my scrapers as well. Thanks for sharing.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Good news, Jim, glad it was helpful and you can make those carbides last so much longer! 😊
Been waiting on this one Phil. Excellent job explaining and filling in some gaps for me. Thanks!!!
Good to know, Mark, thank you! 😊
Thanks for the tips. I enjoyed the advice and video
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Lots of useful information Phil. I just bet there will be a lot of people wishing they had not tossed those dull carbide inserts away.
I definitely like using the oil.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks, Gary! 😊 I'm sure the card would load right up without honing oil! And, yeah, those inserts are expensive, as you know!
Yes very expensive. So I decide to 3D print a couple. Well that was sure a waste of time LOL
@@ThePapa1947 Hahahaha!
GREAT STUFF as usual, THANKS
😊
Great tips phil
Cool, thanks! 😊
Have been watching your videos for some time now, maybe a year, and do enjoy your creations! But I was interested in your negative rake scraper. Found out why you like it so much and I will be getting a scraper and grinding it like you do in the video. Thanks for putting out the video.
Cool, I think you will find it easier to use, Darwin, thank you! 😃
Thanks for the how tos. Sharpening is chore I wish I could pass up.
Sorry to hear that. If you have a good grinder and jig, it takes less than a minute. 😊
Thank you for sharing these sharpening tips. I love your videos
Thank you, Roy! 😊
Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for watching, Ted! 😊
THANK U Phil great advice.
Glad it was helpful, Manjit! 😄
Thanks Phil.
Thanks for watching, Laura! 😊
Great information, Phil. Very helpful to many of us! Thanks for sharing, buddy! 👏👏👏
My pleasure, Gord! Thanks for watching, buddy! 😊
One thing nice about the BB scrapers is that they sharpen very quickly
😊
Good info Phil, I bet another of folks Didn't know that carbide cutters could be sharpened, and dang they are pricy.
Thanks for the video.
Glenn
Pricey and some are so thin you can only sharpen a couple times. 😊
Nicely done Phil! It was the angles for the negative rake scrapers that I didn’t know about. I just got a couple of diamond cards for Christmas, so I’ll be for sure trying the carbide sharpening!! Thank you!
Cheers, Rick
Excellent! Thanks, Rick! 😊
Great information, thank you.
😊
Just received my 4 piece Benjamin Best Scrapers today. Used as is on today's bowl, works great. Anxious to see how well it works once I grind the negative rake.
😊
Hi 👋 Phil from Phil, Great tutorial on explaining your negative rake scrapers, I have been doing some Woodturning yesterday and today, for the first time in awhile. And I have been thinking about making a negative rake scraper as I have a large piece of tool steel which in some respects is no good for man or beast, It is part of a cup of soup that I had made nearly 40 years ago so I am thinking of cutting a segment of it, Great tutorial on your negative rake scrapers, and on the cutting angle 📐, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
Cool, thanks, Phil! 😊
As always thank you Phil. I know I can benefit from your experience and knowledge.
Glad to hear it, Steve! 😊
Really interesting Phil, I'll do my best to remember it for if I get to actually take up turning, rather than just watch you chaps.👍😄
There ya go, Jude, enjoy! 😊
Thanks for sharing ❤
😊
I started turning last Fall and have heard quite a bit about the advantages of negative rake scrapers. I just purchased larger sized one and want to turn my small round scraper into a negative rake scraper. Your video is just what I needed. Thanks.
Perfect, I'm glad it's helpful, Boyd, thank you! 😊
I know you don’t have to but I sharpen my carbide tips about every other time I use them. Makes them last longer and your cuts are so much cleaner.
😊
See you for a cup of tea my friend
I'll be here, Huw! 😊
Very informative
Glad you think so! 😊
I need to try these.
Good deal, thanks, Michael! 😄
Next video, Sharpening bowl gouges? Thanks Phil, I’ve been wanting to see what you use!
😊 I did that in another video, Kevin: ruclips.net/video/PUGFEgJTogA/видео.html 9:35
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Phil, I do remember the beginning of that video, but forgot the sharpening part. That was back when you were a young pup! Seen the grands lately? I see our youngest almost everyday since we are babysitting her. She will be 1 in two weeks. Lots of laughs watching that one! Best wishes, Kevin
@@KevinCoop1 Yeah, I see them pretty regularly. Enjoy yours Kevin! 😊
Great information
😊
Thank goodness for the clarification, because I could never quite catch the middle word (rake). I was guessing negative 'edge' scraper.
Ha, happy to help, Audie! 😊
I'm so glad you did a vid on sharpening carbide! I'm new to lathe turning. Got my JET 1221 in November. All I have are cheap WEN chisels / carbide cutters at the moment.
Two questions: Q #1 can please you give a link or brand name for the diamond sharpeners and oil? Also, could you please do a complete bowl sometime only using carbide tips?
I'd like to see how you do it and if you get smoother cuts then I. I've had a few nasty catches and a couple bowls fly off the lathe. My last bowl actually blew up and I ended up going from a good size bowl to a salad bowl with what was left over. Thank you so much Phil!
F.Y.I. I do want to get regular lathe chisels but will have to save money for them, the grinder, CBN wheels, guides....etc I didn't realize this was going to be such an expensive hobby! lol
If you scroll down to "Frequently Bought Together" you'll see everything I have, CJ. At least, in my preferred brand, I do have cheaper diamond cards. www.amazon.com/DMT-D3EFC-Dia-Sharp-Extra-Fine-Diamond/dp/B00006IIO3/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=diamond%2Bcard&qid=1679015962&sr=8-6&th=1
For me to do a bowl using only carbide would be torture for me and probably all the viewers. I don't like using carbide tools and only use them when nothing else will do. I feel like it takes the "Art" out of turning. I can't feel the wood in the same way I can with high speed steel tools. I feel like I'm just steering the tool around and that takes the fun out of turning, sorry.
Yes, sharpening is expensive and I will discuss that in an upcoming video. I probably have about $800 into my sharpening setup.
If it makes you feel any better, in the beginning I couldn't turn worth a darn with HSS and I had bowls flying left and right! I switched to carbide just so I could turn "something!" Still had wood flying everywhere! After awhile I learned how to use conventional tools. Now it is very rare for me to even come close to getting a catch. You need to practice using a light touch, that's the best advice I could give anyone. Hope all this helps! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks for the link and advice!
It'll be at least a year before I can afford lathe chisels and a sharpening system. Until then, I'm going to get diamond cards for the carbide tips.
I'm disabled and was looking for something to help get me off the couch after gardening season is over. So, after watching countless lath videos from great turners and teaches like yourself, I knew I had to try it for myself.
Like you, I love live edge and when possible, with bark :) I've mostly been using wood from a massive 200 yr old Hackberry tree that came down on my property last year. (2 tree companies told me they thought the tree was about 200 yrs old) The main trunk was wider than my truck hood!
The color, patterns and spalting in this Hackberry wood amazes me every time I work with it! Absolutely stunning! Sad thing is, before I thought about getting a lathe, I burned most of the tree. Now I wish I would've known what was hiding behind that bark and that I'd get a lathe!!
Thanks again Phil. Your time answering my questions and the videos you produce are much appreciated! ~ CJ
Thanks!
😊
I am slowly turning my regular scrapers into negative rakes by simply working on the top. But I like to maintain the steep angle on the lower bevel. I’ve also experimented with sharpening so that the grinder wheel is going towards the edge. It feels awkward the have handle lifted up but it produces a bigger burr.
Cool, do what works for you, Bill! 😊
Thank you Phil for this video!!! I wasn't aware of how to make a negative rake scraper or how to sharpen a carbide tip!!! Does it work the same for a square carbide tip???? Thank you again!!!!!
Yes and I should have pointed that out, Lori. Any carbide that has the flat top (all of them?) can be sharpened in the same manner. 😊
Howdy Phil👋
😊
Thanks.
Thanks for watching, Anna! 😊
You should stick your negative rake scrapers in the freezer before using them, when you take them out to use them you'll get an even bigger brrrrr!! 😆 🤣 😂
LOL!
Could you show how you set up your degree angle on your grinder? Also, what grit grinding wheel do you use? Thanks for this video.
Mark, I did show that in another video. I'll give you the link. I have two CBN wheels, 80 grit for shaping and 180 grit for sharpening. 😊 ruclips.net/video/PUGFEgJTogA/видео.html
Excellent information Phil. What type of wheel is on your grinder?
I have two CBN wheels, 80 grit for shaping and 180 grit for sharpening. 😊
Phil, great video once again. I want to purchase a good negative rake scraper and a 5/8’s bowl gouge. Can you make a recommendation?
Thank you, Scott! I only have experience with what I use. Nearly all my HSS tools are Benjamin's Best. Inexpensive, sharpen easily and last a long time. I'm still using my original 5/8" gouge for nearly six years, now. 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thank you, Phil. I have an inexpensive set of Benjamin Best tools but not the larger negative rake scraper from him. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
Thanks for video. One question. Can I change the shape on my scrapers. I have an extra 1/2" square scraper and a round nose scraper. Can I change them into a shear scraper and a bowl scraper? Want to make both negative rake.
Sure you can! Just don't overheat the edges. Take your time, you will get it right! 😊
Thank you Phil! I always have problems transferring that 36deg onto my grinder table, knowing what angle I need between the table and wheel - I’m presuming it’s 180-36=144 degrees…?
I have another video with more sharpening including how I determined that angle, John. 😊 If you want to see it, it is here: ruclips.net/video/PUGFEgJTogA/видео.html
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop thank you again!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop watched and absorbed - I hope! I love the setting at your home and shop, but I couldn’t work with no insulation or heating! I’m a softy, I know!
Hi Phil glad your doing this video. Just wanted to ask is honing oil the same as cutting oil. To me it's the same I could be wrong. Please let me know if they are the same please
Cutting oil is heavier, honing oil is very thin like water, Ray. 😃 I think you would have a hard time cleaning cutting oil off of a diamond card.
@Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop ok I'll go over to Woodcraft and look for honing oil 🛢 I'm like you I like doing things the easy way thank you so much I appreciate that.
As far as sharpening a carbide cutter....The dulling of a carbide cutter is due to the wearing down of the beveled edge where it meets the larger diameter (top) face creating a 90º face to the top face on the beveled diameter. It may be ever so small (.010" or so) and can be seen if held under a light at the correct angle. Lapping the top edge needs to be done enough to get below (remove) that 90º worn face or the cutter will still have issues cutting. A magniying device makes seeing this very easy to see such as a headstrap magnifier or a microscope (if one is available).
Thanks for the tip! 😊 I just go by feel to see if it is sharp again.
Great Video Phil. although the angles would be different depending upon the tool, the exact same process is in order.
Question; Where did you get your Diamond Cards? I would like to get a set myself. ;-)
Amazon, DMT brand, Robert. 😊
Hey Phil. Quick question, what CBN wheels do you use for your grinder? I have the same grinder as you but I’ve been using the stock wheels that it came with. Awesome video as always!
I have 80 grit for shaping and 180 grit for sharpening, Robert. If I were buying them again, I would get 1 1/2" wide instead of these 1" wide ones. Easier to keep the tool on the wheel. I've adapted and don't usually have a problem with it but would still get the wider wheels given the choice. I do like the square edges on my wheels rather than the radiused ones you can get. 😊
Phil, how did you set up the platform to 36 degrees? And how far off of the wheel is the platform? I assume you used a OneWay Wolverine system, if not what did you use. Setting up the platform is the most difficult part. And getting it set up consistently is just as difficult. Thanks.
I showed that in another video, Grumpy! 😊 ruclips.net/video/PUGFEgJTogA/видео.html
Thanks, just watched it.
