Segmented Wood Turning With One Amazing Ring
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 июл 2023
- I glue up one segmented ring and it becomes 5 rings before I am done.
Just another way to do a bowl from a board.
I use Maple, Cherry and Burnt Oak AKA Cambia Oak
I used Minwax Wipe On Poly and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish Restore Paste for the finish.

Attempt number 12 ... let's see if this is deleted .....
I love this type of bowl, I think it's because it's a simple but effective method of making a bowl, not only that but it wastes very little wood, especially if you create it in this way ... it's a beautiful piece 😁
Yes, a shallow bowl version of this would be nice to see, showing how the angle you cut the rings at affects the overall shape of the bowl 👍
Thank you Barry. It was fun to do for sure. It would not have takes much more to have individual segmented rows but it would have take a lot more glue up. I think I have a final design for the shallow version.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love it!! I think a nice shallow bowl would be very nice.. I wish i could get you a few of the rose wood cedar i've been turning. I think you would really Enjoy turning it..
Thank you very much Chris. Shallow bowl will be coming pretty soon.
Rose wood cedar sounds very interesting.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Please try a sallow dish !! As usual a nice job😁
Thanks Jerry. Already made it

Hi Gary...
Really beautiful bowl with an amazing finish...
I would like to see another bowl.. shallow this time.. perhaps without staggering the pattern...
Instructive video as always...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy. I also have thought about not staggering them. Staggering them does make the bowl stronger but I have done these types with only one layer so no stagger on those. But I have an option for making them strong enough.
Not like it will be used for a Frisbee LOL.... I THINK!
Take care,
Gary
I would li ke to see a planter,Goodyear job
Thank you Pierre! Well then here is is! ruclips.net/video/bGcRLGWMn5c/видео.html
Nice job. I would like you to make a shallow dish using multiple angles.
Thank you Don. I have started the design for a shallow bowl. In order to keep it shallow it would have to be just one cut. Each cut will add 3/4 of an inch. But I may consider cutting the thickness down. Hmm you just got me thinking.
Thanks this just might be the answer.
Gary
Great video, thanks
Thanks so much. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Cambia Oak you mispelled it in the description. I had to investigate because I've never seen any type of oak that dark, absolutely beautiful!
Happy you found it. It is only dark because they burn it. Most people call it Burnt Oak but where I buy it they label it Cambia Oak.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Kenneth.
Take care,
Gary
Cool jigs, thanks
Thank you Tim and thanks for watching,

❤❤❤❤❤great job ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much!
That’s a lovely segmented bowl Gary let’s go for a shallow bowl with the other disc…keep turning Gary thankyou for sharing
Thank you Ronnie. I did make the shallow bowl.

amazing piece..👍
Thank you Greg and thanks for watching,
Gary
Now, this is closer to my own style of woodworking... by all means, do the next one at a more shallow angle... Every yootoober that demonstrates the "bowl from a board" technique uses the same 45 degree slope. Would be interesting to see something more unique.
Thank you Dave. I have a few videos showing changing angles on the cut can give you a curved side.
This is what I will be doing with the shallow bowl. I do it by using multiple angles. Here is a link to one of them.

Thank you for your service Gary. My father was a survivor of the Vietnam war and was my real life hero. Happy turning my friend and thanks for your helpful explanation of everything that you do. 😊
Thank you very much Edward. I served in an infantry company in Vietnam from Nov. 67-Nov68
Happy you enjoyed the video.
Gary
l like it l all way like they
Thank you Delbert, happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
I love to watch you turn segmented bowls and bowls from a board! This video is the best of both worlds!!! Thank you!!! I’d love to see you make a shallow bowl or plate with your extra blank!!!
Thanks so much Albin and a shallow turning it will be.
Take care,
Gary
Dish young man
A dish it will be. Young man??? Hey I like that LOL
Go for the shallow style. I'd like to see them stacked at the end.
Thank you David! That is the plan.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Super nice.
Thank you Doug!
I liked your jigs. The bowl is great. From one Papa to another....
Lowell - aka Papa
Thank you Lowell. Happy you enjoy my jigs. From one papa to another.
Gary
Shallow dish, please. I can see the two as a nice set for serving salad and bread. Beautiful! Thank you, Gary
Thank you Gwynn and for sure I will be making something shallow out of the other piece.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks great
Thank you Chris. Much appreciated.
Gary
Gosh, Gary! You just keep coming up with projects for me to try sometime in the future. My list was supposed to be getting shorter, not longer! 😵💫🤣🤪 And yes to a shallower version.
Well I would like to say sorry for adding projects to your list but I wont LOL.
The things I add to my own list just keeps building. Just crazy ideas I want to try.
I knew this one would work but put it off for a long time. I thought it was a pretty good trick in making a segmented bowl
Shallow version is been requested and I think I have my final design. I had to change my drawing a few times till I figured out the easy way. Good thing I did it in my CAD program or I would have wore out the eraser on my pencil haha.
Gary
It does work. I first I calibrated the table saw blade to exactly 90 degrees. Trued up some scrap. Then added scrape to my table saw miter gauge extending it to 18". Then using an electronic/digital angle finder cut scrap until I got the miter gauge to exactly 67.5 degrees. This produced an 8 piece closed center segmentation....YES it can be done!
Thanks Gary!
Yes it sure does!
Gary if I watch enough of your videos I might eventually learn to cut segmented bowls based on your instructions. Has nothing to do with your instructions but my comprehension. I just live to sit back and watch a master do his thing. Very relaxing and pretty soon the video is over and I hadn’t learned anything-just enjoyed the video. I’ve got to start paying attention!!! Thanks buddy.
Thank you very much my friend.
I am sure you could figure it out. Just take one step at a time.
Happy you enjoy my videos.
Take care,
Gary
Just love it. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it Sue and thanks for watching,
Gary
I still have not made a fixture for doing a bowl from a board, but it is on my list. Living in Ariizona, it is hard to work in the garage when the temperature is over 110, and this is the 21 day in a row that it has been this way. So I just sit back and enjoy your vedio's Nice bowl, wonder what it would look like with all segment in sapele.
Thank you Paul. Our son and his family have been visiting her family in Arizona and text me it was 117...yikes.
When it reaches 100 here I am done for sure in the shop. Well 85 is my limit.
Stay cool,
Gary
Oh and it would look great using all Sapele!
Thank you so much for your service!
Thank you very much I appreciate that.
Gary
Gary, a platter would be nice.
It is in the line up and will get to it soon.
Gary
Shallow dish would be good to see how you cut that .
Thanks and I have done it> ruclips.net/video/bGcRLGWMn5c/видео.html

Yes! Do the platter! Very cool bowl!

Thank you Madonna and thanks for watching,

Another amazing project!
Thanks so much Dianne! Happy you like it.

Papa,
Another wonderful creation from your fertile imagination! Very nice indeed. But there is a bit of a problem; I’m dizzy! Some of your segmented works do that to me. Fear not, I’m not driving. And I haven’t been drinking 🫣. I’m sitting in my recliner heaping praise upon an exceptionally talented wood turner. Thank you for a delightful interlude in my otherwise slothful 🦥 day.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Thank you very much Paul. Sorry about being dizzy but at my age I cant tell anymore LOL.
Thanks for watching my friend and God bless,
Gary
Very very nice Gary! and great job explaining!
Thanks so much Luie. Glad you liked the video I sure had fun making it.
Take care,
Gary
I like that segmented bowel.
Thank you very much!
As usual, beautiful work and well explained. I miss wood turning. I haven't done it for a very long time. Thank you for the memories.
Thank you Keith. It is something I really love so I understand how you miss it.
Gary
Really cool , love it 👍
Thank you very much Vini I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,

Beautiful bowl, Gary. Very cool pattern and great explanations. Thanks. 😊😊😊
Thank you Rob. Happy you liked the video and thanks for watching,
Gary
Segments from a board, clever! Thanks for sharing the jigs. I usually catch the ring with a gloved hand, but it's not for everyone and the backer is an excellent idea, as is the right angle. Quicker than using a square each time.
Thank you Josh. I am sure catching with a gloved hand is working fine for you. Myself I like to keep both hands on the parting tool as they can grab at any moment. So because of that I would not recommend catching the ring to anyone else. But it seems to work for you. Not trying to be the safety police but some people have a thing about gloves and moving objects. I got called out for wearing and apron at the lathe even though I wore one all my working days as a wood patternmaker.
The bowl really looks cool with all the segments. I love how easy it was using the "Bowl from a Board" method.
Thank you very much Carol. I have been thinking about doing this for at least 5 years. It was fun to do and sure was easy to get that many segments.
But the down side is if you make 5 separate rings you can have about any shape you want but this way you are limited.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary! Love the color choice!
Many thanks my friend. Was not the top of the line wood but I think it worked out. The roasted oak is a strange wood.
Is sold as Cambia Oak. It is kind of dusty to turn but takes a decent finish.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wowza! This bowl turned out beautifully! I love these segmented bowls, the finish is perfect also. Great job!! Bravo!
Thanks so much Mary I appreciate your watching and commenting.
Gary
Neat! Yeah, a platter would be great!
Thank you Stuart! Looks like it will be a dish/platter
Gary
Absolutely stunning! You make it look so easy! Much ❤
Thank you very much I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
My first bowl (1975) was a bowl from a board. The rings were cut with a Jig Saw. By your standards the cuts were a mess, but useable. I still have the bowl. It was from a piece of 1 x 12 mahogany. Still looks pretty good. I sure wish I had known of your methods and fixtures back then. It certainly would have been easier. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. My first one was made on my band saw making half rings. Way to much work gluing the halves together so I decided to try this and it works.
The fixture for catching the ring has become my favorite fixture I have come up with. No doubt someone will copy it and have it for sale. That has happened with other things I have come up with. But it is so easy and cheap to make most of the things I come up with. I am all about saving money when I can.
Take care,
Gary
Another stunning piece Gary 😍
Many thanks Ian!

Thanks so much and the other one will be coming soon.

Magnificent work !!
Thank you Keith I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I really enjoy watching you work. I’m a new turner. And if I could spend a week in a shop learning, I’d definitely pick you to be a mentor .
I think that is the best one yet. I like the dish Idea. I make 10 inch bowls and always stop at 3 rings. Makes a great serving dish. Now, down to the shop to give it a try.
Thank you very much! I like 3 rings as well as it can leave a much wider bottom and maybe be more useful.
Have fun in your shop.
Gary
What a beautiful piece! Excellent work Gary👌
Thank you very much Jojo...happy you enjoyed it.
By the way I just checked out your channel and left a comment.
Take care,

very good ideas
Many many thanks Toby and thanks for watching,

Thanks for sharing some of your tips and jigs. I vote for a shallow bowl for the next one.
Thank you Rick. I have the swallow one all planned out now.

Yes please the shallow bowl. Beautiful.
Thank you Khan and a shallow bowl is being planned.
Take care,
Gary
I love all your segmented bowls. I would take every one of them. You could sure sell them.
Thank you Patty and I am sure I could sell them but it is hard to do. I get pretty attached to a lot of them.
But I really should figure out a way to sell some as I am running out of room and my wife says 20 turnings on the dinning room table is a bit much LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful once again. I like the plater idea. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Gary.
Thank you Brenda and I have added the platter to the list.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Excellent as always :) Thank you for the bonus section

Nice segmented bowl. I think a platter and bowl combination would look really great.
Thanks so much and a platter/plate will be coming.
Gary
Great segmented bowl Gary. Your next one could be the platter type. So we can see the differences between the 2. Love the bonus section.
Thank you very much Laura. I am working on it right now. Not going to be as easy as I would like but I will get something for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The bowl looks great! I think a shallow dish would cool. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Mark. For sure it will become a shallow dish. It is on the list.

Thank you Richard. I am working on a few designs for a shallow bowl right now.
Thanks for watching,

Beautiful work! Love those three colour woods, they work great with the geometric patterns! such simple methods that create very complex looking shapes!
Thank you very much! It is one of my favorite combinations of woods to use.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thank you Susanne I appreciate your comments.

Beautiful job on the project today, I really enjoy the commentary during the videos, very educational. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Gary and thanks for watching.

You've got this down to a science, Professor! I can tell just watching that it's become second nature to you. I'm sure explaining it to your audience slows the process down quite a bit. This was a joy to watch, my friend! You make it look easy-peasy! As for the bowl, it's gorgeous as always! The segments are perfect, the turning looks great and the finish is superb! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊
Phil
Thank you very much Phil. I guess you could say segments are in my blood. More like stuck in my head though LOL.
I do like making these but what I finished today blows the socks off this one if I ask myself.
All nature in this one. I am still on cloud nine after seeing the beauty we have been given.
Well that is all I can say for now...you will have to watch next week LOL
Take care my friend,
Gary
Absolutely amazing. Really like the pattern. Great job Gary 👍.
Thank you Scott, I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,

I’m just blown away by your work, Gary. And the tips at the end - simple and effective. Thank you so much for sharing 🌞
Thank you very much Ray. I thought I would show these as I think they are very good additions to use. And wanted to show them before someone else took credit LOL
Thanks for watching,

@@ThePapa1947 good shout. Too many people don’t give credit where it’s due 🌞

Thank you Bruce I appreciate you watching.

Your work is always beautiful Gary, and you sure didn't disappoint with this one!
I'd like to see a shallow serving dish with the other segments. Using the same pattern, you'd have a set!
Thank you Heather These are fun to do and I do plan on making the dish.
Been busy today but looking forward to seeing what this pyramid is you are turning.
Gary
That's a good-looking bowl, Gary. Thanks for the tip about the harmonics with dried wood - I will have to try that. Those jigs are so simple yet, so useful. I may have to make some of those.
Thank you very much Qapla! Yes I really think they are a great help and easy to do.
Gary
Nice...yes a shallow one would be great
Thanks so much. I put it on the list.
Thanks for watching,

You are very welcome and thanks for watching,

Really nice bowl, Gary. Another successful experiment. Great tips for the woodturners, too. I vote for the shallow dish.
Bill
Thanks Bill...shallow dish it is.
Gary
Wonderful way to make a segmented bowl. I think the platter/shallow dish would really look cool also. Your method is a great way to cut down on sawdust and get a better yield from the wood.
Thank you Dick. The other disk has not heard but it will now become a shallow dish.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary , that is one impressive looking bowl ! Can you believe the heat we have been having ? It sure makes it hard to get in the shop ! You are the master of segments ! Have a great week ahead !
Thank you Jon. They say it might rain this Wednesday..we shall see. I wait till happens before I predict the weather around here LOL.

Love the extra features section -- "the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey would say!
Thank you James. I was hoping that the last section would get watched.
Thanks for letting me know.

Very handy jigs. The right angle one could possibly be used for other projects. Great looking bowl, one done as a platter would work, in looks just as well as the bowl.
Thank you very much Harry. I am in the design stage right now. Coming soon.
