Wood Turning Segmented Ripple Bowl From A Board

- In this video I will show how I make a bowl using very wavy and twisted segments. It gives kind of a ripple effect. A simple but very effective look. It could be left square and used as a serving board as well.
You will see how I cut the segments, glue them up and make a bowl from a board. I also show how you can do this without a fancy CNC machine. Future video on doing that coming soon.
This can be called a Bowl from a Board or Economy Bowl, Bandsaw Bowl

Hi there, I like how u explain what and why you do things. It helps a lot. You have a nice assortment of homemade tools and fixtures. Please keep up with the videos, I enjoy them and learn new and different techniques.
Thanks so much James I appreciate your comments,
Gary
Thank you, beautiful work. I'm a 45 year cabinetmaker just retired.
Thank you Jim I am a wood pattern maker and retired over 9 years ago.
I appreciate you comment. I have built a lot of furniture and cabinets but not as a living.

Once again You knocked it out of the park!!
Bravo!
Thanks so much Luie It is always exciting to see the shapes that develop after it is turned. I really.

Thank You Gary...WELL I AM AWAKE NOW!!!! Wow-Wee, Zow-Wee, spinning kaleidoscope plus morning coffee certainly got me to sit up straight and pay attention, HA. Your explanation cleared the confusion as to how you created such a confusing, invented woodturning. Lots of unexpected Friday FUN Gary.....TM
Thank you Tuffy and of all of that I have done this one did my head spinning when watching it turn. It was either that or the 3 cups of coffee.
Take care,
Gary
You are a bloody genius, Gary. That is brilliant, my friend. Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. Looking forward to seeing your next video, buddy! 😎😎👍👍
Happy turning,
…..Gord
Ahh gosh Gord I am lost for words..hardly LOL
I value your comments and really appreciate them. You are your videos have been a real inspiration to me in making my videos.
My next one is going to be rather simple but making the video for a mutual friend and you will understand when I get it posted.
Thanks again my friend for your very kind words. Now to try to get the hat off my swollen head LOL
Gary
Sure is a lot more work than just takina a log and digging out whats inside, but what a bowl that is. Great job.
Thank you Garth and I could not agree more. Tomorrow I will be grabbing a log and turn it as long as it takes to see what is inside. I do miss that by the time I finish one of these projects. But I also love making things like this as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, I really like how this "turned" out. Well done.
Thank you I am happy you liked it. Funny I am working on another which anyone can do using a bandsaw.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I make segmented woodturning and your video is great making look like pretty easy but I know is not that simple congrats
Thank you very much. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Well another super fantastic bowl. You must spend many hours thinking about all your different styles / designs. Ron
Thank you Ron I appreciate the comment. So when I get an idea I put it down as a possible thing to do. Then I start drawing it up. At point it seems to be stuck in my head up to the point I go ahead and give it a try. Happy I was able to get this done.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, nice job on both the bowl and video 👍
Thank you very much Malcolm! Coming from you this means a lot. I love everything you do.

Really great design. Cheers mr Gary 👍

Papa I would really like if lived near my here in Ireland and if you did I would be in Ur workshop every day watching your fantastic work 👍👍👍
Thank you John and that would be nice. But I love talking wood turning and wood working so I doubt we would get much done LOL.

Gary
What a beautiful piece!!! Some day when I retire I would like to make my own wood pieces. You should run a school to teach this art.
Thank you very much Atul, I appreciate you watching and your comments.

Thank you Doug and thanks for watching.

I started watching this video and fell a sleep, waking up around 18:00 minutes. What I saw intrigued so much I had to start from the beginning. It was not only very educational but also enjoyable to see how you made this bowl. Great job.
Thank you Johnny Dingo. Happy you woke up and hit the rewind.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful!!! Ready to see next video.
Thank you Rick, I just uploaded a new one for tomorrow and I think you might like it.
Thanks for watching,

Thanks so much Gao!
wow! awsome video!!!!!!! It would be a treat to spend a weekend with you in person from the basics to the marvels you create. If you ever wanted to share your skill with an apprentice, I would travel to you. Thank you so much for sharing my friend.
Thank you Glen I appreciate your comments. I live on the west coast so you never know.
Thanks again the best for a Happy New Year,

Morgan
Thanks so much Morgan, it was a lot of fun but the follow up will be even more fun because more people will be able to do it.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice, Gary! I did like watching it spin! :-)
Thank you Clayton, it can have a strange effect depending on RPM but it is cool to watch.
Gary
I like it. A lot of prep time, but well worth it.
Thank you Rickey and yes there is lots of steps to get here but I enjoy that as well.
But I have decided that next week it will be as few of steps as I can make it.
Take care,
Gary
Yep. Like it. If I were to do something similar, first thing would be to "sturdyfy" my 3018 router. Might be fun! Well done youngster! (I have 6 years on you!)
Thank you Stuart. So I looked up the 3018 and it is a cnc router correct? I should sell one of my CNC mills and get a CNC router. I could get a much bigger cutting window.
Youngster!!! I like the sound of that LOL
Take care,
Gary
The 3018 is indeed a "SMALL" router. Wish I had the resources and room for something much more rugged.
The spray coat seamed to leave bubbles I would have preferred buffing and then the polish . But I am only looking through the video, A wonderful piece of woodwork and I am going to have a go Thanks mate.
Thank you for watching. I think the wood I used is very opened grain. What may have looked like bubbles was probably that. I aways sand the lacquer after 2 coats and then the final coat. There should not have been any bubbles.
Thanks for watching... Gary
Looks great Gary. Pick a favorite--There are too many to choose from. Looking forward to the freehand video version of this.
Thank you Dave and it will be in 2 weeks. I am going to mix it up with a request from a viewer. Which I have not started because I have been building a Catio.
Take care,
Gary
That’s turned out very beautiful Gary love it take care and God bless
Thank you Mike and God bless you as well.

A real beauty Gary .
Thank you very much Jon!

Ingenuity and precision have a name, GARY 👍🏻 How smart is that, and looks terrific! I am impressed by the good use you make of the wood, no heaps of sawdust and quite a big bowl all the same… and it also dawned on me why a harmonica is called a harmonica… I know, took me a while 🙄 Really fun project, Gary, and the wavy theme of the bowl sort of matches the weather here in Europe quite well… Looking forward to the next video, take care, Gary!
Thank you very much for your very kind words. Yes but a harmonica can have a pleasant sound to most. But hearing the wood sing sounds good as well. As long as it cuts smooth.
Here in Oregon we live close enough to the ocean to watch the waves come in and turn to ripples as it reaches the sand.
Happy you enjoyed it!
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful
Thank you John!
Wowzers, Gary! You just keep coming up with fascinating patterns, glue-ups and turnings! I'm beginning to think you spent the 60's in a commune or something! LOL! You must have problems sleeping at night with all these hallucinations running through your mind. 😊 As always, you tie it all up into a neat package in the end. Great finish on this piece, too! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming!
Phil
Thank you very much Phil and you might be onto something.
I did spend a few hours in Haight Asbury in 67 on my way over seas. I guess I will blame it on that and I have not slept well since then LOL.
At one time I played chess with the owner of the first pattern shop I worked at. I would find my mind looking for the next move all the time. Half the time I would get home and not even know it..yikes.
So these turnings are kind of like that. But tomorrow I am going to grab a simple looking log and just Turn Turn Turn...dang it there's the 60's again LOL
Thanks for watching and the chuckle my friend,
Gary
Beautiful piece...
I've watched 3 of your video's this evening and am finding them quite addictive. Keep up the good work 👏

Gary
Thank you so much Gary for using our products over the laquer spray, we get questions every day on what to use our pastes with so showing this one way really helps us out!! Now when someone asks I can refer them to this video.
Thank you Tom and I find it the easiest way to get a nice shine and very smooth finish. I am not fond of the buffing wheel system and I feel this is much easier. A lot of finishes have been ruined using a buffing wheel as well.
Take care,
Gary
It looks more than OK! It’s lovely. Thanks for sharing 🌞

Brilliant bowl Gary. We're all blessed that you share your skills and knowledge. Well done 👏 Take care 🙂

Take care my friend,
Gary
That looks great, Gary. Kind of reminds me of Charlie Brown.
Thank you Rob. Happy you liked it.

I used to cut rings that way. Time consuming. Now, in this situation, I glue half of the board together and another half of the board together. I clamp the halves, and draw ring circles, then go to the bandsaw, set the angles I want and cut out the half rings. When all the half rings are cut, glue them to its matching half ring. Then glue up the bowl. Just thought I would share. Respectfully, Kevin
Thank you Kevin. I used to do them like you are doing and have done many rings for dizzy bowls that way.
Nothing wrong with doing it on the bandsaw either. I just never liked the gluing the half rings together and making sure they are still flat at the joint.
Thanks for pointing that out because others will like to know there are options.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Gary
Beautiful bowl, my bowl turnings have a larger base , but that’s my style, no criticism on your work, I always make my work my own
Thank you Charlie. I normally do not make bases this small. The fact I was wanting more rings to get it taller is why this base is small.
I have been told my bases are too large on some turnings. But like you said I make them my own.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
SUPER COOL!and BEAUTIFUL!!

Really cool bowl. I like how you did it taking a flat thin piece and turning into a bowl.
Thank you Judith it is a good way to make a bowl out of less material. The shape is somewhat limited but it does make a nice effect.

Thank you very much for your kind words Scott...much appreciated.

You are making beautiful turnings with some great design ideas. I wonder why you don't fill the wood grain before spraying your lacquer? That would give you the perfect glass like finish.
Thank you Andy, I have thought about filling the grain but not sure how that would work out for multi colors of wood.
What do you recommend to use as a filler. I would like to give it a try on somethings for sure.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I've spent most of my adult life as a guitar maker. Now semi retired, just bought my first lathe which arrived yesterday to play around with so have been watching loads of videos on the subject. I noticed nobody seemed to fill the grain before the finish. Guitars also often have both open and closed grain woods. Many of us use small batches of 5 minute epoxy with a small cardboard "spatular" to press it into the grain before it hardens. We just do a few square inches at a time then sand it level and move on the the next area. Thanks for the great videos. They are a real huge help.
@@andydepaule3296 thank you and I have thought about building a guitar but have yet to get around to doing it. Bending the sides has always been what stopped me. I would have to make or buy something. I am retired wood pattern maker so I have no doubt I could make one. How it sounds is another question. Plus I already have too many guitars. For sure I could make a solid body electric but would not be as fun.
Now that is interesting.... 5 minute epoxy I would never have guessed. I am guessing the natural color of the wood shows through the epoxy.
So I have used filler on some Oak furniture I have made. I have also sanded some bowls using the finish to wet sand the wood. This makes it's own filler. But not on a mixed species of wood.
Thanks for the reply I like your method.
Gary

Hi. Totally awesome piece of work. Very inspirational. looks like i will be following your channel closely now as i want to catch the video when you put it up that you mentioned. Using the bandsaw instead of the CNC milling machine. Although I think i have almost got my sales presentation sorted to present to the Chief Financial officer (read loving wife) om the benefits of a small CNC Machine. Again thanks for a great video. Cheers
Thanks you Bruce and yes something like this can be made without CNC and you will see soon enough.
I built my first CNC and took and old Bridgeport that was CNC and built a new controller for it so it is much smarter now.
Just make sure you make the Chief Financial Officer so cool things and you will be fine.
Take care and best of luck,
Gary
