Your design is my favorite part, Gary! Sometimes I accidentally get a shape like that but I never start out intending to. It really makes the piece stand out! Your finish, as always, is flawless! Beautiful piece of Cherry from Rick, too! Sorry you had to go through the tedium of dealing with that bark. It can be a real pain. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀

Thanks Phil. Not sure why but I was feeling that shape. I think it was the grain that had me go that way.
      Sure glad it worked out.
Sometimes it feels like that bark is picking on you.but it worked out.
      Thanks for watching my friend,

Thank you Bill. I try to get different shapes or they will all look the same. But I let the grain help in those designs as well.

Great looking wee bowl Gary. So glad you managed to save & keep the bark, that just makes the bowl. Cherry is a stunning looking wood anyway. Such a pity that it's a bit pricey over here in my area.

Wow!! That was a lot of work, but it sure was worth it! It is (like all your work) STUNNING! My friend gave me a cherry log this summer when I was up in Michigan. I figure it will need time to dry (I understand it takes years to dry) so, I figure I will keep learning while it dries and I hope to try and make a bowl like that. If it is even a quarter that beautiful and I will be thrilled!!! Thanks for all the inspiring and educational videos! I always look forward to your new releases!

Thank you Susan. Happy you like it.
If it is still a full round log I would suggest cutting into halves. And seal the ends if you have not. This will allow it to dry much faster.
      Hope that makes sense,
      Gary

@@ThePapa1947I sealed the ends with Anchor Seal. I will see if I can convince my husband to help me cut the log in half! Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you Travis. Not all Cherry is this hard. That said I just finished one that is even harder. But that is because of what the grain was doing inside. You will see in a few weeks.

That is one sharp bowl, great colors and grains. When you were sanding and holding the bowl I recalled another guy on RUclips with a Laguna lathe who took a magnet with some round stock attached to it to hold the button depressed that locks the headstock spindle from turning. One of these days I will get around to making one for myself as I have a Laguana lathe myself. Much easier than trying to hold your work by hand. Thought I would throw that out there ,maybe you will find that a helpful tip?

Gary, Great looking bowl! As you were coming up from bottom to top, I was thinking, he’s taking a lot off! But the ending shape looks really nice. Glad the bark stayed on. When you sand do you have a soft pad on a harder one? The finish brought out the colors and grain. Wonderful bo!

Thank you Skip. Glad you liked it.
Yes I have softer pads that fit on the other which is a little harder. It allows the sand paper to conform to the shapes better.

Thanks for the input. Sawing it off takes away any chance of a shape you might want. But sawing it off first is good if you are a beginner for sure. Or you know for sure you want it round.

Why do you always leave that hump/nipple in the middle of the bowl when you are hollowing? Is it necessary?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Месяц назад +1

Hi Tom, well it is not necessary at all. If you are talking about at the end of cutting I like to take that off with a scraper.
This is easier than a gouge and with the gouge you could cut below the rest of the surface and need to flatten it again.
If you are talking about while hollowing it just sort of gets left because starting the cut dead center is much harder so it is faster just to get some good cuts and come back and deal with it.
