Wood Turning The Best Ever Segmented Turning

  • I turn a very complex segmented turning with 414 segments.
    It was a nice vase shape using 3 types of wood. Bloodwood, Quarter Sawed Oak and Teak. I used Wenge for the base and the top rim.
    Some of the rings were very small so the segments were as well. I had to come up with a way to get them held together while the glue dried.
    Be sure and look for that method. It worked like a charm.

    Absolutely beautiful. It is 8;30 pm here in South Dakota and I just googled the software you mentioned and was expecting to leave message, but to my surprise the owner answered! I probably annoyed him with all my questions but wow what a great experience. i mentioned you referring me to him in this video, and very down to earth and honest man. He did not try to up sale me he sincerely down sold me to a free trial version. So good to be part of this community in getting my start! By the way he did also mention how easy you make things look as an expert experienced turner, which I have mentioned my self in my comments to your videos lol. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction.

      Thank you Tom. I just think of it as cutting one ring at a time. What I actually do is cut 2 or 3 rings. While the glue is drying on the others then I glue a ring onto the turning. And this breaks it up and almost seems like it gets done faster.

      Many thanks Andy. I do have a lot of patience for this type of stuff. When it comes to other things I have no control over not so much LOL.
      I have had one to many pieces of wood launched by rubber bands and I find this much easier than a ring of nails to hold the rubber bands and then fumbling to get it around the segments.

    I love this vase, would you mind sharing the schematics? (angle of cut, ring sizes and such. That really is an amazing looking vase. I also have the excelsior lathe from rockler and the lowest speed it has is 760. its not quite 800 but is that a good enough "low speed" for turning a vase such as this?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Thank you very much. It would be hard to give you all that information here but if you email me I can share the work sheet. Email is in my About Page.
      If you glue it up carefully you should be able to turn this at turn this with your lathe. Just need to keep it in balance while gluing it up and turn the rings as you go.

    Very very nice Yoda! I really liked it before you finished it (as well as finished of course 😉). Wondering if you, or anyone, has ever tried any of the really natural floor finishes like Osmo Polyx Raw or Treatex Natural?
    I made a wedgie sled this weekend, have been watching Earl and his string clamps - and watching you and your segmented journey... I'm slowly building up to having a go!
    Thank as always.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      Thank David.
      I have not tried any of those finishes. I find most of those types need to be redone after a while. This sits on a shelf and that finish will last.
      I have used Howard Butcher Block oil for snack bowls. As well as Acks sanding paste and his polishing paste. Both food safe.
      I no made Earls clamps but have found the stainless steel hose clamps easier to use. And the stainless ones work great and are strong. The other ones just do not last.
      I get mine on Amazon.
      Thanks for watching.

    This must have taken forever Gary. Honestly, I don't think I'd have the patience for a piece like this. The turning is the least work, just endless cutting & glueing segments. But the result is a unique piece, you don't find these in a thrift store. 😎

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад +1

      Well Leo it did take awhile. I think sitting in a barber shop getting my hair cut is endless. Playing chess can seems
      endless just to get to one move.
      Doing these I do not consider endless. It is process to reach a final goal. Like playing chess each step needs to be thought out to achieve success.
      I think what I did for a living would seem endless as well. Building patterns takes a long time for some of them. Weeks and months. But like chess each step needs to be thought out to avoid not leaving a way to get to the end.
      But I am following this one up with a couple of very back to basic wood turnings.
      I sure hope these do not end up in the thrift store!

    Besides the lacquer what did u do to prevent the bloodwood from bleeding? Did not see you apply any oil. Does oil. i. e mineral oil cause it to bleed more?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  10 месяцев назад

      I only used lacquer. I have found that anything that does not dry right away like a fine spray of lacquer will cause the oils to come out of the wood. If you were to brush the lacquer on it would bleed badly.

    Hi Gary - great looking project. I have a question regarding that base and the first ring. What process do you use to get the "humps / bumps" off of that first ring that goes up against the base? When I've made segmented bowls, turning away those bumps on the bottom ring invariably has me accidentally hitting the base, making a mess that I need to get into and clean up. How do you avoid that? I was thinking of perhaps gluing the bottom few rings together, without the base, and then placing them in my Longworth jaws in order to clean up those bumps prior to attaching the base. How do you do it?
    Regards, Jim

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Hi Jim, if you are talking about the flats on the inside I just glue one or two segments on then I round up the inside of those rings and blend them into the bottom. I like to leave a little fillet at times so it makes it easy. But if I want a sharp edge I just carefully turn the inside to meet the bottom.
      Sorry about the late reply been busy with a few things.
      Thanks for watching.

    For those who are interested, here below is the formula for calculating the outer edge length of a segment for any diameter and number of sides. For convenience, I made up a spreadsheet table for rings up to 10" diameter and 14 sides, and placed it on the shop wall.
    Segment Edge Length = Diameter x tan(3.1416/number of sides)

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you for the formula. For those who do not like the math I recommend this free App for your phone.
      Segment Calculator 2 It will give not only the segment length but the width of the segment and how much material needed.
      I have extra phones I use for various things. One is my shop phone for doing this. Another I use as a GPS and mapping phone for long bicycle rides. They do not need to be connected to any service to run these apps.

    Gary, very nice turning and good build info. I’m in the process of building a segmenting sled like yours, thanks for the idea. I have a very segmenting newbie question, when you make strips up to cut the segments which way do you orient them? Obviously the grain runs along the axis of the stock, but which do you set up to be the outside of the turning, side or face grain? Thanks for the help. BTW, I think I’m going to need to build a steady rest, any help there will be appreciated. Keep the informative videos coming. Cheers, Tom

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Tom I appreciate you watching and commenting.
      So the glue joints are always end grain. Depending on how thick the rings are can make a difference. On a thicker ring I will most likely use the edge of the board facing out. But there are times I will cut them to use the face of the board facing out. And that is what I did with the quarter sawed Oak.
      Hope that makes sense.
      As far as the steady rest someone ask about that earlier. If you send me an email and put steady rest in the subject line I will send you some photos. Check my About page for the email

    Nice vase! Is the top and bottom Wenge a solid piece or segmented? I recall someone saying that they needed to be segmented to keep things from cracking.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Jesse! They are solid and I even have had people say that segmented bases are not good for the same reason and they suggest a floating bottom. I think it might have a lot to do with where you live.
      I live in Oregon and have turnings with both segmented and solid bottoms that are close to 50 years old and have not been an issue.

    Beautiful piece of work Gary, there's some hours invested, but it really shows. What is the best way to to flatten rings that you have found ? Cheers Geoff

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Geof. What I do is flatten one side on my 14" disk sander. Then I either glue them in place and flatten them on the lathe(which works good) or in this case I hot glued them on a board and flattened them on using my milling machine. If I had the room I would get a drum sander which would do a good job. But actually my mill is probably faster on this size of ring.
      But the easiest way for someone without either would be to sand one side flat then glue in place and flatten on the lathe.
      Hope that helps and thanks for watching,

    Do you figure your segments and rings manually or do you use a software program?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      All depends on how complex it is. I use a phone app called Segment Calculator 2 for simple things. But for this I used WoodturnerPro and 3D Design Pro. I made a basic sketch and took a picture of it. I then brought it into 3D Design Pro and adjusted it. I then sent it to WoodTurnerPro where I did a final adjust to get the shape I wanted.
      All could have been done with paper and pencil but the software helps in conserving material.
      Hope that helps.

    This was a lot of fun just watching the piece grow and come together, Gary. The Wenge is absolutely perfect for bringing this piece together. I really like the defining look it gives to the overall turning. Your design is impeccable! Your joints are impeccable! Your finish is extraordinary! Absolutely one of your best segmented pieces ever! I REALLY like it! Have you considered entering this or some of your other segmented pieces into a county fair or something like that? I think you'd come home with a trunk load of trophies. So well done, my friend! 😃👍 🏆

    • @ThePapa1947

      Hi Phil happy you enjoyed it. I must say I had fun stacking those rings watching it grow out of the bench. Now if I could just do it without needing to make all those rings!
      I knew I wanted to use the Wenge but kept fighting with myself because it can be a bear to turn and end up having a big piece chip out right before your done. That is where the NRS comes in handy.
      No I have not thought about entering it in fair at all. I guess I am kind of an odd hermit when it comes to that stuff. Or I am just odd LOL.

    Gary - That is spectacular! Well done! The clear lacquer finished the woods in their natural colors, I like that. I'm thinking of trying some segmenting, but my stiff arthritic fingers tend to fumble and drop small items, not sure if it's for me. Do you have a rough estimate of the hours (days) involved?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you very much. Yes I do like to go with lacquer to keep the color of the wood natural. I get hand cramps in both hands and often at the same time. It makes handling those small pieces a pain at times so I understand what you are thinking. All you can do is give it a try. There are other ways to get the glue on the segments.
      Some people will tape them to some masking tape, get glue on the joints with a small brush then pull them together with the tape.
      That might be a great option for you.
      So I am guessing 15-20 hours to make this. I once kept track of a dizzy bowl and that took 35 hours and I had not put the finish on it yet.
      I kept track because someone told me that another one I made must be worth at least $50.00. I just laughed and figure the next one I made I would keep track of time.

    That is fantastic Gary! Q: When you use wood glue mixed with dust to fill cracks how do you prevent staining of the wood by the glue? Do you add it early o so it is turned off or do you put a sealer on the wood to prevent adsorption or something else? When not in a rush, do you find that method just as good or possibly better than CA glue? Could you use it for cracks roughly 1/4” wide?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Lee! So if it is early on no need to seal the wood because it will get turned away. But if you are done then yes seal the wood. This goes for CA glue as well. I have filled cracks and holes larger than 1/4" and do it in stages.
      I do not use the wood glue filler that much. The CA is faster is the main reason.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much Jim.
      I have Woodturner Pro. It comes with something called 3D Design Pro I can make a pencil sketch and bring it into 3D Design Pro and adjust it to refine the shape. Kind of like modeling clay. Then export it to Woodturner Pro. At that point I can add rings and segments per rings.
      And I can still drag the shape around a bit. I do not go for a perfect blend because I save that for when it is glued up and on the lathe.
      I highly recommend it if you are looking for a good software. They also have something called Segment Pro which is simple but you can not change very much and are stuck with preset designs.
      I purchased the package deal but think the first two I mentioned are the best.
      Hope that helps, if not let me know.

    You already know that I’m a fan and making some progress copying you. That is a lovely vase produced by an artisan. 🌞

      Thank you very much Ray. I spent some time changing the shape to this. You are certainly welcome to copy this one.
      Take care,
      Gary
