No matter how big this channel gets, PLEASE don’t ever forget this format. Big budgets and fancy shops don’t make a channel… it’s the people and the projects. Hunting for a tools in a buddy’s garage and making multiple Harbor Freight runs is something we can actually relate to.

Great video guys! Just a tip, when using especially the micrometer (this is true for a Pachymeter too, but it already has less precision then a micrometer), always read the measurement without removing the micrometer from the object you are measuring if possible. Micrometers are really sensitive and you can change the measurement quite significantly when removing it, also, when you remove the micrometer with it locked on the object you can wear the surface way more than usual, and that is really sensitive, so you will have a decalibrated micrometer pretty fast, giving you wrong measurements. Also, when removing it from the object, always retract the spindle first. (I'm a mechanical engineer)

I just watched someone in an full shop tear down my specific engine on a different channel and it seemed very unobtainable for a guy like me, who has never torn down my engine. The strong suit of this channel however, is that these guys are doing essentially the same thing on a foreign system to me, yet explain thing so well, thoroughly, and simply, that I am emboldened to tackle the same tear down project I previously felt discouraged from. Around 18:00 and 20:00 you guys mentioned the clearance numbers- being a machinist I had to say something. You read them as 18,19,20 thousandths which would be .018”. I’m sure it was actually .0018 which is one thousandth and 8 tenthousandths read as “one and eight tenths”. 18thou would be a lot of main bearing clearance haha. A good rule of thumb is one thou (.001”) for every inch of journal diameter. For aluminum blocks you want them a little tighter.
Just trying to be a helpful comment, love that you guys are getting into this stuff. Good luck!

" read as “one and eight tenths"
Thanks for mentioning that, I was curious if there was a concise, clear, recognized way to state it.

Mechanic here. Was wondering who else picked up on the decimal place error.

As a non Machinest that occasionally uses micrometers my Machinest friends have told me you should never hold the calipers by the C, only the spindle. They tell me the heat of your fingers can effect the reading. As a Machinest is it really an issue to hold by the C? Or put the C in a vice even gently?

@@currentliveoccupant Theres nothing wrong with holding the body of a mic. Heat will effect size; all the specs from manufactures are at “room temperature” little over 70°F. That means when measuring for inspection the part should also be at 70° to be most accurate. Your hand won’t heat up the mic enough to make a difference though.
You don’t want to clamp real hard in a vise because you can effect the reading or damage the mic. These guys had some soft jaws in their vise which helps. They do make special mic specific stands for setting a bore gauge.

@@thomascarver1327 thanks for the reply. I always thought the special handeling was more of a overthought theory.

I love the vibes here, just guys doing work they want to do, rather than it being all corporate and stuff. Nothing against Donut, but sometimes when a channel gets too big and goes corporate it does lose that personal touch that you get with smaller channels. I think it was a great move to leave and start your own thing and now you're actually working for yourself doing the projects you want.

No shade to donut but this is what I wanna get back to seeing
The way jerry and jobe explain things makes it easy to follow and understand, which is what brought me to donut in the first place.
    Well done lads 👏🏾👏🏾

I hope Donut can somehow turn around but I doubt it. I stopped watching their videos a while ago once it got to the current style but I still check out their merch every once and a while. Their videos may be meh now but they still got great shirts
