- Today we take a look at two very historical keyboards. The IBM Model M, and the older sibling, the IBM Model F, this being the Model F/XT. Both Featuring probably the loudest sounds possible with their buckling spring designs. Check out Shark's website here: sharktastica.co.uk/

Oh hey I wasn't expecting to see you here.
Goat
Damn, shark is here
Hi shark!
Great to see Shoobs give attention and due respect to these two titans of the vintage side. We should clarify though that the Model M being a membrane doesn't mean you have to bottom out in order to actuate the switch, in the way a rubber dome needs to. The buckling spring works as a solution to create mechanical travel and actuation, even for a membrane actuation.
And for anyone who's interested but who may be intimidated by having to go through the vintage second hand market, Unicomp uses the original tooling (although with some changes to the build and adding alternative models but with the same switch design) to continue producing the Model M brand new, long after IBM put it out of production, and at still very reasonable prices. On the other hand, the Model F can only be had brand new as a very expensive reproduction.
when I was younger my mom used to do medical transcription, this was the sound I woke up to many mornings as a child, very nostalgic
If this is the direction this channel will go in, you've got yourself a new fan.
Love this video, man. Great attention to detail and a fun look at the history of keyboards. We need more of this!!
I'm just getting into the keyboard hobby. Which by the way , I now understand why so many people warn newbies about joining this expensive ass hobby. Regardless I did, and now I''m here fawning over the Model F keyboard which I literally had zero knowledge of prior to this video. I LOVE the layout of the F row on that board. Not so much a fan of those small pyramid shaped tab, cap, and shift buttons though
Check out Joe Ellipse’s New Model F project. And prepare to be broke. 😁
The XT layout is wild lmao it's to avoid using stabilisers
As someone born in 1981 I can tell I learned to type on that bad boy. I used to have one. Drove my parents nuts. It was awesome.
Amazing video! Another small thing I would like to add that gave the Model F an advantage is that it has N key rollover meanwhile the Model M being a membrane is limited to 2 key rollover (information stolen from Chyrosran22 I took it from his brain and I have no intent to give it back anytime soon). So, if your dream is to play League of Legends and simultaneously flash and press alistar Q E and R all at the exact same time while using an old IBM Buckling Spring keyboard, you better get your ass a Model F.
this time, shoobs decided to talk with a script
Very well researched and informative video. Great job!
This, this is something that I would like to see from Keyboard RUclipsrs. Introducing something that's completely different from just MX style switches. I honestly gave more respect to you there! ^^
I actually got a Model M from 1987 that's ISO layout and with Arabic sublegends and after I bolt-modded the keyboard. It's the best feeling and sounding keyboard in my collection atm and it beats out my Keychron Q1 with any config, switches, and mods I gaven to it.
You planning to try out other switch types or make a custom build out of a different switch design suck as Alps? I plan to make a custom Alps keyboard build under 200 bucks!
yeah I wanted to branch out a bit, I already have a few alps stuff so is definitely down the line
@@ShoobsTube oooooo okay then, really looking forward to it! ^^
@@ShoobsTube you should try the dental floss mod, I did it for my model m, it removes the spring ping completely and doesn't affect tactility (no mushiness) also it's completely reversible (you can do it to mx switches too btw).
Shoobs spoiling us with that torso shot. Nice.
10:26 The original patent name from Richard Hunter Harris is also a good one, he gave it the slick name of "Catastrophically buckling compression column switch and actuator". It really rolls off the tongue.
Mr. Shooby Booby is yet again sharing his divine knowledge with us
Hell yeah, I'm currently typing on one of these keyboards, a good ol' Model M! This keyboard was THE keyboard that got me interested in typing on mechanical keyboards, and was probably the first "proper" mechanical keyboard that I got (technically the first one was a cheapo Chinese MX Blue clone keyboard off a friend, but I don't really count it that much). I typed on it for most of a year and a half before getting my Novatouch. While my taste in keyboards, and my personal preferences on keyboards in general have changed a lot, I still find myself typing on my Model M whenever I'm in the mood, one of those times being right now. I encourage all of y'all to get a Model M or F if you can - no matter if it's an excellent second-hand option, a Model M from Unicomp, or one of those excellent Model F repros out there. Maybe one day, I'll get myself a Model F.......
I am very happy to see some vintage boards here. I am also very jealous. Those NOS beauties are truly something else.
Welcome to the keyboard enthusiast community Shoobs!
Yooo! Love how your intro kind of devolving, but also evolving
That intro is amazing, well done!
Amazing editing and video overall
I thought I wanted a custom keyboard, built one and then I found the Model M. Mistakes were made, I have the F62 now cause I just love buckling spring feel and I also enjoy annoying everyone.
Loved these
at first i heard 'cope being the most popular drug of the 80s' because thinking that sounds good in any way is the epitome of cope
It’s crazy when I was subbed at 5k on my old account and came back on a new one to see your at 90k!
another banger video from shoobs
that ping from the springs
That Win95 startup music takes me back to my first gateway computer I bought.
i think the best description might be another one used in the original patent. "CATASTROPHICALLY BUCKLING COMPRESSION COLUMN SWITCH AND ACTUATOR"
Based Shoobs coming in with the VA-11 Hall-A OST. I see you and appreciate you, fam.
Great video, thanks for posting!
Nostalgia just hit me
new old stock is a tough flex my boii
I appreciate the effort put into that intro segment although that's not how tinnitus is pronounced.
He Shoobs, did you check out the IBM Tulip Proto Keyboard?
great video mr. shoobster
I miss that sound…thank you win95
I own both of these. I love them, especially the aesthetics.
I'm finally getting my new model f next week after ordering it two years ago 🙏
hopefully you can get a hold of alps as well
Great video
finally managed to type on a model m for the first time yesterday. A rare tkl one no less. Fucking amazing.
You should look at the OG Dolch PAC keyboards!
This needs the foam keyboard by shobs
You think these bois are loud? Just wait till you get your hands on beam springs with solenoids
Is this Va-11 Hall-a soundtrack? My god so beautiful
you should try to lube the springs to help lessen the spring ping, it would be a cool video if not just to see if it works and also to piss off model m fanboys
you cant lube them. however you can add in pieces of fluffy dental floss to fix the ping (before you start saying anything about mush, no it doesnt alter feel)
Lubing springs won't make them stop making a sound when they bend and slap the inside wall of the switch
He actually made his intro more scuffed. what.
Model M is still on my cart. Gotta pay the bills first before buying me one of these.
I thought I wanted one of these but then I heard the typing test... ow... ow... ouch ow ow...
Always first to shoobs vid, love ur vids shoobs, I just did an Emilia on a lilac ciel

Seriusly what the fuck shoobs the vid is damn funny and what the hell with the meme shit OMG it make my day Shoobs
love the intro
Holy crap I'm 100% I had model m at home I swear. I remember the spring noise it brings me back memories I was trying to press keys as light as possible late at night to not wake anyone up but these springs were loud as f. I asked my parents if they still have it. My mom said yes and she gave me a noname vintage mambrane keboard. My disappotintment is unmeasurable. I know it is somwhere. It has to be. I don't believe they just threw it away. I don't belive it 😢
Nostalgia, I see
Rumor has it, that giga chad uses a model f
Hot keyboards man

Coolness. I wonder how it now compares to the premium keyboards with new tech like the ones from Keycult, KBDFans, Novelkeys_ or RAMA?
Stay safe. God bless, Rev. 21:4

I have a Cherry MY keyboard and it changed my life.

*We're broke now (typed on a gen 0 terminal m)
Woooohoooo
NCR80 is the modern equivalent IMHO
God that keyboard sounds horrible. Imagine being in an office and just hearing that everywhere
i would love hearing that everywhere
@@ekho1464 to each their own

The fact that young folks can‘t appreciate the beautiful sound of a model m and rather go for soft, muted sounding keyboards just proves how weak and effeminate the kids are today. Sad.
Fucking sounds like shit. My roommate has one. I don't get it.
That sounds... repulsive
