Great video again Rick. How about a follow up with same everything but the best driver/ ball combo between the three. Would be interesting to see say Taylormade driver and Callaway ball etc.
Great to see you back testing Rick. I’d pick the Titleist on looks. The others are too gimmicky. Plus, the Taylormade M7 will be out next week most likely.
I had tested f9 cobra, epic flash, m6 taylormade and m5 taylormade. Winner by far was m5 longest and average. Great on heel shots also. But as you all know you must get the right shaft.
I use a Callaway Diablo Octane because it’s a good driver that I could afford. I usually use Callaway Hex Chromes because they are also decent balls I can afford. Great video tho. I love watching all your content.
Just a fun test, but feels like TS3 would be more reliable with good distance and some more spin. Needs further testing though. Could do the same with Mizuno, Srixon, Wilson as they too have drivers and balls.👍
I am going to be playing the TP5 this year with my Cobra Fly Z+ driver. I bought the driver new(used) old stock off Ebay last fall for $63. I had found a TP5 lost golf ball at a course I play a lot. Only played with the driver twice before the end of the season. I played with some TP5's on one of those two rounds, I drove the ball WELL. I drove three short par four greens!!! 281 yds., 279 yds, & 289 yds (downhill). For me a 50 year old (12 handicapper).....that was awesome. I cannot wait to play a full season with this combo.....
Rick the real question is which driver is the most accurate and forgiving. For most of us, distance shouldn’t be the first category we look for in a driver. For me personally, I hit plenty far. If I end up short, I have the clubs to make up for that. My problems are day to day consistency on my driver accuracy. One day I’ll hit long straight bombs, other days I’m off in the rough or under trees.
Brian Dovey more distance doesn’t equal lower scores. I’ve gone from 19 handicap to 9 handicap in the last 6 months and my drives haven’t gotten any longer. My short game is what brought that handicap down
As an 18 handicapper, I bought a new Titlist set but didn't like the driver. I went on Gumtree and saw an older Srixon Titanium, 13 degree driver for $50. I play in a group where the other guys are off 14-18 and have quite expensive drivers. Most of time when I'm on my game I can outdrive them, hitting the ball lower and getting more run on, over 200metres plus. In my opinion the most telling factor for the vast majority of golfers is technic.
My son has a 2nd hand M5 .He tried in range pro shop and it came up long . Back in the monitor room he gets 340's out of it compared to his Titleist TS2 (2015/16) ? He gets 300's . When he puts both bias weights up in low spin and rips it ,(the straight ones)were going over 360. I should say some were 360 onto another golf course .But in low spin it is a fearsome beast. He already has a good launch ,so this is not for him a problem .NB He hits Pro v1 's but cannot afford to practice on and off with ,so has box of Srixon softs .The spin and yardage of these were quite a bit less than the Pro vs. This would not suit everyone however as it requires a good swing and may not be the most forgiving of those clubs you tested.
I did an experiment in my high school physics class to find which golf ball brand goes the furthest with the same amount of force Surprisingly, Noodle brand balls went the furthest followed by Callway then Top Flight Those were the top 3 but I tested close to 20 different brands of ball
Yes top flight goes very long cause they are harder , so they go far on the drive and don't spin as much , you can't backspin them on the green , that's why people don't play them
Great stuff as usual! I would love to see just a full ball comparison between the three. Same clubs. Driver, 7 iron, and wedge. I want to see the spin and distance numbers. I've been playing Chromesofts for the last 2 seasons. Best feel and spin imo but the TP5X sounds very interesting to me!
How are you possible getting 292 carry out of 162 ball speed? It should be closer to 270 when I look on Flightscope Optimizer.... That is around my ball speed and I don't get nearly 292 carry with Trackman at 1.50 smash.
jmj5150 I’m a multimillionaire and yet I agree that the 2016 M2 & old GBB Epic SZ flat out outperforms the 3 new clubs. Kinda weak argument coming from a degenerate like you. Stop it, will ya?
funny thing is..the title is LONGEST BRAND...it has got nothing to do with model..come on mate..of course wat u're saying is also quite true..but for god sake..look at the title mate..
It really doesn't matter for someone like me, an average 18 handicapper. It's the Indian not the arrow. I bought my Callaway RAZR Fit pre loved for about 45 quid on eBay. I don't really worry if it's not the perfect fit for me. I upgraded the shaft for £25 through my club pro to Matrix Ozik black tie. It's so stable that even my misses are playable. Nice sound feel and looks good - all for £70. I can't see myself changing in a hurry. I use Wilson DX2 lake balls in the winter as anything will stop on greens and they work out at about 45p each. Dx3s or similar in the summer for a bit more spin
Fascinating to see the Titleist has the fastest ball speed. The M5 was furthest purely because it was the lowest spinning!! You should do a ProV1 vs Pro V1x test vs 2018 balls - surprised you've not done that yet
After several reviews where the current drivers are close in distance I tried the Cobra F9 against my Callaway Epic, difference in distance, 1 yard. Dispersion roughly the same, I'm keeping my Epic
I use a ball that sounds good and feels good at impact. The feedback is helpful feedback and builds confidence and increases swing speed, which yields more distance.
Can recommend the F9. Very forgiving, sounds amazing and seems to have a very straight flight even on off centre hits. Absolute fairway finder. Plus Rickie Fowler and Bryson Dechambeau use it...so it's cool.
I absolutely love the look of the F9 but I like the adjustability of the M5. I’m heading to Portland next week and hitting them on a simulator to see which one suites me better!
Take it from someone who sees these clubs every day, go for the cobra it's cheaper and keeps up with the big name even if you hit it 3-5 shorter it will save you in the long run with price.
I just bought the Taylor Made M5 today, smashed some balls on the range with it, and it felt good. I’m looking forwards to hitting some decent balls out on the course to see how it performs. Great video, Rik 🙏
When I used The titliest jvs driver back in the day I used any brand ball but leant towards the mid range titliest ball. I then went to a callaway driver but didn't change directly to their balls. I also tried Taylor made, Wilson deep red (remember those) and cobra drivers and NOTHING beat my jvs. I recently purchased one off eBay and I still smash high yards considering I'm 10 years older and a hell of a lot physically stiffer. I used to carry 300 yards for a 310-320 finish. I now hit 285 yards for just under 300 yard total. My longest drive was at goodwood country club of 360 yards (on level ground) to run through a par 4. That was a jvs 8.5 degrees. Far easier to hit than any club I've tried... even the up to date clubs
i do use the same brand ball/driver and love it.Tough i don't go top shelf on the balls or driver. TaylorMade burner balls and a RBZ driver gets me out 320+ yrds.
Rick Shiels Golf I play the original M2 with the TP5x. Not a fan of twist face so unless the new generations give me up to 10yards not gona switch. Would love to see same ball diff heads and same heads diff balls though Rick. Thanks
I personally think Taylormade build quality to be shoddy at best I don’t care if it is longest. I guarantee when the head snaps off and follows the ball down the fairway it will truly be the longest club.
I'm curious to see if the TP5X would improve the numbers from the other two drivers? Or test all three balls with all three drivers to see which combo is the best. Thanks.
I’m wondering, I’m not sure if u were warmed up already or not, but what if you started with the M5 driver and finish with the Callaway driver, to see if you would get the same results.👍😃🏌🏼
Was wondering the same thing actually. And if hit in order, there is the potential to show a considerable order-effect (often comes up in scientific research as well). You could do random ordering throughout the test but I can imagine you also want the best numbers out of it. In an ideal world, you would replicate the test numerous times with different orders etc., but it would be nice to see if we get the same result from just jumbling up the order in only 1 subsequent replication. Would definitely like to see that
Good test Rick. I use the M3 w/440 head and the TP5x most days. I will say that I find the Titleist AVX does give me slightly more distance off the driver but only use it on very windy days...keep switching between both.
Titliest TS2 Even Flow 65g shaft, and Chrome Soft X. Fitted for both. I have tried the TP5x but this combo gives me length and forgiveness. Not the longest of the ones tested, but the combo I keep in play the most.
Geovanny Matias it’s also because if he hits a dodgy one with the Taylormade one the head might fly off or the shaft might snap, that’s just from personal experience and my mates personal experience, no bias involved. I’d never buy any Taylormade clubs again, they aren’t made to last like Titleist and Callaway clubs are
From the shots we saw, you hit the Titleist combo the straightest. For me, you can take the extra 5 yds of distance and I'll take the one with 10 fewer yds of dispersion. I'll enjoy controlled approach shots from the fairway.
I would have loved to see some more comparisons i.e. the total shot average comparison, or even the 5 worst shot comparison and even the best shot comparison. Could you post the complete shot data in the description for us?. Amazing that the M5 was the lowest club speed and ball speed and yet had more distance.
Interesting that the last test you did won...possibly due to getting into the swing of it/warmed up/relaxed. Would love to see the F9 Stack up against these as the value price is not to be discounted.
I'd suggest doing this test once per month for an entire year and see where they all stack up in the end. Now that's a sample size you can put out there. Good videos, and I'm a TaylorMade fan myself but I personally believe ( ignore marketing ) and find last years model on a sale and go with whatever one you like the best...our mid handicap swings have WAY more variance than these top manufactures clubs do.
Finding the "longest" driver is always a fun topic to discuss and look at. For most of us sound, confidence in appearance and dispersion are going to help us hit the bomber straighter. I'm fairly new to Rick's channel and wonder if I've missed a test on driver dispersion, with consideration to human error factor. Which driver face gives better results across the face, vs. those only hit in the sweet spot. Thought? Love your video's Rick. Your the best out there!
Great VDO - Interesting. I purchase three - you demo'd two of the three. My sleeper is the WILSON Staff DUO URETHANE for cold weather play, (55 compression).
I just purchased a new Cobra F9 driver and I use Taylormade balls the combo for me has been really good awesome sound from the F9 that nice crunch sound. I was using proV1 for a while that was until I got the F9 driver the Taylormade TP5X balls seem to just love this driver it's been working for me so I'm gonna stick with it for a bit. Awesome reviews and tips Rick keep them up! 🏌️♂️⛳⛳⛳🏌️♂️
Hey rick, great video. Do you think that the last driver, the taylormade, was the longest because you were able to warm up with the other two? I don’t know how long you have the drivers but what if you repeated the experiment the next day with the order switched? This goes for a lot of your reviews and tests. Love your videos!
Great test... I love your comparison and the professional and fair way that you conducted it! If anything, I was guessing that you might have been a little fatigued moving in to the Taylor Made phase.. I currently hit a TM, I now want the new TM.. Thank you RS!
I would think that clubs and balls are designed to work together. However, since 90% ish of balls used on tour are the ProV1, it would be wise to make sure driver designs work with that ball. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday. Myself, I still rock the M1. Its a cannon. I use the ProV1.
I use Snell golf balls because they are reasonably priced balls with good performance.. I've said in the past to do a comparative with balls like Vice, Snell, Cut to see how they perform.
I've used all three brands over the past few years, but I have to say the Epic Sub Zero with a Tour AD TP is the best I have ever played. I love how it works with the TP5X. I've tried a bunch of the 2019 drivers but nothing comes close for me. Think this will be in my bag for a while to come
Very interesting. I am currently trying new golf balls to see if anything suits me better than the z star. Have to say the tp5x I used on Saturday went well but cud notice more roll out on chips
I thought the driver to beat was the Cobra F9! would love to see a longest drive comparison with the M5, EF SZero, TS3, ST190, F9 and G410... all with the same ball, and shaft (or matching as close as possible). Your normal swing speed, with all data and dispersion graphics. I know is too much asking, but it would be spectacular!
I totally agree on the loudness of the Epic Flash! So loud that I could not stand using it, so I returned it. I don’t care how far it goes. My ears were ringing after a session at the range.
I play Callaway Supersoft because I'm a senior, mid-handicapper who likes the soft feel and price point. If I were a better striker of the ball, I would consider a more premium ball. I will play ProV1's on occasion, but they are usually gifts and not ones I would normally buy.
Rick, I wish you would have used the same brand ball with all the drivers. How do we know it was the ball that gave you the better distance and not the club?
Have a taylormade 2016 M2(the goat).. having a hard time letting it go but these new drivers are very enticing. Is it a better idea to take my current driver and see if a fitter can fit me out of it? Or just buy a driver that I like and test on my own? It seems that all of these new drivers from top brands are all very similar in distance and forgiveness, I wonder if during a fitting I’m maybe a little nervous and could skew the results. Thanks for the great videos/podcasts, keep it going!
Think you should have made the test with the premium AVX for Titleist. Thinkt that TaylorMade and Titleist would have switched places. Best wishes from Austria!
While watching the PGA tour last week and watching Rickie Fowler's ad, my take on it was that he had to redo all his club selections because he started playing the TM ball and it was playing longer. I would have loved to have seen you hit the Titleist TS3 with a Titleist ball versus the TaylorMade ball since the announcers on TV were talking about Ricky sporting much more distance with TM.
So which driver are you putting in the bag Rick?? nice test, wonder if the ball made any difference? maybe do 5 with the same clubs using each others ball brand as well?
*Q.) What golf ball do you play and WHY?*
Rick Shiels Golf I loved the tp5 previous version can u do a review on the new one
Play the Wilson duo, I have tried multiple brands and the Wilson provides me with confidence and consistency.
I’ve tried most of them and found the SNELL MTB Black and the Vice pro+ work and feel best for me.
Currently using Pro V1 because of the soft feel around the greens, thinking of a switch to TM TPX5 going into summer
ProV1 because I got fitted
5 yards among the three? So in other words, none of this really makes a difference. They’re all good, and they’re all massively too expensive.
Very true on both accounts
Agree. Rick is a pro. So, what difference does it make for an amateur? Not much, I guess...
It's the exact opposite. The clubs aren't allowed to be better than the regulations allow. Having Rick test them shows how close to regulation they are. That's why I find these reviews pointless. There's never much difference when pros hit the sweet spot on every club.
And all of them gets sniped by Cobra F9 :D
Fun idea, please add Mizuno, their ball and new 190!

Always man warming up with the brand you don’t like 🤦🏻♂️
Geovanny Matias it’s also because if he hits a dodgy one with the Taylormade one the head might fly off or the shaft might snap, that’s just from personal experience and my mates personal experience, no bias involved.
I bet Rick won't like this
👍
Hilarious
I bet @@RickShielsPGA won't send me that M5 sample to have a go on....
Rick, I will say that I love your reviews and your opinion is the one I give the most clout to.
do a giveaway i need a new set of irons
I would have loved to see some more comparisons i.e. the total shot average comparison, or even the 5 worst shot comparison and even the best shot comparison. Could you post the complete shot data in the description for us?. Amazing that the M5 was the lowest club speed and ball speed and yet had more distance.
I bet rick won’t pin this
You are right 🤣
I bet rick can reach the pin :D
Rick Shiels Golf i love u and u inspire me
Awesome vid rick! Your the first i think to test the newest driver with manufacturers most premeium ball! That was brilliant.
Great video Rick! I’d love to see the Cobra F9 Speedback with each of the three balls to see those results.
Do this test again but hit each driver with each ball to see which ball is best for each driver
I like the new format where you list "Rick's Specs" before hitting each driver giving us the loft and hosel settings.
Great video! These are all waaaay out of my budget. A series of videos on the best second hand clubs for those on a tight budget would be awesome.
What was the difference with Ball Flights/Shapes? On the traces we saw, Callaway and Taylormade were hook shaped whilst the Titleist was fade shaped
That's a great comparison. Impressed with the Taylor made. M3 test with the ball could be interesting.
Enjoyed this a lot. Just got an M6 yesterday. The Boomstick👊
It was because of the spin being lowest with the TM combo! I’d take the Titleist because it was the STRAIGHTEST/longest
I use tp5X and callaway rouge 9° n-1 setting, hit over 330 at least 3 for each game. Average drive 290, love this combination
Good test all pretty close, I don't know if you mix the Balls up if it would make a difference.
Thx Wayne S
I would think that clubs and balls are designed to work together. However, since 90% ish of balls used on tour are the ProV1, it would be wise to make sure driver designs work with that ball. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday. Myself, I still rock the M1. Its a cannon. I use the ProV1.
I use Snell golf balls because they are reasonably priced balls with good performance.. I've said in the past to do a comparative with balls like Vice, Snell, Cut to see how they perform.
Rick, could you do the same test but this time hit all three balls with all three drivers? It would be interesting to see the longest possible combo!
It would be nice to see how the Cobra F-9 compares with each ball. I really enjoyed this comparison.
Rick, I wish you would have used the same brand ball with all the drivers. How do we know it was the ball that gave you the better distance and not the club?
The whole point of the test was the BRAND not the CLUB
Would be interested in seeing what your results are when changing ball/driver combinations
Best golf content on RUclips, hands down!
Thanks so much Eli! 👍
Would be interest to see brands mixed up, ts3 and tp5x as an example
Have a taylormade 2016 M2(the goat).. having a hard time letting it go but these new drivers are very enticing. Is it a better idea to take my current driver and see if a fitter can fit me out of it? Or just buy a driver that I like and test on my own? It seems that all of these new drivers from top brands are all very similar in distance and forgiveness, I wonder if during a fitting I’m maybe a little nervous and could skew the results. Thanks for the great videos/podcasts, keep it going!
I’d like to see them up against the Mizuno 2019 driver and RB Tour ball.
Would love to see a video of your opinion an area a company can improve on like cobra breaking into the putter market or ball market
