very cool video. helpful. the best bargains are found when you go hunting thru the woods to find your lost ball, find 6 more. but now I know which balls to look for when mine goes screaming down into the gulch.

This is why i haven't bought balls in over 25 years. Soft cover balls i find go in the bag. Done deal. :) Also your video on stop flipping the club may have saved me, Hit balls yesterday and i was amazed. Playing today and see if i got it ? :)

Been playing the Snell balls since they first came out and find them to be equivalent to the ProVs, etc for a lot less money. The new MTB Black is terrific and you can't beat the personalized thank you from Dean when you order them. Still appreciate the other balls but why pay more? Good review.

My two favorite balls are Titleist DT Tru Soft and the Srixon Soft feel. I'm 58 and my drives on average are around 250 yards.

Hi Clay, your bottom line is pretty clear; Get the best performing golf ball at the best price. I absolutely agree, the Snell golf balls perform as well as any other high end golf ball, and the only reason pros aren't using it is because they are not being paid by Dean Snell to play them. After trying a few sleeves this year, I will be playing the Snell MTB black next season.

Been playing Bridgestone for yrs. Now the new B330XS. 7 hndcp at my home course of approx 7000 yrds. . Just ordered 2 dozen of the Snell Black. Cant wait until the snow is gone to compare them. Great explanation on golf ball info.

I enjoyed this video about golf balls however, one ball that I've never liked and is cheaper, is the Top Flight XL. It sounds and feels like hitting a rock off the clubface. I seem to never get any feel with the ball and just don't like them at all. I noticed the Top Flight was not in your list of balls. Why?

The Snell golf balls are cheaper than the ProVs but it's still quite expensive in Canada. I used the Callaway SuperSoft and it's long, soft and it does bite on the green. Not as good bite as the ProVs but close enough.
I bought 5 dozen Snell MTB Black balls for $27.50/doz.
I like them. A lot.
At least as good as ProV1s at my level of golf. Half the cost.

Great video with incredible information. I learned a great deal and it makes me reconsider the ball in play. I must admit I have fallen for some of the marketing hype before about low compression great distance junk just to find out they dont go any further than any other ball. I am completely with you on finding a ball that feels good around the greens to you because that is where the advantage of a ball will make a difference. Thanks to this video I understand a lot better what to look for.

Two comments: 1. I play Srixon Q-star. Good ball for a good price and since I’m not a pro I get good and predictable performance near the greens with these. Highly recommend for a mid handicap golfer. 2. The fluid spine thing: I agree with that, for me the difficult is maintaining the angle in the backswing because I feel it requires some lower body work. Thanks for this explanation!

Great video . I actually use the a soft compression ball just cause I like way it feels especially when putting. I dont spin my chips shots either so high spin isnt a big deal for me

I've been playing Snell MTB's for a while now. They are great balls. I let my friends try them and they say the same. The distance and feel are the same as when I played the more expensive Titleist balls.

I did a test a while back between Pinnacle Gold and a few premium balls. I saw way more than a yard difference in distance. I may have been from "roll" opposed to "carry". After discovering this I thought about the human factor especially when comes to the price of the balls. I was probably wailing away at the "Pinnacle Gold" because I didn't really care but when I hit a Pro V1x I'm trying to keep it the fairway. LOL

This is a great description of the ball debate and understanding. As my game improved, I wanted to see stopping power power. The higher spin on the urethane covered ball does make a difference. By the way, as the game improves you lose less golf balls also, so buying the higher performing ball is okay when they stay in your bag longer. Still, the price points are too high and I'd rather put that money toward greens fees. I tried Snell, Vice and landed with Cut Golf. The Blue and Grey are considered tour level balls. The blue landed on the Golf Digest hotlist and spin chart with a gold award. I now play the Cut Blue for $20 bucks a dozen. Unless they change, I will not. The price point is too attractive for what I've seen on the course. Thanks for the review. Great stuff as always Clay.

Occasionally we have to wait for the Snell balls to arrive in Oz. I watched a TXG video that tested the Inesis 900 Tour ball and it seemed to perform as well as the premium balls and at a similar price range as the Snell

The reason most golf balls have similar distances off the driver is that the USGA has set limits on the velocity golf balls are allowed to have to qualify for tour use.

Everyone talks about Snell, Vice, and Kirkland, but I believe Cut Blue and MG C4 are the best for the money. Around $20/dozen and they are every bit as good as the Pro V line including the durability. In my own testing, I've gotten the Cut Blue to spin back more consistently on wedge shots than any of the others, so that's probably going to be my gamer going forward.

In my experience, the Cut Blues do not spin nearly as much as the Snell MTB. They are more in the mid-spin range, similar to the Vice Pro line. Haven't tried the MG C4.
I play with project s golf balls I'm a scratch player and honestly, if u get project a it will spin A TON. I recommend getting them if you are an amateur like me get project A or a snell

Great video, but one question. Can you explain dimple patterns and amount of dimples. I remember back in the day that Slazenger had a ball with 490+ dimples that with forever and a day it seemed.

Hi, higher spinning balls have dimples a little deeper, to help keep the flight down. For lower spinning balls, the dimples are typically a bit shallower to help the ball fly higher and stay in the air. The dimples work to break the air around the ball in flight, and have two key characteristics that are measured: Lift and Drag. The ideal dimple design is a combination balancing the lift and drag of the ball. They vary the diameters, shapes, total coverage, edge angles to control these two key variables. If you get the dimples wrong, you can be substantially short in distance and that is for sure not preferred! Most all golf balls run between 300 and 400 dimples.. The number is not the important factor. The size, shape, depth, edge angles get the proper flight and trajectory for the ball based on the spin rates of the balls. Example, PROV1 has 352, for a long time Titliest had a 332 pattern, a 392 pattern, and TaylorMade uses 322 dimples on one ball and 360 dimples on another, so all of them are in the same range. Clay, I know this is an older video, but if you see this, I am an 11 handicap, trying to get in the single digits. I am deciding between AVX and Chromesoft X with Triple Track (love it for putting). Do you have any thoughts on those two balls? With being an 11, will I see much difference in the ball? Or does it not really matter until you're getting closer to a consistent 70's golfer?

My experience is pretty much in line with what you have stated. The differences I am a older, moderate swing speed (85 to 95 with the driver) golfer.
What I have found is the low compression balls do not go as far with the driver as far as a regular premium ball. The older distance balls such as top-flite and pinnacle among others.
Golfers assume because they have slow swing speed’s are better off using a cheaper distance ball. As you pointed out distance is about the same among all the balls.
A shorter hitter even more than the long hitter needs a better ball.
A long long hitter is maybe hitting a pitching wedge into a green often I am hitting a 7-iron.Due to the angle of flight and spin rate variation who needs the more spinning ball? I do not the long hitter
The biggest difference for myself was with putting. The hard balls I just cannot putt with as the clicking sound they make screws up my feel
The same is true with the low compression balls the feel while different then the premium balls I find inconsistent most of the time I hate them too long or not hard enough. They too have a clicky sound it is just not as pronounced.
I live in Texas and if anything in the winter the variation between the Fairway and the green can be even more pronounced so I always play the premium ball

One ball I didn't see here was the Taylormade project (a), which IMO is better than a Pro V. I also agree the Snell and Vice (also not listed) balls are fantastic balls. Best budget ball I've ever used was the Bridgestone E6.
I would also like to point out though that 90% of amateur golfers wont benefit from a better or more expensive ball anyway. 99% of the people I see every weekend should just use a Nike Mojo. Unless you're under a 10 handicap, which only like under 10% of amateurs are, you have no business spending over a $1.00 a ball.

Both the Project (a) and the Vice Pro Plus were on the wedge spin charts in the mid-range area. Not the same spin as the higher quality urethane covered balls. They are decent balls for the price.

Great explanation, thanks. Quick question on winter golf, I switch to a softer core to allow the ball to compress more (I switched from chrome soft to super soft). It certainly felt better off the club face and appeared to give me back some of the lost distance. Any views? Thanks.
Hi Tony, It's really not going to make much of a difference. I would just stick with whatever you normally play and try to keep the ball as warm as you can. A cold golf ball makes a much bigger difference than the compression rating. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Extensive testing was done with MyGolf Spy with the Prov1 vs the Vice Pro Plus and the SW results alone showed that the Vice was closer than the Titliest. This is the first video you’ve done Clay which makes me think that you’re being sponsored by Snell and Titliest.

I play in the cold in South Carolina in the winter. I am aware of the problem with the balls getting harder. Should I buy a ball that is softer even in the cold? Which one would that be?

excellent video, here's my two cents' worth: i play the Bridgestone E6, and while I don't notice a difference on driver, i DO notice a difference on mid-irons. Maybe it's just me, but i'm consistently 5-10 yards shorter with the premium balls compared to my E6 (i'm a single-digit handicapper, and i'm fine with the mid-range balls because I have a hard time predicting when the premium balls will bite or just spin ridiculously from 150 yards out). I'd really like to see some tests done with the mid to short irons with the different balls because these are really the scoring clubs.
On a side note, what I do in the wintertime is get one of those handwarmers in my pocket with 3 golf balls. I change out on each hole. It definitely helps.

Tom Watson in his book "Getting Up and Down" adovacated playing the short game with as little spin as possible. After all, it's only "predictable" on the surfaces with the same firmness and granularity. We tend to remember shots when backspin works and forget when it doesn't and causes problems. No wonder Tom Watson won 5 British Opens.
I quite like the feel and feedback of the "cheap" soft balls currently out there. I've often thought backspin was as much an enemy as a useful tool, especially watching pros suck back off greens into water like at Augusta or at US Open's. Many modern pros have one-dimensional technique which is why they fail on such courses and in such conditions. They are too used to playing golf like a game of darts.
Greg Norman's shots often screwed the entire length of the green! Is that really something to go after? I think not.
Hi, in many situations around the green you don't want spin such as for chip shots that you want to get rolling toward the hole. You can't really play pitch shots like that though. The spin is much more predictable then a chip type shot from 50 yards out. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

I’m assuming the robot is perfect at center hits and full compression. Another thing to consider is that lower compression balls are friendlier to off center hits, at least feel wise

Great information! I use Snell MTB-X because to me they basically act just like a Pro V1X and are about $20 cheaper per dozen, your video confirms why this is. Quick question though:
What's your thoughts on used golf balls? I recently bought 98 used Snells for super cheap, so cheap I couldn't pass it up (was free shipping and it worked out to about $10/dozen for a mix of MTB-X and MTB-Blacks). Undoubtedly I believe a lot of these will be lake balls because that's where the money's at for these used golf ball sellers, but do you think there's a real difference in performance between used (likely lake) golf balls that are still in really good shape vs brand new? I have a hard time telling a difference, but I'm not very good at golf so it's hard for me to detect these kind of differences.

At Embry-Riddle Aerodynamic's class, first thing we studied was a golf ball. It can do all the same things. it has thrust (driver) lift (angle of club/dimples) drag, and gravity. The shots you see the pro's make with a driver look like cannon shots. They go look like an arc. Like he just said little spin. The dimples on the rubber wound balls, were designed to grab the air, via spin rate, create a lower PSI which would cause the ball to "climb". As drag increased, and gravity would take over the ball would start to fall. Back in the day when you hit the drive it looked like it went out, then you'd watch it go up hang there, then fall. But hitting a straight shot is the hardest thing in golf. Just like in Ping Pong, Outside in, will slice, inside out draw/hook. With the higher club head speeds if you were using these older balls the hooks and slices were exaggerated. So you want to hit a longer drive with the new golf balls??? find a driver that has groves in it.

I have a theory. If the grooves on club face connecting the ball at angle (smooth ball with dimples) spin is produced. If ball is coarse and not smooth, wouldn't more spin be achieved. I don't have the equipment to test this theory though. If you wish? you can do it, just be so kind and give me feedback please. The ball should be sanded with sandpaper. Such a ball connecting grooved clubface will produce even more spin. Distance will be compromised but that's relative on par3's. I don't have equipment to do such test. You welcome to do it. Just be so kind and give me feedback.
Hi MJ, you don't necessarily always want more spin. You want to be able to control the spin. Less spin makes the ball go further but you want enough spin with shorter shots to be able to make the ball stop. If you took the dimples off the ball then there would be too much spin. Making the ball surface more coarse would also increase spin due to friction on the face. A ball without dimples would go about half as far and be much more difficult to control. Play well! I used to hit the pinnacle straight distance. It was a little heavier, and had a slick cover. The spin lowers your distance. So you will pick up distance with a very slick ball. And weight is a big deal if you can swing your club with a lot of speed.
Theres a reason the long drive contests use hard, slippery balls. And smooth club head faces.

I ask because if price is not that much of a factor, they are fairly inexpensive online. *Those that think this is a Snell advertisement have missed the whole point of the video. Great video. One question I would have is how about dimple patterns. I notice a difference in distance and I have often wondered since balls are so close what effect do the massively different dimple patterns make?

Always found this to be true in practice. I've got a bag of decent practice balls that I'll go hit in a field fairly often, some of them top-line and a lot of them more mid-line, a few from the $25-and-under list, and there's pretty much zero difference in height and distance on a 6-iron or wedge hit the same way on the face.
Same with on-course practice, with the possible exception of a marginal difference in total distance off the driver sometimes, although I'd say it's more than a yard or two with some balls, but maybe that's only at a scratch-or-better level (I've been as low as plus-2 as an amateur and a little better than that as a pro, and was probably top third or even top quartile in length among good players, disregarding all long-drive gorillas).
When I was playing competitively and the ProV1x came out, I tried it. My experience testing it under various conditions was that there's no doubt it was a little longer off the tee (I'd say an average of seven or eight yards), maybe up to half a club with irons (usually less), but it was so terrible on feel around the greens (IMHO) it wasn't nearly worth it for the difference between hitting 6 and 7 from the fairway. There's just no appreciable difference in scoring potential when we're talking about just a one-club difference, and not that much even with two clubs. Much more important to have something you like around the greens and that fits your feel (part of which is sound) with the kinds of shots you hit.
Also, I've certainly knocked around with lower-priced practice balls just for the fun of it when the course was empty, and there's almost no difference at all in performance other than, as you say, in the ability to hit certain kinds of shots in the short game and with short irons. If it's a super-cheap ball that doesn't spin, there are certain difficult situations -- downwind, hard greens, etc. -- where you're going to have trouble trying to stop it.
But in general, amateurs tie themselves in knots over this stuff in the same way they'll absolutely ruin their games and swings over being able to hit a 5-iron instead of a 4 or a 3 from a specific distance, like it matters what number is stamped on the club you need to cover certain distance reliably. It's just strange. But it's also profitable for the manufacturers, I guess.
As for Snell, I tried a couple of their lines (I think they had only two at the time), and I agree there's essentially no difference in playability between them and the big names. In fact, I haven't met anybody yet who wouldn't tell you the same.
And in cold weather, of course you're right. Good players who grew up in places where they play in the 40s for two or three months (or more) out of the year have always gone low-compression in the winter. As for keeping them warm, I haven't ever found that the "warm" lasts anywhere close to nine holes, and anyway, you have to gauge the drop in distance as the ball loses its heat, whether it's two holes or nine. I _have_ found a difference in going to low-compression balls once the temperature gets much below 60-65.

The way the ball spin and feel really makes the biggest difference. I know Titleist Pro V1 now start to bubble around the 'Titleist' name after about 6 mos/year. A ploy no doubt to get you to buy more! This never happened with the older balls!
