I remember my dad getting the Great Big Bertha in 97, and as an 11 year old I thought it was the height of golf technology. I still remember playing with him that summer and just feeling like I was crushing it for miles.
I sold mine with a bag of 1960s Acushnet irons for $50. Now wish I kept it..lol I still have the 2 ball putter though. Never felt the need to change it.
The great big bertha war bird is so iconic. I remember seeing that club when I was in a pro shop at 7 years old. I thought it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. The sound it makes when you have a good strike is so pure.
I still use a GBB. It's my dad's driver that I kinda stole when I started playing because he had 2 drivers and I preferred the Big Bertha to the John Daly Extreme that he likes. So I threw the Big Bertha in my bag
And I'm the one guy that couldn't find one with a shaft that fit. Club always produced too much backspin. Crushed drive on a fast course would roll out like a full gap wedge. Could not miss a fairway but it was 30 yds short of my Macgregor.
I never had the odyssey two ball. Back in the early 2000's when it was new, I tried it out and i gotta say it felt phenomenal. Not many putters have the feel that this one has. But I couldn't hole anything with it and frankly the price was outrageous. Especially for a putter that I couldn't aim with. Now, quite possibly, the main problem in this equation was me, but we all have our preferences and I've always liked blade style putters better.
I’ve just got into the game of golf and I pretty much have a full bag of Callaway Big Berthas. I even have the driver with the original headcover. These have been passed down to me by my dad and I love them.
Nice video. Without question one of the best things I've ever done for my golf game is getting properly fitted for some Ping irons. I'm a white-dot and I have the G20 irons. That fixed my nasty slice with a quickness and made golf *a lot* more fun. Yes, you have to spend a bit of money for the whole set, but it was worth every penny to me.
I still use the 1 iron made for me when the Tom Morris shop in St. Andrews still made clubs-----it is a "Pro Flite" with stiff steel shaft and I could hit it all day long 250 yards, "quail high" (Not as far today, I'm sad to say!!). I bought it in 1964 and it remains in fantastic condition.
Ah memories, I used to go in that shop nearly every week when I lived there in the 70's. I used to help Eric Auchterlonie build hickory shafted putters, nice man !
thanks for the trip down memory lane, Rick. i still have that same driver you were hitting. was even able to hit that off-the-deck occasionally. great, great club!!
I'm one of the few, I got a RBZ non adjustable that's my newest club. 15 year old cobra king 3-Sw ssi set. Adam's golf 56 degree and Adam's putter of some sort. Still out preform most of my friends and shoot low 80s. 70-90% of your game is on you, not the clubs!
Titleist 975 F series was one of my favorite FM's. I could work it both ways, rely on it, and if I did my part it was extremely consistent. Had one in 15.5 and one in 20.5 with a Graffaloy 35S. The maroon shaft. Great club.
I started playing again a few years ago after twenty years and was using a very old set of clubs my stepfather had given me when I came across a full set of pxg clubs with an Odyssey putter in it at a thrift store. I love that putter and I am still using it. I payed about 3 dollars for it but I wouldn't sell it for a hundred. It significantly improved my putting.
MMRBOOSTING give it a try, I’ve been playing for about a year now and I’m in love with the game, especially since my knee is garbage at the age of 25 and I can finally compete in a sport again
My odyssey 2 ball was the first club I ever purchased! I LOVE my putter. Was fortunate enough to be given the rest of my set… For the record, I’ve only been playing since August last year and your videos have helped me get much better faster!! Thank you
Ping eye 2 beryllium copper irons. Some of the best irons ever made. They were so far ahead they of their time and still contend with irons being released today
2:40 “how many of you owned one of these” - I’ve never even played gold let alone owned clubs, but I’ve somehow watched about 15 of your vids in 12 hours 😂 might be a time to start 🤷♂️
Yeah, man! I just started and getting a set of my own clubs on Thursday. Definitely a great time. Hopefully you started seeing this comment is a year old haha
Just found your channel and what a walk down memory lane. I still hit my ping eye irons, fitted of course, and the warbird driver in 7.5 loft and TaylorMade burner plus 3 wood. Different shaft in driver as I have a proforce gold 55 in a low torque stiff flex. New subscriber!
I still have my Callaway 8° Great Big Bertha War Bird driver from the late 90s. I no longer use it, but I used to bomb it. The best drive I can remember hitting with it was green high on a 370 yard par 4. I'm 56 now and can no longer generate that kind of clubhead speed, but it would be interesting to pull it out and see how it fares today.
I keep a Ruger Titanium GBB Warbird 11 degree in my bag for certain circumstances. My jaw dropped when you said its from 1997, A) because it's such a good club for its age, and B) I was born in 1997....
I started golfing just last year. After showing interest in the sport, my dad gave me his old set of clubs to get started. The Callaway War Bird GBB Driver is the first driver I ever owned, and honestly, I love it.
I have a new respect for the GBB War Bird that's been in my golf bag since high school (16 years ago.) I don't get to play very much; it's mostly been in storage the whole time, but I've always curled my lip at that club. I will swing it with a smile from now on knowing it's an icon.
@@gregmitchell2435 Ok, so mine is not exactly the same one he's using. And looking at it again, the one he's swinging looks like a way larger head. Mine's just a regular Big Bertha... but is a "War Bird" model (stamped right under "Big Bertha") in 10 degree. Not the same club-- guess this really is just a piece of junk then! 😂
Great video Rick! I actually still have this driver, I still use it as well. 8° GBB Warbird 35" firm flex original shaft. I drive this 300 on the regular.
Yea the RBZ 3 wood is one of my favorites. Love the face of it as opposed to the current 3 woods which basically have no hitting surface and make odd ground contact. Bought another at Play It Again as a back up.
Were you loaded? I had to make do with Wilson Staff (which were really cheap clubs then) when I first started, I got gifted a War Bird when my Grandad stopped playing golf.
I still play with the clubs I played with during the 2000's. I have a Guerin Rife 2 bar putter. Titleist spin milled vokey wedges. Ping Eye 2 irons and Ping Eye 3 woods. The only newer club I have is my driver which is a Taylor Made R11s. I have had many of the newer clubs but I always went back to my old trusties.
Yeah I still have the Driver, used it today. Im not comparing myself but I was hitting mine around 275-80. I've tested new clubs but can't bring myself to spend hundreds for about 10-12 more yards. Some things are classic because they just work.
In my current bag, I carry the Great Big Bertha Warbird, Taylormade Burner bubble stiff shaft irons, and that very Taylormade Rescue club! Never had the heart to change them out... thanks for this video although it dates me. I remember buying my Warbird as if it was yesterday.
My favorite Old Club I still keep in my bad is the Ping Eye 2 Sand Wedge (Black). It's the only club in my bag that when it's in my hand I know I'm going to hit a decent shot at worst. Of course practicing with it on the beach after surfing may have helped my comfort with it.. LOL
Randy!!! We are waiting for a video bro!! I check 2 or 3 times a day to see if you uploaded yet. I know Iknow...turn on notifications. I will next vid you post! Cheers!
I absolutely despise golf videos. And yet, I can watch Rick's all day. I like his style. Seems as if he is a friend talking before or after a round of golf. Thanks for your efforts, Rick.
I remember begging my dad to buy me the RBZ at the driving range years ago when I was like 13 years old... An absolute bombshell! Sadly he never bought me it :(
Thanks Rick ,I got some enjoyment ,on that ,I still use that exact driver,my three wood as an sRixon14.5 with a bigger head ,my irons are ping eye,mk ones, and my putter is ping,,,,my carry bag is ping ,,,love the game, real healthy for a person
The big Bertha takes me back to a primary school aged child at holiday golf clinics, I was younger and smaller than everyone else, but hit that big Bertha further than anyone! Only issue with Callaway is Ive had the head snap off 3 seperate drivers. Also a shout out to the bubble shaft Taylor mades
I remember my grandparents got me a pair of left handed golden bear golf clubs for my 8th birthday present. I was right handed but they thought I was left. Played 2 years left handed then swapped to right. When I swapped to right my grandad bought me a new odyssey two ball putter. Didn’t think much of it back then but I wish I still had it now days. I’m 23 and getting back into golf. About to spend a decent amount on new irons. Love watching your videos Rick! The new and the old !
I would love if golfbidder would offer some second hand beginner sets / halfsets on their homepage. I mean ... if you and Peter would promote it... :) btw, nice video :P
I have that driver in my bag right now! It was my grandfather's. I keep saying I need to retire it and buy a modern driver, but the sound and feel when you really rip one with it is so satisfying...plus it reminds me of golfing with Papa Jerry.
I inherited a GBB from my uncle with a graphite shaft. I set it aside after he passed, but kept it around. On a lark I took it out to the range to see if it had any life left in it. Son of Gun it went long, straight and consistent as ever! It is a credit to Callaway and their designers!
@@gabehurst8604 if you can afford it or can find a set that were fitted for your height then go for some Ping irons without doubt - I'm 6'4 and have Ping i3+ irons custom fitted white colour code and they are the best thing I ever used. I believe mine are an extra inch longer but your best bet is going down to your local Ping dealer and seeing what they'd fit you with and going from there.
CarbonitePlays I’ve got regular set of the taylor made rocket bladez and only on the pitching wedge and sand wedge do i have some trouble with length, my drivers and woods on the other hand i think the length might affect my slice a little because i hit every other club atraight, any ideas?
I still have and use, at times, an Odyssey White Hot 2 ball putter...LOVE IT! My first Driver was the GBB Warbird...one of the best pieces of equipment EVER. Revolutionary in its day! Great memories
Thanks to Rick's videos, I decided to spend some Christmas money on my very own Taylormade RBZ. I got it in a 5 wood, exactly what I wanted to replace, and am very excited to give it a try :)
The RBZ line is what I started with and I still own the irons and a 5 wood. Love the line and imo the RBZ 1st Gen is the best Driver and fairways TM has ever made.
I still use my 20 plus year old Callaway Big Bertha 3 wood warbird sole plate to this day. Good distance and accurate. Bought a brand new Epic Max last year to replace it but hated it and went back to the Big Bertha
Still have my Two ball. Love it. Always have been a huge Callaway lover. Slightly bias cause my mother worked for them for quite some years during the golf boom. Yes i benefitted immensely. New clubs every year if i wanted.
I had the 3 wood in the bag until about 3 years ago when the whole set was stolen. It sat next to a Taylormade M1 driver, 714MB Irons, Vokeys and a Del Mar. It looked so out of place but it did more than hold its own. Great club
I had the Big Bertha Warbird driver! 10* with the original RCH 90 shaft. Absolutely loved that driver! Until about 6 years ago when the head broke off from the hosel. Had to upgrade to the big headed driver. I still play the original Big Bertha Warbird 3 Wood and 5 Wood with the same RCH 90 shafts.
I still have a Callaway Great Big Bertha War Bird with 9 degrees of loft and it's a great club to hit - especially when you really catch it sweetly! I prefer my Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead though with 10 degree loft just because of the beautiful sound it makes when you connect with it...absolutely one of the best sounds a golfer can hear!
Compared to Rick and every other golfer on the course, my bag looks like a museum display. I'm playing a 2004 Taylormade R5 Dual TP driver and matching 3-wood; two 2008 Taylormade Dual Rescues (3H and 4H); a set of 1996 Ping BeCu ISI irons (5I-PW); Three 2008 Cleveland BRZ 900 Tour Action wedges; and a circa 2000 Ping B60 Isopur putter. The only thing new in my 2011 Ogio Edge stand bag are my Titleist AVX golf balls (and last year's Nikon Coolshot 40i rangefinder.)
I've used some classic drivers over the years: the original Callaway Big Bertha; Ping TiSI 300cc driver; Titelist 975D and Taylor Made 300. Amazing clubs all but that Ping was by far the sweetest feeling club I have ever used.
This feels like a video about my current clubs…looked in goodwill for 6 months and eventually got a bag of callaway big berthas 3-P, 3&5W, Cleveland wedges and a 2 ball white steel putter. I’m just happy to finally be able to learn golf!
I had a 2 ball for awhile. I loved the way it lined up but could never get used to the way it felt. I (well my dad bought it but I inherited it) still have that Great Big Bertha in the basement. I'm picking up a new driver tomorrow and I'm going to take them both to Top Tracer immediately after.
What do you think is the *best* club ever made?
Callawaaaaaayyyy all the waaaayyyyy
Rick Shiels Golf , got to be the taylormade m1 , first with adjustability , made golf a different game and brought people into customs fit
Rick Shiels Golf TaylorMade burner 2.0 driver is the best.
My favorite club I’ve ever put in the bag is my Titleist 913 Hybrid
Big bertha for sure. Everyone wanted it. You’re forgetting the old balata balls too
I remember my dad getting the Great Big Bertha in 97, and as an 11 year old I thought it was the height of golf technology. I still remember playing with him that summer and just feeling like I was crushing it for miles.
when the guys at our club started getting them one remarked he was hitting is so much further and said 'it's almost like cheating' :)
I still have that callaway driver. It was my father's last gift to me.
I sold mine with a bag of 1960s Acushnet irons for $50. Now wish I kept it..lol I still have the 2 ball putter though. Never felt the need to change it.
Sorry about your father
I play with my mother’s clubs (1990’s Callaways). Helps me stay connected to her.
Bryan Jeon I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️
I still got my grandpas biggest big Bertha from 1997. Mint condition. A shame im left handed
The great big bertha war bird is so iconic. I remember seeing that club when I was in a pro shop at 7 years old. I thought it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. The sound it makes when you have a good strike is so pure.

I had a 7 degree Wardbird. So cool and so hard to hit
it's not a war bird.. only the 1998 version was called the war bird for its steel sole plate.. the one in the video is the GREAT big bertha "titanium"
Started playing in 97 aged 12. That Big Bertha was everywhere
And I'm the one guy that couldn't find one with a shaft that fit. Club always produced too much backspin. Crushed drive on a fast course would roll out like a full gap wedge. Could not miss a fairway but it was 30 yds short of my Macgregor.
I still use a big bertha I bought used off ebay in 2008. Everyone give me shit till my drive is the longest 50% of the time. Lol
Your videographer is doing an amazing job. That zoom in on the rescue clubhead after the fairway shot was beautiful.
I never had the odyssey two ball. Back in the early 2000's when it was new, I tried it out and i gotta say it felt phenomenal. Not many putters have the feel that this one has. I think the Ping Eye 2 irons would be worthy as a stand alone iron set that propelled equipment forward.
Michael Sherman agree 100%. They changed golf a lot for weekend golfers. Plus, didn’t they have square grooves? Caused havoc with rules of golf?
Good shout Michael!
My first full set of irons were ping eye 2 I still love them to this day and take them out every once in a while
I'm 26 years old and Ping Eye 2 irons were my first adult set of irons. Very sentimental.
Driver - TM R7
Wood - TM RBZ

Irons - Ping i2 or g2
Wedge - Cleveland tour actions

You need to start playing Joe!
Rick Shiels Golf I want to, but it’s just about finding the time and money!
Get a 7 iron and have fun at the driving range
Don't spend a fortune at the start like the most of us 🤣
Maybe Golfbidder could kit Joe out and Rick could give you some starter lessons...
tomkrigby That would be amazing! I’m from the U.K. and I don’t start my third year of university until September so I’ve got nothing but time.
Bubble shafts, 2 balls and Big Berthas. A lot of nostalgia here.

My Big Bertha Warbird still joins me on the links every time I play! Fantastic, reliable club - when I use it correctly, that is.
Good to hear 👌

I found “the biggest big Bertha” at a pawn shop last year. Had to buy it!!
My grandpa gave me one of those lol
Thanks Rick ,I got some enjoyment ,on that ,I still use that exact driver,my three wood as an sRixon14.5 with a bigger head ,my irons are ping eye,mk ones, and my putter is ping,,,,my carry bag is ping ,,,love the game, real healthy for a person
12:23 - My current driver
Still in my backup bag. I used to call it Sparky- it used to throw sparks when I grazed dry grass on my drive.
I have one but fuck that
Same
Mine too. Just got it off eBay. I can’t figure out a 460 head so I went with the 195 9 degree one as I can hit my 5 wood pretty good
Hoping the wedge would have been Cleveland’s beryllium copper from the late 90’s
I had a full set of those wedges
That was my guess as well, being the guy that made those wedges is also the guy that help Phil create the grind series
I actually own the 3, 5, and 7 wood set of the Callaway War Bird “series”
That was my dream driver when I started golf!! And that’s still my putter 😂
I love my 2 ball! Got it from play it again sports for 20 bucks. Still has the headcover too.
Adams tight lies 3 wood. I think I’ve seen one in every golfers garage 😂
That was the last 3 wood I hit well
I would love if golfbidder would offer some second hand beginner sets / halfsets on their homepage. I mean ... if you and Peter would promote it... :)
btw, nice video :P
hkp try the website Sideline Swap
@@timothypineault thank you I will take a look at it
I have that driver in my bag right now!
Ping Eye 2 Oversize Blonde Persimmon Driver, Ben Hogan Beryllium Wedges #beardstrong
Should have used the iconic putters from mini golf. Been around forever..lol
I use the war bird. It is an absolutely fantastic club.
i have the Big Bertha titanium driver and i use it 😂😂
At 6'4", I can confirm, maroon is a giants golf club :)
ForsytheGaming ik 6’4 also what length clubs do you use i’m just getting back into the game and i’ve grown and have no idea how to size my clubs
I don't mean to brag but I still carry this in my bag.
Anything hits nice when you got a swing like you do lol
Thanks to Rick's videos, I decided to spend some Christmas money on my very own Taylormade RBZ. I got it in a 5 wood, exactly what I wanted to replace, and am very excited to give it a try :)
take a shot every time his says "iconic"
Why did you do this to me, my liver is rip
New clubs every year if i wanted.
yup i paid retail for a twoball in 03 when they came out . 200 bucks ! improved my putting
I had the 3 wood in the bag until about 3 years ago when the whole set was stolen. It sat next to a Taylormade M1 driver, 714MB Irons, Vokeys and a Del Mar. It looked so out of place but it did more than hold its own. Great club
That’s Rick
That brought back some old memories.
Would enjoy seeing you make more videos like this one.
I had one of those TM rescues - that brings back memories. I also carried a TM Tour Spoon for years - fancy name for a 3 wood. Good vid!
Got an Odyssey White Steel 2 ball Blade putter as a hand-me-down from a friend and I absolutely love it! Won't change that putter any time soon...
I still have a Callaway Great Big Bertha War Bird with 9 degrees of loft and it's a great club to hit - especially when you really catch it sweetly! I prefer my Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead though with 10 degree loft just because of the beautiful sound it makes when you connect with it...absolutely one of the best sounds a golfer can hear!
love the 2 ball putter, purchased it in 2003 and still in my bag - mine also has the alignment on top
Some great nostalgia here! I remember my Biggest Big Bertha when I was in high school in 2001. Absolutely loved that club!
I loved my titleist 975D driver and my Taylormade bubble driver, the foam filled head delivered an awesome solid feel
I've used some classic drivers over the years: the original Callaway Big Bertha; Ping TiSI 300cc driver; Titelist 975D and Taylor Made 300. Amazing clubs all but that Ping was by far the sweetest feeling club I have ever used.
My Odyssey 2 Ball is the best putter I've ever owned *By Far*. Love it!
