Anyhow the driver out shot 2 fellow soldiers pro drivers and they constantly play the game, one actually became irritated because he couldn’t believe it! lol I was just enjoying my accuracy on my landings, right where I locked my targeting with every swing lol My putting was dreadful lol

i bought these for myself last week, played a cheeky 9 hole yesterday and i am well impressed especially the driver .. the first shot was a little off the toe and went a little right but not much as the older clubs i was using as forgiveness is really good. i am now hitting the ball straighter than ever. The irons feel nice and weighty and forgiving as well. i cant wait to get back out on a longer course to try the hybrids
I think it’s important for package sets to have a clear upgrade path. As you progress your game, you’ll start with replacing the driver and hybrid, and the rest of the set will be more than adequate while you piecemeal a better set. That’s much better than the whole set being equally bad, so you feel like it’s not worth it unless you drop the wallet on a completely new set all at once.
I think the clear path to upgrades from a package set like this is getting a driver, then wedges, then woods, putter, and if you’ve made it that far it’s probably time to get fit for some good irons.
LOVE these reviews. I found a set of Ping i-3 O-Size at the thrift shop for $3 a club! 4-9 with a SW and gap wedge (U)! Lamkin grips still in good shape! Best deal of the year for this guy!
Just a reference point. A 1970 magazine had an ad for a McGregor golf set. Three woods and 8 irons for $99.95. Given inflation the Costco price holds up pretty well.
Loved the last drive. Rick wasn't showing us the difference between his Ping and set package set. He simply couldn't have 276 on the leader board he need one over 300 yards. Second on the table for the day 🙂 Love this guy
Rick is as good as it gets. I really appreciate how he connects to golfers on all levels. He may be wrong on some things but it is never because of dishonesty.
Great video. I currently have the Kirkland Wedges from Costco but I feel like its time to upgrade. I would LOVE a video where you explain bounce and grind, what they are used for, and how to selct the best wedge based on your game/playing conditions.
I like my Kirkland Wedges - the only wedges I've found I like better are my buddie's Vokeys and I just not ready to shell out that kind of cash for a wedge. They're hard to beat unless you have cash to burn.
Great video Rick as a new golfer myself package sets are perfect for what I’m trying to accomplish right now which is just get comfortable with golf so great vid pal keep it up 👍
Love your videos and just to suggest another group to make note of is golfers who have been playing with clubs handed down from older friends or family. I have been playing with my dad's old clubs for years and didn't upgrade because anything I could afford seemed to be a step back in quality....until a few of your videos convinced me to look into these sets. 6 months and $400 later and I've dropped 8 strokes off my normal and broke par back to back days for the first time. Cheers, keep up the quality reviews.
Im still using (and loving) my 2017 MacGregor package set, the irons more in particular. And I have no intention in changing them at all. Im a 17 hcp. Great video Rick!!
My first set of clubs was a wilson box set at a similar price and the driver was the first club to be replaced for me as well. Next was adding on some proper wedges, before I replaced the wood and hybrid. It really is a good way to start playing and figuring out if you want to keep playing and to learn a bit more about what you want and need from equipment you have no experience with and no idea what to look for. Once you learn a few things, the 2nd hand market is so much less overwhelming to use as well. The ammount of golf clubs you can find out there thats barely used is quite large if you know where to look and for what to look for. Also, as you replace things from the box set you end up having a spare set of clubs for someone who wants to start playing, someone who just want to go hit some balles and havent brought their set or whatever. My original box set has recruited atleast 2 other players the sport after I gave it away to a colleague
The weakness in those packaged sets is usually the shaft and not the clubhead, especially for the driver, so I was somewhat surprised you were able to hit that driver with the whippy shaft! Otherwise that looks like a really good buy for a starter set.
My first set of irons was Macgregor M85i. Very easy to hit with great distance. The best thing is once I accidentally broke the shaft of PW so I went to Golfsmith who owned the brand then. The sale rep asked if I snapped it intentionally and I said no. Then he said he was sorry that their product was mulfunctioned. So he went to the back of the store for may be 10 min and came back with new DG s200 shaft for free. This set served me fine for almost 10 years.
I bought a similar set and first thing I replaced was the driver but still use the 5 wood that came with it. I upgraded to used 2-pw titleist set and regripped them but that 5 wood stays in my bag. Only been playing for a few months and rather spend the $ on short game clubs since I'm really only using a driver once a hole was my thought process. Hope this helps a newer newbie out! Great video!
I wonder how far you could hit the driver, Rick, if you swapped out the shaft for your own (if that were even possible). It would be interesting to know how much distance is lost from the head design compared to the shaft.
My first set of new clubs was MacGregor Heritage Tour Cavity Backs (some 30 years ago). They were a decent beginner set. Years later (after replacing them) I cut down a half set for my wife. They are still sitting in the garage today.
I'd be really interested to see a comparison of a $250 full boxed set vs what you can get from globalgolf/2ndswing/golfbidder for the same price. What really is the best bang for the buck for a new golfer?
For a brand new golfer not knowing much about the eqipment, the 2nd hand market is kinda overwhelming. I know first hand as I tried it when I was new, but ended up just getting a box set. When it was time to make upgrades to the box set, I did use the 2nd hand market to replace my driver, wood and hybrid and also got an apex utility prototype for $20 from there a few years ago. The 2nd hand market I still pay attention to, cause you never know when something interesting pops up even though Im not currently in NEED of any equipment
I am going to be in the category of a returning golfer. Not played around for five or six years, never bothered with a handicap that I used to shoot between 90 to 100 in a round average. Once or twice got into the high 80s. This looks like a real ideal set for me
RICK I am so glad I subscribed, I've watched at least a half dozen videos from you and I must say I'm hooked! Your review of the Costco club set was the most genuinely honest review I've ever seen and a great way to get new players not only interested but also to give them a reasonably good set of clubs to start with, I wish you had been around when I started. Bravo Sir!!
I just wish he would have cut at least one of the clubs in half - like with the golf ball tests. I have actually wondered what the inside of a Driver really looks like - I imagine it is just a hollow cavity.
When I first started golfing in the 1990s I bought a McGregor set at The Sports Authority. Middle of the season the 5 iron folded in half, not the shaft, the head. Took it back to the store they gave me a brand new 5 iron. That one folded also. Also snapped a 3 wood at the hosel. My friend showed me how to make clubs from the Golfsmith catalog(they went out of business a few years back). Never broke another club.
Great review of yours 👍🏼 I’m not surprised by the driver distance, since you are putting a 10,5º stock package driver versus a fitted 9º Ping 😉 It would be interesting to face them in the same loft and flex of the shaft, at least 😊
I own a set of macgregor irons. Reverse Draft. Bought them second hand don’t know how old they are. But I find them absolutely marvellous. I’ve had them about 5 or 6 years. Changed the grips a few times. Great video.
As my first golf clubs set, I just bought two months ago a used (but like new) MacGregor set. Happy to see they could be not as bad as I imagined at first.
I started playing golf almost 35 years ago with Macgregor irons. Still have my original Golden Bear set as well as some others. I hope Macgregor continues to make irons!
Have you ever thought about using a cheaper ball when testing sets for newer players? Typically, a newer player wouldn't be using a Pro V1. That may affect your view of the clubs.
You aren't wrong, but since he normally plays with the V1s, keeping that ball eliminates a variable when testing these clubs. If he pairs this Costco set with some Pinnacle balls and the performance is lousy, is it the balls or is it the set?
rick its so good to see you test these clubs and give an honest opinion its also good to see that there are brands out there who are looking at entry golf and a good price, I still think you would favour the Calloway edge but for someone looking to begin playing these clubs offer fantastic value on the pocket
I own about 20 sets of irons (yes, I know I have a problem), from high end blades on down, and Wilson Staff Ci9's are still my favorite set. They aren't long, but if a beginner can get a set, I think they are perfect beginner sets.
Look as a parent of 2 children and uncle to further 6 who got into golf over Covid these sets are great. Once juniors hit 13-14 yrs they are to big for many junior sets. So beginners box sets fit the slot. Irons suit low swing speeds but work well. Graphites are fine for 80 mph. But even at 100 mph you just tip the shafts 1 inch. That sorts them. Hybrid just leave along being 0.37 inch is still good enough. Loft is easy to check anyway so hopefully 24 degree so a 5 hybrid. 5 iron can be a tough club at 14-16 to nail. Hybrid works better.
Oh I have them watching away, at every skill, in fairness many RUclips vids I point them too are your tuition videos Rick and team. The impact teaching method Rick shows are just spot on for juniors, not exceeding the point. It good to see the lift they get when they nail a shot.. Can be any shot or putt , it is when then plan it and it works out. I always echo back a key point once mentioned "if you can remember 3 good shots from a round" it has been a good round, enjoy it and wins will come..
Great review as always Rick. Just one about the driver though; you didn’t mention that part of the reason you can’t get as much distance out of it is because the huge flex in the shaft, which is of course there so that beginner golfers who have a much slower swing speed than you can at least get some speed into the club head. Absolutely no doubt the materials are lower quality as well, but newbies don’t be too put off by the lack of distance Rick can get out of it, it’s suitable for you (for now) :)
Well done once again Rick, great to see your loyal followers helping with content, after all if you give us what we want (most of the time) then why wouldn't we keep following you. Love your work
Just started golf and playing with my mates that have been playing for years. I've bought these clubs and they're more than I'll need for a wee while. Happy to have a full set in the bag other than wedges but more than adequate for my skill level.
Working at a golf course, I would love to see my boss get a few sets of these on the floor for sale. There are so many golfers who have no aspirations to justify two grand or more into their golf bag. This fits the bill and then some. Might even be great to replace a few of our rental sets getting a little long in the tooth. Thanks as always Rick!
We bought 2 sets of clubs from Walmart when we stayed at Southern Dunes club in Florida, as it was much cheaper than the charge the airlines wanted to charge to take our own clubs. We left them at the villa for the next holiday makers and we were well impressed at under $100 including bag.
I’ve not swung a club in 10 years. I had a set of Slazengers in my early 20’s and am looking to get back into golf. Saw these in Costco yesterday and after this review will definitely consider them. Looking to ask Father Christmas for some lessons too! Great review and cracking channel Rick
I broke the driver twice. The other clubs are fine. Grabbed a Srixon driver and a Sasquatch 3 wood and a new putter. Happy with my budget set for sure. Just don’t be surprised if you snap the driver swinging hard. They’ll replace it twice then you’re SOL
@@macman975 Except it's not a paid for advertisement, is it? As he explicitly says it isn't, and it would be breaking the law in several ways if in fact he was paid and didn't disclose it. For a RUclips content creator with the amount of subscribers he has, that would be extremely damaging if found to be explicitly lying in that regard. So to be clear, no it is not a paid for advertisement, it is a genuine review, and unless you have any evidence whatsoever to back up your claim (you don't), get off this comments section.
have you even watched his channel he has done numerous reviews of name brand clubs. Why if I may ask would he have to get paid to review Costco clubs. He was sponsored by Nike and dropped them because he didn’t want to promote just a single brand. So yes I believe when he says he’s not being paid.
Started with a Dicks starter set. .Moved on to Cobras and never looked back 😅 play rtx wedges, Driver depends on the day 😉 Us lefties loved to tinker ❤ But there is nothing wrong with a starter set to get your swing going! Once you break hundo or 90...Go treat yourself 😊 Best game ever invented imo ❤❤
Boy that is true. A buddy started golf late last year and the first thing he did was change the driver out for a Ping 410 he bought used. He is now looking at upgrading the rest of his woods and putter this offseason. He already bought the costco wedges. But as a starter set this is pretty good. Even the driver isn't that bad if you think about it.
My son recently got into golf and bought a macgregor set and I was quite impressed with there performance, but accept for the driver I'm no tiger woods by far , I found it hard to get loft and the sweet spot seemed very limited compared with my taylormade but a good buy 👍
Firstly I'd like to say as a new golfer I love your channel. I'm from Australia and I Finally I brought my first set of clubs recently and think they may be better than the Costco ones for around the same price. they are called PGF X6, maybe you could do a review on them
Thanks Rick. I am a new golfer and I have been looking into the Costco clubs. Can't seem to find them anywhere. I might just continue renting until I'm able to find these ones in store.
My first club for McGregor's, Golden bears, I think I paid about $100 for them at like Woolworths, and I loved them. Right now, my driver and my three-word are both McGregor V foils, maybe 27 years old, and I love those too.
Rick, I have three matching MacGregor diamond back clubs from 1913 if you're interested. They are in a 1920 Par Bag with a few balls and tees. The clubs are left handed. Just need a putter and you're set.
Out of the costco golf sets on offer the Macgregor set - The cobra set and the Callaway edge set which value for money and longevity wise would you pick?
306! Rick muscled up and got it out there. It looked like you were really swinging that Macgregor driver with all you had to give it the best possible, most positive spin. Nice set of clubs for the $$
Would love of you reviewed the Top Flite package set. I just got back into golf and went with one of their sets as a starter and other than the driver being a little difficult for me to learn and the fact that theres only 1 wedge that doesnt have the degrees labeled (marked with just a W), I have no complaints. Paired it with a cheap glove and 48 Top Flite golf balls (I have a habit of "misplacing" them into water hazards) all for about 300 bucks, its really a decent deal
The macgregor VFoil midded blades were the best clubs I ever owned. They took me from a 4 to a +2. I loved them. Then I got on a hype train, had some tragedy, lost a wife to cancer, stopped playing, came back and have never found a set of clubs as good as them. At one point macgregor was stellar.
I started golf 2 years ago with a similar full set from MacGregor and I still use the putter and sand wedge now although I’ve upgraded everything as I can’t find any that suits me better.
Nice review. I'd love to get your input for a new golfer training plan. What to work on first, second, third? How to practice? So many clubs with different strokes, in what order do you work on them? Is "all at once" too much? How much time on putting vs driver?
Get to the range and learn how chip and putt. Most strokes are in the short game! When you are no longer shanking and slicing then you are ready for the course! No one likes a slow player!
I got super lucky recently because my dad gave me a whole bunch of his old clubs because he bought a bunch of new ones, and then my old neighbor gave me a bag with an iron set and 2 hybrids as well. The only thing i really needed was a driver and some balls to get going. Im very much enjoying learning the game and appretiate the videos (especially the tutorial ones lol) thank you.
When I started golf at age of 14 - I had the worst clubs you could own - a $49 set from Northwestern. I could shoot in the 80's with those clubs - but when I played with my friends -dad's - clubs - a set of Kenneth Smith's - I realized that clubs that matched your swing made all the difference. Looking at these MacGregor clubs from Costco - I would have died and gone to heaven playing such clubs as a teenager. I think that's whose these clubs are for - beginning golfers - but they get a huge amount of performance for the technology and price.
I only started playing golf this year and this was the exact set I had brought. Since I got it, I had added a 3 iron from my late granddad's old set which still holds well, I have switched put my driver for a different one, a lob wedge was added very recently and the same day I am writing this. I decided to get a new bag, because of the bag kept twisting due to the part which folds out the legs
I appreciate the review. I am a beginner and bought my set of MacGregors off of Amazon. I paid a tad more than you, but not significantly more. I am very happy with the set. Am I vain enough to look at much more expensive sets? Of course 😂! Am I a good enough golfer (or golfist as my children say)? Naaaaah. Anyway good enough for Edgewood Country Club (PGH).
Rick, nice review and honest as usual. I'm thinking maybe with such a low price a buyer could seek out a very good used driver and sell the one from the set. But for anyone who just does a couple of corporate scrambles a year and isn't hard core, this would be just fine and look half decent in the bag. I'm wondering where these would rank with the other package sets you've tested from Costco?
I bought the MacGregor DCT3000 set through Wal Mart here in Canada for just over $400CAD. I added in the Costco wedge set on sale for $150CAD and a couple dozen Costco balls. For just over $600 CAD taxes in, I have a full modern set that replaced an ancient Fuzzy Zoeller set I bought in the 90's. The new set is similar to the set Rick is testing, but the irons have a plastic inset at the undercut and are in a blue theme, which I think looks much better. The woods are driver (10.5), 3, and two hybrids at 21 and 24 degrees. The putter has a textured face, that Rick's set lacks and is less curved in the fangs. The driver is much the same as what Ricks tested here with minor cosmetic differences. My set came with some choices, so I opted for the +1 inch length (I'm 6'3'') and a cart bag since I already had a decent stand bag. I've had them out to the range a few times and I've been pretty impressed with the durability of the set. After some adjustments in swing I was belting out 200 yard+ carry drives (last marker is 200 and that's about as good as I can expect at my level of play and the fact I haven't played in years). And popping balls into a nets set anywhere from 30 to 50 yards away with the wedges. The irons felt good to me and by the end of my second range session I was working on shaping shots (a skill I didn't know I had). I still need a lot of work but I was surprised how fast my game came back to me with these clubs. This is a perfect set for me for the way I play right now and gives me enough flexibility and club choice that I can be using these will into the future as my golf skills improve.
Those MacGregor clubs may be the best value, but they're not when you also leave Costco with 2 paddle boards, a barbecue, and a garden shed you weren't planning on.

But all the free food samples…

I like that Rick reviews cheap package sets more often than anything from major brands at this point

it requires a trackman, Dano. about 30K a piece?

Unless you're shooting for sub +5-7 handicap, those wedges are still great/excellent. Unless budget doesn't matter, then do whatever you want.
Love my Kirkland Wedges. Unless you are ready to pay $200 per wedge you can't beat the Kirklands.
Try md golf wedges recommended and not expensive
Great video Rick!!
if you play with high quality clubs, your hcp will go down much
My first set of clubs was a wilson box set at a similar price and the driver was the first club to be replaced for me as well.
That was my thought. Put a decent shaft in that driver and try again. I'm curious how it would perform.
Absolutely loving how Rick couldn't leave Trafford Golf Centre without making sure his name was in the Top 2 😂
Thanks
Not a bad set for a new golfer at a budget price. Thanks Rick. It was fun watching.
His Ping driver only carried 262.
@@justingreen4450 He only had one swing at that though, after hitting a whippy shaft that he had to control to get any real distance.
This looks like a real ideal set for me
Thanks for the review, and the enthusiasm you put into all the reviews you give.
Bravo Sir!!
I really enjoy when you buy and test club sets on your channel.
Me too. It’s what I’d do if I could.
Great review of yours 👍🏼
I’m not surprised by the driver distance, since you are putting a 10,5º stock package driver versus a fitted 9º Ping 😉
It would be interesting to face them in the same loft and flex of the shaft, at least 😊
I own a set of macgregor irons. Reverse Draft. Bought them second hand don’t know how old they are. But I find them absolutely marvellous. I’ve had them about 5 or 6 years. Changed the grips a few times. Great video.
God i love golf so much. Can’t afford a nice set though! Wish i has Costco in my area! Awesome video Rick. Love the videos!
Just build a set over time. Buy a driver....then wedges....give yourself 2 seasons. I still use a L wedge from 2002.
@@Poppinwheeeeellllllieeeeez same, Irons from 2011 Driver from 2015 and hybrid from 2017
As my first golf clubs set, I just bought two months ago a used (but like new) MacGregor set. Happy to see they could be not as bad as I imagined at first.
These package set reviews are great Richard. Growing the game should be one of your goals, and it appears you're doing it, and doing it well. Cheers
Are you honestly that naive that you don't know that this ia a paid advertisement?.
@@macman975 Nope. It isn't. Glad to be of assistance. Now go and troll elsewhere.
They got the German flag wrong on the box 😂😂
I always echo back a key point once mentioned "if you can remember 3 good shots from a round" it has been a good round,
enjoy it and wins will come..
Excellent review Rick, enjoyed very much. Haven't seen these in Canada as of yet.
Love watching you're site , learned and enjoyed so many features over the years ! Thanks so much !
Just bought a set from Costco I’m new to this sport looking forward to using them very soon.
Thanks for the review 👍
I broke the driver twice. The other clubs are fine. Grabbed a Srixon driver and a Sasquatch 3 wood and a new putter. Happy with my budget set for sure. Just don’t be surprised if you snap the driver swinging hard. They’ll replace it twice then you’re SOL
Loved the review like always. Informative and non biased. Shows your professionalism and willingness to give solid information
No. He's been paid for this. How is that non biased?.
He made sure that we knew he didn’t get paid for this
@@macman975 Except it's not a paid for advertisement, is it? As he explicitly says it isn't, and it would be breaking the law in several ways if in fact he was paid and didn't disclose it. For a RUclips content creator with the amount of subscribers he has, that would be extremely damaging if found to be explicitly lying in that regard. So to be clear, no it is not a paid for advertisement, it is a genuine review, and unless you have any evidence whatsoever to back up your claim (you don't), get off this comments section.
@@fuzzluvver69 Run along Sheeple!. It can't be true because he said so.😂
have you even watched his channel he has done numerous reviews of name brand clubs. Why if I may ask would he have to get paid to review Costco clubs. He was sponsored by Nike and dropped them because he didn’t want to promote just a single brand. So yes I believe when he says he’s not being paid.
I'm literally just getting into golf and using a minging old set of hippo clubs... I reckon these would be a perfect for me to start out with!!!
I'm not even a golfer but I just love these videos. Rick you're a natural!!!
The first club I ever owned/bought to try and get into golfing in the 90's was a McGregor 7 iron. The rest is history! 😁
Firstly I'd like to say as a new golfer I love your channel. I'm from Australia and I Finally I brought my first set of clubs recently and think they may be better than the Costco ones for around the same price. they are called PGF X6, maybe you could do a review on them
Hi Rick ❤️ this channel lots I'm a beginner but I've loved golf since the early 70s watching all the greats on tellly etc
A cheap set like this got me into golf. I played with it for 1½ years and it will always have a special place in my heart.
I have the Callaway X Hot iron set. There is an X24 set I've seen and these clubs look like that to me. I knew they would be good once I saw MacGregor
Definitely going to keep an eye out for this next time I'm in Costco. Thanks Rick!
My mate had a set of McGregor copper beryllium irons some 40 odd years ago, and absolutely loved them
Out of the costco golf sets on offer the Macgregor set - The cobra set and the Callaway edge set which value for money and longevity wise would you pick?
100% best value golf set I’ve seen! It serves the market that stix out priced themselves from. Which I think is phenomenal
Rickshiels, if u haven't been fit for it, any problems with Driver, check the shaft firmness, no?
(Mid, stiff flex in relation to swing speed)
I started golf 2 years ago with a similar full set from MacGregor and I still use the putter and sand wedge now although I’ve upgraded everything as I can’t find any that suits me better.
The spin with those irons is crazy….way more than some of the top irons I’ve seen you demonstrate ✌🏼✌🏼
Played with my 1974 MacGregor DX set through high school and I was a college golfer as a freshman. It was a great brand in the day.
As a beginner or value set it seems ideal, appreciate you doing the review.
Love the videos Rick. As someone who is looking to get into playing golf these videos are extremely helpful! Thank you.
Such a good review particularly for golfers starting off not knowing what to look for. Golf is HARD but videos like this are extremely useful 👌⛳
Hi Rick in 2003 I bought a complete set of golf clubs and standard golf bag combo ONLY £66 unbelievable 😃👍
MacGregor were my first ever set from my local Carboot , loved them.
Rick has his likeness on the window of the building at the range? That's awesome.
Fantastic video as usual. I'm getting those clubs for a friend. Much respect Mike NYC.
Thank god someone reviewed these I've been using McGregor's for years and I love them, and I would Recommend for any starter
Best golf club reviewer on RUclips. Great video!
I’m a 7 handicap, and just shot a 73 yesterday with the 14pc Stix set… I want a full review on those 14 clubs!
Awesome review mate, this is why we keep coming back
I bought the MacGregor DCT3000 set through Wal Mart here in Canada for just over $400CAD.
