    In this episode of A Week On The Wrist, Jack takes a closer look at the much anticipated and sought after Omega Speedmaster 321 in Stainless Steel. The classic movement has been resurrected from the past but how does it fare compared to the current Moonwatch and the original Moonwatch from which it was born?
    "Like Captain America, the caliber 321 fell from the heights into the seemingly unrecoverable depths of history - and like the Avenger, it has risen, unexpectedly, to attempt to become a new hero in a new, different, and very challenging world."

    Thanks for watching our Week On The Wrist Review. We hope you enjoyed it. We incorrectly stated in the video that Omega will be making 2,000 of these watches a year. The company says that they expect to do about 1,000 a year at the outset. For more information go to www.hodinkee.com/articles/omega-speedmaster-321-397mm-in-steel-review

    It’s funny that people talk about this watch being expensive, when the original 321 movement is basically a Lemania 2310, a movement used almost exclusively in $40-100k watches (e.g. Vacheron, Patek)

    • @jolness1
      @jolness1 2 года назад +3

      Feels expensive for a speedy but I don't think it is too expensive at all. Retail for it is more than reasonable. The cost of watches with a Lemania 2310 ébauche is more about the finishing of the case, dial and movement but it is absolutely an all time great. One of the finest column wheel, lateral clutch movements ever imo.

    Always love your thoughtful reviews on some historic timepieces. This is a holy grail for some and worthy of doing a little time travel in a collection. I met my first Speedy in the early 2000s and purchased an 1863 with a sapphire displayback and hesalite crystal for the then princely sum of $2K. I always loved its plastic crystal and thought it's weird but delightful to have a sapphire back. Fast forward decades later and I'm satisfied with my only Speedy, this despite many changes and this latest and greatest 321. Maybe I'm not a true believer, but just maybe there's so much depth and breadth to watches that it's too hard to look back when there's still so much more to experience, and so little time left to do it. Best wishes to anyone who aquires this special timepiece and all the places it will take you.

    I see a lot of comments here mentioning the price as the biggest downside about this watch, and would have to agree that $14k for an Omega (no matter how good) is far too much. It’s like Omega decided to follow Rolex up the price ladder but at a hypersonic speed(master😅). The pricing is definitely wrong on this one

  • @DanboShaw

    I wish that Omega had used a DOMED sapphire crystal instead of their usual boxed, milky-circle crystal. You shouldn't have to choose between the aesthetics of hesalite and the durability of sapphire.

    So many people whined about the price, look, the pricing, and the manufacturing process involved with this watch speaks for itself, this isn’t going to be your regular speedy, they aren’t meant for people who just wants a speedy. This watch is for collectors who would appreciate something more than your everyday speedmasters. And Omega knows how many of those people are out there waiting to hand over the cash for such timepiece. And they’ve certainly succeeded, the waitlist is around a year at my local boutique until this day, so really, they are selling like hot cakes.

    Everyone want's to complain about the price, but I truly think this is a far more beautiful, detailed, emotion inducing watch than the Daytona is. Not to mention, if this had the Rolex crown on it, being the storied and renowned, small run, hand assembled by a single watchmaker movement/watch, it would be far more expensive. I would choose this over a Daytona a thousand times over.

      @@brhyme92 Speedmasters from the 70s aren't particularly valuable. Once they switched from the c.321 to the c.861 following the moon landing, they were produced in fairly high numbers so they aren't really rare at all. In my opinion, you might as well restore it and get it looking new if it doesn't have any particular historical significance and you're not a collector that's trying to catalog how the watch changed over time.

    I had the first Sapphire Speedmaster with 1863 movement. I never liked the fact that it was non -hacking and it always ran right up to edge of its +11 seconds a day rating. I sold it and got the 2021 revision of the Speedmaster. To me it's vastly superior. Its 3861 Co-Axial Master movement is amazing. I've had mine for a few months and whether wound every day or every other day it runs at a consistent +1 second a day. Oh and it hacks. I respect the long history of the Speedys but for me this current model is the new grail.

    For those complaining about the price here, I can’t afford it either, but you’re kind of missing the point. if you can’t appreciate the differences between the Ed White 321 here and the normal one, then it’s really not for you. You’d say the same thing if it were, say, $2,000-$3,000 more. This is a watch for those who don’t have to determine whether or not it’s “worth it” or “going to appreciate like a Daytona”. The person who buys this watch isn’t constrained by budget and buys it for the love of what it is. Just because you can’t understand that or can’t afford that doesn’t mean it’s overpriced. It’s worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, just like $1,000+ smartphones and $100,000+ sports cars.

    • @doctorvins4979
      @doctorvins4979 3 года назад +3

      yeah you could say that about literally anything though: "If you can't appreciate this, you shouldn't have an opinion on the price" lol. I do think it was clever by omega to price the retail high. It seems that every limited edition piece these days gets swooped up and resold for more. Its a lot of hype, so might as well price that in at retail. This will weed out the fringe buyers and some resellers, while also appealing to enthusiasts who are not price sensitive. I get it, but maybe a lot more people would go for this model at a lower price, and maybe that would have helped omega gain some new luster and customers in a world where everyone just wants a rolex. Personally, I think its a great project, but to me its not competitive with other watches at that price point.

If Omega wishes to keep the 321 in limited hand-produced style, I'd expect hand finishing to the movement with a slightly higher price point, and a quick-adjust clasp on the bracelet.

    I don't understand how Vacheron get their 2310/2320s for the Cornes de Vache for example. It's pretty much the same and Swatch Group's own Breguet is the actual Lemania manufacture. Out of interest would that 19mm braclet fit a FOIS speedy ?

      I heard someone say they heard someone else say their AD told them it wouldn't fit. Take that with a grain of salt, obviously. :)

    Why would you wear 2 unrelated watches for the whole show, and call the show "watches on the wrist"??

    I’ve never owned a Speedy. Can someone please tell me what the signifcance/meaning of the “dot over 90 on the bezel”’is? This is the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve heard that

      The best answer I can give would be to forward you to the experts over at Fratello Watches: www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-differences-speedmaster-bezels/
      Also, I believe there is a "Reference Points" video that Hodinkee made about the Omega Speedmaster that includes details on the Dot Over Ninety/DON bezel. Cheers!

      Original Speedmasters’ bezel had the dot of the 90 marking above the number. Later versions had it to the right of the number. That is one of the easy clues for recognizing a version of the ones that were used on the Apolo moon program. (The complete story is more complex and long.)

      Its a watch geek thing. Much like Rolex green sub with flat 4 font, original production during that time period had their designs as such. If youtube was around back in those days, I'm sure some reviewer would say " the new bezel design now has the dot in the center of the 90.......wow, huge improvement." after Omega released a new version back in the 70s.

    It seems in this video that the faux patina is very subdued compared to other videos and the pictures on Omega’s website. Is this because of how it was captured on the camera or is the patina exaggerated in other examples and pictures? I’m not a fan of faux patina and it’s holding me back from loving this watch, but the way it appears in this video is not bad at all.

      I noticed this too. Looks white. I was offered this watch in an Omega boutique but didn’t like the faux patina (and the price was pretty sharp) so I’ve seen it in the flesh. This looks like a different dial.

    Great episode. Just a suggestion but when placing two watches side by side why not start the chrono at the same time instead of having one run faster than the other? I think with the two versions it would have been nice to really see how the hands compared.

    O.K. I have never owned A Speedmaster with a 321 movement, i will say that straight off the bat. I now possess two Speedmasters & began my Watch Collecting with a 1974 145.022, with the 861 movement. I wore it for 22 Years, NOT just one week. My current 145.0222 is running the 1861 movement. As far as i understand, the 321 movement runs at 18,000 B.P.H. Also, Omega used this movement in some older Seamaster chronographs before 1957. Yes, that is the movement that mostly went to the moon. It is reliable & robust. But not as accurate as the 861/1861, & much more finikky to service. Watchmakers do NOT like working on this movement. Previous to Omega " Relaunching" the 321, my understanding is that it was/is owned by Breuget? So what's The Big Deal in manufacturing it??? I smell the Ripoff Fish here? $14K U.S. for a movement that is Standard Production in The Industry? HUH? WHAAAA? I don't think so. Omega should make this the " Standard Production" Moonwatch if that movement is such Hot Poop? But they won't. It's an Expensive Exclusive & will cost You all Your Limbs to get serviced, plus a Real Close HairCut. I Love my Tough-As-Nails, accurate to 3"+|- 1861 & i will be wearing until the End of My Days! NOT just A Freebie Week!
