A Week On The Wrist: The Omega Speedmaster 'First Omega In Space'

- This week on my wrist is the Omega Speedmaster “First Omega In Space,” a watch inspired by a historically important model worn in space on October 3, 1962, by U.S. astronaut Walter Schirra - an event to which it owes its name today. We raved about the FOIS when it was introduced in 2012. An affordable manually wound chronograph with great history, it seamed to hit a chord with both the nostalgic and those new to the brand. It certainly looked the part, but how would it feel on the wrist?
Наука
Take a very close look; compared to every other Omega Speedmaster “space” watch, I believe this one looks the best! The symmetry, the leaf and baton hands, no “pusher guards”, the 39mm size - the proportions just work together so well in this one.
I want one, this is a classic time piece
This is the most beautiful watch I've ever seen!
Beautiful, definitely a dream watch
Perfect watch in every angle
Where's the "on wrist" part?
Again well done! Another great Hodinkee video.
Great video! Pretty interesting it's the same movement as in the 42 mm version. I suppose I'll have to add this to my collection along side the 42. Cheers!
I got this instead of the Moonwatch because it's more dressy at 39.7mm. I can throw it on a calfskin strap for more formal occasions, then put it on a NATO or a rally strap for day-to-day.
Perfection!
Incredible watch.
a dream watch for sure!
I need this watch in my life!
no you don't. this is not the man on the moon. it feels like a watch for the ladies.
I have this and a no date sub. The sub is for work (army), and I wear this at home. I love it, and do I care that it isn't an original vintage piece? Nope
The perfect combination! Congrats.
My favourite of them all.
thanks. amazing
Very nice, I’ve just got the 45 Apollo 17 anniversary edition and loving it. Have a few vids too
Nice video!
No much about what it was like to actually WEAR!
Just bought one, can't wait.
How was it?!
@@jetwow1112 One of my favorite watches. The Seamaster was my childhood dream watch. This watch is actually up there with it now...and I wear it as much or even more. Extremely gorgeous and in my opinion the perfect size. The regular speedies are too large for me and too common.
@@Meltedbutta7 Thank you, this was helpful!
Nice vid new guy!
Love it
This editor does a much better job than the other guys at hodinkee. Thank you for a good video without hipster snob opinions ruining it 👍
I had this watch with the big collectors box and it was a gorgeous watch, but don't personally like manually wound watches, so i replaced with the Automatic Speedster moon watch. I love the watch design and aesthetics so much, that i further went on to purchase the Dark side of the moon with that stunning black ceramic finish. Great additions to any collection.
Looks nicer than the MOTM to me
Wearing mine right now, it fits my childishly small wrists so much better than a Prof.
Any idea what are the anti-magnetic levels of this watch - if at all? I'm assuming it is...like the professional line. But I can't find the info anywhere. Just wondering how easy/difficult it is for this watch to become magnetized.
Paul B 300 or les, maybe
A little small for my wrist but a very beautiful time piece for sure. I would love to own it but never wear it.
If you own this watch, then you should also have a Sturmanskie, the one Gagarin wore in space (first watch in space). I'd even add Vostok Amphibia and for a more modern watch, Fortis B-42, Official Cosmonaut watch worn on the International Space Station (ISS), which is being worn by astronauts right now in space.
and maybe a sinn 142
39mm nice really want a 39mm manual speedmaster but if it has open case back that would be perfect.
But look at yourself, HolY FUCK Bruh ;'D
23 and if i don't eat, drink and put a roof over my head i can buy one each month of the year.
An open case back would mean all sorts of gunk will ruin the movement right quick.
@@trevbarlow9719 That's not true
@@Merth667 really? Go on, open your caseback and wear it for a week. I dare you.
+++Wonderful+++
they should have used the tear drop on the second counter.
It was the first thing I noticed.
I actually bought a tear drop second hand off of ebay (for around $200!!) because I want to eventually buy a pre 68 Speedmaster and this is the most common fault amongst the ones I've seen for sale (over time they must have ben damaged and replaced by the squared off version).
The Omega De
Ville Tressor (25200bph, 60 hrs power reserve chronometer) is an example of a
fine watch. For a connoisseur, A CENTRE THREE HANDS manual winding mechanism is
the best of watches, with long minute hand, and an even longer second hand. Usually
in Patek or Lange, we only see two hands or sub second hand manual winding
watches. They reserved the CTH for their finest pieces. All good watch maker
must have this caliber in their stable to be considered good. This kind of
watch is very rare in the Swiss industry. Try find one in a Rolex and see what
you get?
But,
strange, the Japanese made this kind of watches long ago, and, it seems like only
Gerald Donovan who is aware of it, haha....For the vintage, you can even find
the CTH manual wind done in 36,000 hi-beat, commonly found in Grand and King
Seiko. For new GS, there's the SBGW series, the latest being the SBGW231. With
24 jewels, 72 power reserve, and mine is accurate to 1 sec in 3 days. And, the
finishing is better than my Nautilus, both inside and out, including the
finishing of the mechanism. But, the Nautilus, being auto, is not a True CTH.
For a budget
CTH, there's the Orient Monarch. It's specs are similar to the Rolex 6694, only
that it top the Rolex with hacking function. The basis of a good auto mechanism
is a good manual mechanism. Collecting watches is so much fun if one understand
this basic principle.
I like it a lot. I keep wondering whether this caliber runs longer or shorter than cal. 3313 (321.10.42.50) before it needs service. Anyone?
The cal 3313 can have issues with the winding. This is the 1861 Lemania movement which is a manually wound work horse. All mechanical watches should be serviced in approximately 4-6 years time. And if you are is using the chronograph often it will require service slightly sooner. Some people like to wait 10 years to service their watch I highly recommend NOT doing this as it can do more harm than good. You can stretch out a service interval a bit if you are only wearing a watch on weekends or acouple times a month this will extend the life of the watch between service intervals.
Does anyone know the model# of the Grand Seiko at 0:05 of this video?
SBGM031
How often will it need to be serviced, and how much does that cost?
Chronograph servicing is always more than your standard three-hander with date function due to additional parts/time involved. Service intervals are subjective and many people have their own opinion, but I'm sure the owner's manual would suggest 5 years. I know my previous Speedy Pros suggested that. However, there are some people who frankly only service when it's not keeping time or stops suddenly. Current prices for servicing can be found on Omega's website - as of today it's $750 for a chrono.
speed master got 1 problem. the chrono cannot reset to zero. even quartz chrono have this problem but for quartz there is a procedure to reset to zero unlike automatic you have to send to shop to reset. good watch?
All very nice but why on earth did they delete the little arrow on the second hand ??
They didn't!
Very good wacht
Is there bracelet for this exact model?
Is a black leather strap available?
isn't the case smaller because there is no crown guard? isn't the bezel the same size as 3570.50?
I laugh at people who say this should have the cal. 321 in the FOIS - do you realize what that would do to the price? Have you seen what vintage Speedy Pros powered by the 321 sell for?
Hey i have this watch for sale
how much do you think i can sell it for? and wheres the best website i can place it? i tryied ebay buy EBAY CHARGES YOU AND PAYPAL so im loosing almost 800 dollares just in the transaccion fee for a watch that is 3500
why don't they ever tell the case thickness?
Love the watch!!! But.... Way too many speedy' versions over the years... A shame!!
That's not how they used to say "Schirra" in the day.
No crown guard... Nice
Did anyone notice that the left chronograph hand fell off in a lot of this video
noo thats the lighting :) the left chrono is different colored than the other 2 small ones (silver because hour and minute are silver as well)
Nick Saccary Good eye. I did, and that's definitely a negative. Look at it @ 3:54. It's almost completely disappeared.
If it happens in certain 'lighting', than it'll happen in real world use.
Nick Saccary and @4:03 I can't even see it at all.
That would drive me bonkers on my wrist, never mind when I was actually using it.
True it is the lighting
If they can't get a column wheel chronograph in that watch they missed the mark in my opinion and at that price point your almost at 145.012 territory which is a much better buy in my opinion. You can find great example of the 105-003 for around the 9-10k mark as well.
My issue with omega is they like to make it kind of look original and put a bunch of moon referenced on the watch.... How about a watch that just looks exactly like the old one if that is the point they are trying to make or make the point much smaller in some area that won't stick out on the watch and just maintain as much of the original size and styling as possible.
It's not like Rolex puts the first James Bond watch on all their submariners...
Omega wants tu upgrade their status, so they need all kinds of marketing, all kindzzz
Cal 321 isn't rare, but it would drive up the cost of this model to unaffordable levels if Omega were to reuse it here.
Well it looks like thats exactly what omega is about to do
Affordable for some!
You were right about that.
OMEGA had to choose 1861 for this and not 321 otherwise the price would have had an extra zero at the end. Besides 1861 is fantastic.
What strap is used here? Cheers.
Hirsch strap
Thanks mate
I'm graduating college and was wondering if i should get an Omega Speedmaster or Rolex GMT for my first watch? both watches to me are beautiful and would love to have to both in my collection. Any input would be appreciated.
You're unlikely going to be able to just walk into any Rolex AD and acquire a GMT. It'll be at least a couple months wait for the BLNR and even LN. Put your name down on the waitlist, get the speedy and when Rolex, then call you get the GMT.
@@spacebjorn Get the Rolex used from a company that is trustworthy. It will hold its value and will always be saleable.
Believe me, that is always the best way.
What strap you got on?
what is the accuracy on this watch, per day?
J.L Hoffy that’s pretty shit
salt2health mine +4s
@@tomsmyth5138 That's about 99.944% accurate,for a massed produced movement that's good!
The minute chapters are divided into 1/3 increments. This means the chronograph would time in increments of 1/3 or 1/6 seconds, not 1/5 seconds. Can't believe this isn't noticed.
notsoancientpelican It’s related to the beat rate of the movement which is 21,600 beats per hour. I’ll let you do the mathematics but it means the watch movement beats six times per second, so exactly twice for each of those 1/3 increments on the dial. It’s not a minutes track. The chronograph (stopwatch) hands on this watch are white and the regular time keeping hands are polished.
The vintage chronographs, not only this Omega, still beat modern watches in fine details. It's strange, because nowadays there are much better technologies available to create even finer details. But no, they give us: fat lines, fat fonts, fat everything. Why? Even the applied logo is not looking so nice. Still, if you cannot afford original model, this one costs pretty low in grey market. Bottom line - vintage beats modern every time. And from the distance, nobody notices.
MOTFM !!!!!!!!!
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
Difference between this and a professional?
+Dheeraj Kakulavaram Mostly cosmetic. Case shape (the Pro has crown guards and twisted lugs), the Pro has all white hands, the Pro's dial texture is very matte while this FOIS's dial has a very slight sheen. The way I see the two watches is, they make me think of what NASA might have asked Omega to change to make the Speedmaster more legible and more durable.
That's what the video is about!
The strap?
can't get a daytona so i guess i'll get this instead
Its now discontinued :)
like the leather strap, where did you get it?
Wayne Lentz I THINK it just comes with this watch
Is it good investment for money?
No
No watch is a "good investment" - only fools believe they are.
Price jumped up second hand, so other replies were clearly wrong...
LINDO RELÓGIO, BRSIL OK.
Very nice video, many people are pronouncing Mr. Schirra's last name correctly. It's not a huge thing but it's a thing none the less. It is pronounced Sheer--rah not sheera.
Is it me or the second's hand is missing?
It is there, it just appears black for some reason in some of the shots. 1:53 for example.
@@GFSwinger1693 It looks as though it "disappears" simply because it's not catching the light. It's polished, so at different angles and depending on how light hits it, you won't see it.
huuum not sure about the proportion of the strap and the case, look weird to me.
me heart #archieluxury
His name was pronounced "shur-AH". :-)
Two things... First, what about putting it on the wrist? That's what your title says... And, secondly, so sick of hearing about this watch. Yeah, it's a legend. There are more videos on this watch then there are stars in the sky. Leave it alone already. It's a good watch. It's a classic. It's a legend. We get it. Try getting some fresh material.
I went to the Omega store and asked to look at the man on the moon watch. They handed me this watch. I can tell you, it's very light and small and the leather strap is just like a lady's watch.
Hacking seconds hand?
No but backhacking and no it don't damage the movement
It's not the professional moonwatch! That's the only one to get.
No, it’s not the professional moon watch, nor does it say it is; it’s the First Omega In Space, very close to the watch Wally Schirra wore in Sigma 7 back in October ‘62. And by no means is it “the only one to get”. What an absurd comment.
Ben and crew seem to have conflicts of interests: Baselworld Patek (identifying just one) dinner, swag/merchandise from the manufacturers, cars and drivers sponsored by the companies, Lange dinner, etc. We're supposed to read your articles/posts and watch the videos as an unbiased source of watch industry information?
Nah, all the other journalists from different (web) magazines attend these events as well.
I thought this was originally worn by Russian Cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin.
+jason starek the watch worn by Yuri Gagarin is a Strurmanskie - currently has a reissue called the Sturmanskie Gagarin
I actually didn't like the design, but this video convinced me otherwise!
Heuer all the way
I'll give you $200 for it
Well I tried.
Really dig the leather band you have on yours though.

39mm?.Alas,way too small.Wish omega would make it in 44 mm+ for those of us with wrists above 8in. The trend of companies veering toward smaller face watches is starting to rule out bigger guys making a purchase.
thinkofacombination I got 8in wrist and it's just fine.
It ain't the 321 movement therefore shit
the whole "space watch" thing is a scam.
+Abhishek Srivastava
This type of scam is called "marketing"
That s no t the first one on the moon it just a copy of it and no good because no date and you don t need chrono
You clearly didn't even watch the video ... It's called the "FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE" - not the Moonwatch. Who ever said this watch was meant to be the one worn on the moon? You're just clueless. Guess what, the one worn on the moon had no date either. Guess what, some people actually do use chronographs for timing. Why do you need a watch at all? Just look at your cell phone...
pronounced Sha-rah like Hurrah.
Too many changes imo.
I hate the name hodinkee. What marketing firm came up with this crap word...
It comes from the word "hodinky" which in Czech means watch
