I first saw the Speedmaster at 11 years old and instantly thought to myself one day I will own that watch, then life came along, and 39 years later and on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing my wife handed me a huge bag, and in that bag was a big box, and in the box was the Omega Speedmaster Moon watch, a year later it gets wound everyday and worn more often than any other watch I own, I am 100% sure it will out last me.
Great story! Congrats on the moonwatch!
Bryan OConnor you have a wonderful wife!
Wonderful post! I just got my first omega as I near retirement.
What a great story! It's about your story as much as the great story of the watch. Similar to you, there was only one watch for me; years and years of wanting my own Speedmaster and thinking - maybe one day. On a trip to Tokyo I found a second hand dealer selling a pristine 1985 Speedmaster. My girlfriend at the time (now fiance) convinced me that the wait was over and it was time buy the watch I always wanted. I'm lucky enough to have a few watches but my Speedy by far gets worn the most.
I know the feeling
You don't "have to" wind the Speedmaster everyday, you "get to" wind it everyday. One of my favourites in my collection.
For the money, a good watch will be hackable. This isn’t.
@@omgwtfpwndYou can hack it, it just take a little effort. You use just the right backwards pressure on the crown and you can stop the seconds hand. That's exactly what I do with mine
@@omgwtfpwnd ironically allmost all of my watches hack. But i never set the time to the seconds. If you want a super accurate watch with all functions, super reliable etc then buy a g-shock...
Agree it is a joy to wind it.

Dude, the whole video is an add for Watchfinder.
lol... I enjoy these videos as well, but, lets be real, everything he posts is an ad for a watch he's trying to sell on his website. This is why it's always funny to me when he pushes some "undervalued" watch only to magically see it pop up for sale on their website.
I mean the whole video is an advertisement.

This was my grail watch. The one I was going to buy when I retire in 4 yrs time. But 3 yrs ago I found myself in a position where I could afford to get it then, so I did. Thought it was better to go without a few things in order to be able to start enjoying the watch much earlier than first thought.
To me, it's the most beautiful looking watch I've seen, and I love wearing it. Whenever I put it on I think of the Apollo astronauts, and realise I could never have had the courage to do what they did. But I can at least wear the same amazing timepiece.
@@jeeefthegreat7555 well Jake, as watches are a personal thing, I don't think that comment is relevant. You may have watches that you like but I don't. I certainly wouldn't comment negatively or disrespect your choice though.

Yet, if someone wanted to own one for whatever reason, then good luck to them. My modest watch collection are all ones that I find good looking, which should be all that matters when buying a watch.
And for the record, there's no way I could ever afford to buy a Richard Mille, unless I won the lottery, or sold my house and lived in my car !

I just purchased a 1991 Speedy (year of my birth) after searching long and hard for the perfect set with box, papers and an unpolished watch. Easiest and fastest $6.5k i’ve ever spent. I don’t regret it one bit. To anyone still on the fence about getting a Speedy, stop thinking and buy it. Once you have it on your wrist, you’ll know it was worth it. An absolute must have for anyone looking to enter the hobby imo! 😬
Had to wait for like 10 years until I could afford to buy my speedmaster professional. Happy to wear it every single time I put it on my wrist now! It is not just a watch. It also is the feeling you get when you wear it!
Thanks for giving quality content with details and history left out by many. As a newer enthusiast, I feel like I learned something worth repeating after watching your videos. Thanks again!
Welcome to the club!
Been watching for several years and still learning.
These prices are insane. I know it's going back a bit in time but l remember 40 years ago l was considering getting one of these. Back then in 1980 a speedmaster was £300. My take home pay as an office junior was around £350. Incidentally a Rolex 5513 submariner was £360. An ordinary worker could save up and buy one of these watches. Today if you want a decent Swiss watch you need a mortgage.
I agree. And yet they're selling more units now than back then. Maybe it's the easy availability of credit. I see the same with cameras, back in the 80s only an "enthusiast" would have an slr, but now people who have little interest in photography will drop a months wages (on a credit card) on a camera that they barely understand and only ever use the auto settings.
4000 pounds a month salary now days is not uncommon for average professionals, so still about a month pay for this watch to some extend.
@@jdc3636 yes but you're ignoring the fact that rent, food and everything else has also skyrocketed in price.

a lifetime of being a 'watch guy'... I've distilled my collection to two. A speedy and a 16610 sub. I cannot imagine being happier with anything else, they scratch the itch and check the boxes.
Oh, and not mentioned in the vid, Speedies are strap monsters. The look amazing on steel, nylon, canvas, leather. Mine goes from the impeccable SS bracelet to leather Rally, NATO, and everything in between..
Oh yeah and there is the whole moon bit too.
@@jeeefthegreat7555 right? There are many more desirable watches out there, and this guy seems to think that a sub and a speedy is what they boil down to. He's wrong.

Ive had my speedy for over a year now and i still find myself looking to buy another. i just love it that much, my perfect watch.
I've always loved this watch, I can remember when I was young and the price was £800 .
I met a guy recently who paid his way through med school in the early 2000s by buying any/every Speedmaster he could find. A dealer in Japan was paying him about $2000 each (even in poor condition).
They were such an underated watch for a long time.
The timing of this video is just wonderful!
Great video : I’ve had my eye on one for a few years.and a week ago I picked one up from my local jewellers . I got the leather strap version and I love 💕 it . Can’t stop looking at it . Awesome Omega 😎
I love my speedy 1863. First road trip I took with it i felt a sense of adventure. The way the black dial soaks up the sun and seems to get darker the brighter the light. The sexiness of the green lume with the white hands and indices. The super legibility of it. I can only imagine what it mustve felt like to be an astronaut sitting on top of a rocket with this on a velcro strap around the suit sleeve.
I've had mine now for several months. Never thought anything would challenge my Seamaster for a daily wear, but once it's on it's hard to take off. I hear they're going to update it in the next year or so and I can only hope they are mindful not to stray too far from it's origin.
It was love at first sight with the Speedy. I bought it the year I started my professional career. At the time, the cost of this watch was 4 times my monthly salary. It's been 9 years now and I still wear it proudly everyday.
Deserves a place in any collection. I love the process of winding it up after taking it out of the watch box.
Bought one brand new in 1973, still have it along with the box and papers. I even wear it occasionally.

I bought the FOIS as a graduation gift when I finished my MBA. Still love it to this day.
I got one and it's really an amazing piece. I bought it on the black croco strap but it's so much better on a cognac vintage leather band. The watch never gets boring, especially the one with the hesalite 'crystal'.
So happy, I bought my speedy a few weeks ago, the best decision i have ever made. A lovely watch with amazing history and pedigree.
Just got a pre-owned sapphire sandwich for myself as a graduation gift. Got a great deal and it’s beautiful!
how much?
Even though the Saphire sandwich was poo pooed in this video, I can’t get enough of looking at that movement through the display back.
There's also the 3572.50 with the hesalite front and sapphire back! Best of both worlds in my opinion. However, you can't beat a sapphire crystal for a daily wearer.
A big watch, no rotor. Ideal for a display back. Though some would say the movement is not worthy.
Agree. That's what I have and it's mechanical manual wind movement porn at its finest. No winding rotor to obscure the view!

I would love to see a video on the Heuer Autavia GMT. I had one as a kid in 1969, but it was lost when being shipped to Heuer for service. Decades later as an adult I still miss it, and used my love of all things space to justify a Moonwatch. Which rarely leaves my wrist!
I am 56 and on my 21st Birthday I got a speedy pro from my Dad just the same as my Brothers did. Still wear the same watch now its still just as Beautiful with the clearest display ever sometimes simplicity is best ! Its often copied but never matched.
Such a shame it's not the sapphire crystal model, the glass case back showcases the exceptionally finished manually wound chronograph movement.
"It was the right choice."
Always applicable to the Speedy.
The answer is yes. There is no question. Great review, thank you for posting.
I am currently on my 4th (now cal.1863). Over the years, my teenage relatives benefitted from my passion for watch collecting and Speedy Pro was always the 1st choice, when it came to presents. Speedy looks good and wears well with anything. Not as accurate as some, out of the box (not chronometer certified), because it is handwound, it becomes the second nature to correct the time, once every 2-3 weeks.
I was a "Space Kid". In 1969 my late Aunt and Mother went on a European trip and Mom asked me what she could bring back for me. I immediately answered, "An Omega Speedmaster". Literally one day after the Moon landing Mom bought me my watch in Zurich for, by todays world an incredible $115.00 USD. It is a Dot over Nine for you detail folks. I retired her from daily use in about 1981, however I take her out every July for a month's wear. After half a century she still keeps perfect time.
For me, the answer is absolutely yes. You don't buy the Moonwatch for its specs. You buy it because you can rock a legend on your wrist, and because it's insanely beautiful. That's enough for making me happy.
Thank you for reassuring me for what I have done:I bought my Moonwatch, I sold my Moonwatch. Then I bought one again for twice what I have paid the first time. (thanks to the currency fluctuations and Omega’s new pricing strategy.) This time I am keeping it.
Awesome vid, as usual!
The Omega Speedmaster was my first "real" watch. I was 20 years old and had a side job during my studies just to afford this watch. That was 14 years ago. Many watches have come and gone in between. Many of them much....much more expensive than this simple tool watch. But the Speedmaster stayed and will stay for good. I'm never ever giving this away.
For me it is simply a better and more aesthetically pleasing design than the Daytona. Amazing how vast the gap in aftermarket price is between them. Personally the dark side of the moon is the coolest variant they’ve made.
Would love to see a video about the smaller auto versions, feel like they are very overlooked specifically the triple date. would love to see more content on that watch I think it might be my ideal speedy!
I have a 25yr old speedmaster it's a fantastic simple watch that does what it says on the tin. I love it. Part of my collection that I wear more than my rolex airking and 2 miestersinger's that I also have. Bought from your bluewater boutique.
I had two of these, beautiful and well made however, a lot of people find them hard to size on the wrist. mine was too tight or with an extra link too big.
Just added a hesalite speedy on leather to my 214270 explorer. Perfect watch collection for me. Maybe a reverso to finish but the speedy is a fantastic watch.
My exact same collection, great minds think alike . Even went with the leather option because nothing comes close to the Rolex oyster bracelet. Even got the same first name ! Very strange lol

1861 . Just got mine. The best one I believe
One unique, and not well known, fact overlooked in your great homage to Omega was the acrylic crystal. Most think it’s not sapphire as a way to cut costs. WRONG. You can’t have sapphire in a space watch. If sapphire breaks, it shatters into tiny pieces that in zero gravity will get into the eyes and lungs of the astronauts. Acrylic was specifically selected because it just cracks into large, harmless, pieces if broken. Love the videos.
Lat time I was this early man hadn't landed on the Moon!
Very nice review. I enjoyed it especially as. I own this watch. I admire it but I seldom wear is because I don’t want to scratch the hesalite crystal. I’m glad I own the authentic version even though it’s offered with a sapphire crystal & a display back. Thanks for the review and Stay Safe.

Definitely yes! Got mine in the Saphire Sandwich Version and love wearing it everyday.
I’ve had my eye on the FOiS for a while. If things improve after this year, I’ll definitely purchase it.
MarcoCaifan87 the hessalite crystal won me over though. The smaller diameter of the FOIS did have me considering it, as well as the numbered production, but the true icon in the moonwatch is what I ultimately went for.
I have my FOiS as my daily wear. I like everything about it: the history of being a tool box watch gives my choice purpose. I bought my watch at the Fairmont Boutique in Vancouver. My next purchase will be the Railmaster.
Kevin Ackerman Railmaster is a lovely classic design. When the trilogy was launched in 2017 and the Railmaster was back I was very happy. A wonderful classic look. That and the FOIS give you two watches to cover most occasions 👍🏼

Short answer: No.
If you buy it, you are buying it because you like the idea of a manual wind chrono with some vague sentimental (but artificial) link to early NASA missions, which is otherwise pretty outdated and impractical tech-wise.
As a piece of NASA memorabilia, it's great, though the fact that you'll be buying a modern made piece as opposed to an actual one that went to space, or even just one from the same time period, makes that reasoning weaker.
There have been many “iterations” to the watch since the 1960s, some of them taking away from the correct phrase. If you've gone and purchased a speeeeeeeeedmaster then you've done your money anyway. The changed statement is because the sheepmaster isn't the only watch that's ever been worn on the moon.
So far about 5 watch makes have been worn on EVA or more on the Moon, exposed to outer space conditions:
Omega (June 1965), Bulova (August 1971), ... Fortis ( 1990s ? ) ... , Fiyta (September 2008), Seiko (December 2008) ...
Just ordered my SpeedMaster Professional to keep my Seamaster chrono and Planet Ocean chrono company. Just love OMEGA!
I have other watches, but my Speedy pro Hesalite is the one I always miss if I'm not wearing it. I absolutely LOVE winding it each day. It's a joy and a privilege to own. If I was given the ability to take one physical object with me into the afterlife, it would, without hesitation, be my Speedy.

Thanks for some very informative stuff about the moonwatch that i didn't know. Luckily for me, around 2 yrs ago, an acquaintance of mine, who knew i was interested in watches (i have a "Tank", vintage manual oysterdate, Tudor mini-sub, Franck Muller Conquistador, 1930's Rolex, Breitling "Tabarly") asked me if i'd like to buy "an old Omega" that he had "kicking around in his car glove compartment". Curios and puzzled, i asked him to explain. He said that many years before, one of his clients had given him the watch in part-payment of fees (he's a lawyer), but that he didn't particularly like the watch and it wasn't the sort of style that he would wear. So i asked him to show me this watch. He duly turned up with this Moonwatch. So, very calmly, i asked him what he wanted for it, and when he said 500€, i didn't hesitate. Not only that, but the icing on the cake is that this is a pretty early moonwatch, around 1971-1973. The only time in my life when I was in the right place at the right time. Result!
