He could be somewhere strung out on drugs or dead of an overdose like some other celebs. But, no, he's out here making an honest living. Nothing at all to be ashamed of.
A deeper perspective is that some of those people didn't want to have to take those other jobs because of the shaming and so went on a downward spiral of not making ends meet. Americans needs to stop expecting people to have some everlasting success story so they can feel inspired from their boring lives. Most of us are just trying to survive like we have been doing since the beginning of time.
A man working an honest job for honest pay should never, ever be shamed. There was a time in my life when I couldn't even get a job bagging groceries. Kudos, Geoffrey. Forget the haters.

I worked in a high-end grocery store similar to Trader Joe's for 8 years...it took me through my last 2 years of high school, college, and a few years after as I saved up money to start my own business. Even now, I look back at my job and my time there and smile. There are few other places where I've laughed harder or made more friends than when I was there, and I was in the best shape of my life due to all the physical labor. Sometimes I wonder if I should pick it back up part time again if only for the exercise aspect. I worked in Produce, and truck unloading 3 days a week was quite literally an amazing workout. Even though I make about 5x more money now than I do back then, I still visit back there and see my old coworkers and chat. It was a simpler life, and one I occasionally miss.

cartergirl3of3 he never said he was trying to leave the industry he actually said the opposite, he said wanted that job because it gave him the flexibility he needed to stay in the industry. He worked at my Trader Joe's! I shop there every week and spotted him sometime last year. When I asked if he was on the Cosby show, he nicely replied yes and held a small conversation like most Trader Joe's employees do. He such a cool guy. Every time saw him he was extremely polite, humble, unashamed, and a diligent worker. So the fact that another customer had the audacity to try to shame and disrespect him like that totally disgusts me. I hate to see him go but I'm glad more opportunities are opening up for him. And I'm glad he's shedding light on the fact that there is no shame in honest work, no matter how big or "small".

I loved working at WalMart and Home Depot it was fun, people were great, everyday is different, and a sense of family. I would have stayed if they would have paid more than minimum wage. Their is dignity in work.

I remember seeing him at a park sitting on a bench in new york city He was reading a bible and was a nice guy to talk to I recognize him from the cosby show. I guess He wanted to live a normal life and be a regular human being. We talked for a few minutes and he gave me his business card. Many years ago in the early 90s. I was excited to talk with him. It really depends. Many professors are adjuncts, are not paid much and have to work a second job. Some of the professors I had in college were adjuncts and would tutor on the side, work at another college or own their own business. A few years ago, Brittany Bronson wrote an article for the New York Times where she balanced being an instructor at UNLV and being a waitress. To this day, she still does both occupations, and still writes occasionally for the Times.

If you've never been to Trader Joes, every employee is a superstar. That place breeds talent and all my friends there say it's their favorite job. Not surprised Mr. Owens took his talents to TJ. Easy to beat a man down when you crave his experiences and your perception of his failure is realized. He's livin', man. You should too. Fantastic person he is.
I've never had a bad experience with Trader Joes people. I don't know about their hiring policies, but their employees are consistently polite and helpful, and seem to be enjoying themselves. Having employment at Trader Joes on a resume is probably a major plus.

Well for clarification if you are calling out people on assistance programs you should try being forced to rely on them. Plenty of people on assitance programs are out there busting their asses with odd jobs just to meet living requirements, most welfare and disability programs don't even cover enough for a single guy to live on.. I know, I'm a self-employed disabled man who got derailed by a permanent medical illness. I hustle as hard as I physically and mentally can just so I can hopefully one day not have to be stuck being shamed by judgemental assholes who just buy the whole "If you don't work in a socially standard means.. you are a lazy waste on society". Seriously context is vital to these cases, I know guys who work full-time high end pay jobs, who don't actually work hard and so do you... I know people on those assistance programs who would kill for that job and would work 20 times harder just because they are stoked to finally get a chance to work.

I remember a friend who's spouse was fired from an executive position, they were expecting a baby, also had few more children in the family. This guy totally stepped up and took a job in a fast food joint, working everything, even drive through so he could support his family. The older kids had a job, mom had a job and this executive was not going to be ashamed to be seen working in a fast food restaurant. With great pleasure he met the need that needed to be met, what confidence! That's a partner you want to have for life! No job is beneath you when you are making an honest living. I think Geoff is a first class guy, just like my friend.
I was a Transportation Manager for over 30 years, when the job ended I was in my mid-fifties. After more then a year it became obvious that companies were not interested in someone my age. So I wound up counting pills in a pharmacy. My dad once said "never be ashamed of money you earn honestly."
What's wrong with counting pills in a pharmacy? I'm a pharmacist, but being a tech is still a respectable job. They should definitely be paid more though.
mynameis nothing wrong with it, I really enjoyed it and enjoyed my co-workers some of who I still hang out with. I worked for CVS and agree techs are really underpaid for the many duties they perform. The pharmacist I had the pleasure of working for were also very hardworking. It must tough on them with opioids limited to every 7 days.

Casting Directors there hire their own family members and friends for projects over the people signed. They have a VIP group...a director calls up and asks a favor to give them work or a union voucher to help them get in the union....so much goes on. One guy keeps his ex wife working in really good extra jobs so his support is not so expensive! I know this as fact I worked with her!

Reality is no job is safe, so you have to do what you can to survive and provide for your family, speciality jobs, like acting, singing, illustrator, animator etc is not as easy to find, but even retail jobs are not easy to find nowadays as many say you’re over qualified. I don’t look down on anyone who works at McDonald’s or is a bin man or cleaner.

I started working in a grocery store the year before my senior year of high school, 22 years later I’m still there. I’ve paid for a house and have 2 kids. A job is a job and if you punch the clock and provide for your own, then no matter what you do, that’s good on you.

In my life I have held up to 3 jobs at a time to make ends meet. I had my own business for 22 years. Getting 2 degrees in 2 years showed employers I finish things. Now I'm disabled and working days are done. Geoffrey you are an inspiration to today's youth.

I worked in a high-end grocery store similar to Trader Joe's for 8 years...it took me through my last 2 years of high school, college, and a few years after as I saved up money to start my own business. Even now, I look back at my job and my time there and smile. There are few other places where I've laughed harder or made more friends than when I was there, and I was in the best shape of my life due to all the physical labor. Sometimes I wonder if I should pick it back up part time again if only for the exercise aspect. I worked in Produce, and truck unloading 3 days a week was quite literally an amazing workout.
Even though I make about 5x more money now than I do back then, I still visit back there and see my old coworkers and chat. It was a simpler life, and one I occasionally miss.

He worked at my Trader Joe's! I shop there every week and spotted him sometime last year. When I asked if he was on the Cosby show, he nicely replied yes and held a small conversation like most Trader Joe's employees do. He such a cool guy. Every time saw him he was extremely polite, humble, unashamed, and a diligent worker. So the fact that another customer had the audacity to try to shame and disrespect him like that totally disgusts me. I hate to see him go but I'm glad more opportunities are opening up for him. And I'm glad he's shedding light on the fact that there is no shame in honest work, no matter how big or "small".

It really depends. Many professors are adjuncts, are not paid much and have to work a second job. Some of the professors I had in college were adjuncts and would tutor on the side, work at another college or own their own business. A few years ago, Brittany Bronson wrote an article for the New York Times where she balanced being an instructor at UNLV and being a waitress. To this day, she still does both occupations, and still writes occasionally for the Times.
I sweep construction sites. and prob have 10 years of college here or there. And I love what I do. Never had a better time.

I've never had a bad experience with Trader Joes people. I don't know about their hiring policies, but their employees are consistently polite and helpful, and seem to be enjoying themselves. Having employment at Trader Joes on a resume is probably a major plus.

Well for clarification if you are calling out people on assistance programs you should try being forced to rely on them. Plenty of people on assitance programs are out there busting their asses with odd jobs just to meet living requirements, most welfare and disability programs don't even cover enough for a single guy to live on.. I know, I'm a self-employed disabled man who got derailed by a permanent medical illness. I hustle as hard as I physically and mentally can just so I can hopefully one day not have to be stuck being shamed by judgemental assholes who just buy the whole "If you don't work in a socially standard means.. you are a lazy waste on society". Seriously context is vital to these cases, I know guys who work full-time high end pay jobs, who don't actually work hard and so do you... I know people on those assistance programs who would kill for that job and would work 20 times harder just because they are stoked to finally get a chance to work.

I remember a friend who's spouse was fired from an executive position, they were expecting a baby, also had few more children in the family. This guy totally stepped up and took a job in a fast food joint, working everything, even drive through so he could support his family. The older kids had a job, mom had a job and this executive was not going to be ashamed to be seen working in a fast food restaurant. With great pleasure he met the need that needed to be met, what confidence! That's a partner you want to have for life! No job is beneath you when you are making an honest living. I think Geoff is a first class guy, just like my friend.
I was a Transportation Manager for over 30 years, when the job ended I was in my mid-fifties. After more then a year it became obvious that companies were not interested in someone my age. So I wound up counting pills in a pharmacy. My dad once said "never be ashamed of money you earn honestly."

It's people who think they are better than him or think it is funny that an actor who was on a popular sitcom has fallen from grace and is working a "menial" job.
There was a really malicious desire to try and humiliate and mock the man because, in the twisted point of view of the job-shamers, he'd come down in the world. But instead of bringing Geoffrey Owens down, that act of malice has actually elevated him. He's a good man!

I’m a teacher in the UK. During the summer holidays, I work in a warehouse doing shifts. I’ve always been slightly embarrassed about it but not anymore. Thank you Mr Owens

Actors have bills to pay to! I worked, cleaned agents houses, sold my plasma and acted.Gotta love him to get out there and do what needs to be done! I did a commercial with him few years back. Such a real person! Wish him well!

He didn't work every episode...so no pay....how many years ago? People don't have a clue how acting, SAG/AFTRA work....it is not glamorous at all! Hollywood is so twisted and corrupt. If you don't play the game you don't work it trickles down even to the background actors from Central Casting in Burbank! Casting Directors there hire their own family members and friends for projects over the people signed. They have a VIP group...a director calls up and asks a favor to give them work or a union voucher to help them get in the union....so much goes on. One guy keeps his ex wife working in really good extra jobs so his support is not so expensive! I know this as fact I worked with her!

Just because he had what society calls success doesn’t not mean he is a failure now. Having an education does not guarantee success either. 1990758 Exactly. Being a working actor is wonderful, but not all actors get the same opportunities or compensation. Many actors struggle and it is not always picture perfect.
Reality is no job is safe, so you have to do what you can to survive and provide for your family, speciality jobs, like acting, singing, illustrator, animator etc is not as easy to find, but even retail jobs are not easy to find nowadays as many say you’re over qualified. I don’t look down on anyone who works at McDonald’s or is a bin man or cleaner.

I started working in a grocery store the year before my senior year of high school, 22 years later I’m still there. I’ve paid for a house and have 2 kids. A job is a job and if you punch the clock and provide for your own, then no matter what you do, that’s good on you.

He was never actually made fun of. Someone sent the pic to the media and an article was posted to their site about it. Nothing in the article was disrespectful at all and they didn't even do a TV segment about it so barely anyone knew about it until networks like this one made up the lie that he was being job shamed.
The entertainment business is the most morally bankrupt and insane industry there is.The executives in Hollywood should be ashamed, not this guy. Most sane people who become famous remain low key, like Daniel Day Louis and Harrison Ford, and many others. The only difference is that Geoffrey 1) probably had a shitty agent who didn't negotiate for lifetime Cosby residuals 2) he never capitalized on his fame to bang out a few good roles/paydays, and 3) he's probably too normal and doesn't want to betray his soul. In my life I have held up to 3 jobs at a time to make ends meet. I had my own business for 22 years. Getting 2 degrees in 2 years showed employers I finish things. Now I'm disabled and working days are done. Geoffrey you are an inspiration to today's youth.
