A huge problem is treating celebrities like they have some sort of wisdom.
When most of them don't even have a high school diploma
@mikebordeaux8218 I'd love to see some evidence that most celebrities don't have a high school diploma.
@@christianfinkbeiner684 , do you watch interviews? Most have an I.Q. below 80
@@christianfinkbeiner684 I think a high school diploma is pretty common but not a lot of advanced degrees for sure.

At least it used too. Fox News was always about fake outrage.

"When you hate people, you don't listen to them." Nailed it. Very well put by Bill in this.
Why would we listen to Russian peasants and Republicans with zero military service?
He should take his own advice.
If you do not want to find a middle ground, compromise and have peace, then he's nailed it. That is why society is where it is today.
How ironic, he hates trump and lies about him
@@ZRgalie Middle ground cannot be found when the other side is so wrong. Why would anyone want to concede to something they know is wrong?
Kinda funny he is talking about not hating the opposition.. then he goes on calling trump voters fascist!
Calling someone a name while not nice isn't indicative of hate. Hate is an emotion
Calling people that fit the definition of "fascists" fascists is neither an insult nor a emotional response. Like saying that Trump is a sex offender unfaithful convicted felon is nothing more than stating proven facts, without any need to appeal to hate.
Trump isn't his opposition, so your logic is poor. Mahar criticizes both sides. You might notice if you are not too biased.

Aging is mandatory. Maturity is optional.
And wisdom is a costly upgrade not available to basic models!
Yeah, and being older doesn’t mean you’re right either. Just on cognitive terms it is more likely to mean you’re wrong, obviously.
You nailed it, thanks. Can I use it on Ttump and Biden? (both old, the second mature)
@@ncromos Cognitive? Really? Do you know what a savant is? Cognition is worthless without experience and that comes from living. Don’t worry, you’ll get there! Man, woman, person…!
@@chenzen1578 Careful, mature is what we call the fruit before it falls of the tree. Maturity is not a synonym for wise. We all grow old that live long enough, some mature well even precociously, but few grow wise with a chance to benefit others with that wisdom.
When you hate someone, you stop listening to them. So freaking true and it's one of the biggest problems in polarization attitudes.
It's why nobody listens to Maher anymore
TDS is proof of that. Despite the fact that EVERYTHING was better under our former president people still hate him. I have to believe it is because they are indoctrinated by the MSM lies
@@honuman39 if I were in the woke left cult, I wouldn’t wanna listen to him anymore either.
That sounds clever but it's nonsense.
There is no "woke left cult".
Being aware (or woke as you've intoned) of government corruption, wealth inequality, manufactured outrage is being informed.
Left includes liberals, Dems, progressives, socialist, anarchists- so that's meaningless.
And, look up the definition of "cult". It has a definite definition.
@@bryan805
maybe their ideas are why you stop listening to them and why you hate them?
Maher is the epitome of irony: he talks about how irrationally hateful both sides are to each other and how bad for the US it is, then goes into a TDS tirade.
you don't have to like Trump to vote for him. I wouldn't want him to date my sister, he's obnoxious and a blowhard. But he is also the ONLY politician who is RIGHT about issues neccesary for the survival of this nation, when Joe Biden is WRONG about EVERYTHING. So I think of what's best for the United States of America, look at my choices and vote TRUMP!
I don't know exactly when it started. Just 13 years ago, people had different political views BUT WE STILL SAT AT THE SAME TABLE. We ate the same crappy fast food burger, drank the same milkshake from the same broken machine, BUT WE DIDN'T HATE EACH OTHER FOR VOTING FOR THE OTHER GUY. What happened!? When did things change from "my fellow Americans" to "us vs them?"
It's pretty simple actually... When the left decided that Trump was a threat to their marxist, socialist, anti-American anti-freedom view of the world, they used whatever tactics they could to smear him and supporters, effectively polarizing the country politically and making it socially "acceptable" to hate the other side. I squarely blame the dems on this
Obama was elected to deliver "hope and change". But he had no intention of delivering either. He was just a genial, charming corporatist who worked for CitiGroup and had absolute no desire to deliver any kind of New Deal, which the country was crying out for. Sanders would have tried to do so in 2016, but he was stomped by the DNC.
So although Trump and the MAGA Republicans are the immediate menace, it's the failure of Democrats to aim for anything more than status quo corporatism that has really led the USA to this point.
MAGA hat. That is when it changed. Some dude I worked with was a pot farmer and Still thought DJT was gonna fix everything. Lies and grift.
It started around 2013 when Twitter blew up. It got worse in 2015-2016 with the Presidential Race. I don't know how we fix things.
The division in congress really started in the mid 90's when Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House and ordered the Republicans in congress to stop hanging out with Democrats. He wanted them to go home, to their districts every weekend. Prior to that, Dems and Reps would stay in DC and spend weekends together, going to the same parties, same restaurants. They played softball together... and talked. The two sides were friends, Americans. Gingrich changed that.
You have a skewed view of history. You really sohuld learn the history of the Democratic Party, for instance.
Your ignorance doesn't shock me anyway.
@@Meditations2024 read Gingrich's book. He's proud of doing exactly what I stated.
@@user-rk3ku4ue7jMost MAGATS can’t read
I came of age politically during that time and I completely agree with the shift in politics in the time of Gingrich. That whole “contract with America “ was just BS. I also realized that there was only one party defending social safety nets (medicare, social security, unemployment , disability, and medicaid). I became a reluctant Democrat and have never looked back.
Absolutely true. Gingrich has a lot to answer for. The vilification of the political opponent instead of a hard debate that still makes a mutual drink together in the evening possible. It brings the US to the brink of civil war and endangers democracy itself.
Come on Bill, I was alive and well during the Vietnam war (although a conservative then) and I promise you there was plenty of tension between various student groups over the war. The Vietnam war was extremely contentious to some degree much more than what is going on now.
He def does have the mentality of when it was in my day it was X, but today it’s Y so it must be wrong
Except, that as soon as the draft ended in 1973, so did all of the unrest, virtually overnight.
Revisionist history is intoxicating, isn't it?
Bill Maher has defended the Vietnam War
You have to realize that Bill is NOT a contemporary of the student activists of the 60s. He was still in Jr. High when the colleges were going at it.
Sure, he knows it better than the kids today, but he's not one of them. Maybe his older brother or sister, but he was starry eyed on the sidelines.
To quote Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?"
No.
"The Right doesn't believe in democracy anymore."
Last I checked, we weren't trying to kick anyone off the ballot or throw political opponents in jail. Talk about projection.
The truth is Bill Maher is basically right wing now. Not because he changed, as he says, but because the lines of what's left and right moved so crazy that well, he might not like it, he's right wing now. I don't know if he refuses to admit it because it would hurt him personally, or because it would kill his career, or because he would not be listened at all....anyway, he refuses to admit it. He doesn't want to see it. He's right. Far right even. Everytime he is questioned about his position on the politic board, he forces himself to strike even harder on the right. This is kinda obvious in this interview (again). He's lucky there is Trump, the ideal easy target ; the orange man is the perfect punching ball he can punch again and again without taking any risk. Every time he hurts the left, hey, let's punch Trump ! It makes it look even, from afar.
The guy has some balls, he's going machine gun against the craziness of the left while almost all the guys from his position and generation did submit because of the fear to lose their privileges. The king changed, and the guy said "fuck the king". Kudos to him. But he's not honest. He's still lying a bit because he's not THAT brave / mad. Every week, he says proudly "fuck the king" every week. "Fuck the king....but I'm still a loyal servant. look, I also attacked the king's ennemies".
Ohio literally just tried to keep Biden off the ballot because of a deadline. That was never a problem in years past. Trump is an insurrectionist. It is unconstitutional to keep him ON the ballot. And nobody went after Trump because of politics. They went after him because he's a criminal. If they wanted to go after him because of politics they could have gone after him for selling pardons. As soon as he left the white house they started investigating him. He hadn't even said he was gonna run yet. The right gave up on democracy. Democrats did not
I almost forgot, you were supposed to say "we're not a democracy we're a constitutional republic" because at some point you guys started believing the 2 were mutually exclusive. I imagine it was around the same time Republican politicians started saying they are so you guys would be real comfortable with giving up democracy if you believed we never had it. Here's a tip, when someone tries to tell you that you don't live in a democratic nation, that's a red flag
That line already isn't aging well. Jut like Democrats pretending MAGA was anti-semitic (which aged HORRIBLY) their anti-democracy rhetoric is a close second for BS line of the year.

John OIiver did a much more realistic look into the gaza situation. Maher is very much blinded on that topic.
The world needs more kindness. Mainstream Media and Social media pushed us to the edges. The most important thing he said here is about how both the left and the right have gone to the edges. We need more voices from the center. But that doesn’t make good news stories
Its that media and platforms profit from attention, alerts, clicks, shares, and it most gets those things from instant reactions and judgement, finding controversy and shock content. Tec companies exploit addictive behaviours and that's why there is the complex mess that we're all stuck in.
Its not the fault of the population nor any collectivist, tribal, clique, movement mentality, because there's not one of us who isn't part of a group.. we are pushed more radical and hair triggered by social media- how it fosters extremist tendencies and takes away real human experiences offline. Empathy becomes a casualty.
If we are to break the cycle, we would need a national- global even, mass exodus of twitter, fb, tiktok, reddit, yes even youtube so they are forced to improve or so people relearn perspective and human connection.
On the centrism point, i don't think there's a shortage of centrist voices, but even they are encouraged by algorithms to say extremist things to get attention good or bad. I don't think more middle of the road representation is the answer.
The Democratic Party is literally the center.
BS...when has the left gone too far? don't dare put us in the same company as the cult party... racists, bigoted, woman hating, bully white nationalists party by trump. we democrats aren't attacking our capital on order from a mafia thug! and our cause doesn't make good stories either. republican corporations have control of all the media while liberal, Progressive tv shows have been forced out of mainstream. ruppert murdoch owns practically every local tv station & newspaper in the country...and now which party is controlling women?? which party has gone too far?
As you said, many have gone to the edge, or close to it, on either side and hate the other, so ANY centralist point of view will be seen by either side as being "one of them libtards/MAGAts" and will turn their noses up at such ideas.
Conversely, there ARE a lot of centralist views and voices out there, but they get shouted down by extremist on both sides.
Tommy Lee Jones said it best in Men in Black; "A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky dangerous animals. You put a bunch of people together and you spook them, what you have is a mob. And a mob is only as smart as its dumbest member."
We;ve had two decades of centrism in Europe and the US. We need a lot less "tolerance" and globalism and a lot more anger at how the globalists and centrists have sold our countries out.
The smartest guy on the planet hasn't figured out it's not smart to think you're the smartest guy on the planet.
Sorry but the smartest guy on the planet is the one that acknowledges he is not. We call him Buddha I very seriously doubt he called himself such. The rest of us are wannabes.
Speaking of intelligence, do you think men can have babies?
Bill has a different reading of Socrates...haha.
He claims to be for evolution, but apparently in ways to think, he's against evolution.
As unlikely, as it sounds (not quite sure he ever meant that hyperbolic assertion), you would still have to prove his points wrong, instead of accusing him personally. Lots of logical lousiness in these comments... when people become too dogamatic on the right or the left, they negate critical thinking.
I am slightly older than Maher and Zakaria and have respected both for decades. I don’t understand how they both, along with many well to do liberals, keep gliding past the decline of the middle class over the past 4 decades as the real reason for our current polarization. Trickle down; free trade for multinationals while ignoring workers; corporate Democrats going along with the Republicans’ tax cuts for the wealthy (camouflaged by some tax cuts for the middle); Obama’s bank bailout with no meaningful conditions - all have gutted the middle class. Per Meredith Whitney, 46% are doing well and are part of the 401k, investor class which is driving the economy. That leaves 54% who are barely making it, amidst never before seen wealth inequality. Trump is a symptom of a society that lost it’s way. (For example, we actually revere multi billionaires without seeing the danger they represent to democracy.) Unfortunately, Trump is an excellent con man and the ‘left behinds’ are his marks. Try addressing the 54% and their concerns before crowing about how well the 46% are doing in this economy. Then talk about how Biden, for the first time in decades, is actually trying to curb monopolies and fairly tax the Uber wealthy. Then, thank Bernie and Warren for helping Biden see the reality for too many Americans. Then maybe you can keep our democracy, despite the appeal of Middle Finger politics.
They're rich. These guys have an actual exit plan for Trump getting elected - They plan to leave us in the fire they set.
Central Banking and reckless fiscal policy, actually
I fail to understand how you respect either, Zakaria who has credible plagiarized and was suspended briefly from both the WaPo and CNN, and said it was "a mistake". Bill Maher, I don't even have time to go over his BS and idiocy. Strange fellas to have any respect for.
Because they're controlled opposition. That's why they're on TV. It's not a mistake, they're doing it on purpose. Why do you think he only called out the social justice movement AFTER it took over all instituttions in the country?
What are the Obama bank bailouts? I recall the Bush bank bailouts, but I dont recall Obama doing the same. What am I missing?
For the past 7,000 years, there has always been a struggle between the Nomads (Rural folk) and the City Builders (Urban folk). The Nomads are connected to the processes that are required for LIFE to happen. City Dwellers are connected to existential realities, that create demand for the Nomads productivity, and this provides Economic potential. Works great, until the City Dwellers begin to tell the Nomads, how to do the job...that they've been doing for thousands of years. These 2 worlds can only exist side by side; However, they CAN NOT exist as one and the same. There must be TOLERANCE, for the system to function. Nomads must be allowed to be...nomadic, and City Dwellers must be allowed to live existentially. This is why the Electoral College is so important. It provides Nomads the required political protection, against and ever increasing City population, and a shrinking Nomad population. Respecting this boundary is what makes us great, and not divided.
A misconception of cultures of which there are three basic types. Hunter/gatherer, Nomadic/Pastoralist, Agricultural.
Do you know how Electoral College works? Look at a 2020 presidential election map broken down by county. Look at the red and the blue. The cities still win.
Not nomads, rural people. And the rural population can survive without the urban population. The same is not true in reverse.

Which why I watch his show- I have learned so much about the world through his guests. Sometimes I like- ok white libertarian man blah blah, and other times I’m like- oh wow, I didn’t know that/think about that/etc. My life has changed for the better watching Bill Maher’s show- not because of Bill Maher himself, but because of the opportunity to hear different viewpoints that allow me to hone in on what I think about the world based on hearing different people sharing their different ideas, life experiences, knowledge and opinions.
I live in a town where people do not want to hear opposing viewpoints and it frustrates me because our little city is having many issues because there cannot be a consensus about how to move forward as discussions of varying beliefs are virtually impossible. It saddens me greatly.
His interview with Marianne Williamson on Club Random revealed how out of touch Maher has become. He complains about how LA is not falling apart based on what he sees when "driven around" the city. But when Williamson said she visited Skid Row to counter his viewpoint, he's like "well why did you go down there??"
I think most people probably agree with him 75% of the time. It's just that the 25% really pisses them off and it feels like a lot more than it actually is. I'm a middle-aged man, but I'll be the first to admit that to older generations, most of young people's ideas are "stupid". A lot of times it's the stupid ideas that pushes the society forward. Bill Maher has undoubtably became cynical. Vietnam Era was hardly a better time. How were Vietnam veterans treated back then?
This is the problem having comedians do politics. Their job is to ridicule, not to resolve. We don't need people to "make fun of both sides". We need people to bring both sides together and provide solutions.
We need both opposition and inclusion of each side. Without opposition, there is no one to “check the breaks” of a society.
In the context of comedians being political commentators, they should not be the MAIN SOURCE OF REASON…but that’s where we have ended up…because the people that could really drive country unity, refuse to do so.
I think comedians should do politics when appropriate. The fact that their voices are currently the most salient, prominent, and popular ones speaks to the lack of non-comedians who speak truth to power effectively and interestingly.
I think most comedians would be happy for their places in the political sphere to be usurped by people more effective in communicating the points they are trying to make.
"We need people to bring both sides together and provide solutions."--- that is not the job of a comedian, that is the job of a politician or a clear-thinking citizen -- like YOU! You just reminded me that I need to be engaged in political thought and activism. Thank you.

What Bill is really saying here is this: "My book is currently number 4 on the New York Times best seller list and I'm doing this interview to push it to number one." That's about it.
Their ideas are stupid. Most ideas are stupid.
but especially uneducated celebrities ideas are extremely stupid. Be like if Patrick Mahomes started getting really philosophical about life, politics, because he is a good QB, and thinks we are hanging on every word he says, about things he knows little of. Actually, he has an education, most Hollywood celebs have little to none, all they know is acting. Not sure how they use the associative property to deduce they have a lot of wisdom to pass on because they are good actors. Some of them.
The problem with Bill Maher is that he might have good instinctive feelings about things, but he doesn’t keep himself informed the way he needs to in order to occupy the position that he’s found himself in. A lot of the people who interview him know quite a bit more than he does about the issues he talks about. He just doesn’t take the time to inform himself sufficiently.
How many bachelors and masters degrees are you demanding he attain? 🤔
For example?
He could start with 'shut up and listen'.
He doesn't understand the deeper issues and can't speak to them at all. People that understand the issues have turned him off. Educate.

Bill has a BA from Cornell university, his course of study was history, so he is up on the history the world, more specifically the Middle East, and Israel. Bills mother was Jewish.
Let's not be giving the "Reagan Era" such a golden glow. He was an actor, a radio, movie, tv guy, he could communicate.
Reagan made a mess of this country.
Take that one step further, maybe about a million actually, he destroyed the middle class, he busted unions, he started trickle down economics, he was a racist, he destroyed black neighborhoods with crack. He was a horrid, evil man And he's one of the reasons we have so many homeless right now and so many mentally ill people out on the streets.
Trickle Down Politics was his Big Move and it was an absolute failure! Oh....it helped the Rich like Him....but the rest of us Paid for it!
As you point out, Reagan was simply a talking head. A B actor who could repeat other people's words. He made movies with chimps. How are people missing that? And he was the runway for idiots like George W Moron and Trump.

Yeah, it was very refreshing to finally hear someone in the public eye actually say something relable.
To paraphrase: "Am I out of touch? No! It's the kids who are wrong". Seems like most public figures turn into a Simpson's meme eventually.
Well, the problem is that the kids now get their wisdom from each other rather than from adults, via social media. Their concepts and ideas aren't anchored by wisdom and real-world experience. It's just kids jabbering to other kids in an echo chamber of poorly-formed chains of reasoning.
@@bonglesnodkins329 Agreed. lol if you dont see how fucked up the country is right now. The internet and shareholder driven media have created a landscape where no fact is agreed upon and people pose opinions as facts. Trusted sources are not trusted and liars are regarded as prophets. Right now the political right in america is reminiscent of the nazi party while the left defends the actions of terrorists and insists on treating them with the same respect and dignity as a sovereign nation. And these are a few of the big issues. You got the Supreme Court which is corrupt both because of the imbalance of opinions but also you’ve got Clarence Thomas who’s bought and paid for and Alito who publicly displays his lack of impartiality. On the left you have morons claiming that women’s sports require equal pay despite bringing in a fraction of the revenue and that transgender women (people who went through puberty with a penis but now identify as a woman) should be allowed to play in competitive women’s leagues even at the professional level. I could go on and on about the stupid things kids believe these days but ive got better things to do.

Such a tedious bore.
Last year, I just had to stop watching the show because it was so unpleasant.
So, you don't like him because he does what every generation does and thinks they aren't the problem, its every generation after them? It's not that serious. All older people do that and the young people blame all the older people.
He is very bitter.
Agreed. If we are lucky like Bill, we get to grow old and reimagine our youths in the way that most cushions our ego. His memory has become narrow and selective, and he has become the old cynical person he once dreaded.
Strongly disagree. I'm only forty, I remember vividly being in my teens and early twenties. Mostly we were not that informed on political matters and so didn't bother PRETENDING to have strong opinions on them, unlike kids today. It also WAS different in the sixties with the protests against the Vietnam war, because that was not a nuanced situation any longer at that point. Fellow young countrymen and countless civilians were dying fighting a losing war that no longer had a purpose. The most conservative people in government and the military even knew it, they just weren't sure how to go about admitting it and extricating our forces yet. Could not be more different that the current fighting in the Middle East right now, especially considering we aren't even a combatant. Why no outrage about the fighting in the Sudan, or Myanmar? Oh yeah, no white people in those conflicts to get mad at. Right?
@@ebogar42 My opinion about him has nothing to do with any generation and everything to do with him. It is not true that everyone in each generation blames young people. What I love about Bill Maher is that right wingers really like what he says about the left. And so then those right wingers also hear what Maher has to say about Trump and MAGA. Usually right wingers avoid media that has anything negative to say about Trump and MAGA, but with Bill Maher some of that truth manages to get into their ears.
A very good point.
Yep. MAGA's celebrate when Maher slams the left but....they can't "unhear" his negative comments about T and the right. Maybe 2% of that penetrates but heck....better than nothing.
As a comedian, he also visits red states and performs shows where magas come and hear.
You’d think it works that way, but it doesn’t . He provides talking points for them and only reinforces their worldview . Also, shitting on the left is a REALLY dumb thing that a) diminishes his audience , and b) causes democrats to lose elections . So play with that fire but it will only burn you.
His TDS is a turn-off because on the subject of Trump he judgement is poor.
I must say, I'm the opposite of Maher on many points. But I do appreciate his concern for the polarized views in this nation and what a threat that is. Christ said that a house divided cannot stand. We have to start hearing one another before we tear each other apart. One of the things I liked about John McCain before his death was his willingness to cross the aisle.
Lincoln said „a house divided against itself cannot stand“
"A house divided against itself, cannot stand."
I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other.
Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new - North as well as South.“
This is true and wise. However, it's hard to compromise with people who won't listen to you, don't know anything about your situation yet have strong opinions about things you do which don't affect them or anybody, and actively tear down your humanity. E.g. you can't ask trans people to please be trans only where no one can see them, or ask black people to be satisfied that they're allowed to vote, and stop complaining that they still experience systemic racism.
@@Sarcasticron Yes, this is a democracy. Thankfully, not a theocracy. Though I'm a Christian, I don't support a union of church and state. We live under grace, not law. @@Sarcasticron And btw, my youngest child who I love dearly is trans and an atheist. We don't see eye to eye on many points, but our love sustains us. When you are so out of touch with reality you think what you imagine is the reality.... yikes...
If you watched the Maher episode when Krystal Ball was on, the contrast between her nuanced and informed ideas about events contrasted sharply with Maher's simplistic and pandering opinions. Maher will complain about people who wear their face masks in their cars like it's a personal insult. I see people do this and I don't care because it will never affect anyone else. He complains about how many students protest like it's a national problem when it's much less than 1% of students who even protest. Repeat stories have shown that many of these protests have Jewish students in them and they overwhelmingly do not support Hamas, but he acts like they all do. They aren't passing laws that restrict people's rights, so to compare them to politicians who do is a false equivalency.
