    • @robby2161

It's pretty simple actually... When the left decided that Trump was a threat to their marxist, socialist, anti-American anti-freedom view of the world, they used whatever tactics they could to smear him and supporters, effectively polarizing the country politically and making it socially "acceptable" to hate the other side. I squarely blame the dems on this

    • @bonglesnodkins329

Obama was elected to deliver "hope and change". But he had no intention of delivering either. He was just a genial, charming corporatist who worked for CitiGroup and had absolute no desire to deliver any kind of New Deal, which the country was crying out for. Sanders would have tried to do so in 2016, but he was stomped by the DNC.
So although Trump and the MAGA Republicans are the immediate menace, it's the failure of Democrats to aim for anything more than status quo corporatism that has really led the USA to this point.

The division in congress really started in the mid 90's when Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House and ordered the Republicans in congress to stop hanging out with Democrats. He wanted them to go home, to their districts every weekend. Prior to that, Dems and Reps would stay in DC and spend weekends together, going to the same parties, same restaurants. They played softball together... and talked. The two sides were friends, Americans. Gingrich changed that.

The truth is Bill Maher is basically right wing now. Not because he changed, as he says, but because the lines of what's left and right moved so crazy that well, he might not like it, he's right wing now. I don't know if he refuses to admit it because it would hurt him personally, or because it would kill his career, or because he would not be listened at all....anyway, he refuses to admit it. He doesn't want to see it. He's right. Far right even. Everytime he is questioned about his position on the politic board, he forces himself to strike even harder on the right. This is kinda obvious in this interview (again). He's lucky there is Trump, the ideal easy target ; the orange man is the perfect punching ball he can punch again and again without taking any risk. Every time he hurts the left, hey, let's punch Trump ! It makes it look even, from afar.
The guy has some balls, he's going machine gun against the craziness of the left while almost all the guys from his position and generation did submit because of the fear to lose their privileges. The king changed, and the guy said "fuck the king". Kudos to him. But he's not honest. He's still lying a bit because he's not THAT brave / mad. Every week, he says proudly "fuck the king" every week. "Fuck the king....but I'm still a loyal servant. look, I also attacked the king's ennemies".

Its that media and platforms profit from attention, alerts, clicks, shares, and it most gets those things from instant reactions and judgement, finding controversy and shock content. Tec companies exploit addictive behaviours and that's why there is the complex mess that we're all stuck in.
Its not the fault of the population nor any collectivist, tribal, clique, movement mentality, because there's not one of us who isn't part of a group.. we are pushed more radical and hair triggered by social media- how it fosters extremist tendencies and takes away real human experiences offline. Empathy becomes a casualty.
If we are to break the cycle, we would need a national- global even, mass exodus of twitter, fb, tiktok, reddit, yes even youtube so they are forced to improve or so people relearn perspective and human connection.
On the centrism point, i don't think there's a shortage of centrist voices, but even they are encouraged by algorithms to say extremist things to get attention good or bad. I don't think more middle of the road representation is the answer.

Conversely, there ARE a lot of centralist views and voices out there, but they get shouted down by extremist on both sides.
Tommy Lee Jones said it best in Men in Black; "A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky dangerous animals. You put a bunch of people together and you spook them, what you have is a mob. And a mob is only as smart as its dumbest member."

Trickle down; free trade for multinationals while ignoring workers; corporate Democrats going along with the Republicans’ tax cuts for the wealthy (camouflaged by some tax cuts for the middle); Obama’s bank bailout with no meaningful conditions - all have gutted the middle class. Per Meredith Whitney, 46% are doing well and are part of the 401k, investor class which is driving the economy. That leaves 54% who are barely making it, amidst never before seen wealth inequality. Trump is a symptom of a society that lost it’s way. (For example, we actually revere multi billionaires without seeing the danger they represent to democracy.) Unfortunately, Trump is an excellent con man and the ‘left behinds’ are his marks. Try addressing the 54% and their concerns before crowing about how well the 46% are doing in this economy. Then talk about how Biden, for the first time in decades, is actually trying to curb monopolies and fairly tax the Uber wealthy. Then, thank Bernie and Warren for helping Biden see the reality for too many Americans. Then maybe you can keep our democracy, despite the appeal of Middle Finger politics.

For the past 7,000 years, there has always been a struggle between the Nomads (Rural folk) and the City Builders (Urban folk). The Nomads are connected to the processes that are required for LIFE to happen. City Dwellers are connected to existential realities, that create demand for the Nomads productivity, and this provides Economic potential. Works great, until the City Dwellers begin to tell the Nomads, how to do the job...that they've been doing for thousands of years. These 2 worlds can only exist side by side; However, they CAN NOT exist as one and the same. There must be TOLERANCE, for the system to function. Nomads must be allowed to be...nomadic, and City Dwellers must be allowed to live existentially. This is why the Electoral College is so important. It provides Nomads the required political protection, against and ever increasing City population, and a shrinking Nomad population. Respecting this boundary is what makes us great, and not divided.

You’d think it works that way, but it doesn’t . He provides talking points for them and only reinforces their worldview . Also, shitting on the left is a REALLY dumb thing that a) diminishes his audience , and b) causes democrats to lose elections . So play with that fire but it will only burn you.

I must say, I'm the opposite of Maher on many points. But I do appreciate his concern for the polarized views in this nation and what a threat that is. Christ said that a house divided cannot stand. We have to start hearing one another before we tear each other apart. One of the things I liked about John McCain before his death was his willingness to cross the aisle.

Lincoln said „a house divided against itself cannot stand“
"A house divided against itself, cannot stand."
I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other.
Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new - North as well as South.“

This is true and wise. However, it's hard to compromise with people who won't listen to you, don't know anything about your situation yet have strong opinions about things you do which don't affect them or anybody, and actively tear down your humanity. E.g. you can't ask trans people to please be trans only where no one can see them, or ask black people to be satisfied that they're allowed to vote, and stop complaining that they still experience systemic racism.

@@Sarcasticron Yes, this is a democracy. Thankfully, not a theocracy. Though I'm a Christian, I don't support a union of church and state. We live under grace, not law. I believe it was Joshua in the old testament who said, "Choose you this day who you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Still, he said "choose" to the surrounding cultures.

@@Sarcasticron And btw, my youngest child who I love dearly is trans and an atheist. We don't see eye to eye on many points, but our love sustains us. I think it was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Who said, "I have decided to stick to love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." But I hear your concerns about others who use religion as a guide for their hatred and oppression. It's a real concern. And those people must be held accountable.

If you watched the Maher episode when Krystal Ball was on, the contrast between her nuanced and informed ideas about events contrasted sharply with Maher's simplistic and pandering opinions. Maher will complain about people who wear their face masks in their cars like it's a personal insult. I see people do this and I don't care because it will never affect anyone else. He complains about how many students protest like it's a national problem when it's much less than 1% of students who even protest. Repeat stories have shown that many of these protests have Jewish students in them and they overwhelmingly do not support Hamas, but he acts like they all do. They aren't passing laws that restrict people's rights, so to compare them to politicians who do is a false equivalency. Fareed pointed out 2 instances of Democratic presidents who did try to reach across the aisle repeatedly and Maher thinks that both sides are the same, when they are not.

"Students who went into class"? Got news for you, in the 60's if we weren't in class we were thrown out of school, period. And there were protests, but no such thing as a student strike because we understood we would be tossed. Most of the protest was about the Vietnam draft notices we were getting as seniors in high school.
