My husband and I have a similar story where he was able to comfortably come out to me because I came out to him first 🥰
I don't think he's necessarily bisexual (it would be perfectly fine if he was), I think he's gay but his wife is his exception. Sexuality is such a spectrum but I know of someone who's experienced this same thing and now that she's married to a man (who she loves with her whole heart and has a kid with) everyone tries to say that her being a lesbian was just a phase. But she says she'd be with a women if she wasn't with her husband, he's the only man she's been with and the only man she's ever been attracted to. Sexuality can just be tricky like that and it makes many people upset to see these situations because it means we don't all fit perfectly under different labels. Humans don't like ambiguity but the human experience is the epitome of ambiguous.

The women in the story about getting married and letting her niece wear whatever she wanted rocks. She invited her niece to be a bridesmaid for the sake of getting to know her. She obviously cares about her family and devloping a healthy relationship with her fiances family. But it also reflects so well on her character that she immediately recognized the niece feeling uncomfortable and put effort into supporting her. She just seems like a great person.

@@nackolas123 it's a tricky thing to navigate when step kids are involved. Whether people will outright admit it, step kids are often the cause of divorce in second marriages, be it directly or indirectly. He shouldn't leave all the burden on the mom by any means, but he's giving the daughter and family their space to grieve and accept him at their own pace. That's already miles better than most. A childs age, how close they were with the parents, disciplinary styles, etc. It's complicated either way. If it's genuine, it remains to be seen whether he did the right thing. Sometimes kids actually appreciate boundaries and rules that in the moment they despised. Seems to be working for them at the moment though.

I find it truly baffling where the older brother, who's taking care of his siblings, got his strength, maturity and moral conviction from. Clearly not from the parents or any other adults in their life. And the fact that OP is able to see the sacrifice shows extreme maturity too. I feel like this shows that we as humans don't come into the world as uncarved, blank blocks but that we're born with a personality and knowledge that, with very special people, can persevere even if they're born into incredible hardship.
I think some people use caring for others as a coping strategy. Protecting his siblings probably gave his pain a sense of meaning to him, and gave him a sense of control over the abuse. Plus, if he ever dealt with suicidal thoughts, knowing they depended on him would've helped him find a reason to keep living. I wouldn't be surprised if OP and her younger siblings helped him more than they know, by needing him to help them.
@@ettinakitten5047 That's a very good point! Heartbreaking but also... logical. I can totally see that being a part of it. It gave him goals and a motivation and something to focus on working towards.
A part of me also wonder if since it seems alcohol was a big part in the abuse, if the parents weren't always that bad and might have been more "themselves" when he was a small child so they managed to lay some early groundwork? But that might be way off.

As a trans man who grew up closeted as a “tomboy”, having someone side with me so I didn’t have to fight tooth and nail to keep my mom from forcing me into a dress at every fancy occasion would’ve meant *so* much to me. Shout out to that bride, she’s got the makings to be the best aunt.

Masc lesbian here and until about two years ago (i’m 35) my mum would still say I’d look nice in a dress or make comments like “why couldn’t you be into normal girl things” cause I know nothing about makeup but know heaps about motorbikes and cars. I’m so used to buying my clothes from the men’s section I genuinely get surprised or confused when someone says something about it as it’s just something I’ve done for such a long time. I still haven’t forgiven my sister for making me wear a dress to her wedding when I was 16, and I never will.
@@chevaryan2082 oh my god the "complimeting how I look good in fem clothes and/or give guilt-tripping questions" is so relatable to me! I'm a trans masc enby and my mom and female relatives always do these, it's annoying as hell! (I'm live in Asian household). Whenever I feel good in masc clothes, they wouldn't bat an eyes or throws the "why you wear this" comments. But the moment they see something feminine/ see me in something fem (ngl some girly pyjamas have such comfortable texture), they bombard me with compliments or say how good it would look on me. It's like they're desperately try to "save" my femininity in the indirect way because they know that saying it directly is ineffective as I'm quite of a stubborn person.
Wow. I’m literally going through this rn(I’m genderqueer). I don’t like dresses etc cuz it makes me uncomfortable and self conscious but I can’t explain that to my family cuz they’re so conservative. I have a special occasion coming up soon and my mother had been trying to get me to buy heels even though I said many times that I don’t want to because I’m afraid I’ll fall at the event(that’s just an excuse honestly). The second story about the talking to his wife's dead husband is so amazingly sweet. He's a good man and a far better father figure than he thinks. The amount of devotion to the family and to making sure people know the Dad existed is so beautiful.

That story reminds me of what my aunt said to my dad when he was a kid after he asked if he could wear sneakers to her wedding: "You can wear whatever you want as long as you're there!" Because that's what ACTUALLY matters - having your family there to celebrate the special day.

Thomas is on the queer/bi spectrum as well so I’m sure that story of the man and his wife really hit home for him. That story really was so beautiful. A label does matter PERSONALLY FOR ME as a lesbian. I get freedom in that label in the same way that people who don’t use labels get freedom. Sexuality is so confusing and heady. It’s all a beautiful personal experience. I love it all for everyone.

Labels are, by their very nature, restrictive. You don't just get to say a thing that's objectively false and incredibly harmful and then add a "PERSONALLY FOR ME" to try and remove any criticism against yourself for just being an awful person who thinks people should be limited to whatever classification they're forced to pick as a teenager

That one about the big brother who made sacrifices for the younger kids had me crying. I was the oldest drawing fire away from the littles and trying to shield them from the abuse. We're all out now but that story just brought up all those feelings.
For any other younger siblings like OP, I'll say this from the eldest's POV: We're so glad we were there to protect you. And in a lot of ways, you younger siblings saved us, too, because having you to focus on and love and plan a future for kept us from sinking into despair. It's saves us to focus on taking care of you. We love you so much and we want nothing more than for you to not experience what we did.
If you want to repay us...you really don't need to. Just love him, be a family with him, and most of all, go live a good life that's your own. That's what all this sacrifice was for--so you could be happy, and free.

The "I just realized my brother is amazing": Your brother having breakdowns and showing intense emotions is, unfortunately, part of processing trauma. Just keep being there for him and remind him that it won't be this intense forever. He did something amazing that not many people would do. I've never met him and my heart is so full because of him. Don't let him drown in those emotions because the world is way better with him in it.
On the labels discussion. That’s kinda why I love the term bisexual. To me it’s such a catch all term and so many things fall under that term and it’s helped me so much to figure out me and where I stand in my preferences. Also just the bi community are just the best people I’ve ever met. I’ve seen so much in fighting or arguing amongst portions of the queer community but Bi people just exist and let others exist. Love my fellow Bi Babes out there :)

I think because we've all had our own issues with acceptance, because we're not straight, but often can be ostracised from the queer community, especially if you're dating someone of the opposite sex so your relationship "looks straight".
Bisexual women get told we're faking it for attention and we're just straight, bisexual men are accused of just being gay and hiding it. So we're an accepting bunch bc we know how shit it is

I just want to say, Thomas, you expressing appreciation for this - without shaming the person for how long it took to communicate - is so meaningful to me. I struggle to bring up sensitive, vulnerable, and charged topics or feelings, and I feel extremely reassured that struggling with that is not abnormal, and that speaking in these situations is important and necessary even if it takes me a long time and a lot of emotional turmoil to do so. I've had different relationship situations where I was either encouraged for speaking because my partner knew how challenging it was for me, or berated for how long I took to bring something up and, by waiting so long, creating my own problems (different partner, now an ex). So I just want to say thank you so much for being one of the encouragers. It matters a lot. ❤️

That brother story broke me. The part that did it and no one really talked about is how he stopped crying, wiped his tears, and then asked how she was. That pure love and care, respect and humility, isn’t seen in a lot of people, he really has always put his siblings before himself, what a warrior.
I have no shame in saying I was crying by the end of that story.

Yeah, its so hard sometimes to fully describe my sexuality because its complicated. I always felt wrong for never really being able to label it. Even now its not entirely defined. I'm so glad his wife in the story was able to look past all the labels and understand that he loves and is attracted to her regardless of his other preferences.

Especially with gender, because it's been invented by us. You don't have to fit into a box, and nothing is binary ❤ Don't feel embarrassed because you learned more about yourself!

I really appreciate the comments you all made on the brother story. I was the older sibling in a similar situation, and never questioned protecting my younger siblings and sacrificing myself. My brother very recently expressed his gratitude for what I did and has started his own healing journey. Hearing this story from the other side kind of broke me. I never did it for my siblings’ gratitude, but it has been so impactful knowing he is and that I was able to do something right. Thank you all so much for this episode.
