    In the first story, the fact that the guys parents would mock him for peeing himself is probably a massive factor in him having a shy bladder in the first place. What monsters.

      There's also therapy for it that he could do to ease the symptoms. It's psychological more than physical (it's technically psychosomatic, so mental health impacting the body) so therapy could definitely help. I don't think his kind gf will be enough for him to fully treat it.

      yoo, fr. My mom screamed at me for "peeing my pants" and how i didn't "realize that i was peeing my pants". I was a scared 7-8 y/o and I also didn't understand what those weird "marks" in panties were; just knew that my mom screamed at them while telling me to stop peeing myself. While I finally reached the age where I had periods, I understood that it was pre-period flow. It was just that I had it really young; young enough that even my mom didn't realize what it was. It was probably due to hormonal meds I had to take for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. But I was literally so traumatized that I got a stress-UTI as a kid; from being afraid to pee.

      I came out to my dad by waiting for the chance to reference *NSYNC then singing “cuz it ain’t no lie, dad I’m bi, bi, bi!” My dad’s entire response was essentially “I can tease you about cute guys AND girls!? Yes!”
      When I told him I’m trans, he joked that he’d tried so hard to make me feminine by putting me in skirts all the time as a kid, but it clearly wasn’t meant to be.
      He also bought me my first binder and helped me measure to make sure I got the right size and, as soon as the order was in, turned to me and said “You’re on your own for a packer.”
      The entire lesbian daughter story made me think of my dad, lol. I love how he’s responded to me over the years.

    It is actually INSANE to not let a TWELVE YEAR OLD say the word “penis.” Like, at 12, I had gotten my period, had boobs, and thus had the biological ability to become pregnant. Like I needed to know what a penis was to fucking protect myself. Your kid needs to be able and allowed to talk about these things, or it leaves them vulnerable to being taken advantage of

    • @stephjovi
      @stephjovi 4 месяца назад +338

      Yeah it's crazy. At 12 they should start talking to her about how to avoid pregnancy and that she should feel OK with telling them of she wants to have sex to get birth control. Because ideally she won't do it for another couple of years but she wouldn't be the first 12 year old who gets pregnant. She's constantly online chances are she's seen a penis

  • @rougesunset

    The mom telling her kid never to say the word "penis" again is dangerous. Kids knowing proper anatomical terms is important for their own safety if they have to describe something they've witnessed or experienced.
    There's a big difference between "that fun fact isn't appropriate to tell to random people" vs "don't ever say that anatomical word"

    • @slsthewriter1299

      I never understand people being so stingy about medical terminology. Like. I would understand if it was a really, really vulgar saying. But… Penis… That- Doctors say that. That's how they communicate to you that your peepee has a problem. Or it's doing really well.

    • @yoyohayli
      @yoyohayli 4 месяца назад +130

      @LD-ck8gc It's tricky when kids disobey their parents specifically when the kid actually has better reasoning than the parent does. Like, is it good as a general rule to obey your parents? Sure. But parents can also be irrational and unreasonable. And kids can recognize that and disobey. So then it's like...what do you even do? The parebt would need to realize they are in the wrong...but that's hardly ever going to happen.

      I'm a little confused about the girlfriend and her being upset that the dad didn't "do more." My friends that are gay/lesbians just want to be treated like everyone else. Now I'm sure not everyone is like that, but you can either be "special" or "like everyone else." Her girlfriend's parents accepted the relationship and the dad purposely took time to get to know her and talk with her; so it just seems partly dumb, partly entitled to want him to throw a party for them instead. But I'm not gay, so maybe it's just something I can't understand without the experiences.

      @randomtology 3 месяца назад +3

      @@GeekExtremist I don't think they were looking for a *party* per say in this specific reddit post so much as more of an emotional heart-to-heart beyond "hey man that's cool". That said, I think you're confusing how gay people wanted treated in general (aka treat them like everyone else) with the big Coming Out moment. The act of Coming Out to your immediate family/closest friends is a Big Deal to LGBTAQ folks. In some sense, it's a Rite of Passage as you are in essence presenting your full true self to your nearest and dearest and hoping they will still love and accept you.
      Because of that, people will handle their Coming Out moment in wildly different ways. Some don't want to make it a big deal at all (that was me), some want to have an emotional heart-to-heart with crying and hugs, and some people will plan a whole ass party with a rainbow cake. I've even seen people write whole songs for it. There's no one right way to go about it, but it's not a surprise at all that someone would want more emotional weight attached to it.

    For the coming out story, a non-reaction is indeed cool and ideal but a simple acknowledgement like "Thank you for trusting us." can be amazing. Ignoring it can sometimes make some queer people feel bad because it was indeed hard for them to do this and acknowledging that goes a long way. This is coming from me, a queer guy whose dad had no reaction initially but then proceeded to scream at my mom it was her fault I was gay.

      It also depends who you're coming out to. Like if I'm telling someone I just met that I'm gay, I don't expect anything other than a "👍🏻" or the occasional slur. My parents however completely ignored my coming out and keep talking about me as if I'm straight, not to mention they donate to fighting LGBT so 😍

    I have a 5 year old little girl and have made a point to not make saying vagina or penis shameful words. Honestly using nicknames to me is so much worse!! I do make a point to be clear that these are body parts that are private and so talking about them in public or at school or with friends is not a polite thing to do. By the time she started taking she told my grandmother that, “mommy pushed me out of her vagina” and I laughed and said yes that is absolutely true but it was clear my grandmother was embarrassed but she got over it. Honestly, if you take the wedding aspect out of it, that is the sweetest song to want to use as a tribute and it almost made me cry. It's not strictly a love song, it's more of an "I miss you" song, but it does have the line "Oh darling I wish you were here" so I can see how it may not be the best choice for a wedding to someone else. Love that song, though, and it was awesome to hear it mentioned!
    The mom having a problem with the daughter even saying the word "penis" is like- I don't even know. Treating that like it's a dirty word, and undersharing with your kids about s*x is also really damaging. I don't know if it's equally damaging as oversharing, but it is definitely damaging and will create some whacked out views and shame about the subject in general. Just don't make a big deal out of it. I mean, yeah, saying you shouldn't necessarily repeat it in certain situations, but don't act like it's bad to talk about it at all. That's not good.

    While the mom is wrong for attaching a negative connotation to a proper medical term for a body part, Shayne's right about parents having to be in sync. Way too often you see fathers trying to 'undermine' the mother's parenting just to be the 'cool parent' and play besties with their kid, which in turn villainizes the mom. A father's role is first and foremost the parental role, which is a *team effort*.

      Yup, exactly. I 100% think the mom was wrong about the word "penis", but I'm not comfortable with a lot of these situations where dad is the fun parent and he and the daughter both bond over mom being less "fun" than them. It reminds me of this quote I think about often (because growing up I was also the daughter who found my dad way more fun and understanding, and my mom dour and boring): "Often father and daughter look down on mother (woman) together. They exchange meaningful glances when she misses a point. They agree that she is not bright as they are, cannot reason as they do. This collusion does not save the daughter from the mother’s fate."

      Idk where you're getting that one sided understanding from. Mothers are just as capable of undermining fathers in parenting and try to be the cool parent. Also, parental dynamics aren't always so mild. In fact, they're often much worse. Most parents just are not good parents. Many are verbally, physically, and/or emotionally abusive and manipulative with their kids, and many parents split because one or the other gets fed up with the abuse because they are on the receiving end too. A lot of parents also just want their children to be facsimiles of themselves and will do everything in their power to restrict their freedom and individuality, forcing them to have the same experiences and interests and beliefs they have. This is universal. It's not a gender thing. Many people are just not fit to be parents, and many people aren't compatible as parents.

    • @con1._.1artist
      @con1._.1artist 4 месяца назад +14

      If the parents need to be in sync why cant they be both on the fathers side? Why do they have to be on mom's side to be a united front? Also kids need to learn that their parents are both individuals that may have different views and beliefs. In my opinion, mum was in the wrong and this wasn't 'undermining' her. She needed to be shown her decision on how to handle the situation was wrong

And as a side note, the store I work at was in a very old building at the time (give or take 100 years or so), so rather than like, a Montreal steak spice, what you'd get is mostly 100 year old sawdust and some random person's bath water because the pipes from the apartments above the store leaked 😂😂😂

    Queer girl here who came out to her parents sort of unexpectedly and with no warning. They both accepted me pretty easily, Mom was hesitant at first, but more in the "I just never even considered this and just need a moment to process" deal, we're all cool, but my Dad also had basically no reaction like the OP of that story. While obviously I'm happy he accepted me so easily, I can say that the lack of reaction was also strange from him and it took me some time to actually know for sure if he was supportive or not. I obviously don't speak for every queer person, but my advice to any parents is that if your child does come out to you, the "no reaction" angle may not be the best. It doesn't need to be a dramatic song and dance since actually coming out is stressful enough, but clear and direct positive affirmation would go a long way

    • @baintreachas
      @baintreachas 4 месяца назад +51

      yeah it’s good to clarify “I’m good w you being gay” and not leaving things ambiguous. I know ppl who introduced their partners that way and the parents were nice… until it was over and they were like “we didn’t want to make things awkward, but never bring that person back”. Or “cool, as long as you get married to the right gender, later”. Or “it’s just a phase”. Or straight-up “I was so shocked by that I didn’t process it… now I’ve prayed on it, and you need help”. So I think saying, at some point, (maybe not w the partner there), clarifying that you’re not homophobic and you love and accept etc is a good idea

      i honestly don't remember my parents' reaction, but i remember my perternal grandparents' reaction. they told me they'd thought about how they'd react if their children came out, so they were already prepared (fucking awesome move imo). they were basically "that's cool. thanks for telling us." and that's my favourite reaction. i can tell the ideal reaction is different for everyone tbh. i much prefer the understated one, but i also understand that others want loved ones to make a bigger deal out it.

      @@TheodoreStagnum your grandparents totally had the right idea, and that response really hits the mark. • @austind.8108

      i think this is what bothered me about the response to that story because my impulse when hearing about how the father reacted was not one of like...heart-warming acceptance. eventually it became clear that the story was overall a good one, but i'm just not on the same page as ppl saying queer people just want to be treated like straight people. it feels like an impulse similar to that "i don't see color" philosophy. what we want is to be treated equally -- not that same, but as equals. that means acknowledging that we are constantly impacted by the potential of queerphobia -- from our families, at our jobs, in our relationships, in public. if you're accepting of your queer child, it needs to be communicated in no uncertain terms.

      I was home when I got mine. I was super scared when I saw the blood in my underwear and I cried for my mom. She calmed me down and immediately got me pads and showed me how to use them after getting me clean underwear. She even cuddled up with me on the couch and told me that I was going to be okay and told me that I started my period. Luckily my mom works for CVS and she knows what kind of medication works for it. She's currently on disability since she had a stroke right before Halloween, but she is recovering well. She is no longer working with her physical therapist and occupational therapist, but she is still working with her speech therapist. She can walk around, but she can't use our basement stairs. She and I had a day out Saturday with my aunt at the mall and she was completely fine the whole time. We stopped briefly to catch our breaths, but she was able to walk around the mall and through the parking lot without any complaints. She's also able to cook as well. She can't drive yet, but hopefully she will be able to soon.
