- A helicopter in a convoy carrying the Iranian president has been involved in an accident, state media is reporting.
It is currently unclear whether Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was on board the helicopter that state media say experienced a hard landing.
The Interior Minister said rescuers were still trying to reach the site due to the difficult weather conditions.

I like Iranians, my husband too travelled in a MI 17 helicopter from VladiVostok to Vostochny Port on the Eastern Bosphorous sea in Russia , was privileged to view and stay in the Russky Island suspension bridge from air on a helicopter and travelled to Russky Island via suspension bridge by road. Helicopter rides are scary for me. Hoping for the best for the Iranians .Solidarity with the Iranian people.

Iranians only build military helicopters similar to the US Apache. I think this was a civilian helo.
I’m more concerned about the welfare of a blade of grass after an ant walks on it than I am about anyone in Iranian government following a helicopter crash.
I have been a commercial helicopter pilot for over 40 years and in that time I ran an operation in Iran flying Bell 412 and 212 helicopters like the one in the photo. One of my jobs was to check the standards of the Iranian pilots for that operation. Most of the time I scheduled ex pat (UK,US and Canadian pilots) with Iranian pilots. Lets just say at that time (2006) some of the Iranian pilots were not up to western standards.Also the Bell helicopters there were under sanctions from America and new parts were difficult to source. If you add those two facts to bad weather flying,you have a recipe for disaster.My money is on pilot error in white out conditions (in cloud) followed by CFIT (Controlled flight into terrain).They hit the hard stuff at speed.

People questioning the safety of him using a helicopter, instead of an airliner like a 747. You're much more likely to survive a crash in a helicopter than you would in an 747. In some cases of engine failure a helicopter can auto-rotate to lessen the impact of a hard landing. Whereas a 747 is just going to come screaming down, gaining speed as it falls and impacts with a huge explosion! Airliners don't "glide" worth a damn!

i thought generally if a helicopter loses power it'll come down more gently than a plane...though come to think of it maybe that's only if it doesn't have too far to land. if it's really high up the rotor inertia can only last a limited amount of time. if there's a field or freeway the plain at a diagonal approach would be better..but with a mountain that seems bad no matter what kind of vehicle
