  • And your top tip this week is an oldie, but a goodie! At least it is if you have the option to do this.. which not everybody does (anyone who has made $10k in the last year gets automatically opted in).
    But if you're new to Etsy, make sure to turn off offsite ads if you don't want to be a part of it and be charged the hefty fee!

    I feel like etsy makes a killing from offsite ads because they pay google per click, but charge the sellers a flat percentage. I had a $300 sale and had to fork over $50 on top of all the other fees.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  Год назад +1

      It hurts. And the fact that many have no choice in whether they take part or not I find particularly problematic. But Etsy do want they want I guess. Do you have a website that you could sell your higher priced items on and keep more of the profit?

  • @Stall69UK

    Its worth noting that it isn't just 12%-15% of the sold item value. That percentage is applied to the total amount the customer pays. So that includes any sales tax and shipping. If you sell a low value item where the shipping is comparable to the sale value, you can easily lose money on those sales.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  Год назад +4

      Yup. You have to include the fee in your price to make sure it doesn't leave you making a loss but doing so can often price you out of your market and make you lose sales.
      I'm not a fan. 😉

      I sell someone where the product is the same price. I sell keychains and had my first sale, the price is about 3 dollars and the shipping is four, yeah after all the fees were taken out I made only 40 cents per sale even tho my “estimated profit” was a couple bucks

However, if it is something that is easily duplicated (e.g. reprints of your embroidery patterns) then 'every profit's a profit' irrespective of how many fees are being added on.

    I think the next question is what percentage of your total sales came from offsite ads that you wouldn't have had. How much additional revenue. How will it affect my sales and revenue after removing it? If a small percent of total sales is being taken advantage of but it also increases my number of sales , which is better. (I am against the 15%)

      To be honest, I do think that offsite ads have a place, and some sellers do like having them as an option to help get sales.
      It's the lack of transparency that I take issue with. Most Sellers don't even know they've been opted in until they get their first sale from them and see the fees. That's not right.
      Sellers need to be informed *before* being opted in and need to be able to make the choice themselves.
      And don't even get me started on the forced opt ins of higher earning sellers.

      If you turn them off Etsy won't promote your listings in offsite ads, that's all. It won't affect getting seen on the site (providing your seo is good etc).
      But if you're happy to pay the fee then there's no need to turn them off if you don't want to.
      Just know they're there and make sure you've factored the extra cost into your pricing.

As I'm still trying to build traction and gain social proof, and have no social following nor network (still working on driving my own traffic), I'm truly GRATEFUL for every sale that I make. Yes the 15% fee is a "put off" but I just adjust my pricing strategy to account for it and accept making lower margins on that sale. For me, as a New Seller, the Sale, the Review, and appeasing the Algorithm (Esty shows listings that SELL) is worth the 15% fee.

    Hey Kim.. I've had time for a re-think about this after checking my Etsy finances... my Opt-in marketing sales are only about 10% of my total sales a month on average.. and if I give Etsy the full benefit of the doubt that those sales could only have been made through their own off-site marketing... that generated me 10% extra sales that I wouldn't have made. Even though the charges were far higher than I was expecting... my margin is high enough to still return me a profit from a sale I wouldn't have had otherwise. Also...having more eyes on your products can eventually lead to returning customers and getting seen outside could still lead to more followers over time and sales made directly from your shop. So... it isn't as bad as I thought, I just freaked out when I 1st noticed I was charged a ton of money more than I was expecting from a recent sale.. and now can see this is not often the case my items sell from outside of my own shop. I've opted back in for that reason.

    I use offsite adds, and, drum role.... like them. One shop has no choice, the other does and I chose to participate. My third shop does not participate. But it is based on what you sell. I sell vintage in the 2 participating shops. Because there isn't an item that repeats once sold it is harder to make the most of Etsy promos etc. So having offsite ads has meant the difference of 1/3 to even 1/2 more sales (depending on season). Yes, I pay more but as it garners me more sales it is worth it. It is the difference between a more rollercoaster income and a slightly more level income. (Note, my 3rd shop sells digital downloads and so can repeat, so I do not use the ads.)

      You've hit the nail on the head with it being dependent on what you sell. And to be honest, my issue isn't with the ads as they're just another tool in the Etsy toolbox.
      It's the lack of transparency and the fact that so many sellers don't know that they are a) automatically opted in or b) that they can even opt out if below the threshold.
      But I totally get what you're saying about them making the difference between random sales or decent, regular sales. They definitely have their place for sure. 👍

    I don't sell on Etsy but has anyone figured out how to remove the 'Our Top Picks For You' feature?
    Or been successful at actually being able to contact support on Etsy regarding this feature? Their Help Center is a waste of time.
    But recently, I've been getting some crude suggestions from Etsy with nudity and other disgusting items. I've never once clicked on anything like these items that are being suggested nor bought anything like them.
    Any help? I buy a lot on Etsy and I'm ready to just delete my account.

      You can't unfortunately. I'm also seeing weirdness on my Etsy homepage with regards to recommendations and such although no mature items this time thankfully. 😄
      It does happen though and is usually a sign that they've been tinkering with something in the background.

    Are they calculating $10000 in the last 365 days or last year?

      Etsy's help pages currently quote;
      "The ability to opt-out of Offsite Ads depends on your shop’s sales in the last 365 days.."

    Offsite Ads have brought me $242 in sales in the last 30 days and the fees was $29. What's there not to like?

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  6 месяцев назад +1

      By your math that $29 accounts for the 12% offsite ad fee. What about the other miscellaneous Etsy fees that are on top? And I'll assume that you're referring to digital products otherwise, you'll also have material costs, postage etc to take off before you get to your profit.
      And that's before we've got on to the subject of the lack of transparency.
      So respectfully, while I'm glad they're working out for you, theres a lot not to love. 😊

    Etsy nickle and diming everyone with no legit proof their ads were the reason for your sales is bogus. I was losing a lot of money for no reason. On top of being a new seller whose money is already on hold.

    It is not just 15% fee, if you live in Europe EU you will have to add up to 27% in VAT to your fees as well (if you are a private seller). You are loosing money big time.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yup, but Etsy don't give two hoots about the sales tax a seller has to payon top.
      As far as they're concerned, it's up to the seller to factor those in, and as they're not an Etsy fee, they can conveniently forget about them when they talk about the fees. 🙄

    I turned off the offside adds , forgot i did , my sales dropped almost to zero and i was trying like crazy to figure out what i was doing wrong 😂😂😂 It costs too much but probably thats the only way for me to have sales. I think the only way to work if you turn off the offside adds is stronge social media so you can drive your own traffic. DAMN THATS EXPENSIVE !!

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  Год назад

      This is why it's so important to build a community around your business so that you don't have to rely on paid ads to drive sales.
      They should help lift your shop, not carry it. Have you tried selling elsewhere as well as Etsy?

    • @KimBliss

      Short term if you are just starting out? Sure. But once you're more established you do actually want to make some money and keep your business viable. Many have found that they actually make a loss with Etsy offsite ads, hence them being so unpopular. People often mistake how the percentage is actually calculated and how much they end up taking away after the ads. It's not great.
