    Video Summary:
    Optimism is a hopeful outlook for the future. A person's degree of optimism is a critical determinant of an their success, according to the research of Dr. Martin Seligman.
    Dr Seligman found differences in how optimists and pessimists explain identical events, using his three categories of explanatory style: permanence, pervasiveness, and personalization. Permanence identifies whether the event is one that will be long-lasting or transitory. Pervasiveness identifies whether the event is limited or global to the individual's life. Personalization identifies whether the individual assumes responsibility for the event, or attributes it to other factors.
    Optimists are more likely to find their problems to be temporary, limited, and not of their making. Pessimists, on the other hand, are more likely to think their problems are permanent, wide-ranging and preventable. Obviously it's more pleasant to be an optimist than a pessimist.
    You can choose to be more optimistic. Periodically make a substantial but detailed list of up to thirty things to which you look forward. Or, make a shorter list every morning of the highlights you foresee in your day. Your level of optimism will likely improve through this simple but effective exercise.

      No labels. Get in practice. You will be well practiced... stay consistent and that will be amazing.

    Explanatory Styles:
    1. Permanence -- seeing the limited nature of an occurrence is central to optimism
    2. Pervasiveness -- how much it affects every aspect of your life
    3. Personalization -- optimist takes credit for good things; pessimist blames self for so much, and is "humble" and acts like good things are not because of himself/herself

    Even though I'm in a pretty terrible place of negativity, I'm watching these videos about overcoming negativity and unforgiveness, and I find myself feeling afraid of them working, even though Im desperate for them to work. Annoying paradox. I guess this is like a first step. Recognizing that I'm hanging onto my depressive state because scared shitless of what happens if these videos work for me. I'm afraid of realizing how many years I've wasted on thinking this negative way. Damn, this is hard.

      It's because the brain is wired like that, being afraid of Everything kept our ancestors alive.
      BUT, we live in different times now. Being afraid is what kills us these days - so just embrace the optimism and kill the negativity before it kills you.

    Hi Leo, I'm 23, and only now have I understood the meaning of a pessimistic approach.
    Now I see how my pessimistic attitude is effecting me and ruining every opportunity I could take.
    When I got to the middle of the exercise, I realized that today I'm getting out of the prison I built for myself.
    thank you.

    Why is it that we belive so strongly that when "bad things" happen to us that the most logical thing to do is to react negativly to it. How does getting angry or pessimistic about a car breaking down have any corrolation with that actual situation. Were we born to think this way or is our society so fucked up that these thought patterns got programed into us?

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  9 лет назад +25

      It's the easiest thing for your brain to do. Your brain's job is to keep you alive, not to keep you happy or thriving. So your brain is naturally defensive and conservative and petty.

      I think that quite honestly our society plays toward being negative.
      Negative is all over. It's especially prevalent in the world of politics, where political canidates do everything they can to muddy their opponents image, so they can get elected.
      Our media is also saturated with negativity. From the Television shows and the movies we watch, to just the local news.
      The interest t is also a great source of negativity. People always complain about their problems on websites like Facebook, Twitter, RUclips, and etc.

Videos like "How to Control Your Emotions", and some of your older videos about dealing with fear when you were in the park in Las Vegas (about when you were breaking down with your coach what the rooted values are of what stuck you from moving), and another about the values you put to things (like for example, what i took from it was instead of thinking "fuck.. i gotta cut another green (on the golf course)", i changed that to "i make 10 dollars every single cut, multiplied by the experience practice and learning i do by doing one more line and better learn how to mix my old boxing stance weight transference style, and the more i do it, the easier it gets to let my subconscious do the work: but don't alter a process untill i recieve new insights or have extra creative energy to use."

    I've been extremely anxiety ridden for the last 2 years. I don't sleep at night because of this. Optimism is the only way out of the mess I find myself it. I see no other way. These lists of 30 exciting things get you only so far, when you have trauma and deep seated anxiety. Anyway, I think I am going to be extremely aware of my thoughts, and replace each negative one with an extremely positive one. And keep doing it. Activate the optimistic neurological pathway of the brain, and somehow make it the default one. Not sure what else to do. Who is with me?

    I've watched several of your videos. I've realized that this is KEY for me. Everything in my life that I worry about stems from me thinking things aren't gonna go my way. I've been dealing with a health problem over the past 2 months, and all of my friends keep telling me not to worry and it will get better. As much as I tell myself to believe that, I still fall back into worrying it's not and how it's going to affect the rest of my life. I've made the decision to move back to my home state after about 10 years of trying to make it as a singer/songwriter in Nashville. I guess I'm afraid the perfect opportunity may arise if I had just given things 6 more months or 1 more year in Nashville. Not sure you have a video for this, but I think a good topic might be, "When to Stick it Out or Cut & Run?" I feel like I'm completely uprooting my life to move back home to take care of myself, but I have been unhappy in Nashville for a long time because I'm so far away from my family support system, and I'm single. I just keep telling myself that if I stay here long enough, an opportunity or a relationship will present itself. But because of this health problem, I've pretty much let these circumstances make the decision for me to move back home, so I can hopefully get better. The thing is...I feel like I should stay in my home state because of how much emotional stress I've been under throughout the years from being so far away with no family nearby. I'm just afraid I'm gonna regret leaving Nashville, instead of thinking optimistically about all the possibilities that are out there on this new path. I was just thinking this is probably similar to people who have invested time into a marriage or long term relationship that is a constant struggle, or even business owners that are losing tons of money, and they have to decide if they're going to liquidate or try a different short term strategy. How should a person decide between sticking something out or deciding to cut and run without being full of regret?

    Most of me being pessimistic is my future with my boyfriend. I'm always thinking the worst in situations, he's moving and we won't get to see each other as much. He tries so hard to keep me from being pessimistic, but it's really hard. This video did help a bit, I'm just tired of being so pessimistic all the time, it's not a good color on me. I also tend to put myself in pessimistic situations that aren't good or healthy for me. It's like an addiction and I can't draw myself away.

    SUMMARY - Actualized - Optimism
    Optimism is important for success because it gives you persistance
    You cant be unsuccessful if you are super persistent
    How many things are you not trying because you think they dont work for you?
    Optimism also makes you feel better.
    Optimism is a hopeful outlook for the future. Bad outlook makes you afraid and depressed.
    Optimistic people give happenings different meanings
    Three types of explenation
    Permanence - how permanent is the problem? Will the problem last forever?
    For the pessimist the problem seems permanent
    If you see a problem as permanent you dont do anything against it
    The optimist sees the problem as little happening in his life
    Pervasiveness - the optimist sees that there is only a little part of his life effected by the issue
    For the pessimist the issue spreads over his whole life like cancer
    Personalization - the optimism says that he is not reaponsible for bad things but sees good things that happen as his work.
    This makes you want to go out and achieve things
    The pessimist blames himself for bad things and is humbling good things
    How optimistic arw you about your future? How excites are you about the next month, year, decade?
    Exercise: optimism can be stoked ufp.
    Take your journal and write down thirty things that you are most excited about in the next you gonna do. Things that motivate you.
    Notice how you feel while the exercise and aferwards.
    Do this exercise once a week.
    You can do the exercise in the morning about what you are excited today.
    Thanks Leo

    Social displays of optimism are a ‘latent functional’ ruse. Persistence is not always motivated by ‘positive expectations’ regarding efficacy. One can be hopelessly pessimistic, but hopelessly inquisitive.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 лет назад +1

      Being pessimistic feels like crap and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy effect. The deep question you gotta ask yourself is: Why do you insist on making yourself feel bad about the future?

    • @modvs1
      @modvs1 10 лет назад

      Actualized.org Having lower expectations is a strategy for avoiding disappointment and increasing the opportunity for surprise; and there is a darker side to optimism you might not be considering. Convincing social displays of optimism can be used as a means to deception. Given that optimism is routinely associated with success, efficacy and agency, one can seduce others into ‘parting with resources’ in a bid to win your friendship and gain access to your supposed prowesses, when in fact you may not possess any to begin with. Think of the so called “charisma” that an evangelical minister displays. Its essentially a stratagem to get people to hand over money in exchange for what is ultimately useless information. Salesmen often deploy this ‘dirty little’ capacity. And I can’t back this up right now, but I’m sure I’ve heard that pessimists are better at detecting mendacity in others.

    I just recently read that book, it was 300 pages and about 270 of them were Seligman talking about how great he is because he "disproved" some behaviorist theories and shocked a bunch of dogs. 30 pages were dedicated to the actual technique, which doesn't work for me at all. Hopefully it works for someone, but I'm not very optimistic about that...

      Bullshit, you're just not trying hard enough.

      Actualized.org I did try, every time I worked on those silly ABCs I started to have panic attacks. It's wonderful if it actually works for some people, but to say it will work for EVERYONE is the true bullshit. Good advice though, "if what I say doesn't work for you, you must not be trying hard enough".
      I've been trying to be more positive, so I think I need to stop watching the useless self-help videos; they don't ever help and really just make me more miserable. Of course, I'm barely hanging on as it is and if I quit trying I'd probably be dead within a week's time. I'll keep looking for a method that works, but it's extremely difficult for me to be positive or optimistic about anything.

      @ActualizedOrg  10 лет назад +3

      EvilReptiles You're getting panic attacks from doing a simple positivity exercise? And you think that's the exercise's fault? Step back for a second and admire the sheer ridiculousness of this.
      Your comments above are just your toxic negativity talking. The fact is that these techniques for EVERYONE because we are all running the same hardware deep down. What's happening with you on this issue is that you're having panic attacks exactly BECAUSE it's working! That's called resistance and homeostasis. Your mind will resist new techniques that are good for it and concoct bullshit excuses just to keep you stuck in place because this is where you feel safe. The problem isn't the technique, the problem is your ego and your laziness. If you really want to improve, stop the bullshit and do the exercises are instructed, despite your panic attacks or whatever other nonsense distractions your mind creates.
      And the book is brilliant. You are just demonizing it to distract from looking at your own deeper issues.

      Actualized.org
      I realize that I'm the one causing the panic, I'm not blaming the exercise but I don't know how to stop the obsessive negative thoughts. I don't believe my own disputations.
      Saying that it will work for everyone is just as arrogant as the behaviorist fanboys that Seligman claims to have disproved. I can't do the exercises when I'm having a panic attack because my hands start to shake so badly I can't write; it's pretty difficult to do them when you're overwhelmed by not being able to breathe.
      Saying the book is brilliant is just an opinion, much like my saying that it's ineffective.

      I realize how awful I'm being here, so I'm going to apologize to anyone reading this. I get nasty after I wake up having a panic attack, this really isn't the place to get into it though. I still don't find the techniques in Learned Optimism to be effective, but I know some people will, so I think I should stop spreading my misery around. Best of luck to everyone on the subject of gaining optimism, it really is important; hopefully one day I'll figure it out. Hope is probably optimistic, so there I go, I may be at least partially on the right track ;)

    great thoughts. great video. The biggest obstacle for me, to remaining positive & optimistic, are the things that happen that make me question my decision to remain positive. I feel like most of the times, when I decide to keep a positive outlook, something happens that screws up my mood. I feel like i'm being tested. How do i deal with that?

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 лет назад +1

      You are giving your power away to the situation. Mood is not just something that happens to you randomly. Mood can be consciously decided upon and enforced. Your thoughts ARE your mood. So you just gotta force yourself to be positive. Mindfulness is a good tool for dis-identifying yourself from your thoughts and emotions.

    I just want to be happy. I want to feel good and look at the positive side of life. But my mind keeps thinking thoughts I don't want to think but I can't help it. I think suicidal thoughts and I try to switch the subject on my brain, it's actually a challenge to think positive thoughts. And waking up everyday and being in the environment I'm in does not help. I'm still stuck and it seems like there is no way out no matter how hard I try. My sadness is effecting my grades now, then I get really stressed because I know my parents are going to yell at me. And I live out in the country so I have no one to talk to, and my video games are the only communication I have with people. My stress keeps balling up and my grades and attitude are at a all time low, and every day it gets worse and worse no matter how hard I try to enjoy things.

  • @charlesfraunhofer7893

    I used to think any problem wasn't permanent, I was born an optimist, and it was all about sunshine, and it took until my early twenties to 37 years to become a pessimist. If you're too optimistic your life was already perfect and you'll never need a drink again, it's best to be a pessimist because those who see the bad in things are the ones doing good against the danger, the optimists are focusing on the good in any evil and don't have moral principles against them, even though optimists try to solve the problem, have you had forced medication? Try being optimistic about that, it's not going to work, you're only going to feel worse, I'm happier being a pessimist. And the problem is permanent, it starts off bad for several years and stops, leading to an equally bad situation, and a different bad situation will keep occurring till the end of time, there's never a permanently perfect moment, if you think simplistic problems are solved by avoiding a single situation, beware when it comes back, your happiness won't last, it's not that simple, it's very complicated. Expect not to have any fulfilling happiness, because that's the only happiness you've got. :)

    At 9:47, what if the optimist was on his way to pick up a winning lottery ticket worth $50 million and was required to be there no later than 8:00 am and he suddenly got a flat tire in the middle of rush hour and had only 15 minutes to reach his destination. So what impact will that flat tire have on his life? Sometimes, even things that are normally insignificant in life can under different circumstances have a huge impact.

    I just love your videos and exercises. I've tried a few of them and found that I've become more positive. However, I do have just one question...how do you combat the "dead" feeling on the inside when you're trying to be more optimistic? I've had A LOT of traumatic, life-changing events and I'll try to think of something to cheer me up and nothing.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  9 лет назад +8

      You have to realize that your mind lies to you all the time. You think you have an accurate negative understanding of life, and that the positive perspective is fake. But actually you are in NO position whatsoever to make this judgment. It's like asking a drunk judge to make a fair judgment against himself. He's in no position to do that because he's biased. So are you. You are drunk with negativity. You have to start to look for evidence of this negative bias in your everyday experience. You'll find it if you look carefully. Then the positive perspective won't seem so farfetched.
