Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world. The drummer, Terry Williams, was on fire and even Knopfler was surprised. Terry is now 75 and retired in Wales. This is widely considered one of the best live performances, ever.

It's funny that they totally butcher the song from the studio version, but they really know how to butcher a song the right way. But to know how creative this is you have to know the studio.

Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.

Some of the best 10 minutes on RUclips. A fantastic band with Terry Williams just KILLING it on drums - he pushed them hard, and you can see Knopfler looking back and laughing like hes saying "We'd better pick it up boys!" and man do they ever. Knopfler is SUCH a phenomenonal guitarist - slinky fast, fluid, and emotional. Never hits a bad note.

It's subjective but I feel the 1985 tour, concerts and band were the pinnacle, as shown in the Wembley and Sydney concert videos on here, but i'm probably biased as I saw them in Birmingham a couple of weeks after the wembley shows. It has to be said though that this was when bands wern't afraid of work, and before a "residency" was a thing. Some really big name bands, most recently Bon Jovi and Greenday say they are doing a UK tour and play 2 stadium dates for the whole country, playing to maybe 60000 at each. On the Brothers in Arms tour Dire Straits played something like 13 nights at wembley, 9 at NEC Birmingham as well as quite a few other arenas in the country, and did this in most of the countries they played, when they got to the end of the run they went back to the beginning and started again, the tour lasted 2 years if memory serves.

Can't go wrong with any performance from the Alchemy album - they're all cast iron bangers. Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, and Going Home, which they used to close the concert out are all highlights. Like many of Knopfler's songs it tells a story, about going into a London pub one evening and finding a band playing. The drummer's name is Terry Williams, he absolutely knocked the whole concert out of the park. He was with them for the 85 tour too.

I stood in the front row in 1985. Money for nothing tour. Close enough I could talk to Mark. It was amazing. One of my favorite concerts.

I was fortunate enough to see them live back in the same days as this video. They were new on the scene, yet they were well established. Probably because of their awesome MTV Videos that were already out at the time. One of the BEST live performances I've ever seen in person.

Posting here in April 2024 - Mark Knopfler (red jacket and headband) is 74 years old and still working. He released his latest album this month, and he owns a recording studio in London. He has retired from touring, but he's still composing and recording.

You'd have loved seeing them live in person... Live their music always differed from the actual albums with more content but tell ya' what... They get the place JUMPIN! The band had such range of music concerts were funny in that you could tell the standard "rockers" as they'd be in their seats rockin' out... Yet those without as much inhibition who loved the pop/rock stylings be up and dancin' it up. SO MUCH FUN! I'd be havin' ya dancin' it up Kathy!

I really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing!
    My dire straight story.
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Wonderful reaction. ( so happy )Well said Donna, ''happiness is the meaning of life the whole aim and end of human existence' said the wise man. When you work with commercial bands it is important to have some expansion playing live. You have far more freedom to explore, the ultimate being blues and jazz. So here Mark and the Band can have some sophisticated fun while maintaining that pop appeal. When people love what they do it becomes infectious and results in the duty free gift for the listener.😎

    Two things!
#1- Live performances are important…BUT…I must insist that your first reaction(s) to a band/song really need to be the studio/single/album version of a song first. It’s much easier to hear the musicianship and vocals and lyrics much more than a live video!
#2- I hope you gals know full well when I say things like “Big Mama” it’s a term of love and total 100% respect! 😁
    Love ya’ll. Keep on!

Funfact, dear Ladies, Yes you too Lady Lulu, The drummer´s dad was in the audience for the first time. The drummer got enthusiastic and a tick too fast, (Matk Knopfler and the bass guitarist joked about it). I think the drummer´s dad was realy impressed.
You dear and lovely ladies have a safe and pleasant year.
