They were all young at this performance but already great musicians for the time. Ian Gillan on vocals along with Ritchie Blackmore on guitars and Roger Glover on bass was 25 at the time. Ian Paice on drums was 22 years old. And the "old" guy was the magical (R.I.P) John Lord on hammond organ who was 29 at the time.

Ian Gillan (vocals) of Deep Purple: "... it’s the influences that each individual member brought into the original band that gave Deep Purple its variety. You know, we cover everything from big band, to swing music, to rock music, and there’s a lot of humor in our music along with light-hearted touches. There’s a lot of texture and dynamics, which are essential to our music. That’s important, and it’s why we get so much joy from what we’re playing. When you’ve got a diet with as much variety as that, you don’t get fed up with it it. There’s always something unique to keep you interested."

Since certain viewers are seemingly having trouble with the spelling of certain member's names, these are the correct spellings.
Ian Gillan (not Gillian) - vocals. Ritchie Blackmore (not Richie) - guitar. Jon Lord (not John) - organ (1941-2012 - oh! The unrivaled master of his craft).
So far, I didn't read anybody misspelling Roger Glover (bass) or Ian Paice (drums), but for clarity: there they are also.

Adult audiences were expected to behave in those day, especially if the performance was being recorded or filmed. Making noise and being loud was seen as disrespectful to both the performers and other audience members. Think of classical music, jazz and night club singer performances, silence was key. Teenagers were different, like those seeing acts like Elvis or The Beatles. You can check out many performances from the era where the audience is silent. This of course changed with the emergence and evolution of Rock & Roll.

This is the Mark II (Two not Eleven) version of Deep Purple, in my opinion the best version, and the version I have seen three times live. But to me the most amazing part of this video is... the reaction of the audience. Crickets. Ian Gillan-Vocals, Ritchie Blackmore-Guitar, Roger Glover-Bass, Jon Lord-Organ and Ian Paice-Drums. For another take on Ian Gillan, check out his performance as the voice of Jesus in the original recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Andrew Lloyd Weber. This is an artistic recommendation, not a religious one.

I am also 66 and also bought this when I was about 11 or 12, but it wasn't my first album, Led Zeppelin had that honour. Both incredible bands, but while I have always loved Deep Purple, I have to say, I still prefer Led Zeppelin overall, but its a close thing. I do however rate Ian Gillan as my favourite rock vocalist of all time, and as a fellow vocalist myself, having fronted both rock and blues amateur bands since I was 16, I believe I do know something about it. And this does rate as one of the very best songs ever, along with Stairway to Heaven.

I love the time in history that I came up in. Because of my mom and my dad's youngest siblings, I was a very young kid to absolutely fall in love with all these bands. This Led zeppelin, Black Sabath, and so on and so on, etc. Experimental and so many different directions. The best musicians ever to create music.❤

My son took me to see Deep Purple in concert for my 62nd birthday in 2017. I had missed them in 1975 because their stage collapsed while setting up and they cancelled. I almost think my son, who was 32 at the time, enjoyed it as much as I did! Alice Cooper and Edgar on the same bill. Great show! Oh, and try driving to "Highway Star" without getting a speeding ticket!

Another great Deep Purple performance would be most definitely the live performance of the song “Burn” at the California Jam. The Deep Purple line up at that time featured Glenn Hughes & David Coverdale along with Jon Lord the organist, Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist and Ian Paice on the drums. This is truly an awesome performance.

3 tracks off Made in Japan you should check out..
1, Lazy - just an awesome jam!
2, The Mule - a song most people don't know. Vastly underrated. Also contains Ian Paice's 10 minute drum solo!
3, Strange Kind of Woman - another awesome jam highlighted by Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan "dueling".. Ritchie on Guitar and Ian with his voice!
Also... just before The Mule, if you listen close you can hear Ritchie Blackmore say to the sound board guy "Could you make everything louder than everything else?"

Still their Live album Made in Japan is my favorite album. Great songs on this album. This song, The Mule (great drum solo) and Lazy (crazy solo on the organ) . Other songs are Highway Star,
Smoke on the Water, Strange Kind of Woman and Space Truckin. Roger Clover from this band also made the single Love is All ( he is the singing frog). Ian Gillan has a great voice.

The live version, highway star, is awesome too!! I saw deep purple twice on the perfect strangers tour, 1984/1985. The loudest concerts I have ever been too!! Between the organ, lead guitar, and Ian's screaming, your ears were TOAST!!! Robert Plant used to call Ian Gilliam a screamer, as an insult, but Ian is a better singer than Plant (who I also like). A lot of jeaulosy between performers. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin guitarist), admitted that he couldn't keep up with Blackmore on freestyle solos. Blackmore is one of the best ever.

The album version obviously doesn't compare to this 1970 live version. Ian Gillan is one of my favorite singers for sure. Deep Purple just released a new video called "Portable Door" y'all should check it out.
