Tony Iommi, the guitarist worked in a metal fabriicatiom factory. On his last day after quiting to play music full time he was asked to fill in on a machine had never used. It was a steel cutting machine. He had an accident and cut off his two middle fingers close to the first knucle. Instead of giving up, he melted plastic to make new fingr tips. He tuned the guitar lower to make it easier to play, which created a dirtier heaver sound.

Tony Iommi (the guitarist with floofy hair lol) chopped off the tips of his fretting fingers in a sheet metal accident and made finger protectors to allow him to play. Unfortunately even with protectors it was too painful to play. To overcome the pain he slackened the strings which made a deeper sound and heavy metal music was born. You can clearly see the finger protectors in this video.

This is from their legendary concert in Paris (1970). Before "Heavy Metal" became the universally accepted term for this kind of music, bands like Sabbath were described variously as "Downer Rock" and "Atomic Blues". These are the album lyrics, a bit different than the live version here.
    War Pigs lyrics - studio
    Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
    Evil minds that plot destruction
    Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
    Death and hatred to mankind
    Poisoning their brainwashed minds
    Oh lord, yeah!
    Politicians hide themselves away
    They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
    Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
    Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
    Begging mercy for their sins
    Satan laughing, spreads his wings
    Oh lord, yeah!

People think they are dark because of their lyrics. But they sing from the dark to put a light on it.
Them crosses aren't to mock. Ozzy to his last gig ended by saying God bless you all... and it was heart felt.
Men of faith rather than religion.
They have a song called NIB. About when the devil falls in love. But the devil only loves the devil. It's a warning not to be tempted away from those who love you unconditionally

I thought so too the first time.... Someone mentioned in the comments that they were still working out the lyrics at the time of this show.
They changed the lyrics 7 times before settling on what they are now.

The visual and audio recording of this concert is amazing for 1970.
And like everyone else commented, the BILL WARD.

I was fortunate to see Black Sabbath on their first US tour at Bayfront Arena in St Petersburg,Fla. they weren’t very well known and being a general admission concert I was able to stand right at the stage edge. One of the best early 70’s concerts I’ve seen.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I was 16 years old in , 1971, I saw them on their first US. tour in Charleston, W.Va.. I was blown away!. Then I saw them in D. C. ... on their Last tour. I've love them and their style of Metal music. Now, I'm from the hills of West Virginia and I live 1/2 miles from Devil Anse Hatfield's grave. Now yall need to set back kick your shoes off and listen Sabbath's 2nd and 3rd album. Very awesome. God bless, HAPPY NEW YEAR !

One of rock's most important songs of all time. One of the first heavy metal songs by the (imo) originators of the genre, and one of the best anti-war songs of all time. And those drums!
This performance was recorded before the band had finished the lyrics, and they are quite different on the album version. Adding the song to a playlist of All Time Greatest Songs and ensuring it's always a part of your life forever is recommended. If ever a song was worthy of such a thing it's this one.

I recommend you guys the following songs:
    1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    2. Black Sabbath - black Sabbath
    3. The Wizard
    4. Iton Man - this was the title song for the Iron Man movie
    5. Planet Caravan
    6. Electric Funeral
and many more classics. I grew up listening to their songs from the 1970s and am still listening to them in 2024. Im now 63 years young. I have the whole collection of their vinyl LPs.

Fun fact: You can exchange the music between 'War Pigs' and 'Deck the Halls'. RUclips has a couple of videos by Aaron Gage where he swaps them. Just think, heavy metal with Christmas lyrics!

They recorded this album in about 2 days. Their first album was recorded in 12 hours. They played live so often that they were basically good enough to record live.

Bill Ward is soooooo underrated. He also reminds me of the drummer for the Muppets lol. Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath in 78 or 79.

David Frinfrock! LOL! Harold Taft was the DFW weather guru when I lived in Dallas! I saw Black Sabbath In Memphis, TN, 1977. They were still the original 4 members, but sometime in the 1980's, Ozzy went solo, & Ronnie James Dio replaced Ozzy.

Yes, Harold Taft was the greatest, but David Frinfrock took over when Harold retired.
