Calling Ozzy a "little pitchy" is like saying that fire is a bit warm, or that water is a little damp. It's kinda his calling card.
I mean, I enjoy Maggie's reactions and all, but being snooty about intonation when analyzing global fame....kinda off putting. Obviously did something right if he's well known. If music has a message, or passion, a little out of tune, especially on a stage loud enough to render in-ears less effective, in the 80s..cut some slack.

Did she question Ozzy's fame or his appeal? Or did you take her simple observation as a personal insult, and then rush to Ozzy's defense like Will Smith rampaging across an Oscar stage?

She was saying "sharp", etc., but that to me is just how the song sounds. They wrote it, performed it originally, own it. And they owned it in this performance. This is what it is supposed to sound like. If someone were to sing it less 'sharp' at those points, I'd probably say they should go listen to Ozzy again and do it better next time. That's just my take. But I get it. Different strokes for different folks.
Bill Ward was a monster on the drums, shame he couldn`t do the last show ever.
Bill Ward is a drumming God. Geezer is a poet, Tony is the riff master and Ozzy is Ozzy with the older higher notes.

I think Bill, John Bonham and Ian Paice are just phenomenal drummers! People always say Bonham’s better … I think theyre pretty even, just different strengths. Bonham’s major point over the others is his power. Otherwise, his chops aren’t really that much better than Ward’s and certainly not better than Paice’s.
Whichever one is better, just depends on which I happen to be listening to lol

This is an anti-war song. Originally War pigs was supposed to be the name of the album. They switched it to Paranoid on the insistence of the record company. This album was released during the Vietnam war.
Originally the song was a bit darker
It was called Walpurgis
It was about the occult, witches
And satan rising from the depths of hell after being summoned by sinners, they realize that they made a big mistake and beg a priest for help only for the priest to be cast into hell by Satan Himself
They were forced to change the song and they turned it into warpigs
If only people had listened then, maybe we wouldn't be at the mercy of the War Pigs that exist today.

Yes, that is indeed THE Ozzy Osbourne. He's never been accused of being a "good" singer, but he IS very distinctive and his voice did match well with the music.🤘😎
I'd take Ozzy over Bruce Dickinson or Dio any day.

You have never heard a man hit a set of drums with such ferocity and make it sound so damn good before, it makes this song a true masterpiece!
Ozzy's voice is probably the most unique in all of music, yet can be both soothing and drivenly motivating, but him just talking normally is almost incomprehensible

Tommy Iommi is the guitarist it's iommi like Eye-oh-me. Not long before they were going into the studio to record their first album he cut the tips of his right hand fingers off on a machine. Because they were so tender he tuned down the guitar so the strings wouldn't hurt as bad, thus creating the heavy metal sound of the tuned down guitars that everyone copied after. He wears thimble like things on his fingers to help.
And as far as I know, he built these thimbles, himself. Just not 100% sure.

It may sound strange, maybe macabre, but thanks to this machine on which Tony lost his fingertips, today we have a music called METAL and its famous two-finger riffs.
He also used banjo strings.

We are fortunate that there's even documentation of this part of Sabbath career it is so early on. Recording could be better but it was 1970. If you've ever performed in front of a screaming wall of Marshall amplifiers and a live drum set with no partition around it without in your monitors or even playback and Stage wedge monitors you might have a bit more understanding of his difficulties with pitch. The irony here being that as you said he is not to the manor born, none of these guys had music lessons in any formal manner they came up from the ground up were the only other option would have been to work in the factories their own life. It's a very different reality than what musicians have in front of him these days
PS I heard someone say about this performance... That Bill Ward beats those drums like they owe him money. Hahaha
very well put, if you look at the drum sticks pay close attention. a lot of people miss it.
@@davidpierce1945 I haven't really paid a great deal of attention but I know Bill Ward used to play predominantly with the butt end of the stick for even more impact. And I believe he actually started that because they were so broke that when he would break the tips off drumsticks he flipped around and continue using them eventually that just became something he liked from a tone perspective
This was their anti-war song!! Very high energy rock and roll... Oh by the way, I saw them perform in the 1970's. A killer concert!!!! Keep an eye and ear on Bill Ward, the drummer. He beats those drums like they owe him money! Did you know Tony the lead guitar man had his finger tips injured on his right hand? The hand he frets with.

8:37 The comments are wrong here, The Record Company wanted the Lyrics changes for the Album, but they had other words originally... the song was meant to be Walpurgis.. where a priest gets burned alive as punishment for sending poor people to fight a war they never wanted... yes.. still relevant today....
Something else to remember is at this time period *they* were the pioneers of this style... there was no "training" for this other than practicing and "sounding good" to them... this was based a little on jazz riffing and improv... each person was just jamming out and yet supporting each other... and Ozzy was not actually "sharp"... those are the notes on all the versions, including studio... in a way, you almost have to throw off all your expectations and training because part of the whole appeal of Black Sabbath was "regular guys" just jamming out. The strange tuning and choice of notes was a bit deliberate.
Bill Wards hits those drums as if he were an angry brick layer - a very very skilled brick layer that is.

Ozzy's biography is a good read. He puts on no false airs about himself. He's still around, although in fragile health. Given his lifestyle, his longevity is remarkable.

Maggie Reneé listening to Black Sabbath? Really? I'm impressed! I saw Black Sabbath live in 1972 in Frankfurt Germany and a recorded video just doesn't do the experience justice.
Ozzy struggled with pitch throughout the years. Much like Miley Cyrus, the pitchiness gets blended into his style and as a result is overlooked. Back in the day he was typically sharp much of the time, though in later years he would fall short of the pitch in the shows when his health was at a low as well.
You nailed it, the musicianship holds up as the rhythm section is one of the very best, and Iommi is a legend’s legend of riff construction. This still resonates as one of the greatest anti-war rock anthems! Nice reaction. 👍🏻
Bear in mind that this performance is old enough to be your father, and is Still an epic performance. As a Band, a coherent musical unit, they are on fire in this performance. This performance still brings a chill to my spine

@@randywissler9923Maggie does mention Geezer briefly as she barely can hear his play, specially when one's concentrated on Bill and his drumming, Ozzie's singing and antics, or Tony and his riffs but, Maggie, I would recommend give it another listen later and pay special attention to the bass.. It's not very distinctive unless you're listening attentively to it, but Geezer Butler does a fiery performance in this song... Even though they only show his hands plucking on those bass strings for a second or two, you can tell he's jamming like the best of the best... There's even a moment when Bill (drummer) looks away from the camera, to his right, and fixes his sight briefly on Geezer to, in a way, synchronize the rhythm section with him in that particular moment...These two were always one of my favorite rhythm sections ever.. 👍
Notice that Bill Ward is using the drum sticks backwards. Don’t forget Geezer Butlers bass which brings everything together
No-one has ever accused Ozzy of having a vocal technique before - it was just supposed to be scary shouting. And it worked.
I don’t think his vocals are all that different from the studio version, so I tend agree. This was just him.

I think this is the song Walpurgis Moon. The record company rejected it due to heavy Satanic themes. They reworked this song into Warpigs, an antiwar song. I could be wrong, because I am not a Black Sabbath expert. I can't imagine what a crowd in 1970 thought of this performance. Of course, I wasn't even born then and I am 50.

Im late. I think it's awesome you're a trained singer and still find greatness in music that is basically untrained high school chums that just love rocking. I'm a musician, play several instrument to an acceptable level, can't sing at all. Well, something straight baritone, rock, blues, where groove is as important as ability, I can get by. Lol. Anyhow, yeah, it's not perfect, but it's rock n roll, something just magic about it. I've seen them have to hold Bill up, give him oxygen so he could take a bow. Even in his older years he refused to play less , he was spent and looked scary at the end ! Great guy. I have a friend that was in a rehab clinic with him, became long friends. Not me, my buddy. But I've heard great tales.

I applaud your choice of this song. Ozzy’s “sharpness” is partly due to the fact that the music is so loud that Oz had to sing and shout from the gut and soul. I know this from having been right at edge of the stage. It’s a great part of the musical style that Sabbath perfectly defined - raw power at absolute volume. They are the best heavy rock / metal band I ever saw or heard. Their massive sound was never fully captured on tape, film, or digital media. It was power created by God himself.
Tony the guitar player was these fingertips in a factory accident. He wears prosthetic fingertips on his right hand which He plays the notes with
Geezer Butler is a fantastic bass player who has often been overlooked.
I saw this band back in the day. They worked their tails off. They did not pause between songs. Last note straight in to the next note. Yes my dear that is Ozzy. The best comment I have heard about John was he can not string a sentence together. Yet when he sings he does not miss a single word. Maybe one party too many. Who knows???? The concert was kick butt. So much energy... Ozzy moved around a lot until it was time to sing. Geezer jumped around so much I do not know how he even played. The drummer did not stop for the entire show. Tony the guitar player is awesome. He blew his finger tips off of his right hand as a child with fire crackers. He stood perfectly still for his solos. And played his heart out.

I think it's o.k. to mention this, right here. I will even add one more: GRAI, a pagan folk metal band from Tartarstan, Russia, is currently posting songs from live gigs. I remember this so well. I think I was a sophomore / Jr. in high school when this came out. Wild time of booze /wine stashed in lockers. Could get almost anything you wanted in the Girl bathroom, you could buy a three-finger lid of Pot or a Rack of Whites for $10, LSD for a Buck a hit. I shock my grandkids with the Hippy stories of my youthful escapades of skinny dipping etc. GRANDMA!! YOU DIDN'T. Oh yes, I did. Growing up in the 60's/70s was one big party.

Black Sabbath played and created music as if they were one person, this was pretty much them through the entirety of their long illustrious, never to matched career.
This was a protest against the Vietnam war (and others). It was 1970, at least there was an anti-war generation at one time. I don't know what the hell is wrong with people today.
Ozzy is a god to heavy metal plain and simple when he is gone he will be cherished forever
Great reaction Maggie! You're watching Heavy Metal being born! Those of us around at this time remember how life changing this was. Interesting fact, guitarist Tony Iommi, who is left handed, lost the tips of his middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an industrial accident at 17. Wanting to keep playing, he made finger tips out of a melted soap bottle and wrapped them in leather. As this is his fretting hand it changed the way he played. This may have contributed to the creation of the metal guitar chords.
It isn't sharp, it is what he wanted.
Many people think that without Black Sabbath heavy metal wouldn’t exist. I gotta say I’m one of them.

Nobody hits those drums harder than Bill Ward. He's 70 now and still hits them that hard. And like you said he doesn't just drum he plays music.
First time listener of you and this song. The drummer has to be one of the best of all time. I am self taught in singing and unfortunately I never tried to make a career at it. I think I would love to sing big band music. I have a vast range in my voice but unfortunately at 58 I doubt I will ever go anywhere with it. You on the other hand are gorgeous and I hope you do well in your career. Love your black hair and your bubbly personality.

Unfortunately Ozzy doesn't sing all the album lyrics. Not sure why...Paranoid was released in September 1970, this gig is from December 1970. Still a great live version.
The final production obviously is a lot more clearer and the Video produced later bring clarity to the meaning of the song!

I agree with this. I may even go further and say best rock song of all time, personally. I'd put it ahead of Stairway or Bohemian Rhapsody, for example. Hotel California is great, too, but if I had to choose one song from the genre that stands out as impressive in all aspects -- lyrics, singing, musicianship, etc. -- I can't think of another that brings it all together better than this one. Every time I hear it, I become more confident of this take. Then again, there are probably days I'd pick a different song. Ha. It may depend on what's fresh in my mind.

I didn’t get to see Ozzy with Black Sabbath but I got too see both The Blizzard of OZZ and Diary of a Madman tours. The latter being on March 18th 1982 in Knoxville Tennessee at the Civic Coliseum…RANDY RHOADS FINAL SHOW before his tragic death in an airplane crash in Florida. REST IN PIECE RANDY THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE YOU EVER!

They have a cotney accent which is from Birmingham England. They play very loud. When they came to America they were playing a concert in Sacramento California where they opened up for mahogany rush when guitarest Tony Iommi struck his first chord the sound went from the amps to the floor to the ceiling back to the amps and blew the speakers. Frank Marino of mahogany rush said that they could use his amps but ozzy said no thanks and there management refunded the fans money.

I am back once again. I have been thinking (I know that is frightening) we need to get you a tye-dyed tee shirt for your hippie chick look. Once again I have seen Sabbath in concert. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. FOR SURE & FOR CERTAIN...... Bill Ward, the drummer, beats those drums like they owe him money. And yes these guys liked feedback.
You may already know this, Tony the lead guitar guru loss and or damaged his finger tips on his right hand. The hand he frets with. It makes NO difference. Just take it ALL in!!!! You may want to locate & review NIB. Another killer song by them. You will know you are at the correct one if there is a shot of a full moon in the beginning. Their sound was a new sound in a special time in music... They broke new ground for bands to come later!!!!

At around 10:40 something there is a shot of Tony's fingertips... The man is/was one hell of a good guitarist... May I suggest you find and watch their NIB video.... The bass is strong in that video. Also, take your headphones off & head bang a little.. You have the hair for it..... ENJOY....

The early magic of Bill Ward (drums), Geezer Butler(bassist, lyricist), Tony Iommi(guitar) and Ozzy Osborn (belting vocals and showmanship). From working in factory to inventing a stage genre - AKA Black Sabbath!
You don't see Geezer very often but he's the primary lyricist for the band.
With the maimed god and the mad poet on guitar and bass many people miss the subtle brilliance of Bill on drums. Great reaction.
Another great anti-war song that is even more heartbreaking today is Jinjer's song Home Back about the 2014 war when they had to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine. The lyrics are powerful, Tatiana's vocals are raw, and the video by a production team in Kyiv really brings it home.

the bass andrummer both are killer
They got so good at playing instruments because the alternative was working in a sheet metal factory pressing speaker brackets for Ford cars. I know the lead guitarist lost part of his finger during an industrial accident and his guitar days were very nearly over before they started. (He fashioned a new finger tip for himself out of a thimble as I recall)
