This is one of the wildest vocal performances ever recorded. Another reactor rightly called this "controlled chaos". The "piano" as you call it is actually a Hammond B3 / C3 organ that is full of electronic tubes and run into Leslie speaker cabinets. This particular lineup of band members is commonly called the Mark II version of Deep Purple and is responsible for most of their hit records.
Aaliyah !!.... i cant put into words how happy i am you are finally going to discover the voice of IAN GILLAN!!... this is basically a timeless masterpiece and ian gillan voice is out of this world while singing live !!!!!!
"Child In Time" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, It's that good. Ian Gillans voice is ridiculous belting them notes out and slowing down with soul. John Lord beating on the keyboards like it owes him money, Ritchie shredding on that beautiful Gibson ES-335, Paice on drums, and Glover on bass makes one hell of a band. Great reaction, your facial reaction to Ian Gillian's voice on them high notes was priceless. 👍
There was a reason why one music magazine writer called Ian Gillan the (paraphrasing here) 'Golden Throat of Rock 'n' Roll'. This is why. Ian used to be able to belt out those screams easily, night after night. Unfortunately, he's no longer able to perform this song. The toll of years has worn out his throat. Jon Lord was one of the best keyboardists in rock. His distinctive sound came from plugging that Hammond B3 organ into a Marshall amplifier stack. Ritchie Blackmore was, and still is, a fantastic guitarist and has influenced many people to learn guitar. Ian Paice (pronounced like 'Pace') is one of the best drummers in rock history (and one of my main influences as a young drummer back in the day). Roger Glover is the fantastic bassist you see here. This was the 'Mark II' version of Deep Purple, and by far the best version of the group. Glad you got the chance to hear them!
I knew you would love this song. It a Masterpiece for all generations. Every member of Deep Purple II was a virtuoso of their instruments, they could play more than just heave Rock and even performed a Concerto for Group and Orchestra, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Jon Lord organist Wrote the Concerto... P.S I also enjoyed your singing at the start.
I love when people hearing DP for the first time get to Ian's falsetto section and show surprise, and I'm thinking, "wait for it." Gillan was the best scream-singer ever, imo. Great reaction, Aaliyah. It's a pleasure to watch your reactions.
Like JohnRotonto Pretty girl you were just introduced to Ian i love watching people when he hits those high notes and knowing he is going even higher, i love it. The studio version from Purple in Rock is sublime. Features possibly Blackmore’s best studio solo. No one could play guitar like that in 1969 but Ritchie. Amazing dynamics .. skilful edge of mayhem performance. Ian Gillan’s scream is uniquely beautiful/searing … No band sounded like Purple in their prime. Best live rock band.
I saw them at Cal Jam 1 in 1974 and Led Zepplin at the Forum in 1975. No comparison. Deep Purple was the most talented, loudest band I have ever heard. (And I have been in a small club with Metallica) Ian Gilliam is so much more talented singer. Robert Plant sounded like a wounded cat for most of the cocnert.
Great reaction! It’s a Hammond B3 electric organ. Deep Purple here in their classic line up - 4 brilliant musicians: Ian Paice on drums, Jon Lord on keyboards, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ian Gillan on vocals - plus Roger Glover on bass.
Had the privilege to see Deep Purple live in the early eighties. When they played this song, I was blown away by Ian Gillian’s vocals. He was in his forties by then, but he hadn’t lost any vocal power. I didn’t know until then that he was the voice of Jesus on the original brown colored album “Jesus Christ Superstar “ that predated the motion picture. Ian really demonstrates those powerful vocals in that musical.

Love your reactions Aaliyah. I grew up listening to the 90s. Knew of Deep Purple but never dived into them. Thank you for this little gift. I'll be unwrapping the sounds of this band for the very first time 😊 Loved it!!
You missed the most phenomenal 2 decades the 60's and the 70's where all this music basically started. Back then there was pretty much free reign for the bands in the studio to experiment. Bands like these guys practically wrote/constructed opus's with key changes, time signature changes. They made the songs tell entire stories. These days?? Pfft nothing but rubbish on our radios. I do however HIGHLY recommend Ayreon for example. The musicians and vocalists there are mind blowing. There are many metal heavy and otherwise bands in Europe doing stuff like this which is well worth the listen.
Since you are in classical music you surely will enjoy their album "Deep Purple - Concerto for Group and Orchestra" from 1969. It's a live recording of Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, divided in three movements. Just check it out 🙂
Great reaction Aaliyah! I was waiting for the ricochet... it didn't disappoint! So surprising right? Ian's voice is amazing. Every time I hear that, I am surprised, even though I know it is coming.
Child in Time still gives me the goosebumps each time I listen to it, seeing new generations of musically educated listeners having the same amazed reaction I had years ago it's so refreshing. It seemed a really spontaneous reaction.
So glad you took my recommendation and listened to this. Ian had epic vocals, glad you enjoyed it 😀 Enjoy Deep Purple! Strange Kind of Woman Live is often another great one also from the band👍🏼

Man, i can only imagine hearing this for the 1st time. I have been listening to this song probably 50 times now and it still sends chills down my spine every single time.
First time I watched your reaction. It happens to be one of my favourite DP songs as I grew up when their music was hitting the airwaves. I am pleased that you gave it the thumbs up and I was waiting for your reaction when the high belt notes from Ian started! They are ALL rock gods, and certainly pioneers in the rock world! Hope many more generations can, and will enjoy their tunes!!
It has been a great pleasure to see you reacting to this song. Thank you so much for doing it. Makes me believe in the young people to admire good music again. I know you are a singer student of great music too, but this so called popular rock music was, and is, full of talented musicians and singers. I suggest you to continue learning about my favorite band, Deep Purple, and discover their great songs legacy. Thank you again, watching you in this video made me so happy. Have a long and happy life.
Every member of the band was a top class artist. Try to listen to their famous live albums from that time period. Musically they were truly amazing and they had a perfect lead singer.
I think its is so great that someone your age... can see how talented each member of the band was. The lead singer especially because there was no auto tune back in these days... And not all the little helpers that are available to guitar players today either. If you messed up on these instruments there was no way to hide it. And doing live meant the drummer better get things write or he throws everyone off. So it is so refreshing to see your reaction to music that was probably before your grandmas time lol. I was 6 when they were doing this performance and I am old enough to be your granny lol
I was going to suggest you react to this video, I love watching classically trained singers react to it, the look of shock when Ian hits the first high note never disappoints. 🤣 Great reaction, really enjoyed it, keep up the good work!
The song is great gig in the sky .. literally meaning heaven. It’s broke down into three parts the first is her going through death so she screams a lot . The second is when she comes to peace and excepts her death. The third is when she is welcomed into heaven . It’s a great song
Ok, there was more frivolous music around at that time too, but this is just one example of why music meant so much to more to my generation - I just had to get a guitar and join this world and am still into it at 62. Great to see younger people appreciating it today - had to smile with the Hammond organ intro described as piano. Great stuff.
I can only imagine how hard is must be to train your voice like you do but when RUclips offered this reaction video of yours I had to drag forth my memories of Deep Purple when I listened to them in the 70's and this song is a perfect example of why I liked this band and this lead singer. Your reaction @5:15 was one of complete surprise and astonishment as if you could not believe the raw power behind his vocalization. It was like someone being plunked down in the stands of a Top Fuel Dragway without any warning about what was about to take place. It's been decades since I listened to this song and I'm pretty sure it didn't sound this good on my 1970 Pioneer 8-Track under dash player. Anyway I sure had fun seeing your reaction. Keep training and listening to new things.
I too, an old guy from Canada, with a kid about your age who has heard it all, you keep going girl, broaden your horizons, live, love, learn. My suggestion, just to take you into another zone, would be Tort Elvis doing A Whole Lotta Love, Elvis meets Led Zep in a Regge beat, and then some, good tunes, and an amazing voice, check it out :)
Jon Lord's organ is the defining sound of Deep Purple. Some people say Ian Gillan's voice. Some people say Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. But for me this band was always about Jon Lord and his Hammond organ.
Your reactions are awesome I got to do some reissues of their albums through Warner Brothers I'm an art director and it's one of the highlights of my career. Keep up the great work🎉
And this was bloody 1970. It's still metal as hell, I can't imagine how it felt at the time. And most studio effects helping with singing had not yet been invented yet, and this was live, albeit in TV studio.
Thanks to you opera singer for bringing recognition to the rock music I ❤❤❤ all your reactions. Keep it up young girl, I did the same long ago, I started listening orquestas and concerts music because of my family but one day decided to taste rock and my first band was Deep Purple in 1979 why? You’ll see if you listen the first album 1969. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Dear, just your speaking voice is AMAZING omg...Your reaction and comments were spot on.Nobody will ever have Ians voice as he was truly gifted..Something about Deep Purple and Purple songs were simply better than anyone else....Fantastic...
You now see why this is my favorite Deep Purple song and one of my favorite songs ever. I've loved this band for over 50 years. The members of the group were among the best at their instruments at the time. Ian Paice on drums, Ritchie Blackmore as the guitar god, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on organ ans the incomparable Ian Gillan on vocals. Gillan wrote the lyrics as a Vietnam war protest song.
This performance of "Child In Time" is probably the most impressive and heartfelt singing I have ever heard. From the first time I am astonished every time I hear it. After seeing several others react to this song, you came up with a few new points, incl. "the singer's smile". Thank you for sharing your reaction with us.
Informative reaction - thank yoU! I think this piece is masterful. Even ignoring the lyrics, my soul is transported to weirdly frightening and tragic parts of the early 70s. Hammond B3 history in rock is interesting, often played through the whirling Leslie speakers, which are still made -- sounds which are imitated in many modern keyboards.
Everybody, I mean everybody in this iteration of Deep Purple wan an expert at their instrument (Ian Gillam's instrument, obviously, being his voice). Thanks for the video.
Your reactions to Ian's crazy vocal pyrotechnics were properly gobsmacked, lol! And THANK YOU so much for re-winding!! It's SO important and not that many reactors do it, so they miss crucial transitions, great drum fills, awesome lyrics, etc. Good stuff, thanks!
At the end of the year we have a tradition here in the Netherlands to vote for your favorite music of all time and with all the votes they play the top 2000 on the radio in the last two weeks of the year. When I vote most of the time Child in Time end up nr. 1 in my list. Every member of the band is rock royalty.
@@AaliyahCapili You could be my niece and, as un "uncle", I feel a sort of pride in seeing a person of your age listening and appreciating what my father made me appreciate back in the day when I was as young as you... maybe I'm exaggerating, but, you know, you turn sentimental when you become adult... sorry for this long comment, but, even if I don't know you personally, I wish you to be peaceful and happy in your life as much as possible. "The future needs a big kiss", as U2 sing in one of their songs. I hope your future will deserve your big kiss...
I first heard this song fifty-five years ago at the end of Purple's first American tour. The impact never diminishes. What one does is just listen not disect.
Thank you for this reaction to one of my favourite 5 bands EVER (the others being The Beach Boys, Hawkwind, Nightwish and Band-Maid). Ian Gillan's voice was simply the best at this time , and he is still singing well over 50 years later (although he can no longer hit those top notes !). This version of Deep Purple (known as MkII) is my favourite, Ritchie Blackmore was creating new ways to play the guitar with speed and precision which is still a huge influence on modern players, Ian Paice brought amazing riffs to to the songs and his flams and rolls are second to none, Jon Lord was simply the best rock keyboard player of his age and Roger Glover was a very talented bass player but also brought amazing song writing skills and production skills to the band. Other songs to check out from this version of the band include 'Speed King', 'Lazy' and the great 'Highway Star'. You might also want to check out 'Burn' by the next version of the band with different vocalists after Gillan and Glover left the band. I love your reactions generally so keep doing what you do !
This song just never gets old for me. Not just the vocals, the whole track is just next level. Possibly my favourite in this is Ian Paice being just the most chilled out drummer. Just for fun, go check out Ian Gillan doing something a bit different, check him as lead singer on the Black Sabbath album "Born Again"

Thank you again, watching you in this video made me so happy.
Have a long and happy life.
Oh wow thank you very very very much for your kind words. Much appreciated💕
I'm really enjoying your reactions and your artist / song choice. Thanks for posting this one and i'm looking forward to your next one.
Thank you so much too💕
Every member of the band was a top class artist. Try to listen to their famous live albums from that time period. Musically they were truly amazing and they had a perfect lead singer.
Thanks for sharing
Their Made In Japan album is one of the best live albums of the era! Child In Time is on it!
Yes dear that is a high A5 scream. I love watching these reactions from that (because I know what to expect).
😍😍😍
I think its is so great that someone your age... can see how talented each member of the band was. The lead singer especially because there was no auto tune back in these days... And not all the little helpers that are available to guitar players today either. If you messed up on these instruments there was no way to hide it. And doing live meant the drummer better get things write or he throws everyone off. So it is so refreshing to see your reaction to music that was probably before your grandmas time lol. I was 6 when they were doing this performance and I am old enough to be your granny lol
Oh thanks so much for sharing🥰
I was going to suggest you react to this video, I love watching classically trained singers react to it, the look of shock when Ian hits the first high note never disappoints. 🤣 Great reaction, really enjoyed it, keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for sharing♥️
Ow, your reaction is hilarious! I've been a metal fan since my 16 y old.. still so amazed with the music. This is a classic!!
Thank you
It's easy to forget how young they were writing these masterpieces. In 1968 when Deep Purple was formed they were only 20 (Paice) to 27 (Lord).
Thanks for sharing
I think this is one of the best live versions of any rock song ever.
🥰
56 yo here and I can't think of a better one.
This is the greatest rock performance ever, period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🥰
Made in Japan is the best live album ever
I am so glad you are checking out the amazing Ian Gillan and Deep Purple. They are amazing especially the Mk 2 and Mk 3 line-ups.
They are so amazing 🥰thanks for watching too
The song is great gig in the sky .. literally meaning heaven. It’s broke down into three parts the first is her going through death so she screams a lot . The second is when she comes to peace and excepts her death. The third is when she is welcomed into heaven . It’s a great song
Listen to it in the context I did robed in my first post it will open up your ears to the true meaning behind the song
Thanks so much for sharing
Insane drummer skills too.
🥰😍🥰
This is a great song from Deep Purple to react too! I'm so happy you enjoyed it, I certainly did! Thank you!
Thank you very much😍
Ok, there was more frivolous music around at that time too, but this is just one example of why music meant so much to more to my generation - I just had to get a guitar and join this world and am still into it at 62. Great to see younger people appreciating it today - had to smile with the Hammond organ intro described as piano. Great stuff.
🥰🥰🥰
Hello, thanks so much for your kind words and appreciation. Thanks for sharing too🌺have a wonderful day💕
Love DP, love you...
♥️
It sure was fun to watch you get amazed at the high belts and pause right before the even higher ones...lovely reaction, as usual
Thank you very much💕
I had the pleasure of seeing this mark of Deep Purple in the 80's
🥰
So did I......several months b4 Perfect Strangers came out a friend and I were wishing that they would get back together......
Thank you so much for the recommendation💕
All these guys are absolute masters of their craft.
🥰
Jon Lord's organ is the defining sound of Deep Purple. Some people say Ian Gillan's voice. Some people say Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. But for me this band was always about Jon Lord and his Hammond organ.
🌺
Your reactions are awesome I got to do some reissues of their albums through Warner Brothers I'm an art director and it's one of the highlights of my career. Keep up the great work🎉
Oh thanks so much, it gives me motivation to keep on improving💕
@@AaliyahCapili Yes, you will keep improving because you have amazing talent ⭐✨😃🎸
And this was bloody 1970. It's still metal as hell, I can't imagine how it felt at the time.
And most studio effects helping with singing had not yet been invented yet, and this was live, albeit in TV studio.
They are so amazing😍
Once again you made it, it was a great reaction to one of the greatest bands, you impresed me with your musical taste, i'm your fan!!!!
Thank you so much! 😊
Thanks so much
You now see why this is my favorite Deep Purple song and one of my favorite songs ever.
Thanks for sharing
Great reaction and that was probably the best live performance ever. You have a new one.
Wow, thank you!
Thank u Aaliyah for sharing this great episode, pls have more coming💙💟💙Solid fan of Deep Purple here from the🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Hello🥰🥰🥰
This performance of "Child In Time" is probably the most impressive and heartfelt singing I have ever heard. From the first time I am astonished every time I hear it. After seeing several others react to this song, you came up with a few new points, incl. "the singer's smile". Thank you for sharing your reaction with us.
Oh thanks so much
Informative reaction - thank yoU!
Thanks so much for sharing
SO good to se your reaction!!
I have listned to this kind of music since first half of the 80s
Hope you enjoyed it!💕
Love ure reaction when he goes higher
Thanks so much
Welcome to deep purple mark 2. Good to have you in the club. 😊
Thanks so much🥰
Everybody, I mean everybody in this iteration of Deep Purple wan an expert at their instrument (Ian Gillam's instrument, obviously, being his voice). Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for watching too
Your reactions to Ian's crazy vocal pyrotechnics were properly gobsmacked, lol! And THANK YOU so much for re-winding!! It's SO important and not that many reactors do it, so they miss crucial transitions, great drum fills, awesome lyrics, etc. Good stuff, thanks!
Thanks so much too for taking the time to watch🥰
At the end of the year we have a tradition here in the Netherlands to vote for your favorite music of all time and with all the votes they play the top 2000 on the radio in the last two weeks of the year. When I vote most of the time Child in Time end up nr. 1 in my list. Every member of the band is rock royalty.
Thanks for sharing
Your face and smile said it all! Keep on rockin' young opera lady!!! Greetings from Italy! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you♥️
@@AaliyahCapili You could be my niece and, as un "uncle", I feel a sort of pride in seeing a person of your age listening and appreciating what my father made me appreciate back in the day when I was as young as you... maybe I'm exaggerating, but, you know, you turn sentimental when you become adult... sorry for this long comment, but, even if I don't know you personally, I wish you to be peaceful and happy in your life as much as possible.
"The future needs a big kiss", as U2 sing in one of their songs. I hope your future will deserve your big kiss...
I first heard this song fifty-five years ago at the end of Purple's first American tour. The impact never diminishes.
What one does is just listen not disect.
🌺
Every reactionist pauses in aw at the high notes and how incredible it is and I'm setting there with a grin thinking "oh man you're in for a treat!!"
Thanks so much🥰
Deep Purple 💜 is best of the best !!!
😍
instant sub here! CHILD IN TIME WAS MY SH!T BACK THEN! im a big fan of your channel now!
Oh thanks so much for your support, much appreciated💕
My dear, you have an amazing voice. It's great to know you're enjoying it and sharing it. Thank you.
Thank you so much!💕💕💕
I absolutely LOVE this song.
P.S. You have a great smile.
Thank you
Thank you for this reaction to one of my favourite 5 bands EVER (the others being The Beach Boys, Hawkwind, Nightwish and Band-Maid).
Thank you very very much for taking the time to share. Have a great weekend💕
That formation of deep purple is perfect, and your smile too❤
Thank you very much
This over 50year old epic song is one of the best i know. Aaliyah, I love your reaction as an opera singer. Thanks a lot.
Thank you very very much💕
Love you girl and the look on your face was priceless! More. Please until next time stay well and popping for fresh
Thank you very much🌺
You did a wonderful job reacting and one of the best bands and best song that there ever has been
Thanks so much for your kind words💕
This song just never gets old for me.
Not just the vocals, the whole track is just next level. Possibly my favourite in this is Ian Paice being just the most chilled out drummer.
Just for fun, go check out Ian Gillan doing something a bit different, check him as lead singer on the Black Sabbath album "Born Again"
Thanks for sharing
This version is the Mark I Lineup - IMO the Mark 2 version did it a hair better, especially Gillain on vocals.
