Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are so legendary ❤ So many amazing masterpieces from Brothers in Arms to Romeo and Juliet to Local Hero (Newcastle FC's theme tune Going Home - which has a new star studded recording for charity) to the incredible music for Princess Bride. Brilliant 👌
I think of this song as an homage to musicians. He’s singing about a real jazz band he saw one night having stumbled into some random south London club in the middle of nowhere. Horns section “blowing Dixie”. Kids in the corner saying “this ain’t rock and roll”. The guitar player can only afford “an old guitar”. This band he saw were heroes. The kind of guys who live for their Saturday night gig, never gonna make it big. Enjoying it. So in this live version I think the whole band really go to town showing us their own musicianship. Both guitars give solos. Drummer is on fire. Bassist is driving and driving and driving it along. Two keyboard players on top of all that. It’s virtually an orchestra. Those lyrics make me feel happy and sad at the same time. Like I say, a homage to all those countless musicians who are great but never get famous, never make money, just make the people happy.
Telegraph Road please!🙏 Same venue last song of the night and their jackets came off! Mark changes up his guitar to a "resonator" guitar and the sound makes me weep! Excellent show would have loved to been there! Thank you folks for your reaction love this band!

And Knopflers sweet glassy fender like tones washing all over me. Yes i was fan before this concert. But it all went way beyond my hopes for the night. And here I am 42 years later going to music room every other night and doing my best to recreate my guitar heroes sound. The fact that i can now get fairly close is a buzz to me that I don't think anyone would understand. But I STILL can't get enough of certain Dire Straits songs.
You have to do Telegraph Road from the same concert. BTW, this version is faster than the studio version because the drummer was just going for it as his Dad was in the audience for the 1st time. Great reaction to another legendary band. 👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stop passing this ridiculous story about Terry and his da. He has always taken his da to his gigs if at all possible. Terry is a professional and he would never go beyond Mark for any reason and Mark is always in full control of his band. So just stop passing this around.
The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso.
Always puzzled me as a lefty and as a guitarist who plays as a righty, why you'd give the arguably more difficult job of fretting to your non dom hand normally, a lefty flip guitar seems strange to me as a lefty you'd then be using your right hand to fret, that should be how right handers normally play logically
@@corleonedon77 Oh I know. I'm a right playing lefty. I think it's starting out. You lack the dexterity and fluidity in the right wrist, which is what people usually concentrate on first. Love this song and Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. You have to react to "Brothers in Arms" easily the most emotional song Dire Straits ever recorded.
I was in college in England when this was first released as a single. It was played on the radio constantly and it blew everybody in our year away. I went to six Dire Straits live performances in the following few years. I saw Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and many other contemporary bands live, but the genius of Mark Knopfler on guitar has never been surpassed in my opinion.
I was in that audience, what an absolutely fabulous night, the entire concert was brilliant. Look how they smiled, pure joy (bands are too cool to smile these days, look how ‘happy’ Oasis always look) I’m pushing 76 now and this gives me as much joy as the first time I heard it. Saw them several times on this tour. Pure genius.

The journalist asked; how does it feel to be considered the best guitarist? PRINCE replied ask MARK! This lineup of Dire Straits is my favorite and this concert contains all the songs that are worth watching. 🌺
The thing I really love about thgis is that whilst Mark Knopfler is THE guitarist, he’s quite happy to let the rythym guitarist have his own moments of glory too. This video is special because all the members of the band are so generous with each other. Allowing each one to shine in various places and this brings each one to the forefront in a way that is so much fun to watch. They are having an absolute blast playing this!
It was a demo of Sultans of Swing (1977) that secured Dire Straights their first record deal. I'm grateful I grew up with this music, but it is also fun to see new generations discovering Dire Straits for the first time. (And yes, also check out the lyrics, and the great stories behind them, as Mark is an amazing storyteller). Mark Knopfler is a guitar virtuoso, and he also did the song-writing, composing and arrangement for the band; he nevertheless always made sure to give the other band members a chance to shine (in all of their live performances you will notice that Mark constantly makes eye contact with the other guys, and often moves around the stage to 'connect' with his bandmates, literally sharing the spotlight). Mark is best know for his unique guitar-plucking style (unlike most guitarists, he doesn't use a pick), his amazing tone and his unique phrasing, which contribute to his extraordinary ability to elicit emotion through his guitar, usually producing a visceral impact on the listener. In addition to all of that, Mark is actually left handed, but plays guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! If you want to see the breathtaking musicianship of this band, and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" and "Once Upon a Time in the West", both from this Alchemy Live concert. And no exploration of Dire Straits would be complete without checking out their performance of "Brothers in Arms" and "Money for Nothing" from On the Night Live. (Their live performances are always next level!).
Telegraph Road from the same concert is absolutely amazing and displays the sublime musicianship of each and every member! I feel certain you will absolutely love it!! Brilliant reaction! Thank you and best wishes from the UK!
The original band was just 4 guys. The self titled first album where this song is from is just sooo good. Regularly played. Great sound. The more people who listen to Dire Straits the better.
you have just witnessed musical perfection imo , it just doesnt get any better than this , all the members of the band are in total sync , no gimicks , no fancy light shows just pure music , the drummer Terry Williams is insanely gr8 , but Marks sublime guitar playing is just out of this world , he has the unique ability to make a guitar make you feel emotion , the guitar cries or sings and takes you along that journey , truely awesome , i was fortunate to grow up in this era , the first time i heard this i just knew this is something very special , blows your mind , thanks so much guys for the experience of a lifetime , never to be forgotten
A lot of people got to live shows because they want to see the songs played exactly like the record. This is why I go to live shows, to see them play a different, better, more dynamic, energized version of my favorite songs. Drum solos, longer Guitar solos, Passion! Something that no one else has seen. That is what this is and what live shows should be about!
How could anyone not love that song and blissful performance. I was just sitting there like a nodding dog with a big smile on my face the whole way through.
Best drummer over a full performance, I have ever seen/heard. There are great drum solo's, but this drummer, over the course of a full 10-minute song, clearly is the best playing a full song, I have ever seen/heard.
The atmosphere was electric, a shared experience of nostalgia and admiration for the artistry of Dire Straits. It’s moments like these that remind you of the power of live music to bring people together!
Way back my folks would play this song every chance they could, but it was only recently I got to see this recording, I must have watched a dozen reactions to it since, it's possibly my all time favorite performance.
Greatest songwriter, greatest lyricist, greatest cool, cool singer, greatest guitarist ever, and this recording is my favorite recording of any music ever. My hero, Mark Knopfler.
You could react to absolutely any track from this concert and be blown away, but Telegraph Road is simply a masterpiece. It's got everything. I saw them on the next (Live in 85 for the Brothers In Arms album) tour, and to this day it's still the best concert I've ever been to.
Knopfler is one great musician, storyteller, lyricist, choreographer and entertainer. Everyone who witnessed that gig live would have seen and appreciated something special, I’m only too sorry that I wasn’t there myself. Hats off also to Alan, John, Hal, Terry & Tommy.
I love the way they wrote or engineered the audience participation in the song, gave them an obvious outlet to be followed by a section that needs attention to appreciate. The audience were given their spot of glory just as the band members had their highlights.
First time i heard this song was back in 1978. It was summer and i was on the beautiful island of Naxos (Greece) From every pub...every beach...every radio you could hear Dire straits...It was hot..the beer cold and the women moore beautiful than ever. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
My favourite band from my youth & still my go-to vinyl albums to play today. Saw them a few times in the '80's at London venue's. Mark has a unique sound & way of playing & all the band members were at the top of their game for this performance. Probably up there as one of the best live performances of all time. Telegraph Road from the same live show must be your next DS reaction. Fun fact, Mark is a lefty by plays right handed & rarely uses a pick.
This was ALL about the ultimate performance of the music, from Dire Straits. Great reactions Jess and Mike. You are both still picking the best music choices.
I have been to two concerts with Dire Straits, both stunning exhibitions of musicianship. Knopflers compositions and virtuoso guitar playing is heartbreakingly beautiful. From Sultans to Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road and so many more, everyone a masterpiece! I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Cream and my particular favourite Bob Dylan, Dire Straits are in my opinion worthy members of the Pantheon of Rock.
Love this version - and your reaction! Fun fact - The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a Dixieland jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced their name, the Sultans of Swing; Mark Knopfler found the contrast between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings and their grandiose name amusing! Yes - more Dire Straits please! 🥰
It's said by many that Knopfler thought the Sultans of Swing were mediocre, but listening to the lyrics, it sounds to me like praise. What he thought was funny, was they were playing in an almost-empty pub (he even gives them an excuse: "competition in other places"), but they spoke as if they were playing Wembley Stadium. Great song, glad you enjoyed it.
Mark walked into a bar in London and a band was playing, this song is about that encounter. He also wrote a song about a visit to a tv and white goods outlet, the store staff were commenting on someone on MTV. The song “Money for Nothing” is about that visit, they sang it on Live Aid along with another singer from Newcastle, Sting. “Brothers in Arms” is one of Marks best.
Brothers In Arms is a superb piece of songwriting. Knopfler's delivery is honest, engrossing. His guitarwork makes it sound as if the instrument is crying, mourning the senseless loss of lives.
And don’t forget that we didn’t have internet, cell phones and all the other distractions of modern times. Take it from an old guy, we were engaged by our music and musicians had to ensure they kept us engaged. Just love your reactions and those smiles? Tells it all. ❤
This is quite simply, one of the greatest rock performances EVER!!!
Hes the Super-Grandmaster on the E-Guitar...

This is why I go to live shows, to see them play a different, better, more dynamic, energized version of my favorite songs. Drum solos, longer Guitar solos, Passion! Something that no one else has seen. That is what this is and what live shows should be about!
I'm an 80s teen, so love their music! Did you notice the keyboardist dancing his heart away in the background!?! Iconic!
Lovely seeing a smile on your face for the whole reaction
How could anyone not love that song and blissful performance. I was just sitting there like a nodding dog with a big smile on my face the whole way through.
Best drummer over a full performance, I have ever seen/heard. There are great drum solo's, but this drummer, over the course of a full 10-minute song, clearly is the best playing a full song, I have ever seen/heard.
Not seen many drummers then!
Telegraph Road is a must same show great reaction.
This is one of the best live performances of all time from the WHOLE band.
I've always said that Mark Knopfler is the Mozart to Rock.
The atmosphere was electric, a shared experience of nostalgia and admiration for the artistry of Dire Straits. It’s moments like these that remind you of the power of live music to bring people together!
Tunnel of Love and Romeo & Juliet are also great
A magic night, the audience knew, the band knew, it is fantastic it was caught on film.
You've now heard probably the best two guitar solos back to back.
Aside from "Comfortably Numb" of course!!
Telegraph Road from this same concert, blow your mind! Classic poetry to music. The performance, ****ing nuts!
This is the best Live version of any musical venue that I have ever seen and I am really old!
Way back my folks would play this song every chance they could, but it was only recently I got to see this recording, I must have watched a dozen reactions to it since, it's possibly my all time favorite performance.
This tennis player is the best guitarist I've ever heard
haha... you ripped this comment off another rection video!! DW tho I watched all the other rection vids of this aswel 👍
@jordannauta4674 😂 yeah it was too good not to use 😂
Greatest songwriter, greatest lyricist, greatest cool, cool singer, greatest guitarist ever, and this recording is my favorite recording of any music ever. My hero, Mark Knopfler.
You could react to absolutely any track from this concert and be blown away, but Telegraph Road is simply a masterpiece. It's got everything. I saw them on the next (Live in 85 for the Brothers In Arms album) tour, and to this day it's still the best concert I've ever been to.
And that my friends , is the way its done!
As others have commented, Mark speaks and then his guitar answers! Fantastic!
I was fortunate enough to see this tour live in Houston, Tx. It was either 1985 or 1986. Best live performance Ever!!
To be in the presence of greatness for 10 minutes and 46 seconds.
Yes Telegraph road from the same concert. Alan Clarke on piano comes into his own and meshes with Marks guitar wonderfully. Top notch.
We had the best time as teenagrs listening to our 70's bands. Happy memories
Alchemy... best album in the world!
It’s how live albums should be made
First time i heard this song was back in 1978. It was summer and i was on the beautiful island of Naxos (Greece) From every pub...every beach...every radio you could hear Dire straits...It was hot..the beer cold and the women moore beautiful than ever. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
musicianship perfected from an early age.
Was lucky enough to have seen them on this tour. they were fantastic
Yeah I saw them as a teen in Glasgow on their last tour before they broke up. They were brilliant!
Pure genius without technology help
This was ALL about the ultimate performance of the music, from Dire Straits.
Great reactions Jess and Mike.
You are both still picking the best music choices.
i grew up with these as well as others but its simple, it is just proper brilliant music, and raw talent - we have lost all this these days i feel
I love Dire Straits, so many different sounds as well, they can sound completely different. Even classical guitars.
You have watched the best live performance ever....ever
I have been to two concerts with Dire Straits, both stunning exhibitions of musicianship. Knopflers compositions and virtuoso guitar playing is heartbreakingly beautiful. From Sultans to Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road and so many more, everyone a masterpiece! I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Cream and my particular favourite Bob Dylan, Dire Straits are in my opinion worthy members of the Pantheon of Rock.
This is a performance that captures the magic. It also runs twice the length of the studio or the radio release version.
They've been doing this song since 1974 so they have it down pretty good!
He walked into a South London jazz club one day when it was raining. This is what the song is about.
The joy of being alive, encapsulated in one performance.
Imagine discovering Comfortably Numb and this back-to-back...
Crazy thought.
Thank you. I love this. Especially the way that it is so obvious that they are having the time of their lives out there on stage.
