The brilliance of this performance lies in 2 particular places. First is the fact that almost every riff Mark Knopfer plays is a brilliant melodic hook. He could’ve written fifteen different hit songs with the riffs he put into this song alone. Secondly, it’s the variable dynamics and tempo of the performance. We will likely never again hear a track like this on a record, as, these days, mastering engineers tend to apply so much compression to a mix that it has no changes in dynamics:the soft parts are made loud, and the loud parts are squashed, causing a song to play at a consistent volume throughout. Moreover, in this performance, the band very subtly speeds up and slows the performance, creating feelings of tension and release. Modern recording practise is to snap every instrument’s rhythm to a fixed grid, ensuring we never feel that tension.
Wow! Great appraisal. Thanks. I'm 55, I could've been there, I wish I had been. First heard Dire Straits with the Brothers in Arms album release in 1985, I was 17. CDs had just become a thing and Brothers in Arms was a rare DDD (for rock music) CD at the time. DDD meaning digitally recorded, mixed and mastered. It's contested that there wasn't actually any digital recording in 1985 so it was probably more likely ADD in reality but whatever, it was cool lol. What was super cool were the CD extended tracks. Mark IMO remains the best ever finger picking rock guitarist of all time. I have an original Alchemy Live book fold LP and I cherish it :)
If you watch how Mark plays it, the whole song bar the solos is basically a lick. I worked it out from the VHS back in the 80's. There are lot of creators on Shorts, and Tik Tok making it so much harder than they needed to by playing wrong.
Nope, could have cut them out entirely and the guitar could have easily held the whole thing up. The excellent work by the second guitarist and bass player with exquisite drum ing just made the whole even better
Also notice a subtlety most people miss: When Mark is singing about Guitar George being "strictly rhythm", he lets the rhythm guitarist, Hal Lindes, take the lead.
The story goes that his father was in the audience that night, and was given a pass by the rest of the band to go a little nuts, and show off a bit. It ended up making this into a truly tremendous performance.
Thank you for giving Mark Knopfler the credit he's so well deserves. Everybody my age consider this song a bookmark in their life. Every person in that band was at the top of their Craft on that night.
One of the greatest songs of all time by one of the greatest bands of all time. Mark is almost entirely self taught, fantastic guitarist. I think he deserves to be higher on the Rolling Stone Top 500 Guitarists of all time.
Those RS top guitarist lists are insulting. Mark is always on the list but too often surrounded by guitarists who have no business on the list other than one of the "raters" has some affection for them without a clue about comparison with other guitarists. There's usually about 20-25 guitarists who deserve to be there and rated highly but roughly 40-50 who are there for the most subjective reasons while better guitarists are left out.
I have played guitar my whole life and the things he does on Telegraph road is IMPOSSIBLE to learn. I need a couple of more lives to do that. 😉So impressing at every level.
What blows me away is that He taught himself how to play guitar, and ended up creating his own unique *finger picking* style, in a Rock Band of all things!!!!
According to stories MK has told in interviews over the years, he did amazingly teach himself to play mostly while listening to Chet Atkins records in his father's collection, which also led to him creating his unique fingerstyle playing with inspiration from Atkins. Of course, they later recorded an album together, "Neck and Neck," with Chet Atkins expressing great affection and respect for MK's playing. I'm sure that over the years Mark learned more of the technical aspects like musical references related to chords, notes and technique to further develop his style.
the story of the song is not about themselves but of a night when Mark was walking around the city and got attracted by a band playing in a small club and no one paying attention to them but Mark thought they were great, the band in the club called themselves "the sultans of swing" and Mark made them famous.
This is what happens when you have a band full of people who are top tier at their instruments, playing in harmony and having a damn good time doing it. They're great, and they know it.
For real. There's something to be said for humility, don't get me wrong, but there's also something really special when someone knows they're at the absolute top of their game and they're about to blow everyone away. You can see it in the expressions on their faces repeatedly in this video, and it's freaking glorious.
No, this song is what happens when a band full of people show off their talent. When a band full of people decide to have fun they create "Twisting By The Pool" which is what Dire Straits also did.

In my opinion one of the greatest live performances by a band you will ever see. I’ve watched this performance at least 12 times on RUclips. The best word to sum up their performance is WOW! I’m glad you enjoyed it too.
The lineup on that performance: Mark Knopfler - lead guitar and lead vocals, Hall Lindes - rhythm guitar, John Illsley - bass, Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher - keyboards, Terry Williams - drums.
Mark Knopfler is an insanely gifted guitar player. He is one of the most sought after session guitarists. As mentioned previously, he picks with his fingers because he found that he can produce much better sounds this way. A gift to the musical world
Session gutarist? He's one of the greatest players of all time, I'm stunned by that comment, he's never been sought after, he is a global superstar. Always the front man and mostly a solo career
I'm so glad you chose this version to hear for the first time. I've been listening to them since they first came out in the 70's. The same excitement and joy comes over me every time, especially with variety of live performances available. Knopfler IS a genius, im mesmerized watching and hearing him play, but I have to say that I'm impressed that you appreciated the hidden hero in the drummer.
One of the best bands of all time. The best bands were coming from the UK at that time and each of them left their mark. You have once again stumbled on a band that will give you a music experience like no other. Good luck on your Rock journey, may you have the same pleasure and experience that we the young generation of the time had. This music will change your life and you will still be playing it for the rest of your life. You might not believe me just now but it will happen. All the best.
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar and vocals Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar John Illsey, Bass guitar Terry Williams, Drums Alan Clark, keys And for these shows July 1983, additional guest keys Tommy Mandel
This recorded is one of the best of all time. Queen at Live Aid hit these heights thanks to Freddie’s masterful control of the crowd. Bono has achieved similar effect and these have been recorded in their live albums: Red Rocks being a favvourite of mine. But this song does not stand alone in this amazing collection: Once Upon a Time in the West, Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, the amazing Tunnel of Love with its multiple changes in pace, as well my hidden gem Portobello Belle. This truly was THE concert and those lucky enough to be there are the truly blessed to have witnessed one of the all time great performances of a most all round talented band.
Mark Knopfler has a quite sizable catalog. Not all of it with Dire Straits or even Rock and Roll. He plays a lot of Bluegrass music. Finger style guitar player.
I love these reactions. They couldn't stop smiling. So many times you wonder if the reactions are genuine, but with this channel you can truly see genuine joy. Great reaction.
Great reaction. Welcome to the wonderful world that has Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits in it. Mark Knopfler is a master story teller. His songs take you on a journey and always have a deeper meaning. His voice and guitar work together to add the emotion to the stories like no other. There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985, “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Brothers in Arms”, “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version, and so much more. His solo career - 10 albums and a bunch of movie scores is fantastic as well.
Guys, it is so fantastic to watch your reaction to the genius that is Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits band. Sultans of Swing is a great beginning. As a lyricist, Mark is all about storytelling. One rainy night, he heard a pub band playing some jazz. He walked in "outa the rain" to "hear the jazz go down". There were very few patrons there "competition from other places" etc. But the catch for Mark was the fact they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. Almost all of Mark's songs are stories, coupled with some of the most extraordinary guitar playing in various music genres you can imagine. "River of Love", "Tunnel of Love", "Skateaway"", "Telegraph Road", "Portabella Belle", "Brothers in Arms", "Money for Nothing", "The Bug", "Walk of Life", "Why worry", "Calling Elvis", " When it comes to you", "You and your friend", "Heavy Fuel", "Private Investigations", "So far away from me", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hold on", "Local Hero", the acoustic versions of "Wild Theme", "Smooching", and the Electric guitar versions of "Going Home" based on the melodies in "Wild Theme" - all the music soundtracks he wrote for the movies Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, and Altamira, and duet album with the one of the other greatest guitarists - Chet Atkins. ALL OF THIS in a myriad of musical genres when he still had his Dire Straits band...and then, to continue as a solo career for the next 30 years and on. I've had the greatest of pleasures of living and working in London just as Dire Straits started over 40 years ago...and have had the greatest of privileges of enjoying Mark's music all this time into his long solo phase. Enjoy true musical genius while you still have ears to listen. So much music, so many different genres, so much genius! As a finger plucking electric guitarist he is without peer. The sounds he can produce cover the whole scope of human emotion. Mark is the musician's musician, and the guitarist's guitarist. Enjoy!
I was so lucky to grow up at the time they were performing. The coolest band, the greatest guitarist and in this concert: whoa the drummer! Check out the back story to him..
The guitar is the singer....I love how the drummer is really highlighted, as much as the lead guitar... Not just back in the dark, tucked away... Timeless.

Mr. Knopfler is an absolute brilliant guitarist and songwriter. Somewhat similar style to Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, only in that finger picking. Romeo and Juliet is a brilliant song. Such a poem. Indigo Girls do great cover.

He could’ve written fifteen different hit songs with the riffs he put into this song alone. Secondly, it’s the variable dynamics and tempo of the performance. You’ve just witnessed one of the top 10, live rock performances of all time!
Welcome to Dire Straits! So many great songs. I got to see Knofler play a solo show in Indy that was spectacular.
Back in 2015?
@@timmosher4194 I think it was more like 2005. Can't remember for sure.
@@cshubs Ok, I saw him in Indy in 2015. Just wondering.
@@timmosher4194 I think it was 7/14/05 at the Murat.
Love the way you two did not stop the video every minute to give your comments.
A British band from that legendary period.. is exactly what it was. Legendary! So does Mark Knopfler. One of the greatest guitarists ever!
In my opinion one of the greatest live performances by a band you will ever see. I’ve watched this performance at least 12 times on RUclips. The best word to sum up their performance is WOW! I’m glad you enjoyed it too.
Try Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live. They were on fire at Alchemy. Dire Straits have their own unique sound.
Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love from the same concert must be next on your playlist - you will not be disappointed!
Tunnel of Love from Wembley 1985 is far better performance of the song and a more polished arrangement too IMHO.
@@DavidG-u2k Yep, seen that one too, brilliant - and I'll have to agree with you!
not
MELT YOUR FACE . One of the greatest guitarist that will ever live
Do Telegraph Road from the same concert (Alchemy). You won’t be disappointed by this other musical trip!
The lineup on that performance: Mark Knopfler - lead guitar and lead vocals, Hall Lindes - rhythm guitar, John Illsley - bass, Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher - keyboards, Terry Williams - drums.
If I had a Time Machine I would go back to this concert.
Thank you for the nice reaction. This performance is simply outstanding from every musical perspective.
You guys have to watch Telegraph Road" Live at same venue and concert
I didn't realise they were from my home turf 😮, I'm 53 and only just finding this out 😅
Good Lord Carol...You are STUNNING. You're eyes could melt any man.
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar and vocals
Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar
John Illsey, Bass guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, keys
And for these shows July 1983, additional guest keys Tommy Mandel
I really like his Notting Hillbillies album - 'Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time'
Congrats on discovering Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, and yes the drummer is the 'secret' hero of this performance.
The best electric guitarist of all times and by quite a large margin.
I love these reactions. They couldn't stop smiling. So many times you wonder if the reactions are genuine, but with this channel you can truly see genuine joy. Great reaction.
Bring our music back....WE THE CROWD HAVE SPOKEN!
here here . . . bring it all back
I love it when young people discover good music from the 70s and 80s!
The best era of music in my opinion
Saw them live in Berlin in 1981....pure magic, never forget that concert., the talent was phenomenal, never to be repeated. 😊❤
Pure musicianship................... Talent
The guitar is the singer....I love how the drummer is really highlighted, as much as the lead guitar... Not just back in the dark, tucked away... Timeless.
Terry Williams is killing it!❤
I HAD THE pleasure of watching these guys growing up. no 1 can ever 1 up this song
You two have the biggest and best smiles on You Tube when you come across something you enjoy!
They were called dire straits because they were skint. So I remember watching on a show.
I really didn't think no one could improve on a song that was already perfect, but Mark knopfler and dire straits did it. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤘🙏
I love how you guys enjoy classic rock. Beautiful reaction ❤
Mr. Knopfler is an absolute brilliant guitarist and songwriter. Somewhat similar style to Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, only in that finger picking. Romeo and Juliet is a brilliant song. Such a poem. Indigo Girls do great cover.
Love this one. All time fav
Thank you my new found friends, yes this what we listened to 47 years ago. I wish I could time warp you back to hear it live. I'm pleased to see that you still get this. If you ever get a chance to see any of these "ancient" performers live, grasp the opportunity. The musicianship will still blow you away! I promise.
Great reaction , you must check out Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love from the same gig . You will not be disappointed
I've watched hundreds of bands play live in my life. Im 52 and Dire Straits live in Dublin Ireland 1991 was the best. Incredible live band
great performance, great reaction!
This was one of the best reactions to the performance. I love watching young people listening to old music. Rock comes in many forms. This is one example of how good a clean guitar can sound. Thanks for an enjoyable time. 🤟😁❤️
Brothers in Arms, Telegraph road, Money for Nothing - great music
Private Investigations, Romeo and Juliet, etc.
Great reaction guys.
Welcome to our rock heaven.
This chick has the prettiest face on the planet. Lord
The drummer here, his dad was in the audience... first time he got to see and hear him play!!!
You too are great....thanks for not interrupting
You have to check out Telegraph Road from this concert!
Thanks guys. 3 things always get me with this vid... Mark Knopfler's virtuoso guitar, the drummer's hands are a blur, and they look so happy playing!
When the band knows it’s that kinda night, they show it.
Mark doesn't use a pick to play guitar, only his fingers and thumbs. Pure genius.
😮 genius? Because he uses his fingers to pick, you think he's the first and only one?😂 Check Robbie Krieger (Doors) and dozens of other 'geniuses'
@@movid Where did I say he was the only one? Read my words before you jump in.
@@jeffstevens4262 well you equated both in the same line... btw Mark's guitar playing is very inspired by JJ Cale's. There are vey few geniuses in music, Mark was a very good player but no genius, really
@@movid I appreciate your opinion. By the way, can you nominate any musical genius's songwriter/performer/storyteller sof the modern day?
@@movidnot even in the same league 😂😂👌
Arrangement is so simple that it can be played over and over again and yet such the best.
If you thought this was amazing, you have to do Telegraph Road from the same concert. It will blow your mind!!!😊
The Art of the Anglo-Saxons, music and literature. For all & always....
MTV in its beginning was dominated by videos of Michael Jackson and Dire Straits… I want my MTV🎶🎵🎼❤️☮️🙏
A little remind of ..Sting if i m not wrong 😊
Really distinctive style. I love Dire Straits. Excellent musicianship all around! If you haven't listened to "Brothers in Arms" you need to check that out.
