I believe you are mistaken. As someone who lived through Rock's golden years from the 50s through to today, and have heard nearly everything there is in this genre, I can tell you this performance IS the greatest performance in history. Mark Knoffler's guitar skills are beyond incredible and so is Terry Williams, the drummer. They are both virtuosos, It's hard to believe that Mark is a self taught guitarist who created his unique fingerpicking style and never learned to read music.
Mark Knopfler's guitar mastery in this performance is nothing short of phenomenal. The way he makes the guitar sing is pure magic. Truly a timeless classic!

Possibly one of the best live albums ever but this live version of Sultans of Swing beats the studio version and is definitely the bands best ever rendition of it by far. Actually, most bands and artists of the 60's and 70's would've been great to see, too. No autotune. Just pure talent. Knopfler is the cleanest and most awe-inspiring guitarist. The fact that he makes it look simple makes it that much better. The rest of the band is on their A game, too. Dire Straits came to win that night. I believe that you can recognize who really pays attention to and values music and its individual parts (vocals, guitar, bass, drums, etc.) when they bring Knopfler into the conversation for greatest guitarist of all time. His solos in this song are so phenomenal it makes me smile every time that I hear them. Punchline: you are right.
you are a very lucky man being in the right place at the right moment, I have 14 first I heard dire straits in 1997 they simply set the bar too high I just can't taste less than that
OK, you guys are now my absolute favorite "reaction" to this performance!!!! Pure honest disbelieve at the extent of the genius of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits!! This is, in my opinion, the greatest live performance ever!! FYI, Knopfler is writer, lead singer and lead guitarist on all of their songs. He plays the guitar without a pick. He is a genius. The drummer here is Terry Williams and his is also one of the greatest all time performances. Your reaction is spot on!!! I have watched at least 50 "reactions" to this song over the last year or so and still get chills every time I watch the performance. What I love about you guys is that I KNOW you will be the same....chills every time. Thanks!!!!
Terry Williams the drummer was on fire as it was the first time his dad came to see him the proudness of your dad seeing you is no match for anything.... so powerful no matter what women say.
I have listened to this performance hundreds of time it just does something for me that I can't explain. Young generations are missing out on so much, it was real music live no computers no shenanigans real talent. Mi personal opinion mine only iam sure others have their own best performances. To me this is bar none the best live performance i have listened to.
There's no head banging here, just pure music played by musicians who enjoy playing for each other. Even though I'm 80 years old, I never tire of listening to Dire Straits
Sometimes humans in whatever field reach their potential..... In music, this is one of those moments in history! No hyperbole, each of these musicians are in the zone, all at the same time. This is as perfect as it can get in our time... BRAVO!
Something this good is probably never to be seen again. Mark knopfler is right up there with the classic greats of their their time like Beethoven and Mozart . This is the modern day equivalent
I was there and it was without a doubt the greatest concert I have ever experienced. Yeah. We were in shock. Mesmerized. Totally lost in the swell of the music. Listening to, who I am certain were, one of the greatest collection of consummate musicians who have ever played together. Love them still. Always and forever.
Not sure if it's true, but there was a story where someone asked Prince what it was like to be the greatest guitarist who ever lived. He said, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Mark Knopfler."
My Dire Straits story... It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
This is the proper version of that great tune by Dire Straits. This version has not only a great guitar. Check out the drums on that. Drums are out of this world.
I actually prefer the original studio version. But the added riff added in the interlude in this version is iconic and a great addition to an already insanely great song.
I'm blessed to have lived through this era. The people in the audience knew all right. Don't forget...we who were lucky enough to experience Dire Straits first hand...they were a part of our lives. ❤❤❤ This level of genius is a shock to you guys. So glad you loved it. 😘😘
Dire straits the first band I ever saw live. Saw the at Wembley Stadium and Mark Knopfler is the reason I took up the guitar at the age of 13. Yes I was just 13 when I saw them live for the first time my very first Stadium concert.
Insanely magical!!! When you hear Mark and Terry and of coarse the others you will NEVER forget it! Thank you guys for giving us this incredible talent to blow our minds!
This performance is just epic. According to Mark Knoepfler, the entire guitar solo he played was completely improvised, just popping up in his mind while being on stage performing the song. Awesome.
@@rajeeb3500 I don’t think you could really appreciate how awesome a performance it was at that moment. Yes! you thought it was amazing, but with time and the ability to se other people’s reaction to the clips that are on RUclips, only then do you see how epic the gig was.
Maybe not that has been recorded, but I'm sure out of all the times he has played this in concerts he has had other great precision performances like this in the past. This is by far my favorite recorded version!
I love the way Mark makes it look so easy. He was clearly having a lot of fun and just letting go, very little jumping around... just playing and singing. I've seen him live several times, and he never disappoints. An amazing songwriter and guitar player. Terry Williams on drums was amazing too, where did he get that much energy?

I am 24. And Dire Straits is my most favourite band ever, Along with Pink Floyd
How I wish I was alive in the 70s. Ugh.
Clapton sounds like a beginner compared to Knopfler if you ask me.
you are a very lucky man being in the right place at the right moment, I have 14 first I heard dire straits in 1997 they simply set the bar too high I just can't taste less than that
Nobody plays like Mark!!
Terry Williams is an OUTSTANDING drummer - I've listened to this several dozens times just to catch all his outstanding fills.
To my knowledge, this is the BEST ever song played live!
Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show
I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
That's quite a story!! Hope life turned out well for you nonetheless.
Best live recording EVER.
This is the proper version of that great tune by Dire Straits. This version has not only a great guitar. Check out the drums on that. Drums are out of this world.
Im just checking to see if there are 80s song NAPPERS HERE ,, They love to claim songs from the 70s AS 80s song by the 100s
I actually prefer the original studio version. But the added riff added in the interlude in this version is iconic and a great addition to an already insanely great song.
A combination of fantastic talents, topped by knopfler’s genius, and Williams sheer violence on the drums…..superb
Every time I see and hear this version I’m blown away by this great band! Mark Knopfler there are no words to describe your incredible talent!!!
It's mesmerizing when the band is having so much fun playing an all-time classic. It's hard to comprehend what it must have felt to be there live.
One of the greatest quitarist in the world. Thank you for sharing this video . The world needs to know this talent .
I'm blessed to have lived through this era. The people in the audience knew all right. Don't forget...we who were lucky enough to experience Dire Straits first hand...they were a part of our lives. ❤❤❤ This level of genius is a shock to you guys. So glad you loved it. 😘😘
Knopfler plays the guitar like we all wish we could.
He makes it cry or sing!
@@taxidude He’s not strictly rhythm.
@@stevelangridge1755 he knows all them fancy chords!
He too knows them fancy chords 😁😁😁
Dire straits the first band I ever saw live. Saw the at Wembley Stadium and Mark Knopfler is the reason I took up the guitar at the age of 13. Yes I was just 13 when I saw them live for the first time my very first Stadium concert.
I’m 73 years young but I loved this song 🎶.Vonnie
Insanely magical!!! When you hear Mark and Terry and of coarse the others you will NEVER forget it! Thank you guys for giving us this incredible talent to blow our minds!
You just witnessed perfection. Mark is a genius. Dire Straits at the top of the game. Loved your reaction.
MARK KNOPFLER is the name, the greatest guitarist ever !!!!!
I wouldn’t say the greatest but definitely one o the greatest
@@noobmaster6664 i would and i did it ;)
You should say "In my opinion" Nothing is fact.
@@legend9335 this is music ,what facts you asking for?!
Not the best but up there surely
Just remember he plays guitar with his fingers & thumb, no plectrum involved. Best guitarist ever.
This performance is just epic. According to Mark Knoepfler, the entire guitar solo he played was completely improvised, just popping up in his mind while being on stage performing the song. Awesome.
I saw then in Barcelona in 1985 and it was amazingly wonderful there is nothing to compare their genius to
Loved their music then and love them now
Sorry to piss you off bros!!!! I WAS THERE………. One of the most memorable gigs I have ever been to.
Ahhh so cool . Did it feel like the unique performance it's now considered at the time ?
@@rajeeb3500 I don’t think you could really appreciate how awesome a performance it was at that moment. Yes! you thought it was amazing, but with time and the ability to se other people’s reaction to the clips that are on RUclips, only then do you see how epic the gig was.
Que inveja, meu Deus, eu choro toda vez que assisto esse vídeo...pura energia !!!
Wow so jealous !!!
Why would anyone be pissed off ?
one must admit, MK never played that song with such precision, speed and passion. That was the day.
Maybe not that has been recorded, but I'm sure out of all the times he has played this in concerts he has had other great precision performances like this in the past. This is by far my favorite recorded version!
@@TheRevFireman630 Yeah he did it note perfect here in Melbourne,1987.
One of the top five guitar performances of all time.
Their reaction is priceless. amazed we lived this music and took it for granted. how lucky we were.
Best live performance in Rock music..EVER!!!!
Wait until you have heard the full Academy Live session!!!! M-A-G-I-C!
@@edjones7709 yes
Totally seamless performance. Terry Williams’s drumming is amazing and Mark’s guitar work is next level. Mesmerising.
The best live performance ever.
I’ve never seen someone finger pick quite like him. He’s a master......
There's only one other. Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac
@@claudioortiz9007 actually true :-D
Roy Clark and Glenn Campbell enter the chat...
Seriously, look up Glenn Campbell playing the William Tell Overture. There’s a version he plays it on a 12 string and plays part of it over his head!
@Paul Olsen. Totally true, but I was only referring to Rock Groups. If you're talking country there's just too many good pickers to choose from.
Obviously my ex wife has....
Watching your guys reaction to this video makes an old man happy...Possibly the greatest live guitar performance ever caught on video and no slight meant towards drums and keyboards... Terry Williams must have been exhausted!!
Best album ever, best band ever, a legend. i listen to it for 25 years, always such a pleasure. Thank you Mark.
Best live performance ever, that piece sends chills down my back.
"Brothers in arms" "Telegraph road" "Romeo and Juliet"
Dont forget Money for Nothing
And Tunnel of Love
Dire Straits best band all times.
On every street!!!! My favorite
down to the waterline
One of the most classic all star tunes & lyrics of the rock era. Incredible energy. Brilliant playing.
Telegraph Road from the same concert is epic with an even better and longer solo . Best song ever cheers
Yes for telegraph road, but the studio version is the more epic one !
Either Or, both are just stomping
@@DefakatorOfficiel damned, il est partout, il est ubik, il rétablit l'ordre et l'équilibre dans la galaxie !!! et la bise à l'ami du bon goût au passage ! Telegraph road et Private investigation rhâââââ lovely !
Telegraph Road My favourite song of Dire Straits. Live, studio, humming in my head, no matter how.

One of the best musical performances of all time. Thank you for sharing it with the world!
That stage is just crammed with talent, pure and simple
We 70 year olds are sad you only get to experience our music 2nd hand. Happy to have been young at this time. We had an absolute blast then😂😂😂😂. It was as good as you imagine it to have been❤
Without a doubt a live drumming performance beyond compare !! Truly awesome
Masterpiece….never to be rivalled.

Miss the good concerts after all...
Sencirly :-)
Best live performance i have ever seen.
Every time this video shows up I have to watch it again and every time I'm exhausted at the end. It's one of the top 10 best live concerts I've seen, on video or in person.
I am so glad you recognized the drummer. He definitely kicks ass in this song. His nickname is pick. And by the way the lead guitarist doesn't use a pick. It's all finger-picking! LOL. Love you guys. Great shows
Just watching this sublime performance on film can be overwhelming imagine how those lucky people in the audience must feel
I just love how the drummer is just killing those drums in this one. I mean, what did those drums do to him!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
THANKS!!!!
I never believed in reincarnation but I think Adolf was reincarnated as that drum kit and Terry is giving him a good thrashing for being a naughty boy 😂
Best Version Ever..!!! Mark Knopfler Guitar Master...!!! 🎸🎼
