Such tender fingertips 🙏 Mark Knopfler brought back guitar solos after a long hiatus. And he did it all himself - what a humble and predigious talent .. a guitarist's guitarists.

Love you guys ❤️Where Have All The Flowers Gone? by Joan Baez. Some in the world think Americans love war because we seem to be in it....constantly. Our brothers, sons and fathers have died on foreign soils in war after God forsaken war. Russia is a dick. Not the people, the government. Anyway, I am so sorry you had to experience that. Love to you both.😢☮️❤️❤️❤️

I think the song is written in the first person. A soldier who is dying in these mist covered mountains, his home now and forever. His thoughts are so poignant and powerful. He seems at peace with his ending while thinking of his brothers in arms and the world he is leaving behind. Sung so softly with that crying guitar, it is beyond heartbreaking. Impossible for me to listen to without tearing up.

Helene here: George...I knew when you started to cry.....I remember your beautiful country and it’s war with Russia...I know a bit about the history of your part of the world...so beautiful but has seen so much suffering and sadness. The vast majority of Americans now living have no personal experience with war, but I know that you and your countrymen do. I cried along with you.....I so much wish that humanity could move past hate and violence .....our inheritance from our past that will prove our undoing if we cannot rise above it.
The biggest compliment that I can pay Knopfler and his guitar work here is that he grabbed a good chunk of Gilmore’s mastery of his instrument, and made his guitar speak to us of sadness and regret and yearning for a better world.

Oh I can't stop it. My dad fought in the Pacific in WWII and my brother fought in Vietnam. I saw how it affected them but they were both proud. My dad was buried at age 92 with full military honors and and a letter to us from President Obama. They stayed in touch with their brothers-in-arms forever, my dad into his 90s. My brother went up the river like in Apocalypse Now. It transformed him. He saw his friend blown up right beside him. We stayed in touch during the entire time he was in the service by letters. We are best friends today. I love them both so much!

I'm not sure if the original album track was longer, I have a feeling it might have been. Of course Dire Straits did many versions of the song (like all their songs) in the course of their live performances, and some of them were much longer. One of the better long ones (IMO) was their 'On the Night' recording: ruclips.net/video/q2rx3IAEISA/видео.html

This. When you have the chance, listen to the album version with the full intro and outro. A powerful song that always hits me. The way Mark Knopfler makes that guitar cry is art at its highest form.

I thought it was only on DVD and was titled "A Night in London" The addition of the string quartet in that performance exponentially amplifies the soulful playing of Mark and Dire Straits...

Thank you so much. I'd always loved this song but had never heard of the "On the night" album.
"Brothers in Arms (On the Night)" was fantastic. Easily better than the studio version IMO.
      Thank you again.

It makes me emotional and only listened to it because it is you guys. I came of age watching tv every evening as they gave the numbers of our men killed that day in Vietnam. When the war ended my generation thought maybe the world would give peace a chance and we would see no more war. Then came Faulkland and your generation's brothers in arms. Now we have Ukraine.
So never try to stop the teard when you hear this song.

I can't get through this song without shedding heart-felt tears. My husband is a Vietnam Vet and, thankfully, he returned home unscathed, to our baby girl and me. We've been married 61 years, now and I don't know where the time went.

Mark is such a lyrical & emotional guitarist. This was a great piece of music relating to anti-war & how crazy it is but at the same time supporting all brothers in arms no matter who or where they are. When will man or world leaders realise WAR IS INSANE!!!!! But I appreciate & love to see your reaction to this music from so long ago x

This song makes me emotional because I served in the USMC in the late 70's. All my Staff NCO's were Korean and Vietnam combat veterans. I saw the pain in their eyes , they were treated the worst of any veterans in history. Back then no one thanked them for their service to the USA. I didn't stay in the USMC because of the way we were treated by our government and citizens of this country. Know a days everyone wants to thank me for my service. And I tell them to thank the veterans who trained me for combat. They deserve it way more than me, I didn't have to experience the horror of war because of them. I joined the USMC in 1978 when no one was thanking any of us for our service. I went to 6 other countries and felt more respect from those people than I did in my own country. The Australians treated us the best out of all of them. Because there citizens respect their veterans more than America. I'm sorry if my words insult you but that's how it was for my brothers in arms.

I’ve had this record in every format- starting with the cassette in 1985, CD in 1990, iTunes in 2006 (for me), and now on double speed mastered vinyl. I know every inch of these songs which are now in my DNA, yet somehow I have never seen this video! Pretty cool. This is my favorite track on the record, too.

Ive been listening to this song for 35 years. I used to sing it to my baby's to help them to sleep and even still it chokes me up. Watching your reaction video brung me to tears again as the song always has but for the first time ever i felt that someone else was affected in the the same way i have always been by this song. Mark Knofler is a once in a lifetime genious and captured everything profound about war destructiin and brotherhood in one song. Peace be with you both. Hope uou stay safe.

Mark Knopfler wrote this about the Falklands war between Britain and Argentina.
It's a dying soldier talking to the soldiers around him, his brothers in arms.
    Heartbreaking.....
