This was written in 1982 at the time of the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina, the backstory is of a soldier dying on the battlefield, he is thinking about his life, his comrades around him and won't leave him, it has become a sort of unofficial anthem for servicemen in that you never leave anyone behind, you bring your brother home, the song highlights how senseless and wasteful war is, a huge thank you to all men and women for their service, deepest sympathy to those who have lost someone ❤

I consider myself as one of the oldest Dire Straits fans. Since 1980, when I heard Sultans of Swing for the first time and I didn't even know who they were, it took me almost half a year to figure that out. And they are still one of the greatest bands ever.

Dire Straits is one of the few bands that can really play with your emotions either happy or sad. It doesn't matter because they pour their soul in to their music and narrating/ singing, he's really a story teller and the guitar is the emotions. It's good to see it makes us cry because it's a sign it's a masterpiece and also that we're all human.

Knopfler is amazing. For me, he is in the same league as David Gilmour - although they play different guitars with different styles, they both can touch your deepest emotions with just a couple of notes. This song always makes me cry (you're not alone in weeping to the music, Andrei!) I have long wished that Knopfler and Gilmour would team up - can you imagine them on stage together, riffing off each other? I'd pay a lot and travel far to see that. Love your reactions, keep them coming!

It's a great shame that the only time I'm aware of where the two have been seen playing together is in a comedy sketch, funny though that sketch is. Apparently Mark even used Dave's rig during it. It's on RUclips. Just search for Knopfler Gilmour Sketch.

Dire straits is one of the good bands they reminded us to the golden era (years between 80’s and 90’s), they have a lot of good songs like Tunnel Of Love, and Money For Nothing and many other songs.
As i said before, your reaction still the best and plenty of emotions and too much vibes.

The great Mark Knopfler on guitar and lead vocals. Another one of the truly great guitarists of the progressive rock era. Check out "Romeo and Juliet" and "Once Upon a Time in the West" by dire straits.

Love this reaction! Some won't understand - but some people just listen to music, some really like music but some people really FEEL the music and Andrei is one of those people. Music transcends race, religion or politics and touches your soul! I don't know if you play and instrument Andrei - but if you don't you should! Those who truly feel music make the best musicians. 🤘🤘🤘

I still cry when I listen to this song. It is a song that always elicits deep emotion, it doesn't matter what age, what race, religion, color or creed. This is the magic of brilliant music, from the story telling to the instrumental arrangements, Dire Straits were 1 of the greatest bands to ever tug at a heart string. I loved your guys reaction.

Mark Knopfler is so sweet and soft with his guitar, this band is totally timeless, I think their songs will never get old
(And the word you were searching is guitar pick ;-) )

Mark Knopfler is truly a musical genius. His composing and performing skills are indeed sublime. Not only his works with Dire Straights, but solo and he has even written scores for motion pictures. Here is a live performance that displays his talent well - he has the ability to create delicate yet haunting phrases with the guitar:

This is a theme from a motion picture he wrote. It is instrumental only, and depicts images of northern Scotland. Many people either request or play this at their or loved one's funerals:

I have to say something. I use this song as a test of what kind of person I'm dealing with at the moment. If this song doesn't make you feel the grief of ages of humanity, there is something broken in you. Be grateful that your not one of them. We need fully functioning adults to meet today's challenges. It's a relief to know you are among them.

I first heard this song back in the mid 1980s, and even after hearing it over 100 times it still hits me emotionally. Musically, I love how it feels like a duet between the singer and the guitar.

This is one of those songs that definitely plays on your heartstrings. Now that you have heard the original by the band that wrote and presented it you MUST find and listen to it as performed by Home Free. It is even more deeply moving than the original for me. One of those pieces of music that gets right down into your soul and you will NEVER forget it.
