I'm 72 years old. I've listened to thousands of songs over the years and this is still my favorite...no close second. It speaks to me emotionally that defies me putting it into words. I relate to it on a very deep level. Thank you!
BEST reaction ever! Finally, someone who actually understands what the word "react" means! Thank you young man! It was beautiful to watch your pure reactions. Thank you from an old grandma.
One of the most unique and sobering songs I've ever heard. It has meant a lot to several friends who were in the "Service" back then. Mark is famous for playing a Fender Stratocaster, but makes that Gibson Les Paul cry beautifully in this song. Nice choice.
Played at many UK service and ex service personnel funerals. I've got it booked in for mine when the time comes. Mark wrote this from the perspective of a dying soldier surrounded by his mates on the battlefield, in the'82 Falklands war. The live version at the Mandela birthday concert with Eric Clapton, was a masterclass.
Such a haunting song that has become an adopted anthem for service men and women, written at the time of the Falklands War between Argentina and Britain, the back story for this is of a soldier laying dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades who will not leave him, the moral being you never leave anyone behind, you bring them home, may I suggest you check out the version of this by the Band's of the HM Royal Marines, it is so moving being played and sung by the military, thank you to all ex and current personnel for their service 🇬🇧
"These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Someday you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn to be Brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battle raged high And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell and The moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line in your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms"
A thoughtful reaction where you listened to the music and words instead of jumping in with comments every few seconds like others. Appreciated it and so subscribed.
One of not the Most beautifull deep and amazingly soulfull ballad ever ! and with some amazing messages in it as well.If you cant feel this song you got a heart of stone.
The lyrics are from the voice of a solider who is dying in the Falkland war so he will not live to return to his valley in England. There are so many worlds, but we have just one but we live in different worlds...we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms 😢❤
Mark Knoefler wrote this song about the Falkland Islands war, between Great Britain and Argentina, which occurred during the height of Dire Straits creative power. I am a veteran, but did not fight in any war. This song tears at my heart....
I recall living in London whilst at Uni in the early eighties listening to news about the Falklands war . Listening to Dire Straits was de rigeur for us Brits back then and they were magical then and are still. We definitely had the best bands back then !
Good reaction, and thanks for not repeatedly stopping in the middle of the song. This one brings a tear to my eye and I'm not even a vet. Knopfler doesn't play a lot of notes but they all have feeling.
Music videos can be risky since they frequently suck and drop the quality of the song experience a notch or two, but this one is fantastic ! They used a technique called “rotoscoping”. It won the Grammy in 87’ for Best Music Video.
Mark Knopfler just released a new album, One Deep River. He may look like just some average senior citizen now, but his song writing genius and his mad guitar skills are as sharp as ever.
I just read that this song was done at a concert for Nelson Mandela’s seventieth birthday. It was so popular in South Africa that the powers that be asked who should get the royalties. When Mark said “Amnesty International” they were banned from performing in that country. I believe South Africa has improved somewhat since about their racism problem.
Your thoughts on this song are just what we have come to expect from you, insightful, intelligent, comprehensive covering all aspects of the song without over doing it with wasted nonsense (like many other reactors) with a pleasant friendly attitude and some like your smile, I like that you make me smile with the great content you create. Thanks again.
How come you never heard this one before? It is a such known song.. they may play this on my funeral. One of the best songs I’ve heard. My personal taste of course. 😁👍🤜
Humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society - “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens. ( Baha'i Faith)
Definitely the song Ride Across The River is the most overlooked masterpiece of theirs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reaction of it. It should be shared more.
Mark is an increadable guitarist. Thanks for your reaction. I suggest listening to their Alchemy tour live, it's one of the best in history, phenomenal. 😊
Live version needs to be checked out - either the Mandela concert from 1988 [with Eric Clapton in the band] or from the On Every Street tour in 1992/3 are my preferred ones.
It must have been dusty there.. I saw the eye wipe! Brilliant and poignant in equal measure. I also like how you always let the music play without pausing 👍 I would also recommend Telegraph Road by Dire Straits, specifically the Alchemy Tour version. Another cracking tune with a strong narrative
If you like old southern blues and Led Zeppelin, the bands bassist John Paul Jones, did a remake of WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS, for world music. It's recorded with musicians around the world 🌎. A must listen.
This short version has the benefit of the video but I'd recommend that you a live version of this song. Many may disagree with me but, for me at least, the "On The Night, 1993" video is the best.
You only have one song in your Playlist from one of the most influential iconic bands ever... The DOORS. It will blow your mind as it did everyone who first heard a song that was banned from radio due to the lyrics, full length version 11min 43sec (as you always do) off the first album..... "The End"
For your own knowledge about the greatest musical group in history, this is the best documentary I have seen, and I've seen most of them. Well worth your time to learn why they are what they are..... How the Beatles Changed the World (Documentary) | Amplified
Its about the Falklands War between the UK and Argentina, 1982. Equally as haunting, but in a different way, is Home Free's cover of this song. It will bring a tear to your eyes. Make sure you have a tissue handy. ruclips.net/video/_ChD2WjD2tY/видео.htmlfeature=shared
There's a group of anti war songs I link together. All give variations on the mood The Firm "live in peace" (maybe my favorite) Jonatha Brook and the story, "war" (a quieter, more introspective song) Billy Joel, "goodnight Saigon" (gives emotions more like this song)
Just one criticism of the way Knopfler skips/trips out the word "brothers" far too quickly. That key lyric/title word is surely screaming to be delivered slowly - softly drawled out - not delivered quickly tripping off the tongue pop-music-style the way Knopfler does. It just doesn't fit the very sombre mood or vibe. I wonder if he changed that in any later older-wiser live versions. Paul G
If you've never heard a guitar weep, you just heard it. The words tell the story, and the guitar expresses the emotion. Perfection.
Yes, it is!!!
Being British and ex military from the early 80's this song reduces me to tears every time, that is when you know the music is something special.
Thank you for letting the song play without interrupting! Much appreciated.
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters in all of Rock!
I'm 72 years old. I've listened to thousands of songs over the years and this is still my favorite...no close second. It speaks to me emotionally that defies me putting it into words. I relate to it on a very deep level. Thank you!

songs like this make you think and appreciate the fact that your country has not been at war since 1945. I wish peace to the rest of the nations too!
"These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Someday you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn to be
Brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the sun's gone to hell and
The moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms"
You won’t find a more expressive guitarist than Mark Knopfler.
His voice was perfect for this song
Mark Knopfler knows how to make a guitar cry better than anyone
I used to listen this album before sleep every night as a young teenager. Transcendent.
I have been listening to this song since it was released and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Good choice.
JMBoy I reallyl love your reactions. You seem to feel the songs in a deep way. Keep up the good work, man.
I love how the chains that shackle his hands become the guitar that FREES his hands!! ❤
A thoughtful reaction where you listened to the music and words instead of jumping in with comments every few seconds like others. Appreciated it and so subscribed.

By far the best concert of my life was seeing Dire Straits tour when this album came out - and the opening act was the Great Stevie Ray Vaughan !!!
Good reaction, and thanks for not repeatedly stopping in the middle of the song. This one brings a tear to my eye and I'm not even a vet. Knopfler doesn't play a lot of notes but they all have feeling.

Your reaction was 🔥
Fine comments. One of the best anti-war songs ever written. This should be played at every Veteran's Day event.
This song is so haunting! Beautiful!
I just stumbled upon your reactions, but I'm really enjoying them, thx.
One of the best guitar players of our generation
One of my all-time favorite songs ❤
Mark Knopfler just released a new album, One Deep River. He may look like just some average senior citizen now, but his song writing genius and his mad guitar skills are as sharp as ever.
You get it!!
One of the best songs ever written, both lyrics and music. Mark Knoeffler is my favorite guitarist Bruce

Yeah, by blacks killing the white farmers. So no it hasn't improved.

He caresses the guitar as he gently embraces the lost souls who will never be born.
Storytelling at its best and accompanied by the wonderful sounds of a Les Paul.
Thank you for listening to the whole song before commenting on it. Appreciated.
Great reaction, thank you!!!
Espectacular , excelente gracias por compartir saludos desde Argentina.
Excellent job Always live or Video 50s threw 80s 😊
We are folls to make war on our brothers in arms 😢
Tíme, when I was coming back Home (in Slovakia) from Czech Army .. 1984 🙂
How come you never heard this one before? It is a such known song.. they may play this on my funeral. One of the best songs I’ve heard. My personal taste of course. 😁👍🤜
Mark Knopfler wrote this as a response to the Falklands War between Argentina and the UK
Great song choice around Veterans Day.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
Knopfler is one of the best musicians and guitar players of all time. Both acoustic and electric which is rare.
Humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society - “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens. ( Baha'i Faith)
I liked your thoughts on this song and agree with what you said.
Excellent reaction...check out "Ride Across the River" & "You're Latest Trick" ...always uplifting tuning into your channel

great band. great song.
Oh, you might like to see Home Free's cover of this song. They are a FANTASTIC a capella band.

Nice reaction. I’m interested to see your reaction to the official video of Bjork “play dead” and Sting “Desert Rose”
Thats a powerful song... Britain was regaining the Falkland Islands from the Argentinian Forces. It hits a lot of buttons.
Wow! Thank you, this song is a masterpiece, I am going to David Bowie!!!!!! ❤
I always say. Listen carefully, brother. live. this band live..
I love everything I’ve heard from him. So much more than Sultans of Swing. What is the best album by Dire Straights?
Check out Knopfler's solo album "Sailing to Philadelphia"
This short version has the benefit of the video but I'd recommend that you a live version of this song. Many may disagree with me but, for me at least, the "On The Night, 1993" video is the best.
You're right - and I am one of the many! 😉 Mandela concert and Wembley '85 versions are far better. OTN was remixed and a Frankenstein show.
@@DavidG-u2k Congratulations on being one of the many who disagree with me.
The 8 min verz is better cheers you onto it yo !
Do Skateaway from the Making Movies LP. Thanks

You have Ears to hearing (I think) Jesus 🙂
Just one criticism of the way Knopfler skips/trips out the word "brothers" far too quickly. That key lyric/title word is surely screaming to be delivered slowly - softly drawled out - not delivered quickly tripping off the tongue pop-music-style the way Knopfler does. It just doesn't fit the very sombre mood or vibe.
I wonder if he changed that in any later older-wiser live versions.

Told from a dying soldier's perspective. Send the video to Putin.
That situation is not what the mainstream media has told Westerners that it is. Zelensky is no angel - just a puppet of the N W 0.
Free palestine 😢
