My wife says I’m stuck in the 80’s. Nope, stuck implies you can’t get out. I’m totally there by choice.
No one can tell me that there is or ever has been a better guitarist than Mark Knopfler.
The feel he has for every note is unmatched.
I am 72 years old and this has been my favourite band for 45 years. It gladdens my heart to see young people like you enjoying so much, the same music I enjoyed when I was your age!!
the best pop/rock song ever written!!!!
It’s my dad’s favourite band as well and he is 78 all the way from Australia
I'm an old lady of 74, Dire Straits were amazing in my 30's, the 1980's.
I'm watching on here and these live performances are before their time, absolutely amazing, TELEGRAPH ROAD is out of this world.
Mr Knopfler is a genius...
@@jennywren7822 Agree on TELEGRAPH ROAD. Used to drive my car on the motorway with it full volume. That and TUNNEL OF LOVE from ALCHEMY LIVE. Those were the days!!!
epic tune
I am 70 years of age, I am in tears, as I am always when this touches my heart. I live Mark Knopfler I love Dire Straits. I die knowing I have heard the best.
With great respect for David Gilmour, this is the most beautiful guitar solo ever........EVER!
You and I have been blessed to live in the times we do. The likes of Dire Straits and Pink Floyd will never be seen again.
Mark Knopfler is the J.S. Bach of rock music. No other lead guitarist has his lyrical expression and originality.
Nils Lofgren does some wild things with a guitar too.
@@paulhare662 Well Nils was lucky enough to be on stage with DS during 85 world tour on Wembly. He is fine player but...

Very sad to see in the news that Jack Sonni, who played guitar with Dire Straits in this performance died on Wednesday August 30, 2023, he was only 68. He played with them at Live Aid and he also played on the band's 1985 album Brothers in Arms, one of the UK's all time, best selling albums. He also accompanied them on the subsequent tour, RIP Jack Sonni.
This is one of the extremely Rare bands, where their live performances sounded and were even better than the Recordings ! What Music Legends,so happy to see you enjoying this .
I was 14 when I first heard Dire Straits - an Achemy cassette smuggled into Russia. 53 now and Mark Knopfler is daily in my life, through good and bad times.
I was 14 back in 1980 - Making Movies was my first album - so thats my connection with you from England to Russia ❤
I'm 65 now and, like Mark Knopfler, I used to hang out at The Spanish City in Whitley Bay when I was a kid. I live in the USA now and this song always brings tears to my eyes remembering the good times in the 70's and 80's. Hearing "Going Home" (theme song of "Local Hero") at every Newcastle united home game (on TV unfortunately) keeps Mark's beautiful guitar sound always fresh in my head!
I'm an international student in Manchester, and one of the first places I visited after coming to the UK was Whitley Bay. It's absolutely beautiful and seeing the lyrics of this song written on the pavement made me so happy. I hope you are doing great and have heard the new version of Going Home with all the guitarists!
My fav Dire Straits song by quite some miles. Close your eyes, listen to the sentence " Girl you look so pretty to me, like you always did " while thinking about the love of your life. We can cry together homie.
Oh yes🔥🎶😍
The only thing is that he's not talking about the girl when he says this, he's talking about the carnival "Spanish city" in new castle.
That's why he says: Girl "it" looks so pretty to me,
Like "it" always did, like the Spanish city to me, when we were kids...
Couldn't have put it better ❤️
yes i did. even before reading this comment. it just comes naturally. i love Jana. i still love her. She wrote poems to me. Somehow we lost contact for a while now.
She is somewhere else now in this world. Sometimes i dream we meet each other again. maybe. we will see.
@@davidmoon6096 I truly hope you meet her again, my friend
Mark stopped playing this masterpiece after his father passed away. Because it was his favorite song of the band. I think it was to emotional for Mark. It is an emotional song anyway. I don't recall ever heard such an beautifull guitar solo. Damn, he nailed it! 👍👍❤❤
I did not know this story.
Marks tribute to his father it doesn't come any better than that beautiful
exept this is not true, mark has played this song even after his father passed but now he has not enough energy to give the song justice. Take a look at sultans of swing for example, even this song he almost struggles to play nowdays.
@@DeT0ast it is true. He did not stop playing exactly at the day his father was passed but not long after it. He said it himself in some interview I read somewhere at that time.
Mark makes his guitar sing. My favorite guitarist.
Mark knopfler is a genius. Saw dire straits back in the days on 92. It was spectacular. Long live to my sultan
Let’s not forget the other musicians,Terry Williams was unbelievable as was Alan Clark,Hal Lindes & Mel Collins. His band played every instrument possible & they were all brilliant.Which other rock band plays the flute, violin, trumpet, mandolin or double bass? It works & he always acknowledges their talents & thanks them. His band the best-as is Mark.
Hal Lindes was no longer with the band, that's Jack Sonni on rhythm guitar.
Thanks so much for reacting to one of my most favorite Dire Straits songs, guys!💗💕 So glad that you enjoyed it too!😃
And it's not even the best version of this wonderful song!
no matter how many times i listen to dire straits. iam 30 now and I've been a fan of dire straits since i was 21.. my love for them always gets higher . such cool cool band ever
@@jjc5407that's true, at the Tour On every Street he plays the Tunnel of Love the last time (this is the year Mark his Vader died) this time I think it plays it with so many love and so good picking, it was great and I see on this Tour 3 Times Dire Straits!
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits on two different tours in the 80s, and I’ve seen Mark Knopfler solo four times with his solo band since 2005. Even though we’ll never see a Dire Straits reunion, Mark has a great band and is a must see live if you get the chance. He doesn’t sound like anyone who came before him, and nobody sounds like him. His touch on the guitar is instantly recognizable, even when playing as a guest on other artists songs. The Dire Straits catalog is worth exploring, but so is his solo work. His lyrics and songwriting are just as important as his guitar playing. An artist of the highest caliber whose music will always be in my rotation with a handful of other artists.
Got to see him just a few months before all the lock downs. It was a great show!
You are blessed 🥲
Knopfler is, in my opinion, the world's most underrated guitarist. Few speak about him as a true great but he's right up there for me. Incredible technique, expression and a totally unique performer. You know it's mark within a few notes. He's a total genius.
Couldn't agree more. He's the best🎸🔥
I agree. He makes that guitar sing. What a band. So much talent throughout. Wish I could go to that gig now. 😔
The comments below are outstanding. I only want to add that it is a rare occurrence that so many people agree on anything, but we do on this and at such a level. His performance is so powerful that it unites in recognition of genius and beauty. That’s quite an accomplishment.
Recognised a snatch of "Stop..in the name of Love, before you break my heart"...and a waltz...Can't remember the name!
@@margaretflounders8510 The Carousel Waltz by Rogers and Hammerstein
When the Spanish City was recently refurbished they carved some of the lyrics from Tunnel of Love into the stone work - there is film of Mark Knopfler going back to see the inscription with Brian Johnson from AC/DC when he didn't even know it was there.
That is a video everyone needs to see, two masters of their trades having a genuine great time and respecting their talents.
spian citi in barceoanas ¿¿¿
Yes, that's a lovely video. I used to visit the Spanish City funfair when I was young. We went to Whitley Bay a lot. My dad came from the North East of England, like Mark Knopfler.
I'm 22yo now and I always loved Dire Straits, I'm thankful for my dad who played their songs everytime when we took the car
The fairground, he is singing about, is still there in his (then) home town and they still broadcast this piece of music as they open up every day❤️
Sadly the fairground has long gone, though the location of the Spanish City is still there. It has been refurbished and is mostly bars and restaurants. I walked the same streets as Mark as a kid in the 60s and early 70s. My last trip to the Spanish City was in 1975 with my Army buddies before my first tour of Northern Ireland we were all around 18 or 19,. We were all a little drunk and the girls were fun. Sadly not everyone came home.
@@georgemcpherson8505 Thank you for your service, from another North Englander.
In case you didn't know, "Tunnel of Love" was a standard carnival ride -- cars on a track through a dark building, with occasional startling frights to cause the young couple to grab each other. It was an excuse for existing couples to smooch in private, and not-yet-couples to break the ice. The organ carousel music at the beginning is meant to invoke that carnival atmosphere.
Excellent information. Thanks for sharing.
Music at the beginning is from Rogers and Hammerstein’s “The Carousel Waltz”
Mark does this a lot through his songwriting and arrangements. For example, he wrote Speedway at Nazareth in the early 90´s, still Dire Straits back then. It never became a DS song but the track finally got there on his best selling solo album Sailing To Philadelphia. The track is building up quite litterally, the travelling from race track to race track, then the event is building up and about to start. The lyrics stop and the race starts, the atmosphere is building up to a climax, one more layer of excellent music, the white flag drops for the last lap.. the music stops suddenly and the race/song is over.
He´s absolutely a genius on the guitar, but maybe even more as a songwriter/composer !
Anybody else notice “Stop, in the Name of Love” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” at the beginning? I’ve never heard the vision before. Thank you. ❤️🔥🔥
Since Mark and Eric Burdon are both from Newcastle I wonder if they know each other.
He's unreal when he does that. I remember in 1991 in Australia when in the middle of Calling Elvis, Mark played on his guitar Waltzing Matilda which is an iconic tune here in Oz. Mark's the best. Cheers
@@MinistryOfDarkness11 Is there a clip of that? I love to hear that!
@@larairina5142 I tried to find a good quality clip of the Australian leg of the on every Street tour on RUclips. Didn't have any luck I'm afraid. You might have better luck. Sorry about that.
@@MinistryOfDarkness11 Don't worry. Thanks a lot for trying!!
Best melodic guitar player in history of all time there will never be another he is it!!! the best enough said thanks guys again!!!
The Spanish City has engraved some of the lyrics onto the pavement leading up to the funfair. It’s beautiful. It’s on a you tube video with Brian Johnson I think.
I am obsessed with this song!! I love this song I love Dire Straits!! thanks guys
A masterpiece, like so many Dire Straits efforts. Creating moods, joy, controlling the tempo perfectly. Mark never misses a chance to enhance the song with genius skills. Clean, pure, excellent. Thank you
This concert was Dire Straits at their absolute peak.....the whole show is flawless.....you can tell they were so well rehearsed for this tour....plus the version of Brothers in Arms from this concert is the best you'll ever see.....plus.....in the intro...when Mark is talking about his childhood....you can half tell he's uncomfortable somewhat....rushed....then he lets his guitar tell the story.....it's always been his first voice......his vocals always felt like they were layered around his guitar.
Once Upon A Time In The West from Alchemy. Enough said. Private Investigations. Romeo n Juliet will make you cry, that’s a true story from his experience. What It Is from his solo album is awesome.
What a band - I love your reactions to Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is a genius - I am from Newcastle and this gives me the chills every time I hear it.
This brings back so many memories of the Spanish City from my childhood. Fantastic times. I like his shoutout to the Town Moor too. As I remember it always rained when we went to the shows there 😏🙂
the greatest pop rock track ever written in my opinion!
@@lunapuella2611 Mark grew up in Blyth, where I lived as a kid. This song is so evocative, going to the Spanish City when we were kids is just the best days of my childhood.
@@jenscee7679 I grew up in Newbiggin. There were so many fantastic places to go in Northumberland but there was something particularly exciting about going to the Spanish City 🙂
Rightly so
Mark has the most beautiful way of playing. His style is soothing and beautiful.
Knopfler can make a guitar sing…..genius…simply, genius…I was lucky enough to see them live….phenominal
Mark finger picks the guitar like he's playing a banjo, which is part of what gives his playing such a unique and readily recognizable sound.
It’s great to hear young guys have a real appreciation for the greatness of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. I stumbled upon you two gentlemen reacting to a couple of Dire Straits songs. I liked and subscribed. This song is a masterpiece! Mark pulls emotions out of you with his leads. I was lucky enough to see DS and Mark live four times over the last forty years. Those shows are among the best moments of my life. Thank you very much and all the best to you!
And then we are some old bastards, who grew up on this stuff.
Damn we were lucky!
Indeed
I just feel blessed that I had these amazing bands as the backdrop to my youth, through the 70's and 80's.
Me too🎶🔥
The only band who could play better live than their studio albums. I was there at Wembley in '85. Phenomenal concert. Mark Knopfler is a god on the guitar. One of my all time favourite bands who are so tight live.
also iron maiden, metallica and pantera sounds better live than studio
@@marcoamadio5630 I think I should add ACDC to that list as well.
@@colingoode3702 well, they ever used only 4 chords so no, the answer is NO
No, wrong. Rush sounds better live than their studio recordings. So Dire Straits and Rush are equal.
I would add Led Zeppelin. Dire Straits, one of the very best and a personal favourite for 40 years.
Brilliant ! No other words for it .
That crescendo at the end, and what a beautiful solo, powerful romantic song, Mark Knopfler is not only in a class of his own on guitar but he's also an awesome songwriter. Amazing live performance by the band
The fact he plays all of this clean without breaking a sweat always amazes me
Seeing a lot of people suggesting the later songs, but honestly lads their best stuff is from the first few albums. Gotta check out literally any song they’re all class and they’ll definitely get views 😂😂
A song no one reacts to thats incredible by dire straits is On Every Street live On the Night. You won't be disappointed and maybe introduce another amazing dire straits to more people.
Great track and the live performance is mega. You and Your Friend is another favourite of mine
This song is a true masterpiece in both composition and performance. Mark Knopfler showed his true guitar genius even at the time of recording it in NYC (1980). The whole song is composed in 3 parts: the intro by Rodgers/Hammerstein "Carousel" waltz, the middle portion and the brilliant guitar solo at the end. What gave the magnificent texture to the solo is Mark's Schecter Strat guitar. The entire song is his ode to his childhood memories of going to a carnival with his parents... Now, get this: the words of the song are permanently etched in the concrete apron on the steps near the carnival location in Newcastle! An ultimate tribute to a virtuoso.
One of the great songs about being a teenager.
I LOVE that they used “stop in the name of love” intro fits perfectly in that intro
pianoland, drumland, guitarland, kids on carousels, genius with a fantastic crescendo of a conclusion.
Nice touch by Mark to throw in a rift from "Stop, In The Name Of Love" in the intro solo. The waltz at the beginning is the Carousel Waltz by Rogers and Hammerstein. I can't listen to this song enough times.
Dire Straits is a drug. Once you get it, you're hooked.
Love that drug ❤❤❤❤❤
This is an experience, its magnificent, and you have to remember Mr Knopfler wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang and played his guitar as only he can, all of this magnificent epic performance came from Mark.
The mans a GENIUS, no other word for him.
Long may he reign..
Great review lads
Give “Lady writer” a go next! Will not disappoint!
I love that you guys love them as much as I do! You get it!
I could ride the lengthy and incredibly beautiful ending of this live version forever .... or at least until the day I die ... and it would be with the biggest smile I have ever had in my life ....
I know this is an awesome song by one of the best bands and guitarists in Mark Knopfler
Image how much more it means to me having grown up and lived in Newcastle my whole life and went to the Spanish City in the early 80's experiencing this in real life.
Every time I listen its like a time machine back to simpler times
My Dad's fave song. Any man that does not tear up at the start of that guitar solo at the end, you are not alive
I have watched this many times and still tear up
My best rock band!! my favorite music of Dire Straits and muy best version of Tunnel of Love!! Amazing!!
I grew up in the best Era. I've been listening to this band for 40+ plus and it never gets old.So glad the younger generation appreciates the raw talent of Mark Knopfler and company.
React to a live performance of "Romeo And Juliet". It will change your life.
Alchemy version! I prefer the Alchemy version of Tunnel of Love too.
Best version hands down would be the "On The Night" performance with Chris Whites unbelievable alto and then tenor sax solos.
@@brendanfromnz Agreed.
@@brendanfromnz I think the "On The Night" version is the best but I recognize that I miss the final solo
@@brendanfromnz The Best Performance is Live in Sydney. Of course with Chris
Longer the better. A line in Sultans says it all... make a guitar cry or sing.... that is what Mark does. This is his music. His friends are like minded.
I know it’s a phrase thrown around ‘ But ‘ it simply doesn’t get any better than that. A true legendary artist at the very peak of his talents. Amazing performance. Michio Kaku and fellow ‘string theorists ‘ would be very proud.
When you look at the concert history of Wembley Stadium at this time, it was remarkable that all bands you could see for $10. This was the same year as Live Aid, Queen the following year, Rolling Stones just before this concert, an endless number of great concerts. We Gen X teens had it made! When you see us as old folks in our chairs rocking our heads and smiling, we’ll be remembering the great bands we saw!
This show (Alchemy tour) was at the legendary hammersmith odeon.
@@TheCornishCockney Nah, this isn't from the Alchemy tour but the Brothers in Arms tour a couple of years later (Jack Sonni replacing Hal Lindes on rhythm guitar). It's not Wembley Stadium either but Wembley Arena where the band played 13 nights in a row. It was during this that Live Aid took place at the stadium. Dire Straits literally decamped across the car park to perform their set at the stadium and then went back again to play their concert that evening.
Your Latest Trick opens with an amazing saxophone solo. Another excellent song is "Why Worry". Thank you guys
I bet ya also like “You and your friend” !
Wow, I was just looking up the name of “Why Worry” since I haven’t listened to it for years. It’s sweet one and maybe the first DS song I connected with. I had arrived a day before a Grateful Dead concert at Stanford U campus and was walking near the stadium when that song came booming out on the bands’ sound system as they were setting up. It sounded almost like the band was in there playing live.
This band! Lucky to have seen them live where Mark’s guitar gave me braingasms for two hours!
Fab reaction. Mark is one of the greatest ever guitar players, no question. And the band - man were they tight - fantastic performance from everyone
Great version of this song. Mark creates very emotive sounds on the guitar.
Saw them perform in Toronto in 1985. They did this song. I remember the show like it was yesterday. They're awesome!! Great pick Bros...
Goosebumps!!
❤️❤️❤️
"Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits: The perfect song...
He's freakin amazing. I was a fan from the beginning and always will be. As usual, your reaction is what we felt for the first time listening too.
In the studio version, a rolling piano in the background is magnificent. But this live performance is fabulous!
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits live on this tour - they were absolutely magical.
One of my favorite songs from all artists! Thank you guys...
I was born in 1960 so was in my 20s when they were at their peak. I loved them back than and I now appreciate how very very lucky I am that I lived through this time.
62 now first heard them at 17yrs wow time flys still love the sound it will be eternal as a Aussie lucky to see em live in 1985/86 memory fuzzy Darwin NT
This by far my personal favourite LIVE version of this song mainly for the break and harmonies at 9:14 , the band were tight as normal and Terry Williams really nailed the drums this night. P>S Just listen to Allen Clarke following Mark on the keyboards all the way. Also notice no mobile phones in the crowd....good times.
He did't nailed them. He upgrated them like the other guys
Todas las noches me pongo a escuchar ese recital mientras hago mis trabajos y mis reacciones son las mismas. Es una obra musical impresionante!!!
I saw them in Paris 1983, amazing concert!
My very favorite band EVER - Knopfler is a master/genius- great, great, great- the band is exceptional- Guy Fletcher- what a wonderful keyboardist- and he and Mark are so in tone with each other- as is the rest of the band. The VERY BEST
A perfect Sunday afternoon jam .. luv this & esp the way they end this one!! Gave me chills for some reason. Mark's smile melts my heart .. that is when u can catch his smile. His modest personality, playing style & coolness just makes him that much more appealing. He seems like a genuine man. Thnx guys .. great job. B safe & well .. peace out🤘🏼✌🏼💓
I downloaded this gorgeous song a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Mark Knopfler wrote it about a fairground called Spanish City at Whitley Bay near his hometown of Newcastle in the north of England and I think it's really good. He spent a lot of time there when young and he obviously loved it! It's a really fabulous song - Mark is such a great songwriter as we know. This live version is amazing and I want to watch it a few times, it's so good! Many thanks for great reaction, guys, as always. Cheers.
The lyrics "Girl it looks so pretty to me, just like it always did. Like the Spanish City to me, when we were kids.' are now embedded in the mosaic tiling outside the entrance to the newly regenerated Spanish City site. What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful song and an incredible musician!
@@jjc5407 I know, it's fabulous and it's great they've revamped Spanish City site.
Watch this vid where Mark is interviewed by Brian Johnson (AC/DC) at that very place (Spanish City) - which was being refurbished at the time. Johnson shows Mark a line from the song that was incorporated in the stonework.

@@tonybanton6787 I've watched it quite a few times, Tony, it's just so good watching two old friends talking about their lives and influences. It was brilliant when Brian showed Mark the line from the song etched into the stone. Mark said he had no idea and he was gobsmacked.
Over the years I've listened to so many great guitar players, but always come back to Mark, a true virtuoso, a big shout out to the drummer.
It sounds like North East England ❤
What great memories ❤
Thank you dire straights ❤
Brilliant song drummer is just amazing. Glad you guys are enjoying the pure talent of this band. Live music played with amazing skill 👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏😎😎
Saw Dire Straits 4 times in the 1980's. Knopfler's solos' are legendary. What .A .Band x
This song and performance is amazing but that outro solo is an absolute masterclass in playing and building a solo, the breakdown in the middle is so beautiful with just Mark playing gorgeous guitar.
I’m 76 now and danced my little heart out during those years of this phenomenal band, still do it now when I listen to them. Thank you guys for your appreciation of this incredible talent ❤
If tone is everything to a guitar player, Mark is one of the best.
Great video guys. I'm old and saw DS at Wembley, 3 times during their 14 night stay in 85. Having seen then in '81 and '83, and again in '88, 91 and 92 I can say that the sound production and Mark's ad libbing and band chemistry was hands down the best in 85. From the first note of Ride Across the River to the last slam dunk of Going Home it was just an incredible show. It's hard to know why Mark has such a strong fan base. There are so many people who hear him once and that's it, you're hooked. My own theory is that he has a unique genius being such a strong guitar player and an equally gifted song writer. That's quite rare. You often get gifted pianists, or great rhythm guitarist who write songs and the genius lead player fits into the band. Mark is so talented he's a genius at both guitar and song craft. The metaphores if life and his experiences in Tunnel of Love, the dynamics, the mix of ballad and rock and roll, and the outro solo, which is simply the definition of how to construct a rock outro solo make it the complete MK experience. I only listen to various versions about 100 times a week now, but enjoy each one
You made my Sunday so much better with your reaction to one of Dire Straits' finest songs!! Listening to Mark playing is always a pleasure
Magic 🌟
love your reactions imagine what it was like growing with this music like my generation we took it for granted at the time but realize now how privileged we were
Simply put “Pure Magic”
Anybody who loves this song should spend a few minutes and check out the video of ACDC's Brian Johnson meeting with Mark Knopfler (on Brian's YT channel).
For so many years I had no idea that "the Spanish city" was anything other than a, well... Spanish city 😀
Cant believe that this new generation of musicians have never heard of THE best guitarist in the forever 70s&80s rock❤❤❤
Love the reaction guys. This performance transports you to another world. So good.
I saw this concert tour at his and my home town of Newcastle in 85 and it was the only concert I ever attended where people were begging for tickets and not trying to sell them . They were as good as you’ve just seen .🙌🙌🙌
With Dire Straits you get to hear pieces of heaven
Can't beat dire straits ❤
That is the music of my life, the most beautifull that ever have been done
This is my favorite Dire Straits song, especially when done live. It is shamefully underrated. Glad you guys did this as I have been asking reactors for the past 4 years to do this song live and you are the only ones to do it. This is a 16 minute song that is too short.
Best living guitarist ❤
Agree 100 %🔥🔥🔥
There are only 2 songs that give me goosebumps every time I hear them, and this is one of them. This solo at the end is epic and it leaves leaves me speechless and exhausted every time I hear it. It's a matter of opinion, but in mine, nobody can touch the way Knopfler plays - the combination of finger picking and soul the that exudes from the instrument is second to none.
FWIW the other is very very different (Holly Cole's version of I Can See Clearly Now). Give it a listen sometime....
If that solo doesn't reach you then you are dead inside nobody plays guitar like Knopfler!
