The simple truth is that there was never a live band like Dire Straits and never ever will. I cannot descibe what it was like hearing them live, twice, '85 and '92. Yes, I'm one of the lucky ones. ❤ Mark is "in my blood" too. Well said! Thanks guys, great reaction. 🙏🎶 Carin in Sweden
Lovely guys that you are..but....it's a Crime to Talk through one of the greatest songs ever written and performed as this is..ok I get it, I can go elsewhere......!!
Jesus, that was INTENSE, gets me every time. Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are probably two of the VERY BEST guitarists of modern times, if not THE best. But their styles are quite different I think. Mark's fingers dance ACROSS the strings, whereas David's dance ALONG the strings. Both BRILLIANT, and capable of stirring your innermost soul. Both Dire Steaits AND Pink Floyd are just beyond compare, both bands have BRILLIANT Drummers, Keyboard players, Bass players, AND guitarists.
I feel this is the best ever piece of piano playing in a rock band. He just ties every other instrument together like a family and it's also such an important instrument in this song, if it wasn't used in this song this song would never be this epic. I've always considered Mark's guitar playing as the best in the world but Alan on the piano is brilliant. He used to play with Eric Clapton and is the only player in Clapton's band to ever leave on his own accord and he moved to Dire Straits and that says it all. The Piano and Alan is as much of the star in this song as Mark and his guitar. I also love the bass and the rhythm guitars as well but really love just how delicate Terry is on the drums when he's just tinkling the cymbals gently and Alan is gently doing the same on the high notes on the piano, so much power and so much delicate playing is just bloody awesome. And at 56 years old I've loved this song for 40 years and my love for it gets better and stronger by the year. Sometimes when I'm listening thru headphones I just tear up with happiness due to such beautiful music. The main reason they're so bloody brilliant is because they're all happy smiling and jamming to something they love doing
I m exactly your age and i love them sane as you for sane period of time.I NEVER get tired of their pieces of arts and particularly of this song which i used to call it a symphony.Your comment truly inspires me.Thank you.
in the 80's I used to play guitar all the time 5 or 6 hours a day, my friend asked me if I wanted to go see Dire Straits... As you would expect I did, I think I have seen them at least twice live (in Australia). Pure, clean guitar, and the band is next level.
I truly believe that this song alone packs more emotions than all the FM music stations in America in a whole year in fact if I had to pick just one song as my all time favorite this would be it , despite I'm a big Pink Floyd fan!
I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! This performance is the perfect showcase for this masterpiece, and for their astounding collective musicianship! Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled poet/story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band. Nevertheless, he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, his unique sound, that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and nuanced transitions with and through his guitar... Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! Another very different but spectacular example of Mark's talent is also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West, also from 'Alchemy Live'.
It's awesome to see your reactions. You have got to understand that when this LP, Love over Gold came out, in 1982, it knocked everyone off their chairs! I was 16 and I will never forget sitting on the livingroom floor, reading the lyrics and listening, over and over again. Saw them live in '86 and '92 ❤ Do not forget Mark Knopfler being a masterful storyteller. He always means every word he is singing and in every song, there is a genuine story! I feel really lucky to have followed his music since -78. It's truly incredible. True love of music can never fade. Thank you Mark! No words are enough to describe decades of gratitude. ❤ 🎶🎸📚 Carin in Sweden
This song was inspired whilst Mark Knopfler was on a dIRE sTRAITS tour bus along Telegraph Road in the USA whilst also reading the book “Growth of the Soil” by Norwegian author Knut Hamsun when he wrote this song. Growth of the Soil is regarded as a historical classic. ... The novel exemplified Hamsun's aversion to modernity and inclination towards simplicity.
Dude, it's Mark Knopfler. His music is everywhere. He really studied the blues and country music. In fact, if you wanna know which guitarist most influenced him, it would have to be Chet Atkins, who taught him to make his guitar talk. Don't worry about broadcasting it, but you have to listen to their first three albums. The rest are amazing, but it will give you an idea of just how insanely mature Mark's compositions were from the very beginning. "Wild West End" from the first album is an absolute masterpiece. All of Communique will melt your brain. Then Making Movies, which features "Tunnel" and "Romeo and Juliette", which are iconic. Then move on to Brothers and Every Street and so on. You guys will be amazed. Just drop a tab, find a beach and make a day of it. You will come out younger and filled with hope!

To the guy on the right, your energy and excitement is wonderful and is so contagious!!!! As for Mark Knopfler and David Gilmore, they are apparently in studio together as we speak, working on a project. Can you imagine??! Fingers crossed it makes its way to the public. Mark is and always will be my favourite guitarist as he moves me emotionally more than anything I’ve come across in my 45+ years. He is pure genius.
Finally got around to watching this , brings back so many great memories . I saw this concert when they came to Vancouver , yes , I'm an old man . I saw the Brother's In Arms tour as well . Just a great band , so tight . Mark is their leader and it was an incredible show . As I've said before , I left that show with my ears ringing and I was a foot off the ground . It was so pure and I've been to many many concerts , Doobie Brother's , Elton John in '72 , Bruce Springsteen , Queen in '76 , Chicago in '77 and '79 and they were all great shows , but Dire Straits are the bomb , my favourite live band and my favourite band , enjoy the sound Mark creates , it's unique and in my opinion he is a guitar genius . Brothers in Arms is regarded by many l think as DS best album. However l think the Love Over Gold is their best work. This track, Private Investigations, the witty Industrial Disease, title track, are all superb. Every song on album is first class!
Thank you for a great reaction I love watching you both. I am a child of the 50's so I have had the privilege of seeing this incredible band several times at their very best. My boyfriend at the time and myself we came away from this concert on such a high we didn't come down for days. Fantastic wonderful does not begin to describe it, so talented all of them. I was a little in love with Mark and certainly John Illsley on bass....🥰🥰💗🎸🎸

An epic musical masterpiece. You will never see anything like this ever again, and am so glad you guys appreciated it, and enjoyed it, for the absolutely stunning performance. 👍👍
I'm late finding this reaction. I'm not joking, I was there! Thanks for reacting to this and bringing back memories of when I had hair!
That concert was amazing. Still have a lot of amazing songs from it to go... 'once upon a time in the west' (the concert opener) 'Private investigations' and tunnel of love to name but a few.
They will be playing these performances one hundred, two hundred years from now. If you die and reincarnate many decades from now, you'll still find this music!
They certainly have a style all of their own. Such a fantastic band. The first piece I ever heard from Dire Straights was in the 80s Sultans of Swing. Mark is such a great guitarist even now at 72.
Telegraph road contains all the DS masterpieces .. the final solo of Sultan of swing, the piano of Tunnel of love, the melody of Romeo and Juliet and the genius of Mark in Unce open a time in the West.
Hi guys. I was there at the concert that is in the video, so many years ago now but still so memorable. It is great watching it on RUclips and even better seeing your reaction

@@danieleciprari9041 Love the rockier songs on that album, Skateaway, Espresso Love, Solid Rock. I suppose there is always a song you don't like by any artist, Les Boys, I HATE IT!!! 😒
@@BertSmithLondon Sydney final concert 26th April 1986. Best version ever absolutely..
Tunnel of love is their best song. The studio version.
Great to see Alan Clark getting the props he deserves!!......longest standing member behind Knopfler and Illsley....and key to their sound
Big shout out to Guy Fletcher who arrived soon after and is still in Marks solo band to this very day. Can't wait for Marks next solo album due out in 2023 at 73 years old. God bless him 😊
@@MinistryOfDarkness11 Guy Fletcher,is absolutely brilliant.I saw the band twice,on their Love Over Gold tour,at Hammersmith Odeon, and Wembley Arena. Also saw Mark with the Notting Hillbillies,at the Leas Cliff Hall. Was standing about ten feet away from him, mesmerized by his playing.
Thank you Mark and the band! The drummer deserves a free beer, lol!
Mark is so good and has been for a loooong time..
I always say the same "Why does that guitar sound like that?", you can hear only two notes and you can say "that's Mark Knofler's guitar". Good reaction as always. :D
Dire Straits....one of those bands and singers you recognize from the first notes, from the sound of his voice. Distinctive instruments, distinctive sound to his voice. They are awesome!! Thanks Dudes! ❤️
I went twice to Alchemy in the UK. I feel privileged. Absolutely amazing performances. 🎸
We were spoiled with great music then, a fantastic period for us.❤️❤️❤️
Dire straits were fantastic, I had grown up listening to them now my kids listen to them and love them Brilliant.👍
hey guys, these guys are all now in their late 60s! MK is now 72. And still the best. this was my generations music and on til this time and so happy you are finding these concerts
So nice to see you guys react just like I do. It brings me to tears often.
To the guy on the right, your energy and excitement is wonderful and is so contagious!!!! It’s a breath of fresh air watching people’s reactions to this epic performance and you made my day with your transparency. “I would sell my soul”.. Love it!!!
Chris
Wow Guys, I can't believe this, Iv'e asked so many reactors to react to this and finally someone namely you have reacted to this masterpiece. Thanks so much, you guys are doing a great job,you have reacted to a lot of songs that I know others havn;t and that makes you guys special, keep it up.
Now that you mention it, I have not seen any other reactions to it. They don’t know what they are missing.
I have too, first reaction to this song! :)
I said the same thing right above your post I also suggested this one for them. Enjoying the "Dudes" :-)
@Penderyn Lewsyn Yes, they did and were very impressed.
same here.... i keep asking.... but no one listens....
Brothers in Arms is regarded by many l think as DS best album. However l think the Love Over Gold is their best work. This track, Private Investigations, the witty Industrial Disease, title track, are all superb. Every song on album is first class!
Their first album was also fantastic, less commercial than the later ones but some wonderful songs.
@@danknighton3286 All their albums were good.
Yes - Private Investigations is a very haunting and special piece - These guys should react to it !!
And Private Dancer 😋
I agree, my fav all time album, love the mood with long prog songs, its a masterpiece.
My most favourite Dire Straits song.
My all time favorite band. I consider myself very fortunate I got to see them in concert twice. The outstanding piano player is Allen Clark.
They're gonna go insane...I'm preparing myself....Woooow!! You can take that to the bank!!!
That was a joy to watch this with you. You feel like I did over 40 years ago, watching it for the first time.
Dosent get any more epic than this !
A mastercalss in dynamics....that´s Dire Straits for you...every.freaking.time.
I personally think this is the best song ever written, no other song can beat Telegraph Road. I was able to see the masterpiece Telegraph Road in person in the De Kuip football stadium in Rotterdam. Thanks for your nice comments gentlemen!
I"m wondering how on earth one can smash a thumb down button after hearing one of the world"s best rock ballads
Jealousy
thumb slipped!
Every member of this band are truly rare individual talents, who are able to blend together to make great music.
An epic musical masterpiece.
You will never see anything like this ever again, and am so glad you guys appreciated it, and enjoyed it, for the absolutely stunning performance. 👍👍
I'm late finding this reaction. I'm not joking, I was there! (I'm a blob in the crowd on the inside of the album cover)
I was 18 years old and I went down there on the train with some fellow apprentices from work.
When they played this live, we couldn't believe it, it was better than the studio version.
It was an amazing concert, Telegraph road was the highlight.
Amazing!
Thanks for reacting to this and bringing back memories of when I had hair!
Goddamnit I love your twos passion for the phenomenon that is Dire Straits
That concert was amazing. Still have a lot of amazing songs from it to go... 'once upon a time in the west' (the concert opener) 'Private investigations' and tunnel of love to name but a few.
They will be playing these performances one hundred, two hundred years from now. If you die and reincarnate many decades from now, you'll still find this music!
They certainly have a style all of their own. Such a fantastic band. The first piece I ever heard from Dire Straights was in the 80s Sultans of Swing. Mark is such a great guitarist even now at 72.
This has to up their with the greatest piece of work ever done never gets old love it
Dire Straits truly were a phenomenal band.
Telegraph road contains all the DS masterpieces .. the final solo of Sultan of swing, the piano of Tunnel of love, the melody of Romeo and Juliet and the genius of Mark in Unce open a time in the West.
my favourite music and my favourite live album
Agree 100% Best song and album🎸🔥🤩
Hi guys. I was there at the concert that is in the video, so many years ago now but still so memorable. It is great watching it on RUclips and even better seeing your reaction
Oh yes, Mark is such a genius!!!! Nobody comes close to this!!! love love love this band!!!!!Please react to Skate Away!!!!!
tal vez los halla mejores tecnicamente, pero con este buen gusto y sentimiento, difícil. Grande Mark!!!!Aparte compositivamente es un genio.
The song What It Is off of his second solo album is a great song too.
If I was on my deathbed with one wish only that would be to go out listening to this version. I'd go a happy man.
So glad to see guys who appreciate the greatness of that era.
These Alchemy Live tracks have always been among my favourites over many years, but seeing and hearing your reaction even now gives me new appreciation. THANK YOU!!
One of my all time favorites Mark Knopfler. In Dire Staits, solo, whatever. He has his own station on my Pandora.
Thank you, guys. Great reaction to one of the best bands of all time! Period.
‘Once upon a time in the west’ is a song that is not reacted to a lot, but deserves more praise and popularity. Amazing guitar play, and is also played at alchemy live. Best relaxing rock song to chill out to
Agreed 👍
The fact he played it on his 2019 Tour for the first time since 1983 was mega emotional for me as I assumed I’d never see it live.
The bass line on the Alchemy version is something else. Ilsley nails it.
@@tomarse99 yeah he's phenomenal. A masterclass on bass.
I like both the alchemy version and the more “reggae” studio version
