0:40 I see that you reacted to the album version of Tunnel of Love already, but the live version is magical (Wembley 85), Mark exhibits that vulnerability, and it oozes from his guitar in the final solo. The song is more autobiographical, thus personal. Would love to see you react to this. Thanks again. 🤟😃
A couple of other things to say: Mark's Father came to some of the shows and maybe he caught a glimpse of his Dad in the audience? Secondly, the whole song in some ways resonates with the fact that during the late 70s Margaret Thatcher's UK government oversaw a great deal of industrial decline in the North East of England where Mark grew up, with many key industries closing down, leaving those areas with high unemployment, rising crime rates etc. The story of industrial rise and decline, although not initially written about England, certainly resonates poignantly with the challenges that Marks part of the UK had in the 70s and 80s

What’s great about the Alchemy concert is that everyone in the band has their moments to shine. Keys/piano is such an integral part of Telegraph Road, whether studio or live, and Alan Clark is masterful here. As for MK, well he stands out in any performance, even ones where he’s in the background. Telegraph Road is a masterpiece in songwriting, it evokes so much emotion.
It's sad how Alan's abilities didn't get used on studio albums after _Love Over Gold._ Knopfler ended his Springsteen phase by the mid-80s, so Clark's talent was relegated to live shows.
I love Telegraph Road, but the one thing that I still find annoying, is how loud the crowd was, to the point of being disrespectful. During those quiet moments, where every single note should be alighting on your soul, some yahoo is whistling and hooting. They can't hear the music themselves, and they're ruining it for their neighbors. Can you imagine someone doing that during a symphony? There is a time to let the band know you love them, and a time to keep one's mouth shut. Such great lyrics, great story, to Telegraph Road, but this is one time I wish the sound engineers could have cut out the crowd noise. Sorry for the rant. I've been wanting to get that off my chest for a long time. 🕊

Oh, there's no question, a band always enjoys crowd feedback, they feed on it. The band/crowd chemistry at Grateful Dead concerts was part of what made their concerts so magical. But there's a time to let the music alight in your soul, sink down deep, your ears take in sound and if your mouth is open it's just because you're standing there with your mouth hanging open and you just Listen. 😊 And this almost painfully sweet piana solo was one of those times. And during that quiet section, would You have liked it to have some guy start whistling or yelling right in your ear? I've had that at concerts and it's not pleasant. Let's face it, it's rude. And a man's whistle can be loud enough to just about to pierce your brain. Well that's not true, some women can whistle at head splitting levels also. As I said, there's a time and a place. I've been to plenty of symphony performances where you can hear a pin drop, when they are done, the audience brings the roof down.
I've done plenty of showing my "enthusiasm " at concerts too. When it's appropriate. Just my humble opinion.

I grew up outside Detroit in the late 70s and early 80s, and this song describes its history so well. From building nothing into widespread economic prosperity, and then free falling into depression, desperation and unemployment. But even then there is hope. MK is an incredible story teller, composer and musician, and his ability to combine those traits into one package the way he does is truly incredible.
You can also see that so many of us have our own Telegraph Road stories from all over the world. You had front row seats to this masterpiece in real time. Much respect to Detroit (with all its charms and flaws) - Thanks for representing.

I’ve been listening to this album since I bought it in the early 80s and I never get bored of it. Telegraph Road has always been my lifelong favourite track and feels like the soundtrack to my life now. I was fortunate to see them in Paris in ‘85 when I was just 16 for their Brothers In Arms tour. Thank you for your appreciation.

I’ve watched a ton of reactions to this particular Alchemy version of the song and yours is currently my favourite. This is due to the fact that you’re a musician, a fellow Canadian, and most of all because of your raw, emotional reaction to the performance and to the song’s story. It’s so refreshing to see people become vulnerable enough to share their feelings and like you did as I had tears throughout the video as well. This is hands down my favourite Dire Straits live performance and is perhaps the best I’ve ever seen in my many years of experiencing live music.
Because of your approach and the fact that you have a graded list (which I wholeheartedly agree with), I subscribed to your channel and will continue to support you as your move forward.
Ps. I have an unapologetic man crush on Mark Knopfler as well for the same reasons. I’m also drawn to drummers and Terry Williams slid into my top 5 list of favourites (with Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band in the top spot). Mark Knopfler is hands down my favourite guitarist with David Gilmour following closely behind.

I just wonder if you guys can imagine what it was like coming home with this record in a bag, Love over Gold' in '82, I was 16 that year. I went straight to my room and put it on. The music hitting you... i have no words to describe it. I was totally blown away, although I had Making Movies and DS first album too. This was mindblowing, especially Telegraph Road and still is, 40 years later, unbeatably the best ever ❤. Yes, I heard it LIVE in '85! Thank god for Mark Knopfler, as a musician and songwriter and storyteller! Remember he was an English teacher before he went for a full music career.🙏✍️📚🎸🌏🎶

Absolute gem of a song, I adore this performance, as I do the whole concert.
What interests me about Telegraph Road is that it was developed by the band during sound checks whilst touring for the Making Movies album. There are DS concert bootlegs from 1981 on RUclips which show they actually had it in their set list, in a similar spot, before it was recorded on the Love Over Gold album the following year. Says much about the bravery, and confidence of Mark and the band that not only did they play an unreleased song as an encore, but an epic song like this one. Now it was definitely an early draft and probably in need of some refinement, but the quality was there, not to mention Pick Withers was superb on the drums.

There are 3 live performances in rock history that are absolutely epic: this one; Phil Collins, The First Farewell Tour, 2004 (Paris), and Journey, the Escape Tour, 1981 in Houston. (Queen at Live Aid gets an honorable mention: great performance, very stirring, but for the absolute peak of musical genius, falls a wee bit short.) They will never be surpassed.

The back story as I have it- The story was based on a novel by Knut Hamsun, and follows a man who decides to settle in the wilderness, wants to live a simple life, but everyone arrives and stays, and the road gets wider, and longer. The traveller hates this, as he just wants to live a simple life…. The road in question is Telegraph Road, (US 24) a stretch of pavement spanning almost 80 miles from Toledo, Ohio, to Detroit, Michigan. It was little more than a modest dirt path since it was beaten in the mid-19th century, growing and widening as it became the backbone for infrastructure such as telegraph poles and roadways as the decades rolled onward. In the 1910s, it exploded in usage with the booming auto industry in Detroit, and towns grew off of it as people sought to capitalize on this influx of wealth into the region. But at this point, the story grows achingly familiar. The communities dependent on the road still bear the deep scars of the exodus of the automobile industry. The road
has become the scar of progress that the community now bears. Its history is a drama played over a century.
I ended up reading the book after publishing this video...

I bought this album on release in 1984 and it's as fresh today as it was then. I feel privileged to have grown up in an era when there were bands like DS and Queen etc who were writing compositions rather than just songs.

I remember going to sleep with a girl i met whilst travelling in S.E. I was in my teens in the 80s and although I liked Dire Straits at the time their music was probably a bit too grown up for me then. What a pleasure it has been to rediscover them recently and appreciate their extraordinary talent.

I've loved Dire Straits since I first started listening to them in the late 80s. This version is probably my favorite DS performance/song (I'm also very weak for Tunnel Of Love - the live version from Wembley 85) Fantastic review and I particularly like how you explained the background for the lyrics. Being Norwegian I've not read the Knut Hamsun book, which I probably should... Your pronunciation was perfect (supposed to pronounce the K-N sound like you did, unlike for instance Knife where the K is skipped)

I think Telegraph Road is the best song ever written. The Alchemy live version is the best version of Telegraph Road. Guitarist Mark Knopfler and drummer Terry Williams are great, but I think the pianoplayer Alan Clark is one of the best in the world.

I had the Alchemy cd as a teenager in the 90's and just recently got a nice copy on vinyl , probably one of the best live performance ever recorded IMO

Ive been studying film and broadcasting at college, in ayr, scotland, recently and im the oldest in my class by far (im 52 and most of my class is in their late teens to mid twenties. One of the ways we've connected is through love of bands..partic the ones i grew up with (dire straits, genesis, ac/dc, iron maiden, pink floyd etc) and im constantly asked to recount tales of gigs ive been to and what it was like living through an era when the songs we know now as classics, were fresh and new. Great music does indeed span generations!
Have the book myself, havent finished it yet . But i have a favourite road nearby ive seen over my 57 years called Telegraph rd and ive watched it grow from a dirt track in to a major road over the years. I have loved this song since it first came out and over 40 years later its still my number one and this version never fails to bring tears of joy to my eyes as its so beautiful.

Lyrically this is the most poetic of all Dire Straits' tracks. Brothers in Arms is close, but the poetry together with the passion of its delivery makes this stand out. Other great guitarists were as technically able as Knopfler. They could play music and accompany songs, but for me no one can make the instrument cry, sing and move like him.
I agree with everything you said. Yes, the Jimmy Page’s and SRV’s of the world are at the top, but methinks MK and David Gilmour are of a different ilk and just mesmerizing in their unique way.

I think this song and the Alchemy concert in general is a great example of a band being "tight," i.e. in sync, sublimely together. Can you comment on this thought? Is band tightness something you can feel when it's happening?
Yes, just like a team sport, when relaxation sets in, it’s like a ‘group telepathy’. It’s an addictive feeling. It’s really tough to reach those levels, completely. It’s like a strong mind-altering drug. PF just had the ‘correct’ people together. What doesn’t get seen is the endless practice and frustrations that are essential in getting ‘there’ - thanks for watching.

As I have come to expect an excellent reaction to my favorite (live) song from my favorite band. I mean, the studio version of this wasn't so great, was it? But here it is just something that nobody else can do better. The piano, drums, bass and Mark of course, have any band had so many great musicians? Hamsun is controversial but if he in some way inspired this I don't care:).

This is one of my 2 all time favourite tracks, alongside "Save Me" by Avenged Sevenfold, very different to each other but equal masterpieces for me. Never too late to learn piano - I started learning drums last year as a hobby to take me into retirement....
Avenged Sevenfold, will look them up. Agree with your sentiment. I've just spent 7-8 years learning guitar and bass. Piano would be a great addition, because of the flexibility of pretty much playing anywhere, anytime. Good luck with your drumming journey. My singular tip, is try and relax and not overthink:)

This is the second time have visited your channel, first time was sultans of swing. I will now subscribe, I have seen this live version so many times and always enjoy it. But your reaction was outstanding. By the way a freind of mine saw them in the early days in my city wolverhampton uk, there was only four people there. John fleshy( bass) mentions it in his autobiography. And to make things worse the cheque ( bounced) was not honoured. They didn't get paid for the gig. Oved the reaction. Maybe try ' in the gallery' I think it was on the comunique album. Not so rocky but a good serious song. Thanks again

It is very hard not to like dire straits no matter what music you listen to. I really believe that they were one of those complete bands, like Rush. It needs nothing less and nothing more. The drumming in this: perfect for the song. Contained, yet very much part of the song.
Absolutely, Dire Straits has a universal appeal that transcends genres. They're one of those rare bands, like Rush, (a favorite of mine), that just seem to have it all-great musicianship, timeless songs, and a unique sound that's instantly recognizable.

I always wondered if Mark was also influenced by the TV miniseries Centennial, based on the James A Michener novel. It was shown on the BBC a year or two (from memory) before Mark wrote the song, and also concerned the founding and growth of a town from a 'home in the wilderness'.

What happened on the 70's -> 80's that were so many GREAT bands and songs like this?
If I were to hazard a guess, it was a decade or 2 after the great bands revolutionized music, and it was before everything was soulless/computerized. Great musicians were one-upping each other every 5 years or so.. which also gave birth to early prog rock. Just my humble guess. Thanks for watching.
