Ladies and gentlemen.... The one and only DS. Headed by the virtuoso Mark Knopfler. Just an outstanding, top tier group of musicians. His solo work is incredible too. There's a reason why Knopfler is a living legend and goes down in history as a one of a kind. Writes it all, sings it, performance is on another level. He has a genius mind and it can't be understated. Top reaction. Thanks guys.
Mark is my favorite guitarist. Thank you God!
I was 18 and at Hammersmith when this was filmed, July 1983
Telegraph was the encore
Its such an awesome piece, that we didn't think they could play it live, but they all smashed it!
Its still one of the best gigs I've been to, thanks for reacting to it
So, you're 1965. Like me. That year I have seen them live for the first time in Zagreb, then Yugoslavia, today's Croatia. I've been Dire Straits fan since 1980 when I heard Sultans of Swing for the first time on the radio. I didn't know the title, what the band was, it took me a few months to figure that out. I was hooked. I still am! Cheers!
IMHO he is in my top two favorite guitarists. Many disagree but I honestly don't think they understand the complexity of his style. He plays unlike any other! Also, when he uses his vocals followed by guitar, the call and response aspect is impeccable!
Best living guitarist ❤
Prince was once asked, what does it feel like to be the greatest of all time, his response, you better ask Mark Knopfler !
Prince was a prince. He was a big ZZ Top fan too.
F*cking Brilliant. One of the most overlooked tunes. Just Wow!
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Best living guitarist!!!
And the crazy thing is, this was the ENCORE to the show!
No, the encore to the show was Going Home from Local hero
This is possibly my favourite live performance ever, truly a masterpiece performed by the best. I only saw them once 90-91 in every street tour Wembley london, I was 18 it’s still the best gig I’ve ever been to.
I was 18 when I saw them!
It was this gig, you realise now, how lucky we were
Mark knopler is the Greatest finger pickers to ever live hands down
He's very good. I love his style. If you like finger-pickers hope you're familiar with Jeff Beck , Richard Thompson, and the great Lenny Breau.
Tommy Emmanuel enters the room...
No, but he's a good one. Listen to more music. I'll give you a name to start with, Roy Clark. There are others
Try Chris Rea , same picking style using open tuning .
You'll never hear anything like this again, MAGNIFICENT is the word.
A one off MASTERPIECE, and it never gets boring.
Some reactors who've never heard it before, you can see boredom towards the end of the tale, and they're thinking, good grief all the requests for this, the requestors must be a little off the mark.
Then the bass and the remainder, then they can see why, and its lovely to watch
Well done ❤
I was at this concert Hammersmith Oden London 1983 as a 29 year old. I’m now 68.
It was a great venue and old cinema fantastic acoustics but also quite a small venue.
This is a performance of musicianship of the highest order. This concert will always be in my top three of all time along with Queen Wembley 1986 and Bruce Hornsby and the Range also at Hammersmith Oden 1986
Knopfler has a three-finger picking technique that he taught himself. Once you know his sound, it is very distinct. The first time I heard Clapton and friends, I didn't even know Mark was on the album, but could tell before he played 5 seconds. For subtle, beautiful rock guitar, he is simply the best ever.
His picking style ( claw ) is not unique , Chris Rea plays exactly the same style , but he's a slideman .
@@SISU889 I knew Knopfler wasn't the only one using the claw; Jerry Reed picked it up from bluegrass and western players in the 50's, but Knopfler's application of it is unique and beautiful.
NOBODY's guitar work sounds like Mark Knopfler !!
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are unique gifts to humanity and lovers of music in general and guitar in particular.
Chris Rea plays exactly the same picking style as MK , except he's a slide player using open tuning . Both very expressive players . Masters of their craft !
This is their best song. (IMHO). Although there were many great songs, this fills me with the most emotion. The lyrics are so true. Things start off good and perfect. Then humans spoil it all.
Unique guitarist....fabulous band....amazing drummer!!!!!
Dont forget the piano!
The Guitar in the opening is a National Dobro Resonator.
such a masterpiece easily the best song ever performed in my opinion.
Agree 100%
Best song ever made, nothing compares to this 🎸🔥🎸🔥
The thing people don't know about Mark Knopfler is that he used to be a journalist working for an English tabloid newspaper. Who, when his boss came in asking him in a derogatory way to go write a story about this guitarist that died in Amsterdam (Jimi Hendrix of course,) literally told his boss the bad ass word "you can take this job and shove it." That day he decided to go pro in music. So he basically 'is' a writer, which is why you should always listen to the lyrics just as much as his guitar.
That newspaper was The Yorkshire Post. The editor might have been a square, but the paper is not a tabloid.
@@AnneDowson-vp8lg We refer to all newspapers as tabloids here in Belgium.
I see Dire Straits (Alchemy), I click.
Thanks. 🤟🤩
Please try Tunnel of Love (Wembley '85). One of the best guitar solos ever. Subscribed.
Agree.
This is untouchable best live version of this song and like you say the guitar oh my word !
My favourite Tunnel of Love solo is from the Thank You Australasia concert from Sydney in about 1986.
It is even better with how it flows musically and the tone notes somehow are more tugging on the heartstrings.
ruclips.net/video/2YajGjFJ93Y/видео.html
Telegraph Road is not a song, it's a journey.
I was going to use the word Epic - but epic journey even better 😊
Alan Clark on keys and Tommy Mandel guest keys for these shows.
You got it right about the rimshot, timing is absolutely spot on, the drums hold it all together.
Terry Williams. The best drummer no one has heard of
I have been listenting to that for over 30 years guys xx It was my favourite tune in 1996 ..xxxx
Towards the end your heads stopped nodding to the music and you was watching in disbelief, you will never see another performance like this again, when Mark knopfler stops singing you know all hell is going to break loose on that guitar 😮
Outstanding.
Just beautiful 🔥 Brings back memories 😢 As a Queen fan I highly enjoy Dire Straits. Real music, with depth and such musicality. They were amazing live! Much love and bless to you!!
So true. For me, Dire Straits and Queen are some of the highest levels of art in music. A gift to mankind.
Have a listen to 'Private Investigations' from Dire Straits on the Alchemy video. Atmospheric !.
It's a roller coaster of emotions. A story told in music.
It's about a town dying.
The birth, growth, surge, and decline of Detroit, all from the perspective of the highway.
Mark Knopfler came up with the song while on a tour bus headed out of town, sitting in the front of the bus, he saw this river of traffic at a near standstill going the other way. "Six lanes of traffic, three lanes moving slow."
The Master himself. There will never ever be another one playing the gitar like Mark.
Best song ever made🎸🔥
The guitar you see at the beginning of the performance is a 1937 National 14-Fret Style “O”
The live performance I like to watch, the album version I like to listen to in a pitch black room (in fact that is true for pretty much all of the "Love Over Gold" album.
Hard to believe that there are people who never heard of Dire Straights. I guess we of that generation just think our music has followed us into the future.
Yes 2 keyboard players. One one left of screen with 5 keyboards one which is piano is Alan Clark, probably one of the best in the world for rock music. So he has 5 keyboards to work so the second keyboard player is Tommy Mandel and he plays three keyboards to help take the load when Alan has his hands full especially with the piano.
The second keyboardist on the right was Tommy Mandel. I think he had a very diverse job. He is not very well visible on the recording of the Alchemy concert, but in some shots he swings beautifully to the rhythm and claps his hands. Alan Clark on the left, permanent band member, piano/organ, I agree with you!
@@vladimirstoje8345 I bought the DVD of this and it's much clearer picture and I watch it everyday from start to end, can not beat the six guys in this concert. I'd say the pinnacle of music talent and a very rare bunch of guys. I've listened to them since they first started back in the seventies and still my number one band and song.
@@Orbitalmercury Similarly with me :-) Remastered disc from 2010. I love Telegraph Road very much. Behind the Iron Curtain until 1990, singers like Bob Dylan or Mark Knopfler were neither on radio nor television. On the radio, their melodies could sometimes be heard with Czech lyrics. For example, Walk of Life was sung by our singer Hanka Zagorova with different lyrics "Dobre rano" ("Good morning"). I could see DS on our TV first time in 1990. It was some beneficial concert with other singers, for example Annie Lennox sang there as well. I think DS played Walk of Life and Solid Rock there. I was very happy that we were also becoming a part of that world where such beautiful music is played 🙂
Best Heard in the dark, without visual distractions. The lyrics are just amazing.
Also from Alchemy Live very very good "Once upon a time in the West" you should react to this one!!
The soul in his playing is beyond anything I've ever heard anywhere else.
Hendrix does it too in a looser, lower-reolution way, but this is a big step up.
I guess it's really just a conjurer's trick, but it seems to come from another realm.
Hi love your channel and reactions. I think you'll really enjoy Private Investigations, Brothers In Arms and Calling Elvis from DIRE STRAITS - Live On The Night 1993 and Once Upon A Time In The West from Alchemy Live 1983. Cheers All the best from Australia 😊🎸🎸🎸
Thanks for watching and leaving this comment/ suggestions, we’ll definitely check them out.👍🏽cheers to you 😊
In Money for Nothing greatest hits album, there´s the same Telegraph Road from Alchemy, but with percussions overdub...
If you wrote a list of rules of things NOT to do to write a song... well, Telegraph Road breaks pretty much all of them. Utterly glorious. If you like this, try their Making Movies album from 1980 - Expresso Love, Skateaway, Romeo & Juliet, Solid Rock...
Brothers in Arms (Live Mandela), Once Upon a Time in the West (Alchemy Live) and Tunnel of Love (Wembley 85) are great as well
Okay, sounds interesting. We’ll check them out.👍🏽
Yeaah man, you chose the best😎
Personally think once upon a time in the west is one of their weaker songs, but agree with the other two
@@martinarscott3524 Have you heard the Live Alchemy version of Once Upon a Time in the West?
@@peter9910 yes I have the album
slow and fast like the road life my friend, many time quiet, much time confusion. Many things we can take of this song.
This group is orchestrated and thier timing is and individional sound has never been equaled, they are all great musicians, my favourites, thanks for your reaction, I love the man's too big
An absolutely fabulous song, Mark Knopfler is incredible and along with Alex Lifeson of Rush one of my favourite guitarists of all time.
You should check out Tunnel of Love alchemy live..this song has the best instrumental outro of any song ever in my opinion…absolute genius!

The ultimate Tunnel of Love for me is the above link )
I still know almost every single word by heart, over 40 years after i first heard this epic
Nice reaction👍
The studio album will give you a chance to hear the lyrics more clearly. Worth it. A great song.
First reaction I've seen by you guys. I'd not seen anybody else react to this old favorite song I've enjoyed for so many years. I'd never seen this live performance but now that I have I love it. Good job and thank you for introducing me to this live version.
You know "Telegraph Road" well but you never knew of the _Alchemy Live_ album and video--?
Love Mark and his 1937 National model O guitar in the opening
Absolute masterclass.
Seen them a t Wembley stadium in 87.i was only 16 and caught the bus from Glasgow
Perfect version of a perfect song
I do believe MK was born in Glasgow, Scotland, then, as a young child, moved to Newcastle, England. He trained to be and worked as a journalist in Leeds, England, before turning his hand to music. I reckon he currently lives in the Chelsea area of London. And may have retired from the music business. Well done to him.
Knopfler was born in Glasgow
In addition to the incredible instrument playing, a close listen to the lyrics is worth while. It tells a tale of the rise and fall of Detroit. The coordination between the music tempo and mood, and the lyrics is exceptional.
How beautiful is Ebony!!?
The shiny metal acoustic guitar is called a National Style "O" resonator guitar.
the FIRST album to go BIG on CD was Brothers in Arms. in many ways music been on a downward spiral since !
In my opinion Alchemy is the best of DS. 👏👏👏
You said that Mark is ‘playing really funny on the guitar’, and you wondered what kind of technique it is. Mark Knopfler plays 100% fingerstyle- he doesn’t use a pick. So what you saw was Mark using the backs of his fingernails to strike very loud, hard chords with the same sharp attack as one might get with a pick.
Mk and DS rock
Did they ever play this song in concert in Detroit?
It's a 6 string resonator, not a 12 string. Unique sound- listen to Romeo and Juliet.
05:24 there´s another tour kb player... Tommy Mandel
mostly Alan Clark can be seen and heard. Tommy Mandel is a little visible 04:25 . A nice interview with Tommy Mandel is on the ruclips.net/video/7qUBilUcmi0/видео.html
Its a Dobro, all metal guitar. It gives that tinny tone
Dylan meets Springsteen meets free bird...keep flyin mr K
There is only one keyboard player, he is fantastic and self taught.
Two, Alan Clark, and guest for these shows Tommy Mandel. One either side of Terry Williams the drummer.
@@eturfrey correct. Sorry I"d forgotten that.👍
Two keyboard players. Alam Clark is classically trained. He went on to be Tina Turner's director of music.
@@thehighlander959 yes. My mistake.
This guitar is a dobro.
National Style 0.
I made it 1:52 into this "Reaction". The people that take an absolutely iconic rock song AND performance and decide to talk incessantly over it as it is playing....you think any of us are interested in hearing you mumble nonsense while it is playing? NO!!! Save your comments and review until the video is OVER!!! I will gladly listen to your thoughts. This was, through that 1:51 the most egregious of all reactions I have watched.
you SA?
You know, silence is an absolute crucial part of expressive music and yet you felt it necessary to interrupt an expressive piano solo with how good the guitar solo was. What? Some reactions teams, I feel I can introduce to a Classical style, but some don’t really enjoy emotional style and don’t really appreciate that. If you are really open to a more emotional rabbit-hole then hit me up for some recommendations. If it’s not your thing, it’s fine, but I would expect a musically open reactor to mention the character of the piano solo. Willing to take you down the classical rabbit-hole, but also the ELO hole, which many have succumbed to.
Get with the uptodate stuff guys lol xxx
Up-to-date stuff sounds like granny music.
