I’ve watched so many young people discover Pink Floyd, band of my youth. You two young men really get it at a deep level. I’m 65, and you and I could sit for hours and talk about my generations rock music and I could tell you so many stories of what I was doing in the 60s and 70s with Pink Floyd as my favorite band playing in the background, what their music meant to me as an 18 yr old coming of age back then. I love seeing you two because you truly appreciate the musicianship, so lacking in much of today’s music.

The 60s and 70s were an intense time to be young with British music rocking us here in the US providing us with a soundtrack that helped us connect with ourselves and the world. Seeing Pink Floyd live performing Dark Side Of The Moon in 72-73 was a big influence on who I became as an adult. The power of music!

"Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
    Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
    Shine on you crazy diamond"
Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd, and mentally speaking, reality, around 1968. But in a sense he never really left the band. He would become the muse behind so much of Floyd's music and tone through their most successful era, along with Roger's own dark reflections. This masterpiece isn't just about Syd, it's about the darkness.... Universal and always just around the bend for all of us to steer ourselves away from the best we can.
"And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"

I just sit here with my beer and my pipe and watch your minds get blown the same way mine did decades ago, long before you were even a glint in your daddy's eyes.

Roger's lyrics are amazing. I think everyone knows someone they have conflicted feelings about. Syd's deterioration while part of the band at times alienated him from the others. "He wore out his welcome with random precision." is a complex turn of phrase. He drove them crazy, angered them, and they loved him. This song is a tribute to Syd and embodies all of those conflicting feelings. We've all been there.

Great reaction to that masterpiece. Some backgrounds: Pink Floyd had no ideas what they should go for after Dark Side. They experimented with household objects what survived as intro to Shine On. And as they had no ideas the thought about absence of ideas and absence of the creative force of Barrett. And - and that a miracle by itself. When they did the final mix for Shino On suddenly Barrett appeared at Abbey Road. But noone recognized him. After he was finally recognized they had some wired moments with him. Still thinking the Pink Floyd story deserves a high budget film one day.

When this album was released, a lot of people considered it a letdown from the amazing masterpiece of "Dark Side of the Moon". We all rushed to buy it, of course, but for many it just wasn't up to the same level as DSotM. What we all wanted, of course, was another album which would be the same as DSotM. I remember when "Animals" came out, and a lot of my friends felt that album was *significantly* better than WYWH. Not that anyone hated WYWH, but it seemed too slow and didn't have as much "bite" as DSotM or "Animals".
But as the years went by, WYWH seemed better-and-better, and has a timeless feel to it. "Animals" seemed a bit too angry, and was a tied a little too much to the specific years that it was released (especially for the song "Pigs, Three Different Ones"). While DSotM still seems like the masterpiece we all felt that it was when it was released, for many people (including me) WYWH now seems like the better album. Fast-forward to the 1990's, and all four members of the band were saying it was best album they had created.

I have played guitar for twenty five years. There have been moments in my practice where I can just glimpse the genious of DG for just a few seconds. It feels the same way. When playing with band mates and this happens and everyone looks at me, we are all shocked as I look at my fingers. I wish I had this everyday all the time like Gilmour. I have only touched that all might groove here and there and it is a drug, you literally take spiritual flight.

So, a personal story: I graduated high school back in the mid-1970's. After high school many of us left for different colleges in different parts of the USA. Five or ten years after that (and probably after the release of "The Wall"), I went to a party which was a reunion of maybe 30 high school friends. Many of us hadn't seen each other in years, so we're all chatting away to find out what everyone else had been up to. There was a radio station playing in the background, and it started playing the full 9-piece suite for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Slowly but surely, *everyone* in that crowd stopped talking. Everyone just sat or stood where they were, listening to the song. The song ended, and after a few seconds I said something like, "That song is much better than we realized at the time". Several people added short comments, like "Indeed" or "Amazing" - and then the entire crowd when back to talking the way we had been before the song started.

This song is dedicated to Syd Barrett who's eyes became like 'black holes in the sky' after taking too much LSD. Although the lead creative force behind pink Floyd in the early days he was finally replaced by David Gilmour who used to fill in for him on stage when Syd could no longer hack it. After many years of Syd's absence he mysteriously showed up at the studio during the recording of this song. The only thing I can suggest is to try to watch the Pulse video and the visuals that go with it. This song is the opening track.

Pink Floyd were an "experimental music group", in the sense that they experimented different sounds. They were different from all other rock groups of the time. They didn't have a belting voiced vocalist like the other groups (Led Zeppelin, the who, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Deep Purple, CCR) and that's why they lasted for a much longer time than all the other groups. David Gimour changed the path of PF from what it was when Syd Barrett was part of the band. David made Pink Floyd focus on the music & sound more than on the lyrics. he made every instrument that is played shine in its own way: the drums (echoes), the organ/synthesizer (comfortably numb), the bass (Shine On You, Another brick in the wall), the saxophone (Wish you were here), the back-up vocals (Great gig in the sky, Time, wish you were here). All that makes Pink Floyd stand out like the best group of that era. One last remark: None of the mentioned group could have made it if the Beatles didn't split up in 1970.

yes ! put on the greatest hits, close your eyes and let yourself sink inside.. there is not a single note to change, the sound is so pure and hipnotic... but one time you must see the video, and the video of another brick in the wall, are someting crazy... The crazy thing is that my mother as a girl saw the concert here in venice, that's why I thought of pink floyd as old stuff, then one day I heard them and my musical world changed

The incredible organ during the intro is the really first time when I was 10 that gave me intense waves of goosebumps, on my parent's sofa. I couldn't believe it, I was hypnotized! I remember when I was listening to this song, I was looking at the photo of the album, with the man on fire that frighted me but I was really fascinated at the same time; and I do remember perfectly the specific smell of the album too (that was also very important to me, like when I read a book, I need to smell the book). At this moment, I was literally in another dimension, the dimension of Pink Floyd. When I was nervous, I needed to close my bedroom, put my headphones on, take the album in my hand, smell the album, and when I heard the organ or the synthesizer ... that was it!! ... I was immediately calm, serin, focused, I was in peace, and in harmony with myself again -- Pink Floyd ... you are the soul of my childhood.❤️
