It's my religion! If only the U.S. government would recognize a U.K. band as being equivalent to a god. If any band were so worthy, this is them.
I've said that many times. Best method is a dark room, headphones or a stereo pushing about 1000 watts, cold Pepsi and if yer so inclined a couple fine joints or maybe some acid. Those last 2 are optional and a personal preference.

Gilmour's style, as well as many other guitarists from that era were influenced by the old 1920-30's Bluesmen of the South. In fact their named after two early Bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Otherwise you would know them as the "Tea Set."

Yeah, one of the things I love about Gilmour's playing is that he such a blues guy playing progressive/70s kinda music. And his tone/sound/feeling is totally out there. Gilmour's slow tasteful vibratos should be taught at any guitar lessons.
My favorite Pink Floyd story is: A record company told them they would never be anything until pig could fly. When they got their first gold album, they had giant balloons in the shape of pigs and flew them over London.
That was my first experience with Pink Floyd in Cincinnati!

When you listen to these songs for the first time, us that have loved them for years get a chance to vicariously experience them for the first time all over again. It's a weird spiritual gift. We've been given a second chance to fall in love.

Right? I enjoy all kinds of music and love to hear new things and give them a chance and seeing Jamel ride that same journey in front of us is really cool.
The members of Pink Floyd went trough some stuff and they captured those times through their music. As much as I feel Rogers Waters might have been a pain to work with, he had a vision of what the entire story an album should tell and that's what's sets Pink Floyd apart from many other bands.
I've watched a few videos of Roger Waters on RUclips and he seems to show some animosity over things that were done or said and who knows what happened to alienate him from the group. As technology advanced I think Pink Floyd could have done even more incredible things had they been able to stay together. Gilmour has smooth style of guitar and singing and Waters countered that with an edginess using his voice and song tempo.
Jamel can come over to my house anytime and listen to this music (I don't think we live that far apart actually). I think he would love to watch "The Wall" movie by Pink Floyd since he seemed to enjoy the artwork done in this video.

David Gilmour can put you under a spell with one note! My personal favorite guitarist of all time.
He bends those strings like no other.
I finally had the pleasure of seeing him live, in 2016 at The Hollywood Bowl. What a special night. When he tours again, I will be there, come hell or high water.

This song was dedicated and about original founding member Syd Barrett who sadly lost a battle to mental illness. He was incredibly creative

Most people that are musically literate believe that. The thing that sucks is there are entire genres of rock now that are Floyd influenced that don't get commercial airplay. Floyd was a chart band. Musicans have to take the charts back to get people playing again. Tool did it when they released their album and beat Taylor Swift. More need to follow.

I was probably 15 years old and I loved Pink Floyd for a while already but then when I heard this song it changed the way I listened to music for the rest of my life. I was almost scared like I was hearing something no one else was. I felt like I was floating and my skin tingled like my whole body was a funny bone. I still feel that way everytime I listen to it. I can't even drive and listen to this. It's a musical masterpiece like no other.
Never told this to anyone but the last time I did acid was the Halloween blizzard in 91. That was In Minnesota, I'm 66 now. I was standing on my front steps in north mpls with Pink Floyd on my stereo blasting while totally isolated and the snow untouched several feet deep. I'll never forget the feeling!❤
Ive said it before. To me, Pink Floyd is not a “rock and roll” band. They are a genre all to themselves. As a lifelong Floyd fan, it does my heart good to see you get this music. Such an amazing musical entity...

Sorry about chiming in here but you could say that about many bands from the 60s and 70s. But I agree, Pink Floyd led that movement. The whole genre could be broken up into hundreds of "sub genres". Bands like Blue Oyster Cult were several genres, depending on where they were in their progression.

The last time I heard this, I was playing it for my dying father in hospice. He didn't know who I was. Can't say I knew him much, either.
I'm doing Jamel's Pink Floyd Playlist and I had forgotten how incredible they are, I have tears on my face from these guys. David Gilmour and Rick Wright have such a way of playing that hit me right in the feels. It is definitely time for me to listen to them non stop. RIP Syd and Rick

Pink Floyd is raw emotion. Its impossible not to have an emotional reaction to their music. Pure artistic mastery.
The guitar is pure emotion in Gilmore s hands. It speaks to you.....inside.
There's no one better at conveying emotion on the guitar than David Gilmour in my opinion.
No other guitarist conveys such deep emotion. He is the GOAT in my view. No one else has ever managed to make me cry like that, or feel such deep joy, just from playing a guitar.

People were constantly spiking his food and drinks with acid and then locking him in closets when he freaked out. He was living one constant bad trip for years. That's enough to drive most people over the edge.

David Gilmour is an artist who paints his emotions on silence.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. It appeared on Pink Floyd's 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. The song is written about and dedicated to Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. The song was conceived and written as a tribute and remembrance to their former band member Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd. Barrett was ousted from the band by the other members in 1968 due to his drug use and troubled mental health, which had affected his ability to integrate with the rest of the band and perform and create as a musician. He was replaced by David Gilmour, Barrett's former school friend who had initially been brought in as second guitar. The remaining band members felt guilty for removing him, but they viewed it as necessary, admiring Barrett's creativity and being concerned about his severe mental decline. The work was first performed on their 1974 French tour and recorded for their 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is one of the alltime great psychedelic songs. Pink Floyd are masters of effects & atmospheric sounds. David Gilmour's guitar playing is so refined & delicate to start & just builds & builds. This masterpiece is so beautiful to hear.

Hey, this is only half of the song! The song is split into multiple parts, half of which are played at the beginning of the album, the second half played at the end. I highly HIGHLY recommend listening to the second half of the song (Parts VI - IX). In fact, I would actually recommend listening to the entire album of "Wish You Were Here" from start to finish. You will not be disappointed. It is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.
Pink Floyd is an "album band," in that their music is best enjoyed by listening to the album as a whole, cohesive unit. For example, Dark Side of the Moon really needs to be heard from start to finish. Some excellent tracks on it, but you really don't "experience" it until you listen to it from front to back. It can actually make you feel like you're high, this band was incredible.

Wish you were here IMHO is the perfect album. I want this song played at my funeral. Nick Mason the drummer for Pink Floyd says this is his favorite album and the only one he still listens to.
My dream is to time the entire album of 'Dark side of the moon' to a solar eclipse, so that it reaches totality just as the ending lyrics of eclipse crescendo.
I'm 60. A big Floyd fan, and I agree. "Wish You Were Here" is their masterpiece. I can just listen to it on repeat. Over and over. You really cant tell where is begins and ends after a while. And....I'm sober.

Close your eyes and you can actually "see" the music. A Musical masterpiece is a journey when done right... it's an experience, friend. It will open your mind.
Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time. This music brought me so much peace when life was so chaotic. I could often relax listening to it and go from listening to it into feeling it surround me like a blanket being wrapped around me.
Keep in mind, all of these songs come from concept albums that are all basically one long song broken into pieces. In other words the “songs” all bleed into each other.
Not all song, they fade out to switch record side. The wall have 3 silence between songs. (two records with two sides)

my dad introduced me to pink floyd as a child and was pretty much all i grew up on were pink floyd and the moody blues for years, sadly my dad passed away and today being his bday, 77. He may have passed on but floyd memories will never leave me, it was something great.

My uncle turned me on to this song in my formative years but my fondest memory is listening to it with my father. We were driving in the early morning from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in the desert watching the sunrise while the music was playing. We both acknowledged how powerful the music was at that moment. I miss my father so much and wish we could have one more road trip together.

All my kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids have heard this piece of music. They also agree that this will play on an endless loop in the background at my funeral...!!!

I remember finding the guitar tabulature for this when internet came along in mid 90s, and yet struggling to learn all of Gilmour's amazing stuff that is on display here. And that's just the guitar parts, everything in this song just show how ridiculously great this band were.
And then you realise that the lyrics is about a former member/founder that sadly lost his way at an young age. RIP Sid Barret.

I'm so happy you discovered Pink Floyd. I live in Beautiful British Columbia in Canada, home to some of the best scenery in the world. Every Summer, I go backpacking and just camp outdoors, take down some mushrooms, and listen to Pink Floyd. They are so spiritual and uplifting. I end up coming back to the city and my job level headed and relaxed. Definitely a great experience.

I saw this and several other concerts by Pink Floyd. They had the best laser light shows, props and visuals incorporated in their shows. This song started with the arena completely dark with the visual on a big drum screen on the stage. Suddenly the lights went on and there was the band. No evidence of the band was present on the stage prior to the lights going back up. This and many of their concerts had physical impact on the audience, spell bound with heart racing. I watched The Floyd do the entire Wish You Were Here album in the first half of their 1975 Wish You Were Here tour that began in Vancouver. The second half was the entire Dark Side of the Moon album. I have been a rabid fan ever since. It gives me a thrill to see your generation and even younger folks appreciating Pink Floyd’s iconic music too. These four dudes were visionaries for sure.

If you know the backstory of that song, it's even more powerful. Their former lead singer had to quit cos of mental problems and drugs. And this is the tribute to him. And when they recorded that song, he visited them in the studio but no one could recognize him cos he had no hair and was overweight. And some members cried. This song is about how someone can change slowly but surely and is like a different person. The old self vanished. The identity is destroyed

When I saw Pink Floyd in 1977 at the Milwaukee County Stadium, they first played the "Animals" album in its entirety (not in album order), took an intermission, then came back to play "Wish You Were Here" from start to finish, IN ORDER!! I was barely 18 and remember this like yesterday!! Fantastic!!

As a 69 year old white dude...it’s heart warming to see you appreciate this band. They were the essence of my life in the early 70s.

Seeing you react to music that I sort of took for granted as a young adult (we were used to nothing but the best!), gives me a whole renewed appreciation of what we knew all along!
