Where to start, I did lights for the sultans tour when David was in the band & everyone had small cardboard red & white fender badges with Dire Straits written over the top. Lovely people, pleasant to all.
The song was written about a gig in a near empty pub by a band called Sultans of Swing, the band name amused him with the contrast between the name & their style.
The night of this recording was the drummers birthday & his family were guests for the show.
Mark is a really nice person, if you can find his chat with Brian Johnson of ACDC it is quite illuminating as both are of a similar age & grew up in the same area of UK.

Lyrically Mark, beautiful outstanding musicians all jamming together with the lead guitar as the centrepiece. Mark is one of the best ever for me, the best I have seen live. And this was 41 years ago. Makes me feel old but it takes me right back to my youth, the 70's & 80's seeing them live. So, excited buying the first album & playing it over & over. There is nothing like music it should be a religion & forget all the others because with music there is love, peace & harmony. This was a religious experience with musicians all communication with one another. The drums with the lead guitar then Mark communicating with the keyboard player when the tempo became slower. Brilliant, superb, sublime.

Nevertheless, he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, his unique sound, and the fact that he is a finger-plucking genius, Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! I love "Sultans of Swing"; that said, if you want to really see the breathtaking live musicianship of this band and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" from this same Alchemy Live concert. Drummer Terry Williams is of fire!
His dad was in the audience and Mark told Terry to go for it and make dad proud.

The drummer is the hero of this version of the song. I prefer the singing and guitar on the studio version but what a ride to hear the fun they are having.

Don't get me wrong, he was good back then. That was was about 40 years ago. He's now a master guitarist. From the music from Princess Bride, to If This is Goodbye (a lovesong from the point of view of the passengers on the 9/11 Jets). He is a true master.

This is the latter. It's the stipped back, solo vocal, non-country version. I genuinely cry from the beauty of it.

If I'm not mistaken, the red guitar being played by Mark Knopfler in this video actually sold for over $500,000 at auction last week. The whole collection fetched over $11 million, 25% of which was donated to charity.

Mark makes his guitar talk, seems all so relaxed and easy but must have taken years of practicing. I can imagine Les Paul and Chet Atkins may have influenced him.

You're right about Chet Atkins. You don't have to search far on youtube to find them playing together and the respect they had for each other is clear to see.

And you're right about the years of practicing. The great blues/rock guitarists of that generation - e.g. Eric Clapton; Jeff Beck; Jimmy Page, and Mark of course - each spent hours, days, months, years (as teenagers) practicing. Bear in mind there was no Internet (so, no RUclips etc), and only basic terrestrial TV with virtually no music videos. You listened to records - often expensively imported from the USA - over and over and over again; trying to play what you were hearing.

I remember the first time I heard this,I was playing guitar in a showband in Ireland, the D.j. played this before we went on stage, the piano player tapped me (1979) wait till your hear this guy.I now teach this to teenagers who all love Mark Knopfler, the greatest!!

There is something special about Knopfler. When I watch him play, it's just natural. There is no translation of ideas to sounds. When I listen to this music I remember the times when I had a bike and spend all weekends on day long tours listening to it. When I was a kid, I didn't know that you have to learn playing an instrument, not really. After all, music is just there, on the radio, in the stereo. I had no idea that in a band these guys have to play together, listen to each other. They're just having fun there, aren't they? After trying to learn the guitar and finding that I have no talent for music, I started to appreciate how hard that actually is. But when I see Knopfler play, I am reminded on what I thought making music is like. It's a state, Knopfler is there and that means there is also music. He's not making an effort, look at him. That can't be hard. It's fun, look.Didldidldidl-ditdy! I just love it...

Mark has one of the most recognizable guitar tones out there. Yes, he doesn’t use pick. I notice that in this particular video he uses a technique called “Chicken picking “ to get that chucking sound on his guitar that you often hear from chicken.😊😊😊
