It's a close race though. They were on fire for this run of concerts. I saw them in '86 here in Melbourne and they smashed both songs. And all the others. He also sings as good as ever. Which is...terrible. But it's his voice. You sing them with a more trained sounding voice, and they don't work. Imagine Bob Dylan's voice sung beautifully and you have Peter Paul and Mary doing Mr.Tambourine Man. It's a different song. You also might get why Dylan got Knopfler to produce a lot of his albums back in the '80s

They did this at Live Aid, and were followed by Queen. I recorded it at the time and still have it on VHS somewhere. In the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody", before Queen goes on stage, and Freddy is addressing the other members of Queen in the backstage area, you can hear Dire Straits, apparently onstage, playing this, in the background. It blew my mind that they included this detail. I got up in the middle of the night to record the original as it went to air by satellite across the whole world (me in Melbourne Australia), and my parents thought I was mad. I recorded the Queen bits afterwards because I always like them, but my sister loved them. She liked Dire Straits too, and we were both there at that gig in 1986. It was her 20th Birthday, so I guess I was 17. They did a run of shows that was never beaten globally until 1988, when Pink Floyd beat it, same town, I and I was at the opener of that one as well. The record stood until P!nk beat it a few years back (same Town! We like who we like!) but I wasn't at that. Ex-wife was though.

Mark's chickin'-pickin' is peerless! I wonder if this young man realizes Mark is not using a pick - I love to see young peoples' reaction to musicians using real instruments, especially 70's rock-music. This song will melt your face off. Best riff EVER made, played, or produced. Their drummer is really going off the meter, as well. Mark Knopler: THE Maestro.

Have you noticed him finger picking, no plectrums are used by him.

Mark Knopfler was born in 1949. The Alchemy tour was in 1983, so he was 34, and Dire Straits was already 6 years old at that time.

Watch the movie Princess Bride. We wrote and played the score. The first time I watched it and heard the first note, I knew it was him. He can play any genre and excel. You will never watch the movie the same way again. Listen to "Boom, Like That" of "Song for Sonny Liston".

This live version is more up-tempo from the studio version that is relatively laid back. Mark Knopfler is one of the great composers and guitar players.
