He is truly amazing here ! he really complements the Amazing Legend Mark and the awesome Keyboard player i believe John Illsley who is incredible as well.
@@jimclarke1108 I met him once about 28 years ago performing alongside his brother Phil. I thought Phil was a tad better but not by much. I was helping set-up and also break down their gear for the concert that day and got free tickets to the show and met both afterwards.
Dire straights was cruising for me playing pool and chilling.. and then a breakup after many years..and their music was still somehow comforting ...from another old lady
I'm English and 66 years old so I heard this song when it first came out. It was the first Dire Straights Single and rocketed them to stardom overnight. That is why they are SO enthusiastic in their performance AND you can see they are enjoying themselves. Why is it great? Firstly, it tells a true story about what was my town, London. Second, they are all brilliant artists... ,yes that helps. Third they are what we used to call a "Tight" band that have played together so much that you can no longer tell who is controlling the speed/tempo. They speed up, sloçw down, nearly stop, drift.... they are literally playing with the audience, toying with the audience. As you noticed they have a real drummer, as we had back then. Why don't we get stuff like this anymore? Because with modern PoP music you set up a drum machine get either guitar or keyboards to play a matching tune, then a half naked girl to screeech some random words.
As good a performance as this was, Mark Knopfler's abilities to write, sing and perform have progressively improved over time. A musical genius in my book.
It's a finalist. Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana's Eyesight to the Blind/Why Does Love Have to be so Sad medley from Clapton's Crossroads 2 set and the entire Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's video would be up there too.
I saw them in Toronto in the summer of 1985. The opening act was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. One of the best concerts I've been to and certainly the best rock concert.
Rare Bands can perform on stage live half as well as these guys nowadays....the whole band smiling and enjoying playing, making it look easy. The crowd could tell they were seeing magic that night, and they knew it and smiles all around the crowd as well. That's how you put on a show
Love your Reaction Dire Straits are a LEGEND and Mark is one of the Best Guitar Players of all time.Their Live Performances from Alchemy Live are among the Best EVER !
Fun watching with you. Dire Straits is a great band. They had it down and tight. Mark is one of the most overlooked guitar players. Nobody plays in the same finger picking style. Some similar but not the same.
Great band, great song, the whole album awesome. All the musicians are spectacular. And Marc is in that special class of guitarist. Will always be one of my favorites. They had their own unique sound.
This and Zeppelin Since I've Been Loving You 1973 at MSG are the two top live performances ever in my book. Terry Williams owns this performance with his drumming. His sticks are dynamite!
Great Job young Men!!! You guys actually let us here the song uninterrupted. Love these reactions. Most times less talking is great trait. Keep rocking. Bless you all!
Possibly their best song ever. And they did a few great ones. Knopfler in his own, even more than Local Hero. Of course also Money for Nothing and Walk of Life from Soldiers in Arms.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. The best part of this video is how much fun they're having.😎 Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
Hi, always loving your reactions to my favorite band and guitarist. As well as this performance I think you will love the song called Calling Elvis from DIRE STRAITS - Live On The Night 1993. It has a few little surprises towards the end that will freak you out. Anyway Cheers All the best from Australia 😊🎸🎸🎸
Many years ago, I saw John Peel live, and he definitely said that he turned Dire Straits down. It was a DJ called Charlie Gillet who introduced them to British radio.
I'm glad you liked alchemy live, sultans of swing. 👍. I always think dire straits are better off heard, not seen 😜 the performance looks so old, but the music still rocks 👍
I get what you mean, but being able to see the interplay here and the flow as individual masters combine to create something greater than the sum of its parts is truly an unmissable experience.
Not one band today that can even compare ans we had 100s this good in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. A 1000 years from now people will be listening to classic rock.
I know everyone is going on and on about this life performance, but I really think you ought to listen to the original version. It has a fabulous Melody we just hard to make out with the way that Marc is riffing. Don't forget to check out the lyrics, and the history of this song. It's really a fun read.
Do you guys know any Zam Rock? Classic rock from 1960s and 70s Zambia - the most underrated music scene ever. Look it up you will find some absolute gold!
My wife had only ever heard the studio version of the song, which she really enjoyed. On my playlist in the car, I only have the Alchemy version. So she got used to hearing that. Now she tells me she can't listen to the studio version anymore, because it doesn't have the incredible drum work that Alchemy had. Go Terry Williams!
For all you yanks its a song about when Mark Knopfler went into a bar in London and a crowd of boys fooling around in the corner were making fun of the old guys on stage called the sultans of swing until the guitarist played a solo and they were blown away. True story !!!!!
check out Australian music Cold Chisel, Hunters & Collectors, INXS, ACDC, Baby Animals, Australian crawl, Paul Kelly, goanna, icehouse, Pseudo Echo, Vance Joy, Empire of the Sun, Big pig, the divinyls, the Angels, The Waifs, hoodoo gurus, men at work / colin hay, ect ect ect
The drummer lifts this song to another level.
Terry Williams.
He is truly amazing here ! he really complements the Amazing Legend Mark and the awesome Keyboard player i believe John Illsley who is incredible as well.
The man Terry made the Video, but they all did, in their own way, but he and Mr K are a bad men.
What is the one on the right doing there he looks bored as hell , is he on something. The one in middle is having a great time.
One of the greatest guitar players EVER.
Tommy Emmanuel
Mark is a left handed person but taught himself to play right handed because his sister told him to.
@@reenstierna6111 My sister told me i shouldn't play left or right handed

@@reenstierna6111 Phil was a little better, just imagine🎸
BTW- MARK (Lead Guitarist. & Singer) IS NOT USING A GUITAR PICK….FINGERS ONLY !
2 fingers and a thumb to be precise
To be fair, if you've got decent nails ... it's more like 2-4 picks. That's how I do it
I'm an old lady, my friends, but this song still gives me chills.
Same here!
ME TOO! This is the most sublimely perfect song ever.
Me four.
Dire straights was cruising for me playing pool and chilling.. and then a breakup after many years..and their music was still somehow comforting ...from another old lady

Whaaa is just the TRUE from FRANCE !
The follow-up music by M. Knopfler is also incredible!
Music today is just shit! must be seminaked and have 0 talent.
That whole Alchemy tour is possibly the greatest live performance ever.
The drummer is on a different planet. Amazing
Terry Williams on drums.
Sounds like he's building a shed!
He is like a wild animal ..i love it ..amazing .😊
Damn drummer was killin it
The way they're just jamming the heck out and improvising has to be some of the best there's ever been.
As good a performance as this was, Mark Knopfler's abilities to write, sing and perform have progressively improved over time. A musical genius in my book.
Agreed. IMHO his Solo works have eclipsed his 'Big Band' era, magic times though they were.
Best live guitar performance ever!
Mmmmm, i watch Europa ( Live) from Carlos Santana i couple of minutes ago....
It's a finalist. Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana's Eyesight to the Blind/Why Does Love Have to be so Sad medley from Clapton's Crossroads 2 set and the entire Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's video would be up there too.
I love how the guy in the middle is catching vibe! This song is a rock & roll masterpiece that takes me back to my youth!
Best live performance of this song I think I've seen. Glad you lads enjoyed it 🤘
That drummer is really killin it. So Is Mark!

Are you talking about at the El Mocambo?
@@dannygjk It was a huge indoor arena, can't recall the name. Probably where the Maple Leafs played at the time.
I’m jealous!
My goodness ...see how effortlessly he plays that guitar.😊
Mark Knopfler is a God, what a incredible artist.
I’ve heard this song before, but not this particular performance. Impressive! In particular Mark and the drummer play like they’ve got three arms.
Did you understand the lyrics? ... it was a snapshot of a true moment in time, besides the tight band and Knopfler's undoubted genius.
As good and legendary the band are the drummer steals the show on this, epic beats x
He makes me think of Animal on Sesame St!
That was a master class of rock music at it's finest. Great post guys.
Mark wrote this at the age of 15. Realest at 30. How COOL is That!!!
Mark wasn't in London when he was 15. He was still in Newcastle.

Stunning drumming! 10 minutes of solid rapid-fire beat-slinging!
id add Queens performance at Live Aid
Cheap Trick Live AT BUDOKAN, particularly "Surrender".
Love your reaction guys to one of my favorite performances
You can admit that M.K is a genuis, a master, a giant in playing guitar.
He is the Big Reference of many guitarists.
Adel Houdrouge.

THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER SIMPLE !!!!
He uses 3 finger pickin like on a banjo
@bobmiller9313
Yeah he's always been a finger picker.
As usual the answer is musicianship.
Mark Knopfler has an unmistakable sound.
