Mark Knopfler is left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players, he was self taught, and plucks the strings with the tips of his fingers instead of using a pick. And he didn't read music when he was learning. This man is definitely top 10 of all time.
The drummer is Terry Williams, on fire. He is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales. He was known for hitting the drums very hard, and in my opinion, he was one of the best technical drummers around. His power and precision in this performance was unmatched. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and likely the best finger picker. This performance is regarded as one of the best live performances in rock history. Other Dire Straits songs to listen to: Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, and Money for Nothing.
I second/third Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy tour - they ended the show with Sultans and then came back with TR for an encore and blew the roof off. I saw them live a couple of years later on their Brothers in Arms tour (a couple of weeks before they were at Live Aid): they had a new rhythm guitarist but the rest of the main members were the same, a great concert. Terry Williams is known as a very hard hitter of the drums, much of his strength stems from the fact that as a child he wore leg braces and couldn't walk properly for several years; instead he heaved himself around the house at speed, supported by his arms - there's a documentary about him on RUclips where he talks about this.
Terry Williams was the drummer. That was the first time his dad was in the crowd seeing him live. Mark Knopfler said, "just go for it pal, we'll follow you".
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑🤑🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩
Yeah :-D It's just like doing his groceries with some poeple he know (While playing (IMO) the best guitarsolo ever). In my eyes he is the very best gitarist of them all
I am so happy that you liked this performance! I was sweating for a second before I clicked to watch 😂 The lead singer/guitarist is Mark Knopfler. For me, he’s one of the greatest, but so many people aren’t familiar with him. I love the dynamics of this performance and how much fun they are having. Thanks for reacting to this one. I guess I’m 2 for 2 with the non-Prince suggestions!
So glad you found this hidden gem , marks guitar playing is extremely beautiful and unique, unlike other players, mark uses techniques with his right hand, such as chicken picking, using the thumb on the base strings and second and third finger on the higher strings to create rhythm, and the flamenco technique used here in rhythm, which is a Spanish technique that uses upstrokes and down strokes with your right hand.
I remind you all Mark Knopfler is nt just a such class guitarist but he composed all music of Dire Straits and he s still doing it now...his songwriting skills are to be admired aa well .To play the guitar in that fantastic way WHILE you sing LIVE on stage..well..not many could do it.This concert is to be the furst one when wireless technology was used.
So few guitarists have a truly unique style/voice. Knopfler is special. Have you done SRV or Lindsey Buckingham yet? Also - Derek Trucks will blow your mind
IF you think this is a masterpiece you should check THELEGRAPH ROAD from same live performance and i bet you ll change your mind..it s a MUST see.Loved your reaction and thoughts!!
I understand a twenty year old may not have heard of Dire Straits. But im always skeptic because there are just so many reaction videos where they obviously know...Anyway, your reaction was one of the better! It was very obvious you enjoyed it and noticed the insane breaks and "finger work" Mark is famous for. I grew up with sultans and it's one of the best songs ever produced. Thank you!❤❤ ❤❤
Nice reaction. Glad to see you enjoying the magnificent Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. Mark killed it on the guitar like he always does, and Terry Williams killed it on the drums. Check out Telegraph Road from the Alchemy album. You will not be sorry. It is a an absolute masterpiece !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No one ever mentions the album "Sailing to Philadelphia " its my favorite. If you are a fan of history you will really like the title song S.T.P. He tells the story of a unique part of Southern USA history. No,nothing to do with the war of Northern agression. Several songs are stories of what the band saw on their USA tour. Mark Knopfler is an old soul, storyteller&poet of the highest order. And of course master musician. Let me go on....a kind, gracious true gentleman. Has given millions to youth (and other)charities. Every member of his band is talented beyond. Best songs to get to know Dire Straights .....Telegraph Road,Tunnel of Love ,Romeo & Juliet. And BROTHERS IN ARMS !!!!!! That should be your next review of this great band.
Drummer (Terry Williams) is killing it as it was the first time his dad went tosee him live...he was on fire, like every dad he wanted his son to be an engineer etc but he chose drums, his dad only changed his mind when he saw millions of dollars coming in (in his case pounds as he's British) and hello he was there...cheering.
Sultans of swing is not the 2 different songs you are referring too. This is about a Jazz band in a London pub that Mark went in. When they had announced they are the Sultans of swing, the idea came to him to write the song because he thought they definitely was not Sultans of anything let alone swing. The song he wrote around the time of the Falklands war is Brothers in Arms and the song you mention referring his ex girlfriend is Romeo and Juliet.

One of the greatest live performances ever recorded! Such talent!
This drummer is amazing. I hope you get to enjoy as many times as I have. This one is a gem.

Telegraph Road from this concert. Blow you away.

If he was the drummer on their first album I agree. But if not this drumming is exceptional
@@stevesmith2373Pick Withers was the drummer on their first album I think
@@erksworld9661They ended the show with ‘Going Home’…‘Sultans of Swing’ was no 5
Terry Williams was the drummer. That was the first time his dad was in the crowd seeing him live. Mark Knopfler said, "just go for it pal, we'll follow you".
Mark Knopler is one of the greatest guitartists ever. And the best finger plucker. No pick. He is magic with the guitar
Mark is left handed and plays right handed. He always said the left hand seems to do all the work and it worked for him.
Mark played without a pick. He has talented nose pickers for sure.
He might be not everybody's taste with his vocals. This is why he lets the guitar sing.
@@felixfriedrich8534Listen to some Rap or Hip Hop and then let's talk about Vocals.
Thanks man for letting the music play with minimal interruptions. The way it should be done. Best concert on RUclips ❤

More amazing picking and plucking on his acoustic guitar from the 1993 On The Night performance of Private Investigations. You won’t be disappointed.
Mark seems to be having so much fun
So smooth and confident AF

I really like this ! I agree with you on the guitar playing . 🔥🔥🔥
Best live performance ever 😊😊😊

Band "Focus" - Track " Hocus Pocus" ................. bow your mind..... guaranteed !
Mark uses 3 finger style pickin like on a banjo 👍
Terry Williams with the great "in the pocket" stickwork! Very underrated as a drummer!

Mark Knophler is one the best guitarists alive today. He has just released his 10th studio album.
They are playing fasrwr than the studio version. Mark keeps looking back at Terry and smiling because he kept going faster.
The best of the best
checkin in...

Mark Knopfler guitarist name.
DS is just ridiculous live!
Mark wrote this song after the Falklands War and seeing his ex-girlfriend on TV talking about him and referring to him as a fling.
