Alchemy is one of the best live albums ever made. Tunnel Of Love should be the next one, along with Telegraph Road and Private Investigations
Here was one of the few times MK was ALMOST upstaged---drummer Terry Williams was absolute fire(there's a point where MK talks with bassist John Illsley and nods at Williams, they both grin)

Mark is still at it. His new album drops April 12. He may not be as quick in his 70's as he was in the 70's but the sound is pure. He has been a gift to generations and needs to be known by them imho. His solo career is starting to dwarf Dire Straits in terms of great songs.

Best live I’ve ever seen. Some are very close, but this is it. It’s what music was like in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s.

My sister got me to stop and listen to a Bob Dylan song and asked me to guess the other player on the song, took only 1 note for me to figure it was Mark Knopfler. She knew id guess it but couldnt believe it took just 1 note to know it was him.

The drummer Terry Williams father was in the audience this night, so he really let loose.
Marks picking came from when he could only afford a second hand acoustic he found he got a better sound without a plectrum

This recording is 40 years old and still sounds fantastic.
I was at this gig and you felt that they were really having fun, they got it spot on.
Sometimes the solos go on too long, never felt that way at this gig, it was really banging!
For me, Terry Williams was the unexpected star, you won't see better live drumming.
There were two keyboardists, as said below.
Now you have to react to the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road, it was the encore

Mark Knopfler IS considered one the greatest guitar players in the world and it is because of way more than his 'tone'. He can use a lot of notes or speak volumes with just a few and THAT sets him apart, because there are few in the world that can do that. It's a thousand times harder than playing fast and saying nothing which is what most 'metal', hard rock guitarists only are able to cobble together.

I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band, and he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to his unique sound, the fact that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and transitions with and through his guitar, Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy!

Dire Straits started as a four-part band, and that's how they recorded Sultans on their first album. The band kept getting bigger, though. Keyboards first, then saxophone. They had a pedal steel in there before they were done. And Mark's solo stuff could have anything, including fiddle and bagpipe.

  • @StevenQ74
    @StevenQ74 8 месяцев назад +5

There were 2 keyboard players Alan Clark and Tommy Mandel, but Mandel was hired for this tour and was never part of Dire Straits. After this tour Mark met Guy Fletcher while working on a movie score and he became the 2nd Dire Straits keyboardist and stilll plays in Marks solo band until today.

    Fun Facts:
Mark Knopler (red) naturally played left handed, but learned to play right handed for better comtrol.
    He didnt use a pick.
David Knopler, black suit is Mark's younger brother.
Terry Williams was the drummer. His Dad had never seen him perform at a live concert. This was the first.
    Terry went crazy.
John Isley Bass player killed it. His choreography kept things moving.

Ive seen dozens of reaction videos of this Song and you are the First One that bothers to comment on the Guitar performance. Ive played this Song in this version for over 25 years now and yet whenever i listen to It It still seems completely on a different level. Playing It the way he does Is extremely, extremely difficult.
