You love it, don't you. "Every man has to die." When the vets came home from Vietnam, I was a little kid. The first 10 years of my life. I was and am a very sensitive, compassionate person. Empathetic even. It broke my heart seeing the vets. Men walking on crutches in the shopping mall. Pant leg neatly folded up and ironed in place. Where the leg he given for us should still be. This song is such a sweet, delicate tribute to those precious individuals who came back haunted or came back in a box. I apologize for my rant on the "Little Darkie" reaction. It traumatized me. We have one beautiful place that we all share. Why not throw out positivity instead of verbal violence? ❤ Much love❤
The line is “every man has to die”, but the sentiment is the same. The most important line in the song is the last “We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms”
Peter, I think you are right about that being the most important line. Many people miss what Knopfler is saying about war by only seeing 'brothers in arms' as the friends who have your back. Instead, Knopfler realizes all the soldiers, including those on the other side, are brothers in arms.

This song was written about the Falklands War and the soldier shot is believed to be Lieutenant Lawrence shot by an Argentinian Sniper on a mist covered Mt Tumbledown as the Argentinians were retreating to Port Stanley...he was shot in the head and lost a large part of his brain...his fellow soldiers saved his life as he was pronounced KIA twice but managed to survive...the Brothers in Arms are not just about your fellow soldiers, its also about the soldiers they were fighting as being Brothers in Arms as the British had a great deal of respect for the opposing forces as a lot of them were conscripts, plus the Argentinian Air Force who were incredibly brave during the conflict, however although the British were out numbered 10 to 1 and the Argentinians embedded in positions , a lot were conscripts and lacked the training to fight a war against professional soldiers ...❤

An incredible song written by Mark Knopfler, he wrote it during the Falklands War in 1982, but of course it can refer to any conflict. This song is so powerful and emotional, Mark's guitar sound goes straight to your soul, and the video is so evocative. Ok god dammit. This might be the first time as adult listening to this. I’m vet I’m about in tears halfway through. This is tough. How did I not remember these lyrics🫡
As a young South African in the 80's this song struck a deep chord in many of us who went of to fight in the bush war this song carried many of us through the best and worst of times and fought in a war not all of us believed in and among us there were all colors and creeds but we were all brothers. Years later I used to work with a man who was my enemy during that war and even he was my brother.
This is an Anti-war song. In the first two verses, the speaker is addressing his own comrades, the "brothers in arms". Only in the final line does it become clear that all enemy soldiers are also meant by the "brothers in arms". We are all human beings, and in this function "brothers in arms" - "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms"!
" . . . . we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms." I'm in my 60s, looking back and realising, those are some of the truest words ever spoken.
This one never ceases to give me chills. One of the most beautiful, haunting songs about soldiers & times of war. Mark Knopfler is just one of those artists - hits you in the heart ♥️ “We (anyone in the world, really) are fools to make war on our brothers in arms” Deep down, armies everywhere, are our brothers in arms
Mark Knopler wrote this song in response to the Falkland War (1982) and Dire Straits released it in 1985. (Another senseless war between Argentina and UK over a few small islands. Prince Andrew flew helicopters in this war.) And, yes, check out Home Free's version (the arrangement was done by the Finnish a capella group Club For Five); one of HF's best. Yes, this song reminds me of how the Vietnam vets were poorly treated (I remember). It also reminds me of today's conflicts/ wars. We never learn. We're fools to make war with our brothers in arms.
@@andylong6777 We (the world) never learn that war is always the answer. Imperial Japan thought war on the US was the answer to its ambitions. I am not a roll-over-and-play-dead dove nor am I a shoot-first-ask-questions-later hawk. We (the world) are fools to not respect each other, but respect does not mean tolerating the intolerable.
Senseless war in 1982 yes, but with enormous significance which you would do well to research and understand before dismissing it "over a few small islands". This was a war unlike any the US has entered into since the war of independence, it was over a genuine invasion od British Territory where the local population had no desire whatsoever to live under Argentinian rule.
The best line in this song is "we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms". When people learn who and what every war has really been fought for, they will understand that every soldier fought against is a brother in arms and they have always been fighting for the only enemy of the people of the world. The real enemy that learnt long ago, how to make us all believe our enemies are our brothers in arms in other countries. Now they rule 194 countries.
Great reaction. Lead guitarist is Mark Knopfler from my home city o Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. Mark wrote the song in tribute to my the soldiers who fought in the Falklands war in 1982. Great band with big back catalogue of songs LP
To me, personally the most moving lines are "Thru these fields of destruction, baptisms of fire, I witnessed your suffering, as the battle raged high. And though they did hurt me so bad, in the fear and alarm, you did not desert me, my brothers in arms" That last part, "you did not desert me, my brothers in arms", is the one that kind of chokes me up, even though I was never in the military or in combat. But I can try to imagine being wounded badly on the battlefield, in tremendous pain and afraid, feeling like maybe I was going to die alone, and then the tremendous relief at seeing my brothers coming to save me, being SO grateful that they didn't desert me, even though coming to try to drag me to safety would put they themselves in more danger. Man, that's the ultimate love and brotherhood I think. What a great song Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, as with a lot of people I think, this is what I'd call a truly loved song for me. Not just the lyrics, but the guitar playing is so, so beautiful and so expressive, so powerful.
It was about the Falklands War in the 80’s mate, and you have bought yourself into a rabbit hole with Dire Straits BP. But have a look at Telegraph Road, weird that it’s an English group singing about American History, just brilliant. Loving your stuff bro, Go Well.
Home Free also did another song that BP would probably enjoy "God Bless the U.S.A." (featuring Lee Greenwood and The United States Air Force Band). Might be cool for him to do a reaction to that one sometime around July 4th.
I saw them live in 1985. My first proper concert, and still my favourite. They were simply magnificent. Do the version of Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy Live concert, and you'll be blown away.
I love this reaction. The more you listen to this, it takes on new meaning. Is this from the perspective of a dying soldier on the battlefield? This is a song that will forever be on my list of favorites. This song, as well as the National Anthem will bring a tear to my eyes every time. I hear the National Anthem and see the Battle of Fort McHenry. Once you learn what it means, you can never hear it again in the same way again.
Great Song and Tribute to every Soldiers and Veterans that fought in every war from beginning of Nations Country's Nd Soldiers serving they're Country's
My favorite episode of Miami Vice called "Out where the Busses Don't Run" ends with this song as a background to the ending. I watch the video on RUclips a lot. This was the perfect selection. My favorite Dire Straits song as well.
I was watching the final episode of The Grand Tour when the opening sound of this song came up in the background and I recognized it immediately, even before the opening guitar riff; what an emotional moment! Clarkson, Hammond, and May may not have been soldiers, but they went through a lot together in their 22 years on the air. To whoever did the musical programming for that show, this was a great choice for that section!
I just listened and no it doesnt work at all, in fact even though the singers are relatively decent they ruin this song sorry but they just do it no justice at all, this is a song best performed by the creators
Another beautiful rendition of this song is Songs for Montserrat. Mark Knopfler performs with a full orchestra, and the song even fits the tribute. Montserrat was where a lot of classic albums were recorded and then got destroyed by a natural disaster. Other performers included in the performance are Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and Phil Collins. Edit: Music for Montserrat - ruclips.net/video/R9ehJ9fBe9Q/видео.htmlsi=Tw1-wMrcY7MGOZt8
Brothers In Arms is a great track, and an emotional journey.... Telegraph Road and Private Investigations are incredible.... you've never heard anything like them
Brother you got the right song for the right day. THANK YOU from 20 year U.S.A.F. Vet. Home Free does a cover of this which is great. His lyrics are hard to pickup but his guitar talks for him in this song.
Vietnam was hell on earth for our boys. I had a draft deferment due to a HS football knee reconstruction but lost over 25 friends, neighbors, cousins & uncles to it. I grew up in a small blue collar town in TN, so a high number of the men drafted.
Dire Straits was a British band that existed from 1977 to 1995. The lineup changed a lot, but the two constants were bass player John Illsley (the tall one with curly black hair) and guitarist/lead singer/songwriter Mark Knopfler (with the headband). Mark K. is 74 years old and still working in music. His latest album came out in April 2024. Illsley, the same age, has switched from music to visual arts and also owns a pub and some hotels.
Fitting tribute for Memorial Day, BP. I remember Dire Straits during the 80s & this song is a sobering reminder of the price paid by so many who fought in wars. I always kinda felt like Dire Straits sounded like what you'd get if you combined Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers with Eric Clapton. Mark Knoffler's voice & guitar just have that vibe. They're a perfect blend of awesomeness & deserve much more recognition today than they get. Their Bros in Arms album was great & set a record for the 1st album to sell over 1 million copies in CD format. If you want a little bit lighter side of them, Money for Nothing (written as a result of a conversation overheard in line at a store) and Walk of Life (video is awesome, too) would be 2 suggestions. In addition, there's "So Far Away" from the same album, which was a hit. Btw...get you some Burt's Bees lip balm for those dry lips, buddy.
The perfect song for a Memorial Day reaction. I believe it was written about the time of the Falkland Islands war, but represents the soldiers of all wars well.
Enjoyed your words, they were very meaningful. And yes having kids changes it. Mine are 26 and 23 and I still worry about their safety. In another time and country my son could have had to go off to war. Take care 💜
Money For Nothing literally written while having coffee somewhere and actually hearing those words( lyrics) spoken by actual guys passing by them...great song written at the beginning when MTV started up...

I saw this performed live back in 1986 in an open air concert..... the guitar sound on this tune was just haunting as I remember...... not a murmur from the audience.... just mark knoffler and the band filling that audible space.... I remember now being transfixed by it..... "we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms..."

I'm up in Canada so we never got that service unless we paid a pretty penny for it, thank goodness Much Music came along lol!!! Love the hauntingness of this tune, appreciate it even more now as I am approaching senior territory.
I tried to find it in the videos you’ve posted but didn’t see it; Home Free did a cover of this song which is beautiful. If you haven’t reacted to their version of it would be great if you would.
mark recently auctioned his guitar collection (or about 120 of them). you can watch it on youtube somewhere. he’s not long released an album too and can definitely still play but i think he’s starting to call it a day
You were bang on the money about it being about the Vietnam vets. It was released in the mid 80s, not long after the conclusion of that conflict, and it was about what hardships they were getting when they returned. What gets me is the way he played the guitar in this haunting melody. As another reactor put it, the guitar was crying, and I could not agree more. Mark Knopfler really knows to make the instrument not only sing, but emote too.
Great reaction. I am from Norway and have never been in a war. My grandfather and great grandfather were. I have done my military service. But being at war, I can hardly understand. Must create a special bond with your fellow soldiers.
WOW. Saw the brothers in arms tour in Feb '86, blew my mind. Also saw "The Oils" (midnight oil) in 86 and 23, The only thing that comes close to hearing Mark's guitar is seeing Pete dance both live. I missed some amazing bands, but i was so blessed to see some of those I did. Weddings Parties Anything, "A Tale They Won't Believe" Everything great beat with added cannibalism and all true.
Home Free does an amazing cover of this song if you want to hear it acapella. Their version makes it much easier to understand what's being said and has outstanding harmonies that more than make up for not having a guitar.
Mark Knopfler has a really distinctive sound that is instantly recognisable, very smooth and clean. One of the truly great guitarists. You are in for a ride my friend. Enjoy ✌️
This one makes me cry. And it's the army as well as the Navy, Marines, and the Air Force... Plus the national guards. So many more that I'm probably leaving out. My grandfather was in world war I, dad in world war II, my brother's in the Vietnam war. And then there's our police.
Mark Knopfler is the Jedi Master at “chicken picking” the guitar. His playing is incredibly distinctive and seeing them live in 1992 was one of the greatest moments in my life. I’ve seen so many great bands and musicians throughout my life, but that’s the one that stands out for me. He is a GOAT. Next up should be Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live.
Bruhhhhhh cmon man. My parents played this album on repeat for what feels likes a couple years. We would go on a road trip and myself and my brothers would fall to sleep to this albumn every weekend for years. I’m all up in my feelz now. Thank you good sir.
'Brothers in Arms' really hit me to my heart. To think of such grief, maybe WW 1, WW2, Vietnam, so deep. Listening to Mark Knopfler is really deep & very good listening to the lyrics.
Love your reaction, Brother. I grew up listening to Dire Straits...So, your reaction makes me feel good that someone from a younger generation sees the value in older talent, and it evoked a real feeling in you. So, Mark Knopfler achieved his goal!

That last part, "you did not desert me, my brothers in arms", is the one that kind of chokes me up, even though I was never in the military or in combat.
"We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms". Damn right! Respect the veterans from all countries who fight (or fought) the good fight.
Omg, I'm so excited!!
It was about the Falklands War in the 80’s mate, and you have bought yourself into a rabbit hole with Dire Straits BP.
But have a look at Telegraph Road, weird that it’s an English group singing about American History, just brilliant.
Loving your stuff bro, Go Well.
Goosebumps everytime 👁️😥. immensely powerful.
Home Free, the acapella group does a hauntingly beautiful video of this song. It is well worth your time to check it out.
It was AMAZING!
Totally agree!!!
It's good, I would agree, but it can't hold a candle to this original.
Love Mark!! On my Mt Rushmore of favorite musicians!! ❤
"we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms"
most powerful line in a song
both sides, are brothers in arms... fighting a wealthy man's war 💔
This is sooooooo haunting.....Mark's voice and epic guitar sound is ICONIC!!!......EPIC SONG.
Can't listen to this without a little tear for my friends now gone, rip brothers ❤
A timeless song. I love it so much. War is so useless. 😥Thank you for your reaction ❤
One of my favourite Dire Straits songs. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing captivates.
The thoughts of a man, about to die, who will buried where he fell, instead of going back home like his brothers-in-arms! RIP Sam and Al.
This is one of the players that guitar nerds go on about with their guitar tone. Its so good.
Perfect song for Memorial Day.
Such an awesome song for today. Some gave alll....all gave some. Remember them this Memorial Day.
"Some gave all....all gave some" - Billy Ray Cyrus. Love that song as well.
Yes with bruce mcgill i think my favourite episode
@@bone3442 yes and he played the part perfectly.
Watch the Home Free cover, BEAUTIFUL and so moving also.
A beautiful cover of this song is the Home Free one. Those voices sound like a pipe organ at times.
He’s a master on guitar he makes his guitar 🎸 bring his soul out like Gilmore Awesome
You should listen to the Home Free cover of this song. It is beautiful and haunting. Tim the bas and Chance the bartone sing the leads.
Brothers in Arms itself was recorded in Montserrat :)
Love this song, I have it on a cassette tape by the same name. Mark can really mack that guitar cry. He's so good.
A powerful video with even more powerful lyrics. One of the best anti-war songs ever written and perfectly performed by Dire Straits.
Absolutely beautiful song ❤
Enjoyed your words, they were very meaningful. And yes having kids changes it. Mine are 26 and 23 and I still worry about their safety. In another time and country my son could have had to go off to war. Take care 💜
Money For Nothing and Walk Of Life are the songs you're looking for from these guys, friend.
Money For Nothing literally written while having coffee somewhere and actually hearing those words( lyrics) spoken by actual guys passing by them...great song written at the beginning when MTV started up...
I knew guys that I grew up with who went to Vietnam and I'll tell you they didn't come back the same guys I knew...awful!
@@Cchan53they were written while he was in a store that sold tvs microwave etc all the tvs were tuned to mtv and he heard one of the workers moaning about groups getting their money for nothing. Not in a coffee shop
Home Free has a moving rendition of this that pull your hreat strings. The last line brings it all home, "We are fools to make war on our Brothers in arms." All humans are brothers in arms no matter the place of their birth.
😢 Happy Memorial Day for all that gave their all. R.I.P.
Mark is one of the top five Rock guitarists…….you must watch Freddie sing WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER….Live @Wembley in 1986…..Do not deny yourself this beaut…..definitely the Wembley version……chills.
Probably my favorite song from them, MTV was their biggest hit, but this song always hit me hard
I love this song and I also love home free version of this one to they both catch u in ur feelings if u get a chance u need to do a reaction on theirs to
This was my favorite song on that LP. Dire Straits hit the air waves while I was in high school and MTV was being introduced to the world!!!
If you haven’t reacted to their version of it would be great if you would.
mark recently auctioned his guitar collection (or about 120 of them). you can watch it on youtube somewhere.
he’s not long released an album too and can definitely still play but i think he’s starting to call it a day
Hey there brother! Love your reactions! You seem to have a beautiful soul, and that makes your reactions so much better. Thankyou my man!
Perfect choice for Memorial Day!Thank you.
He said Every MAN has to die.
Great reaction. I am from Norway and have never been in a war. My grandfather and great grandfather were. I have done my military service. But being at war, I can hardly understand. Must create a special bond with your fellow soldiers.
A fantastic reaction and exceptional sentiments - thank you for being so honest and open.
I admire your depth of thought and compassion 🏴
Home Free does an amazing cover of this song if you want to hear it acapella. Their version makes it much easier to understand what's being said and has outstanding harmonies that more than make up for not having a guitar.
This song still hits me, my dad was an ex soldier, the stories hes told me about the things he done and witnessed 😢
Man, glad you enjoyed this but also hope you take a deep dive into their material, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Love your reaction, Brother. I grew up listening to Dire Straits...So, your reaction makes me feel good that someone from a younger generation sees the value in older talent, and it evoked a real feeling in you. So, Mark Knopfler achieved his goal!
Chills every time I hear this.
It seems that war is close again and I wish all my potential allies and ennemies to listen to this song before it happens. Love you Dad
We only have one group of enemies and they meet in expensive hotels to plan how to make people hate and fight each other for their benefit.
Sultans of swing amazing guitar work 🇬🇧😊
