I was there too, all the way from Rotterdam to Hammersmith Odeon Stadium London in 1983 👍👍 it was worth crossing 'the Dire Straits' (what means The Channel between UK and Netherlands)
I think this is the best live performance EVER! I love Mark Knopfler but Terry Williams deserves so much praise for his performance on drums! Just amazing!
Really enjoyed watching you enjoy this live video. I’m 72 years old and loved this song the first time I heard it on the radio. But this live video was simply amazing! My favorite live video of all time! Peace!
That nights performance has been voted best live performance by many other band members from across the world it doesn't get the credit it deserves enjoyed watching you smiling and loving it
As someone who grew up when this was happening, I'm so glad that later generations are able to really appreciate it, (and also that, having bought the LPs and CDs, I and everyone else can now see the performances for free.)
What I cannot believe is that it has been 40 years and I am still emotionally stunned by this performance, especially when Mark goes into the slow solo after the breakdown. He is literally pulling my heart strings each and every time.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Mark Knopfler is actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players. He's self taught and plucks the strings with the tips of his fingers. My GOAT for sure.
Often not appreciated is Knopfler's ability to tell a story. All his songs tell an amazing story. His artistry as a guitarist is undisputed but his talent as a poet is not often recognised. Great ballads like Telegraph Road, Brothers In Arms, Sailing To Philadelphia, Romeo & Juliet and even Money For Nothing illustrate Knopfler's powers of observation, and a capacity to put this into a magnificent package of notes and words. Listen closely to the lyrics - and if possible, read them from a lyrics score. This will add a new dimension to your appreciation of his great talent.
Oh I agree. In past 4months I've mentioned a time or two M.K. artistry as a poet and storyteller. You elaborated beautifully. And you are the first I've seen(hundreds of reviews and comments)to mention Sailing to Philadelphia,my favorite song and album. But it's almost like no one else ever of it. I saw MK in an interview recently. I was so shocked til I realized it's been about 50 years! I'm an old lady and he is an old man. What a splendid old man! Three piece suit, kind face and cultured manners. No sign of excessive living. He conversed so easily, not one awkward moment in a very long interview and was quite funny. I guess I am still a fan. The reason for the interview was an event at Sotheby's where he auctioned off part of his guitar collection and gave 11 million $ to charity. GOD bless you Mr.Knopfler.
He also creates an atmosphere with his music to match his lyrics!!! Down to the waterline & southbound again are good examples, as is telegraph road that you mentioned.
@@terrygray6475 I lived in Italy & if I remember correctly, there is a different term to describe the type of singer you mentioned. It's hard to translate but you have a singer/songwriter & then there's singer storyteller!!!
I've been loving this song for the past 40 plus years, and it never gets old in fact the older I get the more I appreciate their amazing talents. I liked how you discussed how in shape they have to be and the stamina they have to have to perform. I would love to see you check out the talking heads live performance of life in wartime. It will blow your mind.
Dear friend, the drummer´s dad was in the audience, watching his son for the first time. The drummer was energised and played it a bit too fast, but the rest of the band was ok with it. They found it hillarious. Be safe at home. Elmar from Germany
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck. Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
The studio version of "Sultans of Swing" was Dire Straits first single from their first album in 1978 and was a hit. This 1983 "Alchemy Live" take is a longer version and with mostly different personnel than the original band. They had just ended a tour so the band was really tight and they did two concerts in London that were recorded and released the next year on an "Alchemy Live" album. The concert video was released a few years later.
Mark Knopfler is my number one guitarist of all time. Absolute legend! You need to check out "Telegraph Road" from the same concert, it's a work of art. And then "Private Investigations", but the version from their concert in Nimes, France in 1992. It was that concert that they made their "On The Night" dvd - that concert is my number one destination when I finally get my hands on a time machine. 😂
Thank heavens for RUclips!!! I'm a baby boomer so being able to watch these music videos over and over again is a blessing. And for you younger music lovers...wow! In the "olden days" this would be been a once in a lifetime experience. I love your love of music!❤
One of the greatest live performances ever. Mark was on point. One of the best guitarists in the world. But he will tell you he barely knows how to hold the thing. The drummer is Terry Williams and was on fire. He is now retired, in his late 70s, living in Swansea Wales.
So much to say. This was not the drummer in the studio version. The studio vocals were better, in my opinion, but the music in this version are the best. Dire Straits are on anyone who loves music’s playlist. The drummer drives the song. Yes, the guitar gets the glory, and rightly so. But the drummer sets the stage, and tells the story. This kid is phenomenal.

I have never heard another guitarist play as cleanly as Mark. Uses his fingers (no pick) with no distortion as his fingers move up and dowm on the strings.

As much as Mark is a Virtuoso, he surrounds himself with master musicians. That says much about MK.
What a wonderful comment. I agree with all you say and I've been a Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits devotee since '78. Every constellation of Dire Straits was completely breathtaking. They all played so tightly together and off one another, especially LIVE, like you say. ❤

♥♥♥♥♥ Cool that you got to see this 🙂 Mark Knopfler is easily one of the best guitarists in the world, and he's still going strong. Love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
This is one of the greatest songs and Mark Knoplers guitar skills are on another level . The finger picking King Mr. Chet Atkins was one of Marks biggest fans and him and Chet done quite a bit of music together. You should check out some of their videos sometime wether you react to them or not. And the lead that Mark plays in this song is absolutely off the chain ⛓️
Was that EPIC, or what!! I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits once, in Orange County California, and Sting came out and sang with'em. Glad you caught this performance. 👊🎶
Great song. In your off time-you n May enjoy an amazing guitarist from UK last name is Montaban. This song he performs is top-tier. Anything by him....
1st time watching this video - there are different version. But this one was the best by far!!!! Thank you for the memories and thank you Dire Strait for an awesome performance.!!!!
Great reaction. I reckon you will have heard this somewhere in your life, I'm sure. Every decent radio station (and supermarket) plays this week in, week out. Great to watch.
Another song from this amazing concert is Telegraph Road. It was written when Dire Straits was traveling from one concert venue to another along Telegraph Road (US Highway #24) in Michigan. Telegraph Road runs north and south 70 miles right along the Detroit border. Mark had a conversation with the bus driver about the history of Detroit and then he wrote this song. It is basically the story of Detroit but could easily be adapted to any large city that was once prosperous but has now fallen into blight and decay. ruclips.net/video/Q1Wp2ASqyxI/видео.htmlfeature=shared Enjoy!
Yep. Queen followed dire straits at live aid. And when I saw the movie I wondered if there would be a mention of them and sure enough you can hear them when freddy us heading to the trailer
Yeees, Dire Straits. Legends ❤ Mark Knopfler is amazing. In my twenties I used to be up until midnight just to hear his Going home at the beginning of night program of my favourite radio station 😂
This is legendary, epic So I am kind of happy you got this one on your list. On of my favourite ❤your reaction is crazy cool 😎 thanks man ❤they started in the late 70😊
Saeed, Luckily I finished my chore during the guitar solo at the end so I was able to enjoy that with you! Are your grandparents still alive? If yes, do you get to see them often? I'm wondering because I am old enough to be your Grandma and I would cherish you as a grandson. I have several grandchildren, there's always room for one more though. I even have several great-grandchildren and it is likely not to be that much longer before another great is added to that and we'll have five-generations in the local paper if there is still a local paper by then! I really enjoy your youthful energy and your insight into things it took me many years to learn the hard way. Enjoy the rest of your day I don't know what the time difference is between here and where you are, but I think you are about six or seven hours ahead of me! So it's early morning here and likely early afternoon there? Deb
Sadly they are not and i never really knew them. Only met one grandparent one time. Some things you miss out in life. I hope to be a grandparent one day 😃 Great to hear you have such an amazing family! Beautiful! Its is 1:35 PM right now. Have a wonderful day!
@@SaeedReacts. Saeed, Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that, I had such a great relationship with my grandparents, it's too bad you had to miss out on that! Being a great Grandpa is a great way to get the feeling!
Been a fan of cinema and tv since i was 6 years old, so my knowledge of that is quite a bit better. 😀 Now i hope to learn more about all kinds of genres of music. Truly a joy to discover these epic performances. Glad they were recorded. Thanks for watching.
He did a song for a movie, The Princess Bride. This performance made me love a song I already just liked. My favorites of his are Romeo and Juliet, and Skateaway.
Oh yeah, I go way back with this band, still on my playlist as well as "🎸Telegraph Road🎸" which is also on RUclips same venue.👀 I would really enjoy your reaction to that song as well if you could.🙏
I would definitely recommend "Romeo and Juliet". Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan had numerous collaborations, check out Dylan's album "Infidels". Dylan didn't work on Romeo and Juliet directly, but given how much he's featured on this channel, I think Dylan's influence, particularly lyrically, will be abundantly evident.
Don't know if you noticed it or not, but he was playing the guitar without a pick. Maybe they did that slower part just to give the drummer a break, but he was tremendous and the one guy playing several keyboards at once.
Mark did movie soundtracks Princess Bride which won Best Movie that year. As for story telling you should check into the songs he recorded after as a sosl artist
My parents raised me on this kind of music! The whole Brothers in Arms album is amazing! Your Latest Trick is one of my favorite songs! And I actually prefer the studio version over the live version of Sultains of Swing!
Telegraph Road from the same concert is phenomenal 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥 This song came from when Mark went into a small bar to get out of the rain in London. There was a local band playing that were mediocre at best. When they signed off on their set, the vocalist said We Are The Sultan's Of Swing. The rest is history 🤘🏻🤘🏻 "He's done a Columbo on us" 😂😂😂😂😂
I can watch this over and over. This is the third time tonight. LOL. Brits don't normally pronounce the first K before the n. :). This is real music, pre auto tune. You want stamina? Check out Gary Moore, Still Got The Blues. Montreux Jazz Festival. Loved watching you watching this. :)
Of i can suggest : phil collins .’in the air tonight.’ Live in Paris. Also,a less known Artist: Paola nutini’ Iron sky (Abbey road studio version) . For me one of the best songs ever!
I am forever entertained watching young people seeing Dire Straits live for the first time. I am sorry to say young people will never experience this sort of talent live ever. Music has much changed. Everything is different in the 21st century. MK is a poet if you read the lyrics to his music, you will hear better what he is actually saying. Personally, I think Mark is the best guitarist ever because like Hendrix he is so unique. He is a left-handed man playing right-handed & not using a guitar pick he is using his fingers. A neat trick but it makes sense because all the heavy lifting is on his left hand. Rules are made to be broken as did Ludwig Van Beethoven so many years ago. MK too would have been a teacher's worst nightmare, but he did what he wanted all the same. Rules, what music rules are there? None. Saeed, you have never heard this music sound in a movie, or a TV add. The way MK arranges the music is simply brilliant. You have just seen one song of one of the most amazing live performances ever filmed live in 1983 but this song was released in 1978. But Saeed I love to see & hear your reaction xoxo I saw them live so I know how blown away I was leaving the concert. There are no fancy costumes or gimmicks just pure musical genius. And these musicians are having such a great time & it shows. xoxo Enjoy & watch the rest of the concert. The second to last song was the keyboard players time to go wild with so much energy. This whole 90-minute concert is a must have & see forever, now 41 years ago. x
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write this comment. Epic performance. I have seen The Princess Bride and The Color of Money, but didnt know at the time Mark made the music for those films and more. I have a few other reactions to Dire Straits, but i believe one of them is not visible in the US for some reason. Definitely checking out more in the future. Thanks again and have a great day.

Incredible! Awesome you saw them live.
Great song. In your off time-you n
May enjoy an amazing guitarist from UK last name is Montaban. This song he performs is top-tier. Anything by him....
its mastership and flow combined
Masters of their craft. That drummer tho'.... 🥁 ☮
1st time watching this video - there are different version. But this one was the best by far!!!!
Thank you for the memories and thank you Dire Strait for an awesome performance.!!!!
Thanks so much for watching. Epic performance!
Great reaction. I reckon you will have heard this somewhere in your life, I'm sure. Every decent radio station (and supermarket) plays this week in, week out. Great to watch.
Must have. Sounded so familiar. Love it!

Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing that backstory. Definitely want to hear that one.
Brothers in Arms is a song you must hear and listen to the lyrics closely. Beautiful, heart wrenching and his solos are too.
Definitely want to check that one out too. I have a reaction to Tunnel Of Love coming later today.
If you have seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, the finale of this is being played off camera as Queen are preparing to go on Stage for Live Aid.
Right!
Wrong. The Queen concert depicted is Wembley 1985. This video is from Hammersmith in 1983. Alchemy Live tour.
Yep. Queen followed dire straits at live aid. And when I saw the movie I wondered if there would be a mention of them and sure enough you can hear them when freddy us heading to the trailer
His guitar playing is just fabulous!
Yeees, Dire Straits. Legends ❤ Mark Knopfler is amazing. In my twenties I used to be up until midnight just to hear his Going home at the beginning of night program of my favourite radio station 😂
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that. There was no instant music streaming. Special moments!
I thought I was the only one who remembered Columbo. So cool. Great reaction, subbed
R.i.p. Peter Falk. Legend! Thanks for subscribing 🙏🏽❤️
This is legendary, epic
So I am kind of happy you got this one on your list. On of my favourite ❤your reaction is crazy cool 😎 thanks man ❤they started in the late 70😊
One of those well known classics that i never took the time to actually listen to and pay attention. So glad i did. Amazing. Thanks for watching!
I hope to be a grandparent one day 😃
Great to hear you have such an amazing family!
Thank you for the heart, they are always appreciated!
Mark is great in this song, and you did mention the drummer; but that duel between the guitar and the drums in the middle of the song is fantastic.
Good job, you recognize the drums, so fuckin good, guitar and drums on this live video is so eriplacable, sooooooiiiiii good 😊 , good reaction 😊
Incredible performance! Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
You don't this .... but you know 'Columbo'? Lol nice job! In my top 5 all time fav live performances, they looked like they were having a ball
Classic movie!
Nice reaction man check for talegraph road
Thanks! Will add that one to my list.
Guitar George and Harry was in the Easybeats and Guitar George is none other than George Young Angus Young's older brother
Oh yeah, I go way back with this band, still on my playlist as well as "🎸Telegraph Road🎸" which is also on RUclips same venue.👀 I would really enjoy your reaction to that song as well if you could.🙏
That one is on my todo list! Thanks for watching.
@@SaeedReacts. Mark changes up his guitar uses a resonator love the sound looking forward to your reaction when you hear it!
This is70’s not 80’s. This was their debut. I love Mark knofler - 4o years later he is till making great music❤❤❤❤
You should also hear the original album version which is great but it will show how much more they put into this live performance
Will have a listen
Great reaction,love dire straits 👍🇬🇧
Epic performance. Thanks for watching!
Don't know if you noticed it or not, but he was playing the guitar without a pick. Maybe they did that slower part just to give the drummer a break, but he was tremendous and the one guy playing several keyboards at once.
Definitely need to hear the studio version.
Mark did movie soundtracks Princess Bride which won Best Movie that year. As for story telling you should check into the songs he recorded after as a sosl artist
Definitely want to check that out. I know the movie, but need to listen to the music. I believe he also did something for Color of Money.
Don't be ashamed. There's so much really good music from the 50s, 60s and 70s to listen to - and enjoy
Looking forward to discover much more. Thank you for these words, appreciate it.
I just realized the last sound is exactly the same as the last sound of Interstellar's theme by Zimmer.
I need a side by side 😀. Will listen to both endings.
Cool. You could also check Calling Elvis. 🙂
I thought it came out in 78 or 79. I could be wrong. He lives in Tennessee.
Tank you so mutch 🇫🇷🇫🇷👍👍 🎸🎸
Thanks for watching!
My parents raised me on this kind of music! The whole Brothers in Arms album is amazing! Your Latest Trick is one of my favorite songs! And I actually prefer the studio version over the live version of Sultains of Swing!
Definitely must check out more. I listened to Telegraph Road and really enjoyed it.
Telegraph Road from the same concert is phenomenal 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
This song came from when Mark went into a small bar to get out of the rain in London. There was a local band playing that were mediocre at best. When they signed off on their set, the vocalist said We Are The Sultan's Of Swing. The rest is history 🤘🏻🤘🏻
"He's done a Columbo on us" 😂😂😂😂😂
Just one more thing 😁
@@SaeedReacts. 😂😂Iconic
Love the "Columbo" reference! :)
Just one more thing :)
Such an epic song and performance! Thanks for watching and the recommendations!
Pick rocked it. Wow!!!
Really appreciate your reactions
Thank you! Grateful that you are here.
This is in the 80s... but it's NOT typical 80s music. It's a lot closer to (some) typical sounds of the 60s and early 70s.
Of i can suggest : phil collins .’in the air tonight.’ Live in Paris. Also,a less known Artist: Paola nutini’ Iron sky (Abbey road studio version) . For me one of the best songs ever!
I know those songs, but havent seen or heard those specific versions. Definitely want to check them out at some point. Thanks.
You need to listen to Telegraph Road from the same tour
I think that will be the next one i check out. Thanks.
Mark Knopfler makes his guitar sing ❤🎉
