I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! Not only is Mark a guitar virtuoso and finger-plucking genius, but he was also a gifted story-teller /song-writer and composer for the band, and he also always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. This performance is the perfect showcase for this masterpiece, and for their astounding collective musicianship! Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! Another very different but wonderful example of Mark's talent is also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West," also from 'Alchemy Live'. And you have to check out "Brothers in Arms"; maybe watch the video as an appetizer (for the lyrics and meaning of the track) and then dive into a live performance from 'On The Night', or from Nelson Mandela's birthday at Wembley (my personal favourite because of the passion and emotion of that performance). Enjoy!

Matk Knopfler is at heart a storyteller. Telegraph is a major north-south 70-mile (110 km) thoroughfare in Michigan, and Mark Knopfler was inspired to write the song while riding in the front of the tour bus, which made the journey down Telegraph Road. At the same time, Knopfler was reading the novel Growth of the Soil by the Nobel Prize-winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and he was inspired to put the two together and write a song about the beginning of the development along Telegraph Road and the changes over the ensuing decades.

Hi. Love your reaction. Mark Knopfler lead guitarist wrote this song on a bus while touring in U.S. It was going along Telegraph Road and said it seemed to go on forever. If you liked this I guarantee you'll like the song Brothers In Arms from Dire Straits Live "On The Night" 1992.Mark's playing a Pensa Suhr guitar and it is jawdropping and every reactor I've seen literally cried at the end. It was about the Falklands War in early '80s. Anyway love your channel. Cheers, all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

My very first concert back in 1985 was Dire Straits on their Brothers in Arms tour. An unbelievable show with perfect sound, that set the expectations for further concerts in my life very high. And the only ones who could easily surpass this hurdle were Pink Floyd. I can of course recommend Comfortably Numb from the Pulse concert. It also contains what is probably the best guitar solo in rock history

I was there in 1983 and they played like that the whole gig!
    This was the encore.
We didn't think they'd play Telegraph Road at all, its too long as an encore the song is too complicated, it won't work.
    How wrong were we?
Alan Clark's piano/keys was sublime, everyone was on top of their game, how Terry Williams played drums like that for two hours, I just don't know.
They were having an absolute ball!
We stood open mouthed, it was amazing to see

    Hi Saeed
Great reaction thanx. Apologies if the following is longwinded but thought you might like to have the following info::
Dire Straits, a brilliantly gifted band of British musicians, were led by Mark Knopfler, a Geordie, and one of the most celebrated British guitar heroes to emerge in the late 1970s and '80s, a phenomenal finger picking guitarist/singer/prolific songwriter/lyricist/composer/musician, who wrote & arranged every song for Dire Straits 6 albums, before leaving the band in 1995. For the most enjoyable video experience of Dire Strait (according to an early statement by MK) it’s best to avoid the ‘official’ videos, & watch their live undubbed performances that have additional content and are a lot more atmospheric. MK has had a helluva musical career, collaborating with many other famous artists, writing music scores for 9 films, & all the wonderful songs & lyrics for the albums made during his ‘Solo’ career with another band of multitalented musicians. Their 10th album was released this April 2024.
If you want to react to more of Dire Straits huge catalogue of iconic performances, I recommend the following links for starters:

(Inspired by Britain’s short war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, way back in 1982, Mark Knopfler’s emotive song & lyrics ‘Brothers in Arms ‘focuses on the pointlessness of war. The song is a timeless anti-war song which has become an anthem for many ex-servicemen & women & the men & women serving in the armed services today. He sings the lyrics in the voice of a soldier dying on the battlefieldI❤️MK with DS & Solo

Tunnel Of Love - as others write - is a MUST from the phase where Mark incorporated the keyboard player musically. There is an unexpectedly different sounding guitar song Private Investigation (UK no.2, a European; great transitions).
However, you should choose a live version from the first guitar-only phase (Sultan Of Swing) like Once Upon a Time In The West/perhaps Alchemy 1983 so that you understand the band's entire development. He later added a saxophonist until Mark got fed up with "the big commercial music business" around 1996. But he still makes fantastic music today, as the current album One Deep River shows. I give him great respect and wish him all the best.

People seem to miss how political this song is... he paints a picture of a society growing from scratch, it's impossible to not feel for the people living there (and it's a real place! I didn't know that the first time I heard this song as a child), but the point is to bring us up to present day, and to a society on the brink of despair because of "austerity" policy and outsourcing-driven unemployment. And he warns that he's remembering things he shouldn't ("run every red light on memory lane"), and that he's seen this kind of despair explode into flames before.

Now, I guess you should try something completely different from Dire Straits, something deeply moving. That is "Brothers in Arms". The studio version is best, because the acoustics are so specific for the song, and unlike Telegraph Road or Sultans of Swing which are fabulous live, loses a lot in the transition.
