Mark Knopfler has said that drummer Terry Williams was so psyched his Dad was in the audience that he started Sultans of Swing at a faster beat than they'd rehearsed. The band realized it right off and just rolled with it. The result was one of the most dynamic rock performances and concerts of all time. The musicianship on display here is simply astounding. 🤯

    Hi,
Not only did I see Dire Straights live, I was at this gig!
I was just turned 18 and this was my second gig, the first was the Rolling Stones at Wembley, so the bar was very high!
I thought this was normal and you don't appreciate how good it was until later, its still up there!
It took a while to get going and "Sultans" really kicked things off, we were on the balcony just behind the people you could see clapping and the whole place was jumping, I thought the building would fall down!
The tour was called Alchemy, because it was promoting the Love Over Gold album and it was pure gold!
The line up was: Mark Knopfler, vocals and lead Guitar. John Illsley, Bass, Hal Lindes, guitar. Alan Clarke, Keys, Tommy Mandel, second keys (and dancing!) and the Wonderful Terry William on drums.
We knew they were great musicians, but they blew us away with shear talent.
The star for me was Terry Williams, you won't see better drumming live.
Its fantastic that the best technology at the time was used to record it, so we can all enjoy it now.
You have to react to Telegraph Road from this gig, its an epic masterpiece.
    Glad you enjoyed it❤❤

One piece of the puzzle I discovered about Mark is that he was a journalism major and worked as a reporter briefly after college, so he would have a notebook with him wherever he went apparently and used those notes to write lyrics later, as with this song. Talk about good songwriting - he wrote this just about an off-night at a London nightclub watching an unknown band he randomly encountered, and turned some mundane experience into a really compelling song.

Telegraph Road, and Tunnel of Love, off the same Alchemy Live album. Amazing storytelling, guitar solos like you've never heard before, and performances to equal this one. If MK's musical genius and guitar playing appeal, you can begin the wonderful, joyous, mind blowing, multi-genre musical journey that covers better than 45 years of Mark's band, Dire Straits, his solo career, sound tracks to several movies, and collaborative works with other artists and guitar heroes. You won't be disappointed....and probably become a MK aficionado like the rest of us.

Terry Williams was the drummer and was just a beast. He is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and the king of finger pickers since Chet Atkins passed away. This is one of the best live rock performances, ever. I saw an interview with Mark and the interviewer said that he thought Mark was one of the best guitarists in the world and Mark jokingly said, "Hell, I can barely hold the thing." I never saw Dire Straits live, but I did see Paul McCartney and Wings and also Springsteen so that might have made up for it.

One of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler, was untouchable during this time. Terry Williams on drums was on fire 🔥 The thing about Mark is he doesn't like fame and is a private person, so, he could walk down your local high street and be barely recognised, clearly a lot if people would recognise him though, he just likes it that way, for him it's about the music, not his ego.

I really liked your reaction to the preformance. It is one hell of a live performance - classic rock at its best. Sultans of Swing was on Dire Straights debut album. Just think, they never looked back. Mark Knolfer is one of the greatest guitarest ever. By the way, on does not always recognize his songwriting ability. His solo works are just as entertaining, just a little more refined. You are the 5th youtuber in the last 3 days that I have watched that have been blown away by the performance. The live performance was a reinvention of their performance as opposed to the original release track which was dull to say the least, and which did not capture the magical skills of the band, like the drummer and guitar playing and keyboard too. This extended live performance sent the number way up to new heights. Whoever came up with this extended musical performance plan was a genius, and to also highlight the drummers absolute incredible skills too, he was effing amazing, and giving the drummer more attention, that is usually not the norm in music videos, was also a very clever move. The sound was absolutely amazing. How did I not know about this performance years ago. I can't believe I didn't see this before. I'm old enough to remember Dire Straits and I was never really a fan, but this performance was incredible. There is also a sadness attached to this band because of a major falling out between David and Mark.

Great reaction, Lijie! Many will perhaps recommend you listen next to the live version of 'Telegraph Road' from the same concert, which, while excellent, isn't as good as the studio version of the same song. (One of the few occasions a live version isn't as good as the one done in the studio.) I'd post a link but RUclips delete comments with links in them; nevertheless, the track is easy to find if you do a search. The thumbnail picture to look for is of an actual Telegraph Road with a lonely looking guy on a bicycle riding that road in the middle distance, hills in the far distant background.
Then, may I suggest 'Tunnel of Love' live, Wembley Arena 1985, which has Mark playing a truly exquisite guitar solo?

The fairy tale that will not die. Terry's dad bought him his first drum kit when he was 13. Terry played with several popular local bands in his teens. He went on to join Dave Edmunds and Rockpile. While the band was touring the U.S. Terry flew his parents over to see them in concert and do some sightseeing and shopping. By the time Terry joined Dire Straits his dad and mum had seen him play many times.

Anyway, as most people in these comments section acknowledge the genius of the three guitar players Knopfler's Lead, Hal Lindes Rhythm and John Illsey's Bass - And of course Terry Williams phenomenal Drumming - It's worth mentioning that besides their regular Keyword Player Alan Clark on this 1983 Love Over Gold Tour, they added a guest Keyboardist Tommy Mandel for this Alcamy Live recording on July 22nd & July 23rd, which you can plainly see in the upper right hand corner, especially in the long shots, as he lets loose bouncing, dancing & rocking out like nobody's business : Definitely NOT trying to remain incognito ...

As a complete opposite of these "rock songs", if you have the chance, listen to the finger picking, acoustic version of "Wild Theme" off MK's sound track to the movie, "Going Home", "Smoochin", and his stand alone, electric guitar version of "Going Home" with which MK often ended his Dire Strait's gigs. "Brothers in Arms" off the album of the same name is another classic in story telling lyrics, and a wailing, weeping guitar throughout. Ahhhh, so many wonderful aural pleasures still to be savoured!

Correction. I was 20. I'm aging myself. I must have missed them in Knoxville if they made it.

Neither Terry Williams' drum kit or technique are anything to sneeze at. So I'm not trying to take anything away from him when I say that Neil Peart's kit makes almost ANYONE else's look like a My First Drum Kit in comparison. lol! Check out any Rush video - Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight....

Nice reaction until you went incognito on the ending. Deserves an explanation. Was it a bad editing mistake that's hard to fix? I suggest pinning an explanation to the top comment. :) Anyway great otherwise!

Bassgitaristen er der for sin egen del , det er Hannes fest og liker åpenbart musikken hann er med og spiller , jeg har bitt meg mærke til Hannes dans fra første gang , hann liker det hann er med på

Games distract from the reaction process, I suggest you leave the idea. But you did a good job, the end omission was not critical.
Knopfler is such a gift to music! To be riven to your core, listen to his special, Bob-Dylan-approved version of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” called “The Bairns of Dunblane,” link below. Best wishes!

Not a good reaction. Everything is not a question. Loose the interrogative inflection in the end of your statements. I gets annoying!
