Saw Dire Straits Live twice in April and September 1992. I was still a kid and had discovered the band a couple years before with the Money For Nothing greatest hits record. I immediately fell in love with their music and with mark Knopfler’s singing and guitar playing. They had officially broken up since 1988 and there was no chance they would make another album and tour. Against all odds, they announced they were getting back together in 1991. You can’t imagine how exited I was. The shows were amazing. The crowds went completely mad! I’ve been to many a concerts since then, but never have I experience such a thing ever again.
And deservedly so. It's such a powerful and emotional watch every time. Knopfler is a genius songwriter/guitarist/storyteller and this amazing and iconic video perfectly demonstrates that. 🙋♂
Mark turned 75 last week and dropped 9 new tracks, One Deep River (Deluxe), on YT. So he still writes them like that. This song is written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier and his final thoughts. One of the best anti-war songs ever. Also saw him at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville during the Sailing To Philadelphia tour. Between his music and the venue it was idyllic and also the first time he and Emmylou Harris collaborated to my knowledge. Unlike most older bands that rested on their laurels at some point Mark never has and we are blessed by it and I'm not a religious sort. Hope you enjoy his work as much as I have for decades now.
Lijie, loved your reaction to Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms". As a retired veteran myself, this song is very moving and close to my heart. I really liked your critique of the lyrics of the song towards the end of your reaction. keep them coming! 👍❤
a song about a mortally wounded soldier dying on the battlefield and his Brothers not leaving him to die alone... Written about the Falklands war between The UK and argentina in the 80's.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. It's like his guitar is pleading with him not to go, and to come home. In the end,... he doesn't, and the guitar just wails through the end of the song.
I'm Australian, I was gifted a slouch hat that belonged to my grandfather from ww2. I'll never wear it, I've never served. But I'll pass it on to my child
Inspired by the Falklands War of 1982 and still very relevant today, which was when the Argentinians invaded The Falkland Islands in the South Pacific and we (The UK) sent a task force to get them back. The video is still amazing.
Baptism of Fire is a Biblical Reference Meaning 1 of 2 Things. It Can Be Fir Purification If Things to Get Rid of Diseases or burning of Clothes & Bedding to Get Rid of Parasites or Diseases Like Cholera or Leoprosy. Also Can Mean From rbsce Heating of Metal For Tempering to Harden Steel or Iron for Tools so They Won't Break
Baptism of Fire is an expression meaning not really getting a break, being thrown in the fire with no chance to prepare or survive, learn enough to cope. Maybe look at the Album versions of Telegraph Road, Private Investigation ...
I have known this song for years but only found out recently that David Knopfler wrote it as a tribute to his friends who were killed in the Falklands War
@Lijie Mark wrote this song, it is a very well known fact. If you watch this clip at 1:58 you can see Mark himself explain it. ruclips.net/video/qIY0fdL5nDY/видео.htmlsi=g8cnlO6rHJEWFIns
Hi nice channel and reactions. This song Brothers In Arms is so chilling Live from Dire Straits - Live "On The Night" 1993. The instrumental and guitar solo from Mark Knopfler and pedal steel guitar solo from Paul Franklin is jaw dropping.Every reactor I've seen said it had a huge impact. Also from this concert, Private Investigations is so haunting too. And just lastly, the song Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live Dire Straits 1983 is so beautiful. They really are great Live. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Hi Lijie miss seeing you, thanks for reacting to this song, you are so right about being blessed to live in this country, GOD bless the men and woman who serve in our military to protect our freedoms, another song by Dire Straits you should check out is ROMEO AND JULIETT, I think you,ll like it. I,m still waiting for you to disc o ver RAY WILSON, I think you will like him also. As far as baptism by fire i,m not sure, but anyone who is willing to die for what they believe in especially freedom should be baptized, war is HELL. and anyone who has lived through it must have some terrible memories. GOD BLESS THEM.
Nice video, nice reaction. I know this is a video about music. Still you talk about America, patriotism, war, freedom and that you thank the soldiers for serving your country. Nothing wrong with your feelings. I live in a country with almost 80 years of no war. This is because my country wants to live in peace with it´s neighbours. The US _started_(!!) several wars during this time. Can one say these soldiers fought for peace? I´m aware it´s not the soldiers fault that the wars happend. I live in a country where I have the freedom to walk almost anywhere, am free to enter almost any lake, wood, mountain. I don´t fear guns, don´t fear police, don´t fear to get imprisioned, can let my daughter walk alone at night, can cross borders to our neighbor countries while barly noticing the borders. Have visitied more than 15 countries in various continents, learned their good and bad. Our schools are free and don´t need police. Can have a beer while in public, have access to affordable natural healthy food, don´t have the fear to get fired because of nothing, don´t have the fear to go bankrupt because of medical bills or loss of job. have a higher life expectancy, leave my car unlocked and my house is amost never key locked. I even don´t need a fence around my house to my adjacent neigbors. Am not afraid of foreigners. Have the right to demonstrate. This is my freedom. But no, my country is not perfect. But I appreciate these things that make every day life so relaxed and healthy - that is almost impossible for a short term visitor to experience. If you don´t have yet: make your own experience by visiting other countries. Own experience is better than hearsay. You learn for life. And yes - maybe you learn to appreciate your country even more.
A little tip that might help you to not get blocked by RUclips: try breaking up the song in half with some extended commentary (say 2 to 3 min.). For very long pieces, make a comment every 5 minutes or so. People claim that this helps appease the copyright gods.
I hope she didn't mean what she said. She thanked GOD for a land wich "freedom" is based on repression of the rest of the world. "Thank you,god for let me be a free owner of a cotton field!"
Good day my lady *Lijie* can I and my fellow maidiacs get you closer to the road of 10k? Please check out a band from Japan called *BAND-MAID* and the song *alone (Official Music Video)* hope to see you there. 😊
I think you will find he is already dead. "These mist covered mountains are home now to me" is his grave He is from the lowlands which he states in the next line. A later line states they hurt him so bad but his brothers stayed with him until the end.

Baptism of fire where I come from, is the same as being thrown in the deep end with no experience.

Did Mark write this or his brother David??! 🤯
